Amazing stay at Hotel Alaia, Ahangama, Sri Lanka! From the moment we arrived we were greeted with such warm hospitality, including a welcome coconut. We stayed in a Superior King Room with Sea View and the location couldn’t be better — Ahangama town, the main beach and Secret Beach are all just a 5-10 min walk or quick tuk ride away. The food was phenomenal — the breakfast is easily the best I’ve had at any hotel. Huge thanks to Anuradha, Abhishek, Dileep, and Praveen for their incredible service. They also handled my girlfriend’s nut allergy perfectly and made us feel so looked after. Highly recommend. We’ll definitely be back!
There isn’t a pool but the beach is near by and the water is calm even during high tide.
only the view
There were virtually no in-room facilities—not even a kettle to make coffee or tea. Considering the price we paid, this was very disappointing. We’ve stayed at other boutique hotels for the same price, and they offered a much better experience and significantly better value for money. Unfortunately, this hotel did not meet our expectations and wasn’t worth the cost.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel was calm and relaxing. The rooms were clean and comfortable, which made the stay enjoyable. The location is also convenient with easy access to nearby places. Overall, the hospitality and peaceful environment made it a pleasant experience.
Nothing
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Alia, Ahangama ,Pure Hospitality Alia is one of those rare properties where hospitality is genuinely felt, not just performed. Anu takes care of you like family ,you’re in the best hands from the moment you arrive. The rooms are stunning ,we’re talking ocean views while brushing your teeth. Enough said.
Only one thing to flag , being on the main road means some vehicle noise does seep in, so noise insulation could use a little work. Minor, but worth knowing for light sleepers.
Very helpful and friendly staff, clean and modern facilities, beautiful location by the beach, delicious breakfast.
Sound proofing in the rooms could be better, since the property is next to the main beach road.
Didn’t get to stay. Had the stay booked months in advance. Property knew it was for my honeymoon. They text me less then 24hrs before to cancel on me. Left with no where to stay and a very disappointed wife. Put a huge stain on our honeymoon. Hotel didn’t seem to care. Booking.com don’t to care much either. Poor. Avoid.
Everything. Staff was rude and unprofessional.
The location was good and the rooms were spacious, clean, modern and comfortable. The bed and linen was really comfortable and the view from the room was beautiful. Breakfast was delicious and staff was polite and nice
Mooie locatie
Jammer
The hotel was beautiful and our room particularly aesthetic. We were upgraded to a junior suite and the staff were especially warm and accommodating given we were celebrating a birthday. The welcome drink was a very nice touch and the hotel breakfast was beautifully presented. I enjoyed watching the surfers at dawn and dusk.
The hotel was slightly on the edge of town. 20 mins walk to the local bars and restaurants but because the road isn’t pedestrianised, we would always tuk tuk. Unfortunately (presumably because it was end of season) there were a number of items on the menu which were unavailable like chai tea and some rosé.
Amazing location overlooking the sea and only a 3 minute tuk tuk from the main stretch or restaurants and cafes. Staff were very friendly and the room was clean and comfortable.
.The staff here are incredibly friendly and helpful, making for a very welcoming stay. The location is truly breathtaking, complemented by an excellent and diverse food menu. I also thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing spa treatments
None
The hotel appears nice visually.
I really wanted to like this hotel, but it let itself down by trying to be something it isn't. My honest feeling was that the prices are way too high for what you get. The vibe is more like a fancy hostel, than a boutique hotel. The building isn’t very well built, there is no ventilation to the bathroom, there are visible wires not connected to anything, the shower is nice but the temperature would change randomly. The rooms look nice visually, but the noise travels between rooms and the hallway extremely badly. We also had a guest on the balcony next to us playing loud music until 2am the night prior to our check out, it sounded as though they were in our room and we could hear every word of their conversations in between the music. The fridge in the room was rusty, it looked like it had a leak previously. Other than some water there were no other minifridge items. The hotel staff were pleasant, but felt like there was a lack of experience in hospitality, slow service etc there was also some work going on outside our balcony each day we were there, no one mentioned this to us but we would have to listen to banging and sawing of wood work when on the balcony or sun beds. They also did not have anywhere secure for storage of bags upon check out, they are just behind a desk and nobody checks who you are when taking them. The hotel is very rough around the edges and lacks the details or quality to warrant the price. I also would not trust the tuk tuk drivers outside, after taking us to Ahangama one told us he had no change at all and so would come and pick us up and gave us his number - he ignored our call and messages and was stood outside the hotel when we got back. Whilst the tuk tuk drivers are not employed by the hotel, there is a clear relationship as they have someone sitting in the hotel grounds who calls them over from across the street - be aware in Ahangama they deter Uber and Pickme drivers also.
