The aesthetics are amazing, just like stepping back in time. The bed was really comfortable and the breakfast was really substantial. The location is perfect but somehow, even though it's on the main thoroughfare its wasn't to noisy. To top it all off, when we checked out the owners let us park in the hotel parking for the rest of the day. We were really appreciative of this.
Nothing
As a grade 2 listed building, inside it has his charme. Unfortunately Matlock Bath have little to offer. Not so far by car from interesting place to go ,but in itself a " bath town without sea " and services ( stores ,etc)
The location of the hotel was good . This was the only good thing.
The description on Booking.com looked really good so decided to book this as a last night stay on our road trip. The day before we arrive received an email saying that the hotel was now self check in and gave a code. When we arrived we found the door was unlocked (initially wasn't worried by this but then another guest mentioned it and had I been travelling on my own could have been a concern) and no staff around. We used the key safe to get the key and went to the room. Bed was extremely uncomfortable (needs a new mattress) , no toiletries provided (there was a tray on second floor with one toilet roll and two small bottles of conditioner) very dusty (shelves, light shades etc no sign of cleaning for a long time). Breakfast was very disappointing. We had received a text which said: Please note we are still providing guests with a menu and we kindly request if you could please pre-order your breakfast . No menu in room so I phoned the mobile number given and was told , "no there isn't a menu, just come down between 8:30 and 9:30 (on email time given as 8:30 to 10:30) and we'll take your order" I had a look at the breakfast menu on the hotel website which shows for instance : freshly made fruit salad ( a standard plastic individual pot from a supermarket ) Fresh fruit smoothie ( a pot of cheap strawberry yoghurt ) A selection of cereals ( some very old looking coco pops and cornflakes in glass dispensers ) The Full English ( really badly cooked by someone who I suspect is not a chef). I could go on...... I gathered from overheard conversations that the owner is cutting costs. However prices for a stay remain the same . Very expensive for a extremely poor experience .
Breakfast was very nice and the room was lovely. We didn't realise until the day before that it was self check in and strange way to run a hotel. Understand that it is to be turned into a Airbnb which will be a real shame.
Have a proper reception and check in.
Great location Comfortable bed When I sent a message to whoever was managing the place , I had a quick reply
I wasn’t expecting self check in, so I didn’t see or hear a soul the whole first day there, it made it feel deserted, uninviting, and unfriendly, and more like an Airbnb than a hotel. The lighting didn’t help as it was very dim through out and made it feel very gloomy and dark. I was in the single room and the shower was not easy to use as very small and effectively in a cupboard. There was nowhere to put the towel so it had to go on the floor of the room on the carpet outside the cubicle. The shower was only warm and not hot and there was no shower gel yet hand lotion and conditioner!! I was offered a hot breakfast the only morning I was there and that was the first time I saw anyone since I’d arrived the day before, but I didn’t want one preferring cereal and toast, just as well as it was a very minimal cold buffet offering with no fresh fruit and soggy pastries just defrosted.
Very nice comfy room. K
Très belle chambre, dans une très belle maison. Tout était parfait. Bon petit déjeuner.
Rien, tout était parfait et conforme à la description.
Brilliant location, lovely staff
Old fashioned hotel
Wonderful old building full of period charm. Our room was very comfortable.
The ownership of the hotel is about to change and it was clear that stocks were being run down.
Decor old and very tasteful. too big a stair climb and no lift. great value. Breakfast good. Friendly staff.
Stair climb to the room.
Very friendly staff and super location. If you are around on a Sunday, dine at the Fish Pond and enjoy their open mike usic experience.
The location and parking
Needs some money spent on it and staff training
Location
Room , shower were tiny
My room was very nice and interesting. Furniture I style with the age of the hotel. Comfortable and clean. Although bedside lights do not work.
If you look for better food than fish&chips Matlock Bath is best avoided.
Quirky Old World charm with forests of out-of-square woodwork! Excellent breakfasts with quality ingredients.
Cramped single room and, facing the rock face, was a bit dark even with the lights on
Location. Friendly staff. Room size was good. Lovely to have 2 arm chairs to sit on and look out the window.
No daily house keeping. We were there for 3 days, beds not remade, bins over flowing. No clean towels . Had to wash cups up in hand wash sink. We were not made aware of any available bar facilities for residents. No cosy lounge. Breakfast not freshly cooked to order and tables were not set definitely with crisp table linen. Details on Booking.com appear very outdated compared to reality eg. No lounge, no evening meal service, no daily housekeeping service. The £130 per night (£390 in total paid) is definitely not good value for money. Had made the hotel aware on booking that the reason we were coming was special for my wife who had just retired from work. Very disappointed. Would value this stay at £90 per night. I only booked this hotel from the details provided by Booking.com l would expect some form of reimbursement please.
Position in town and parking are excellent. Great breakfast and lively tray in rooms
The shower is a little small but appreciate it is the space available. Would really like better coffee a breakfast.
