Kanuka Hill

This quiet location was great to catch up with friends but still close enough to Kaikoura to have access to shops. We had a perfect weekend weather wise so we're able to sit and relax outside on the outdoor furniture. My husband loved the outdoor bath and the fire kept us cozy warm in the evening.

Amazing views and such a quiet location! It is remote, but still relatively close to Kaikoura. Good bed & the house has everything you need. Check-in went smoothly, contact with owner was digital but very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended!

The star gazing was phenomenal. Just the location in general was amazing, the view was magical and the birds were fantastic.

The location was great privacy

Het was een hele mooi omgeving, fijne kamers en een prachtig uitzicht. Ik zou hier voor altijd willen blijven.

Super gezellig groot huis met een waanzinnig uitzicht. Van alle gemakken voorzien. Rustig, landelijk, totale privacy en toch vlak bij Kaikoura (met de auto). Leuk bad buiten.

The mountain views with piece and quiet were really amazing.

Mosquitoes were the most annoying thing I could think of.

amazing location

We loved it. Perfect place to stay for our family. We appreciated the 2 bathrooms and outside loo with a teenager as part of the crew. The location was wonderful, waking up to cows and freshly spread sileage on Saturday. Not too far from Kaikoura. Lovely and peaceful. The bbq is fantastic. We would definitely stay here again

In the dark, the little bridge is hard to see. A wee sign there would be great

Wow! This property is quite unique for its rural location and cleverPerfect design! It offers everything you need for a family stay, a well-presented and decorated house, a full kitchen, comfortable beds, the quietness and beauty of the surroundings. We loved the outdoor bathtub too! What a beautiful experience for our overseas grandkids :) Thank you Mike and family for sharing your amazing place!

We enjoyed staying there a lot ! The views are fantastic and it is so peaceful, while being close from kaikoura :)

The location is exceptional.

A downstairs bedroom would have been excellent. And a microwave oven a useful addition. Apart from those, nothing is needed.

Oh The BATH! This is the nicest place that we stayed in during our trip to New Zealand. Absolutely beautiful home.

What stunning place!! In the hills above Kaikoura wth the most amazing views. The off-the-grid house had everything we needed. Communication with the host was great. We'd love to come stay again!

This is a very unique house, which offered a special experience. The views were exceptional and it was lovely to enjoy a little quiet respite atop a hill and away from the throng.

For our group of 7 it was a bit of a squeeze - especially at mealtimes it was a little too cosy trying to eat all together.

Very comfortable and clean accommodation. Loved the location especially great for Astrophotography as it is further away from Kaikoura. The view of the mountains was spectacular. All this, only 10 mins out of Kaikoura.

The secluded location was great and the view to the mountains was breathtaking. We loved our time at the property and the outdoor bath was an added bonus.

Rural idyll. Not a house to be seen, which makes the outside (extra) bath and loo with a view a reasonable proposition. Convenient to Kaikōura. Just fabulous.

The location, peace, countryside, views of the inland Kaikoura mountains. The house, the comfort, the kitchen, woodfire that the boys loved, and the outdoor bath I enjoyed one evening at sunset. The facilities and instructions were perfect. Loved that the house has been built by the owner and furnished with upcycled furniture. Loved the maps on the walls, the interesting old family (?) photos, the collection of CDs and books.

The red house on the hill is in a stunning setting in the hills behind Kaikoura. Mike sent comprehensive instructions on how to get there, together with the key box code. Close enough to the town but far enough away to enjoy dark skies, peace and quiet. The house is beautifully designed. The log fire was particularly welcome as the autumn night temperatures started to drop. The washing machine was a helpful addition. We prepared evening meals with ease in the kitchen. The bed was extremely comfortable and the shower excellent. We enjoyed star gazing outside listening to the ruru (morepork owl) after sunset.

Everything was clean and Mike and Jaye helped us with all our needs.

It was the perfect place for our family to come together. The house comfortably fitted 4 adults and a child, it was clean and well presented, and the surroundings are stunning. A 10 minute drive from town saw us looking out at the mountain vista's in the evening with a glass of wine/cup of tea, and just enjoying the peace, quiet and beauty. When it got dark we could enjoy the selection of boardgames available.

Gorgeous location away from it all; friendly host, fun property for kids & family, homely. Interesting to see solar power in action. Must see starry nights!

We stayed on some of the hottest days & nights of the year. The property does not have air conditioning, so we did suffer a bit in the warm bedrooms upstairs. Different weather - would have been no problem.

Awesome views, comfortable stay, great way to experience off-grid house that’s setup as somebody’s summer house. Most importantly, Mike cares which is rare nowadays in tourism industry.

We loved that kanuka hill is off grid, no microwave, oven, toaster also that you had to think about how we used the electricity, all while having all the creature comforts, comfy beds, stunning views and all the kitchen equipment we needed. For our family of five this place was great. Thank you

Unfortunately Because of a glitch in our travel plans we were unable to stay at Kanuka Hill. However, the owner was so helpful and understanding, so top marks to him for that. He was an excellent communicator and very understanding and reasonable.