The location, the rooms with view on the sea
AC broke down 2 times but they changed my room
The location is ideal, especially if you’re keen to explore some of the more popular nearby cafés like Cactus Ahangama and Kai Ahangama both are within easy walking distance, which made getting around really convenient. The hotel itself has a beautiful beachfront setting, with a lovely on-site restaurant and bar that creates a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. I had dinner there on my first evening and it was a solid start to my stay, good quality food and a great spot to unwind by the ocean. Breakfast was included, which was a nice bonus. On my first morning, the staff recommended the Alaia breakfast, and it didn’t disappoint, was fresh, well-prepared, and really enjoyable. I ended up ordering the same thing again the next day, which says it all. The staff throughout my stay were warm, friendly, and always willing to help. A special mention to Anu at checkout, who went above and beyond to assist me in arranging a driver, making my departure smooth and stress-free.
A couple of small things that could be improved. There wasn’t a kettle or tea/coffee facilities in the room (I stayed in room 107), which would have been nice especially as breakfast doesn’t start until 8:30am. It’s possible other rooms may have this, but it’s worth noting. I also found it a bit tricky to get an Uber from the location, so transport options can require a bit of extra planning.
Amazing location and amazing staff
Step in the bedroom and no lock in the bathroom.
Perfect Location. Perfect view. Perfect staff. Amazing amenities. We got upgraded !! 🫶🫶
Although the staff made us absolutely comfortable the only thing missing was more options in their vegan/vegetarian menu at the restaurant.
Great location right on the beach and nice modern rooms. Staff were all really friendly and helpful (Anu particularly was super helpful with organising a birthday surprise).
Rooms were lacking a couple of basic amenities like tea / coffee facilities and an iron which we would expect with it being 5 star. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay.
Outstanding Location and best resort. Location was so good & breakfast was so fresh and tasty.
Pretty view. Decent location
Probably the most overrated hotel I’ve ever stayed in. While the rooms may look nice, the experience was awful from the moment we checked in. Our room reeked of chemicals to the point where my friend and I struggled to breathe without getting headaches and watery eyes. On top of that, the toilet flush was broken. I reported this immediately and the staff’s first solution was to move us into a smaller room with no view, essentially a downgrade with no compensation offered. Only after standing my ground were we finally moved into a room larger than our original. We also had ongoing electrical issues in the room. The lights, TV, and WiFi would randomly turn off, which caused the automatic blinds to move up and down on their own throughout the day and night. This was incredibly disruptive and made it impossible to relax or sleep properly. In addition, we had ongoing issues with the TV, where another guest repeatedly connected to it while we were watching. When this was raised with staff, we were told there was nothing they could do and that we would simply have to deal with it. One staff member even dismissed the issue by saying it must be a ghost. The restaurant service is painfully slow. With only two other guests dining, it took over 40 minutes just to receive a piece of toast. Completely unacceptable. To make matters worse, the hotel hosted large parties that went past midnight. There was no warning before or during our booking that this would be the case. The rooms are not soundproof at all, making sleep impossible. You can clearly hear outside noise and non-hotel guests throughout the night, and to top it off, crows repeatedly flew into our window from around 6am after seeing their reflection, making proper rest completely impossible. Outside the hotel, there is a tuk tuk mafia. These men aggressively harass you until you get into their tuk tuk and will not leave you alone unless you do.
amazing location!
reduce the prices of F&B … we would have spent more
First off, the property is gorgeous - so aesthetic and the views are incredible. It was also great to get a free yoga class and 15 min treatment included .
What really let this place down was the service. The lack of communication and the wait times were just not up to par with the cost and look of this hotel which was such a shame. For example, we could only eat in the hotel 1/4 of the nights we stayed (being our first night but we hadn’t realised as so went out instead as had just arrived to Ahangama) this is because the restaurant favoured private events over its own guests. We came down to dinner one night to be told 20 mins before sunset that the restaurant was closed for a private function with 0 prior warning. After sharing my frustration over the lack of communication, they offered to make us a sandwich for dinner an seat us behind the event in the corner… (so no surprise we went out again instead!) on the other two nights they had a sunset rave party which meant normal restaurant service wasn’t running and loud music and outside guests replaced it (again no communication prior to booking or when we arrived of this, we found out via a text on the day). There was also a Jewish celebration another night which again meant no normal dinner service and an event instead. We also had ordered room service on one occasion (two puddings) and waited an hour to receive it. We have stayed in places with far far better service for less of the cost, so we were quite shocked by this. The location of the hotel also wasn’t great, we assumed we could do a breach walk down into the town but it’s not possible to walk down the beach as it’s not connected so it’s a main street with little pavement and it’s just under 30 mins down to the man restaurants so we found overselves getting a tuk tuk a lot due to the walk not being very nice. Nevertheless the hotel was truly gorgeous and we did enjoy ourselves despite!