A hotel with real character, it even has it's own cave! A real 'Sherlock Holmes' feel to the rooms which are full of period furniture. The bed was so comfortable! Donna and Chris, our hosts, were friendly and really knew the building and surrounding area. Matlock Bath is lovely and you have to do the Heights of Abraham, it's fab. Good food in the area and live bands in the pubs. The entire town, with it's ice cream and fish and chip shops makes it feel like a seaside town! Lots of motorbikes visiting the town...and I'm an enthusiast. Would highly recommend a stay at Hodgkinsons.
There was nothing I didn't like!
Location, staff welcoming, breakfast
All good
A beautiful hotel, with a lovely hotel room, we had the deluxe which was fabulous. Breakfasts were fabulous! And such lovely staff.
Nothing, all wonderful.
Great old world feel to the property excellent staff very welcoming beautiful breakfast and ideal location for exploring the local sights
Nothing perfect
Convenient, original, hospitable
Nil specific
Great location, parking onsite, good breakfast Lovely hosts. The hotel is like stepping back in time, very historic. The hotel even has it’s own cave, it’s amazing. Chris the host took us into the cave and gave us lots of history. Don’t ever change a thing, it’s fantastic. Would definitely recommend a stay here.
Nothing
Felt very welcone as soon as we walked through the door, lpvely room with comfi bed, great breskfast next morning,,i
Nothing
The history of the building was brilliant Great base for exploring the area very central Very friendly people who run the place And lovely breakfast Clean bed clean towels clean bathroom
They have a bar with a great choice of spirts etc But of a evening never anyone about to serve you if you fancy a drink there before bed And the cleaning needs to be deeper cleans As you open the cupboard to put items in absolutely thick with dust and the sash windows are dusty dirty all in between the on the window sills, cobwebs etc The important parts are clean Just a shame these area do let it down As its a beautiful old place
Patrons engaging and polite , eager to make costumers happy. Breakfast fabulous .Location is perfect with lots of amenities near by and good access to transport.
room was fantastic with spectacular views, staff were very helpful and the breakfast was lovely
nothing
Location very good. Great quirky building and furnishings. Really good breakfast and friendly family hosts.
Had a bedroom with a really high bed which was very comfortable but really needs a step stool to safely get onto. Also could do with a little more attention to dusting.
Location
No restaurant, no bar ,breakfast was cold glad I only had to stay 2night ,no atmosphere we came back early on our first night to watch the England game hoping to have a few drinks and watch the game in our room with a few drinks, bar was closed so went to room watched it with a coffee .We were never asked if we wanted a drink but having said that the bar was never opened.
Great location. Comfortable bed . Clean bedrooms. Great value. Welcoming and friendly to the hotel guests. Will be back and staying here again for our next trip.
The staff lovely and friendly and helpful and they moved our room to the first floor when they realised my husband used a walking stick. Room well furnished with plenty of sockets.
The breakfast was overcooked and the room was not serviced during our two night stay.
Lovely hotel with plenty of history, kept the charm just right. Very helpful staff & Manager Gorgeous room ,comfy bed with great pillows. Great breakfast with wonderful selection of hot & cold choices.
Parking at the top of a steep side road.
Lovely room. Fantastic stay. Can't wait for full cave experience! Brilliant staff - nothing too much trouble. Excellent breakfast. Will definitely visit again. 😀
Nothing.
breakfast was superb - and all locally sourced Lunch and dinner will be available shortly once the kitchen has been upgraded My single room was typical Victorian. as in the entire hotel, being listed .... everything provided and very comfortable Chris the owner and family have exciting plans for the hotel to develop it further, including a genuine authentic Cave Bar I much look forward to returning soon I hope!! Thank you so for making my stay so enjoyable and welcoming Stuart
nothing at all
Good breakfast plenty of choice. The building is Georgian, with original Georgian and Victorian fittings, real character.A good head of pressure on the shower. The manager gave me a interesting tour of some old mine workings that are accessed directly from the building.Originally a coaching inn it was bought by a wine merchant to keep the wine at a constant 9°C,of course the workings are not accessible by guests.Although overlooking the main street secondary double glazing kept the room quiet,it was good to look out at all The coming and going, getting the holiday vibe
We loved the Victorian style decor and all the authentic details
Lovely hotel ,very welcoming hosts couldn't do enough for you ,perfect breakfast, the whole experience was fantastic
Great location and staff who really cared especially Donna. Great breakfast.
A well located hotel, like stepping back in time. Furnishings and panelling go back to the 19th century, making this hotel different from the norm. That said it is run by very friendly and helpful people and the breakfasts are quite simply excellent.
Nothing.
It’s a really quirky place- but with lots of atmosphere. What made it (other than some fine cooked breakfasts and a great range of options) was the cave at the back of the hotel which was fascinating. Thought it would be super noisy- especially as it’s right outside the main road through Matlock Bath- which is heaving in the daytime. However, the double glazed windows reduced much of it and the place is pretty quiet after 9pm.
Room was a bit too warm when we arrived. If you don’t like Victorian quirky hotels, this may not suit, but we really enjoyed it.
