Northern Holiday Cottage

Warning – for your own safety do not stay at this property. We had booked for 2 nights for 8 adults (1 who is elderly), travelled 5.5 hours to get there. Arrived at 7.30pm in winter to find bed sheets hanging on the carport washing line, clothes horses left out and open, dishes drip drying on the sink bench, old food in the fridge and not enough seating in the lounge for us all. We found 3 oil heaters to try and warm up the bedrooms only for the power to trip out at the main circuit boards. Having all 3 going at once overloaded the dodgy electrical wiring. Tried the wifi but would not work either or the tv as it kept overloading and tripping out. Called the property contact, William, who was pleasant and explained how to fix it and not to have too many appliances on at one time. So through trial and error we turned off the heaters, tv and wifi, only to find we could only have one oil heater going at a time, and still no wifi or tv. House is pretty cold by this point so we decided to try the heat pump in the lounge. Myself, my daughter and her partner all witnessed a bright white/green electrical flash from behind the heat pump. Again we called William who explained the power issue with circuit board and overloading. He was out of town for the evening and wouldn’t be back to help until around 10pm – we said that wasn’t good enough and did not feel safe and we were leaving. So my wife and sister, at 8.30pm at night, in winter had to drive around Whangārei looking for alternative accommodation for 8 adults. They found a nice motel that cost us another $1400 to stay there on top of what we had already paid booking.com. We only left the original booked property because of the faulty power issues – the sheets, the dishes, food etc we can overlook, the power issues and a cold house we could not.

Location is good, convenient to go to supermarket and takeaways.

I was only one guest there and feel scared the noise from outside chair due to windy night.

Property had everything we needed for our short stay, plenty of beds for a large group. Communication was excellent from booking to checking in.

Everything was as expected for a homestay no complaints.

The location was good.

The bed was damp as were the pillows. No heaters were in the rooms and it was cold - no extra blankets supplied. The towels were very old ( what I would call floor cleaning towels) and no face cloth was given. There was no information provided apart from how to get into the property and my room. We expected the usual tea/coffee sachets with milk to be supplied - there was nothing and since our plane was delayed the supermarkets were closed so we could not have a hot drink.

Excellent value, cosy and comfortable. Felt like a home with a good array of kitchen equipment and a nice lounge room to relax in with games/books available. Lots of cosy little extra touches that were nice. There were multiple areas to sit in the lounge , so even if other people were using the room there were always chairs available.

Its actually a lovely comfy very roomy house with three large bedrooms with their own key access. I chose the room with its own full size private bathroom which was only slightly more expensive than the other two rooms that shared one. House has huge well equiped kitchen , lounge, dining, areas. Super convenient location. Could happily have stayed much longer. Exceptional value. Highly recommended.

The house has a single driveway useful for unloading but cars must then be moved to roadside parking. I found several free spaces avail just at the gate.

This place was spotlessly clean. Hosts were very helpful. i even managed to ret a washing done and dried whilst there, which kept me going for the rest of my trip.

I like the location with shops all walking distance and fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. Lovely spacious property and garden, very relaxing.

Shared facilities is largely dependant on those you share it with. We had one other guest that was a bit annoying.

Hot water wasn't cold in shared bathroom, not sure why because kitchen tap hot water was very hot. That would be the only thing I didnt like. Otherwise shared bathroom nice modern and had laundry facility.

I booked this place because it looked very nice and *quiet* and *private* but apparently they allow guests to check in at all hours of the night!! even due they specify quiet hours 9pm!! and because of some crazy dysfunction with whatever horrible Chinese software they're using to communicate with emails and texts, I got no specific details, went into the only room that was open and actually had a key on the door.. Then they woke me up at 1:00 a.m. because the other guests got the same room as me!! And for some other crazy reason the room key was in a random drawer! while the visible key was in the lock and I had no info accept common sense! And they don't answer any means of communication!..until 1am! and then those guests made noise until 2:00 a.m. and then woke up at 7:00 a.m. and I didn't have any sleep!! If you book room 1 understand the wall is VERY THIN!!

Das Konzept ist super – man hat ein eigenes, abschließbares Zimmer, teilt sich aber die Gemeinschaftsräume mit anderen Gästen. Alles war gut organisiert, der Check-in sehr einfach. Das Haus ist schön, mit einer tollen Terrasse, großer Küche, gutem Badezimmer, Waschmaschine und hervorragender Lage. Supermarkt und Parkplatz direkt am Haus! Die Gemeinschaftsräume wurden täglich vom Besitzer gereinigt, was ich klasse fand. Ich habe auch einige nette Menschen kennengelernt.

Die Sauberkeit war leider nicht überall top. In der Küche war vieles (Geschirr, Tassen, etc) nicht richtig sauber (bisschen schmierig), sodass ich Geschirr und Besteck vor der Benutzung abgespült habe. Hinter den Gardinen und auch im Schlafraum gab es einige Spinnweben. Nachts wurde es recht kalt, aber mit Heizung und Wärmflasche ging es. Manche Gäste verhalten sich so, als wären sie allein im Haus – da es keine Aufsicht gibt, kann das als Alleinreisende etwas unangenehm sein.

I love that this is a cottage that retains much of its original character features. The fact that it is so central and yet peaceful is a feature that will bring me back if I need town accommodation again. I appreciated that there was a room available at a very fair value when I needed a place to stay in an emergency.

There was nobody else on the property on the night I stayed there, so I had the whole house and bathroom to myself. The supermarket is just a 10-minute walk away so it’s very convenient. Place is quiet and peaceful at night. Room and house are clean. Kitchen is fully equipped.

The town center is a 20-30 minute walk away, which isn’t super near.

Shared kitchen- this wasn’t made very clear in the description and essentially you have a room and private bathroom but shared living space and kitchen with 3 other rooms, so may be waiting for other people to finish to be able to cook.

On arrival we were not sure we were at the right address. The text from the owner had not arrived explaining lock system. There was no signage saying this was the cottage. It was a house. Shared accommodation with open plan living. Separate bedrooms but communal bathroom, kitchen and lounge. Bedrooms all off living space so watching TV would have meant disturbing others. No one used the lounge area. An older house so doors to bathroom and toilet not secure. More like a boarding house situation. There was no staff so not sure about servicing ...cleaning toilets.

We loved the clean and homely cottage, we were in Whangarei for a wedding with two of our children and their partners so six adults in total. Great to stay together in the one place, their was milk in the fridge and tea on the shelf so we could make a cup of tea after our long drive before we went to get supplies so my wife was very grateful for that simple but essential luxury. They knew we were coming earlier than their usual checkup time as the ladies needed to dress and prepare for the wedding, our hosts were very obliging and had the place ready on time, and it all went without a hitch. No complaints from anyone, and we left them some chocolate biscuits in the fridge to say thanks. Would happily stay there again.

A couple of floorboards in the lounge and on the landing creaked and bowed a bit when you stepped on them, but it’s lovely old timber so that is to be expected. It smelt a little of cats to me, but once we opened some windows it was all good.

Easy to get to. We didn't actually stay at the property because i didnt realise it was a shared house situation BUT was a nice surprise to be contacted by the host who called to check everything was alright when we never checked in

To many extra houseguests in the way of spiders/cobwebs - would be helpful to have a rubbish bin outside so you can clear out inside rubbish bins - we were a large party 8