Amazing views
The presidential suite had a very nice view and a balcony but that was about it. Staff at the gate was also friendly and helpful.
Considering the price there were lot of aspects that were sub-par: 1. toilet in the room had a see through glass door - zero privacy 2. room cleaning was bad 3. On Thursday nights hotel has a party that blasts music and lasts until 11.00 pm. We had to wake up for an early morning trip at 6 am and our sleep was affected. The music was so loud that we felt the bass in our third floor room. Very unpleasant. 4. Breakfast was bad and service very unreliable
Great location and nice rooms.
Food portion have become pretty small. Room next to pools are quite loud. Space at pool/beach is very limited but they allow outside guests and big families for the whole day but this isn't a family hotel at all.
What a beautiful property, excellent staff, food, room - the entire experience at The Hotel was amazing
Nothing
Convenient location, good view from balcony of the ocean. Breakfast food tasted good.
*No basic amenities that are usually present with a 5 star hotel e.g kettle and tea in room, robes or slippers etc * extremely loud inside room as no sound proofing, very noisy and hard to sleep through the noise * electricity’s went out multiple times during the night. AC and fan not working at cooling the room, poor quality electronics * tuk tuk mafia hanging outside the hotel and seem to be in collaboration with the security as we witnessed the same man who chased our driver away having a chat and laugh with the security the next day
It’s a very stylish hotel, nice rooms and a beautiful outdoor setting! The breakfast & lunch/dinner options are very good, too (however, nothing Sri Lankan on the menu). The staff is very nice :) Main restaurants & bars are a short tuk tuk ride away.
The street is very loud, especially in the evening - we were only able to sleep with ear plugs/noice cancelling AirPods
Beautiful beach and view from the terrace. Lovely staff and great breakfast!
Small room and tiny pool
The views of the sea are beautiful. The property has a nice restaurant. The staff are congenial.
The plumbing doesn’t work well in the rooms. There is constant fluctuation between hot and cold water. And inspite of us informing the staff there was nothing they did about it - seemed like they can’t do much. The room has stained upholstery. At this price point one expects more.
We had the most wonderful stay at this beautiful hotel in Ahangama. What made it even more special for us is that we actually saw the hotel being built years ago, and this time we finally had the privilege of staying in it—it truly felt like a full-circle moment. From the very first second, the welcome was exceptional. We were greeted with fresh coconuts as a welcome drink, which instantly set the tone for a relaxed and authentic experience. We were incredibly lucky during our stay, as upon arrival we were offered an upgrade after two nights (completely optional, which was such a nice touch). For the first two nights, we stayed in a standard room on the second floor, which had breathtaking views and was spotlessly clean—everything felt calm, airy, and beautifully designed. After that, we moved to the garden suite on the ground floor, and it was just stunning. The room featured a gorgeous bath and a private terrace that opened directly onto the pool area—such a dreamy setup. Both rooms were equally fantastic in their own way, and it was a real treat to experience both. The staff throughout our stay were incredibly friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming—nothing ever felt like too much trouble. Breakfast each morning was absolutely delicious, with a great variety and fresh flavours. Honestly, I can’t find a single negative thing to say about this place. It’s rare to feel this completely satisfied after a stay, but this hotel truly exceeded all expectations. We would return in a heartbeat 🤍
Nothing!
Gorgeous hotel. Super friendly staff, amazing food!
Quite far away from Ahangama beach, 30 minute walk on the main road!
Great design
Too expensive
It’s a wonderful hotel — everything has been thoughtfully arranged for guests. I really admired the private beach and the restaurant that serves delicious food. I would like to especially thank the reception staff, Anu and Dıium, for their kindness and helpfulness. The hotel owners were very welcoming and sincere. I definitely recommend this place, and I will come back again.
Hotel was absolutely amazing. Food was delicious. Room was beautiful. Staff go above & beyond to ensure your stay is enjoyable
For our first night we did not get any sleep due to the noise from the main road
Hotel was absolutely amazing. Food was delicious. Room was beautiful. Staff go above & beyond to ensure your stay is enjoyable The yoga shala right on the beach was an amazing bonus
Beautiful seaside location with direct beach access, very comfortable and modern rooms, amazing and friendly staff, and a fantastic breakfast. The Thursday night sunset party is a lot of fun and a perfect way to enjoy the stay.