No water in room no restaurant in evening no biscuits in room no robes
Friendly staff, great location and lovely Victorian building
Location and friendly hosts
Stairs but they did move me down
Received up grade to larger room as one available. This greatly improved stay. Breakfast was excellent.
The breakfast [one] staff did very well , but with at least 11 guests there was a delay in getting served.
Staff very welcoming and attentive, great location, large breakfast
Beds very small and uncomfortable, although breakfast copious, it wasn't very good
Room was comfortable
Staff unavailable Ran out of milk in the room and unable to get more. Breakfast was a bit cold
The helpful staff.
Everywhere needed some fresh air. I didnt like the musty smell.
Location
No staff on site apart from 1 person at breakfast doing everything - breakfast poor, not enough milk in room & nowhere to get any, didn't feel secure going back at night with no staff in property
Central location
Stairs and doors!
Friendly helpful staff, excellent location, clean room.
The hotel offered all mod cons but with the decor and charm of bygone days with an excellent breakfast.
The toilet flush was very noisy and the bathroom radiator too hot and not adjustable
Very helpful staff.very good food. Excellent location with quite a few things to do nearby.
Steep hill to and from nearby car park. Only fish and chip restaurants near by but some very good ones 10 minutes in car. Noisy motor bike riders during day.
Nice full English breakfast.
I would've liked a cereal before the full English breakfast and a glass of fresh orange juice. The shower cubicle was a little small.
This is a quaint Victorian themed Hotel. Like stepping back in time. Comfortable very clean room. We enjoyed our stay - very central in Matlock Bath.
I can see why the Hotel does not want to change much - but a few things could do with a gentle upgrade. Breakfast was chaotic - food ok, but no milk out for cereal and it was all hopelessly disorganised.
Poor breakfast, no staff after book in. Bar shut restaurant shut. Stairs unsafe. Room cramped and dusty. Kettle not working, reported but bo action. No cleaning or fresh towels. Left a day . early.
Being made to feel welcome and part of the family
Shower cubicle was very tiny so i struggled to have a shower as there was no room to bend down and move to wash my body
The quirky interior, excellent friendly staff, location. Would highly recommend

Fab stay. Rob was a great host
Nothing
The breakfast was brilliant and so accommodating to gluten free needs
This hotel was quirky with historical artefacts and pictures of the past. There are caves within the hotel that the friendly proprietor showed to us-fantastic! There are arm chairs in the large bedroom, the bed is extra comfy. Location in the centre of Matlock Bath is spot on. Excellent value for money. Breakfast was wonderful with quality items served.
Nothing. We loved staying here.
Quirky, fantastic hotel!! So friendly and we even had a cheeky trip to the cave! Breakfast was superb, room was so comfy & the bath was amazing!
Great location for hiking, parking available, breakfast included, 24 hour access, warm room.
I could hear noisy guests in the room next door. The shower cubicle was tiny (like you might find in a caravan) and could feel claustrophobic for some people. There were a few cobwebs in the room, higher up but reachable.
Very tasty breakfast and amazing decor through the house. Owner was friendly and very helpful.
Being very very picky but if I had to say anything it would just be the room is quite dimly lit. But I loved the room and it's quirks overall and the lighting was very minor.
We enjoyed our stay .The hotel is nicely situated in the town centre and near to Abraham Heights. It is a good base for some lovely walks.
There wasn't really anything to totally dislike but the hotel is perhaps in need of some tlc. The room was comfy but needed a good dust.. The furnishings are a little dated and some could do with replacing. ( Bathroom, and light fittings. ) Soap/ hand wash should be in the bathroom. I had to ask and I was given some. Rob was very obliging and the breakfast and steak meal was lovely. Limited menu though.. no deserts or starters ,although these were on the menu. We did enjoy looking at the caves that run alongside the hotel.
Very relaxing, super comfortable bed, excellent breakfast, very friendly host
La amabilidad de Rob es una super excelente persona
En realidad todo nos gustó a mí marido y a mi
Great spot to explore the Peak District. Great value. Great sausages.
It snowed! 🤣
Chap running it now v friendly n helpful n doing everything himself.
Been coming years. Price has increased but standards since Chris n Zoe sold it have dropped. Very Dusty, even in rooms. No flannels. Breakfast used to be 2 courses, with cafetiere n juice, a tablecloths, all v pretty. Now a fry up. Not real butter. Reception area cluttered. It's lost its magic. Very sorry about that, it was a special place. Not fault of chap looking after it solo. Cost cutting n practicalities have bitten into it I think.
Staff friendly and helpful, Hotel was fine for our needs.
Some of the breakfast food was cold on my cooked breakfast.
All of it.

Location was great but it would have been nice to know more about the history of the building when booking. Bed and pillows really comfortable.
Decor a bit dated. We had breakfast, food lovely, but no side plates for the toast or napkins, so needed more attention to detail
Convenient and central with great parking
Can't say I didn't like anything
The hotel inside and out is stunning and the room exceeded our expectations, it was absolutely beautiful. The included breakfast was absolutely amazing as well very tasty and very high quality. The owners are very lovely people very inviting and approachable.
Absolutely nothing everything was perfect.