Stars for the comfortable bed, beautiful view, polite staff.
Not worth your money. Rooms are not soundproof at all which should be the bare minimum for a hotel such as this. We were able to hear people in the hallway going into their rooms - it sounded like they were opening our door. Receptions solution to the noise was to move us to a different room, but all the rooms have the same doors so we did not see how this would resolve the noise. No basic amenity kits, no door handle on the bathroom door that doesn’t close. Open wiring in the bathroom. All concrete is in dire need of a repaint, looks very weathered. Aircon drips constantly, so loud it woke me up and left a puddle in our room 2 nights in a row. Restaurant attached is mediocre, strange menu and ingredients don’t seem to be fresh, not worth paying the extra for breakfast as there are much nicer places nearby. They have DJs on a Thursday until 10:30pm, just an FYI you won’t be able to sleep until after 11pm realistically. They ask you to pay a 50% deposit via a 3rd party platform 1 week before you stay and threaten to cancel your booking if you don’t. Felt like a scam! Horrible experience and I’ve never had this happen to me with a booking.com booking. For the high season price we paid, we expected much better hospitality. As mentioned, the staff were nice, but the whole experience feels like it’s run by someone who has zero hospitality experience. It looks good in photos and a good location but the attention to detail is missing and the place is devoid of hospitality. It feels like a spot for the owners and their friends to hang out, rather than a hotel. Pretty disappointing experience all round. Vibes are off, don’t come here if you want to relax, there are PLENTY of places in Ahangama that will give you the bare minimum of amenity kits , sound proof doors and a bathroom door that actually closes 😂
Excellent
The air freshener in the room made me cough. Everything else was excellent
Beachfront views, friendly staff, huge clean rooms, great service at the restaurant, not super busy and loud, comfy bed and couch. Stunning location!
Shower - the shower itself was beautiful but the temperature was one of the worst I’ve been in. You’d set it on a temp and it would take 2 mins to change and would go from cold to burning hot. Live music was quite loud so something to be mindful of on Friday and Sunday nights if you have kids they play until 9:30-10pm.
+ Really nice own beach and restaurant area + Staff was really friendly + Great views from the rooms + Good food and breakfast in the restaurant
- Nearby road noises you can hear all the time in the room - Road nearby is quite busy with trafic so walking from the hotel anywhere does not feel really safe
That was probably my favorite hotel in Sri Lanka. The rooms were stunning, and the facilities and restaurant were excellent. Special thanks to Abhisheek and Dileep for taking such great care of me ☺️
Not really a downside, but I do wish they had informed me it was off-season and that there wouldn’t be any yoga classes or sound healing sessions when I messaged to pre-book it ahead of my visit.
The Hotel in Ahangama is truly a special place – the kind that stays with you long after you leave. From the very first day, it felt less like a hotel and more like a welcoming home by the ocean. The owner, Elon, is an incredible host with a rare ability to make every guest feel genuinely cared for. Over the stay, Elon became not just a host but a dear friend, always present, warm, and attentive without ever being intrusive. The restaurant, Alaia, is an absolute highlight. Shirani, the restaurant manager, runs it with so much heart and professionalism that every meal feels personal. The food is simply brilliant – fresh, vibrant, and beautifully prepared, with ingredients that truly shine. Breakfasts are best I had and the sunset cocktails are on another level: creative, perfectly balanced, and best enjoyed while watching the sky change colors. Shirani, like Elon, became a dear friend, and her warmth adds something truly special to the experience. The rooms are very nicely designed – stylish, calm, and thoughtful – but also extremely practical. Everything makes sense, from the layout to the small details, making it easy to relax and feel comfortable right away. Every few days, a DJ plays great house tunes, creating an effortless, relaxed atmosphere that fits perfectly with the rhythm of Ahangama. Add to that the excellent massages, which are deeply relaxing and professionally done, and you have a place that truly understands how to slow you down in the best possible way. This is not just a hotel; it’s a place built on people, taste, and soul. Thank you, Elon and Shirani, for the friendship, the warmth and unforgettable stay. I will be back.

A perfect boutique hotel find in Ahangama – beautiful design, peaceful atmosphere, exceptional service, and an unforgettable stay by the ocean.
Localización, vistas, instalaciones modernas y limpias. Personal atento y amable.
Aire acondicionado estropeado, personal pone remedio inmediatamente.
Friendly, welcoming reception staff. Bright, clean, well-designed rooms. The evening meal was excellent with a great atmosphere and tasty food. Beachfront location makes it very easy to swim in the sea.
Basic check-in information (breakfast details, WiFi, laundry, yoga, etc.) was not proactively provided and had to be requested multiple times, with an over-reliance on WhatsApp instead of clear in-room information. Significant noise from the busy road made it hard to sleep due to some front windows lacking glass on the top floor, and sound travelled easily through the corridors. We were not informed about public beach parties hosted by the hotel, which affected our stay. Food and drinks felt slightly overpriced, with menus in USD but payment taken in rupees. Daytime music was too loud and not very relaxing. Some small but frustrating details were overlooked (e.g. water provided in rooms without glasses). Beachfront bean bags look nice but are uncomfortable.
The design and ease - loved the no key card for each room. The codes to enter your room as so easy! The view from the ground floor room is stunning as it opens up to the pool and beach in the background.
One room we stayed at upstairs had a bad sewage smell from the bathroom but changed to the ground floor and that was amazing! We loved it so much, we extended our stay. The menu could have a few more options. Try incorporating few Sri Lankan flavours - tourists would love it!
Zdecydowanie wrócimy do The Hotel!
Everything is to a high finish and has an extremely relaxed vibe. The staff were lovely and super smiley and helpful.
Brilliant experience at The Hotel. The rooms and view are unbeatable. I was extremely comfortable, the team were incredibly helpful and food was fantastic. Make sure you try a dinner or lunch also - the chef is really talented and you're sure to have a delicious meal. Couldn't have been happier with my experience at The Hotel, I can't wait to return.
Great facilities gorgeous rooms and lovely vibe!
Very much on the luxury side price wise but gorgeous!
The location, architecture and styling of the property ticked all the boxes for us. We loved the relaxed bohemian vibe. The staff were lovely and friendly. STUNNING outlook.
Facilities in the room were lacking basic amenities like glassware and a kettle. The floor in our room was extremely slippery and my husband fell twice. The food in the restaurant was hit and miss and the service was extremely slow sometimes taking half an hour for a drink and meals never arrived together.
The Hotel is a decent beachfront place with very kind and attentive staff. The restaurant offers good quality food, though prices are a little high. Good spot for surfers. Overall, a good stay with realistic expectations.
The rooms are comfortable but not luxurious. Be aware that there can be noise from the street, nearby rooms, and the bar next door , it’s part of the environment.
The hotel was absolutely stunning! Our room was very spacious, also balcony and lounge with a gorgeous view, and the bed was super comfortable. The bathroom was generously sized and everything was impeccably clean. The hotel restaurant was excellent, and the breakfast was absolutely delicious! Also what an amazing place for sunsets :)
Some attention to detail was lacking considering the price of this hotel. For example, there was a glass bottle of water in the fridge but no glasses to drink from, and there was no tea or coffee in the room unless you text reception — there are no room service phones in the room, and messages aren’t always seen. The hotel was also very noisy due to heavy road traffic on the main street. Additionally, we assumed the pools were for swimming, but two are decorative and the other is small, more like a dipping pool for kids. Finally, the hotel hosts parties on Thursdays, and our last night coincided with one. We had planned to have dinner at the hotel restaurant, but due to the party, it was impossible. Had we known about the party in advance, we would have arranged alternative dining plans.
Incredible hotel! The view from the room is spectacular, the service is a very high standard and the food was also very good! Highly recommend staying here, unforgettable experience, will definitely be returning.
The rooms were very spacious and had beautiful views out to the ocean. The outside area was lovely where you could relax on beanbags right beside the ocean with access to swimming down some steps. The vibe and aesthetics were very cool and great food offerings in the restaurant, including an amazing breakfast.
Located on a busy noisy road.
Very modern and very relaxing. Rooms were beautiful, view was amazing and the breakfast area was lovely!
The WiFi didn’t work…
The staff and management were friendly and welcoming throughout our stay. The in-house restaurant team were very polite, attentive, and quick to assist without being intrusive. Always present when needed and clearly hardworking. They definitely deserve recognition. The food served at the restaurant had a unique touch and tasted great. The rooms were clean, well maintained, and equipped with good amenities, with an exceptional view from the balcony that really stood out.
The food was slightly more expensive compared to other restaurants in the area, and the menu could benefit from a bit more variety. Parking was limited when we arrived due to the small car park and the busy Friday night. However, the staff and security managed to free up space very quickly, which was appreciated. The room itself was excellent overall, though adding a larger TV would enhance the experience, as the current one feels small in an otherwise well designed room.
Great view, good location, nice food.
Hooks to hang wet towels in the room. Portion sizes for the meals at the restaurant.
