Amazing room and facilities, staff were very friendly and helpful with describing meals or using a translation app if issues arose. Food was amazing even if some of it was not to my usual pallet.

The staff were so friendly and spoke at length with us. They seemed genuinely happy to have us as guests and were very personable. Most staff spoke good English.

The breakfast and dinner was extremely exotic and different (for us as Americans). If you have a sensitive stomach, beware! However, it was a very cool experience to try such unique foods!!

One of my best experiences in Japan. Great traditional Japanese style rooms with some Western amenities. Breakfast and dinner provided by the hotel were both incredible.

The property felt tucked away, but in reality, it was right in the mix of things. The road was slightly busy, but there are not many roads around that area. There was also a sidewalk that you could walk two things if you did not mind walking in the hilly area.

The property had views that were great and a little lobby that you could have a drink.

Nice decor, helped us get into the vibe after a busy holiday.

Our stay was absolutely wonderful! The facilities, location, and food were exceptional. The staff was kind and helpful. We even got upgraded for no extra charge because of another group's cancelation. Transportation to and from the station was provided. Everything was perfect.

Завтраки и ужины (Kaiseki dinner) сервировали прямо у нас в номере, в специальной столовой. Еда была очень изысканной и очень вкусной, все продукты свежайшие. Повар, который приносил еду, всегда объяснял в какой последовательности нужно есть, чтобы почувствовать всю гамму вкуса. Собственный онсен в номере с водой из источника 60 градусов - это отдельное СПА удовольствие. Персонал рекана также был очень любезным. Спасибо за незабываемые впечатления!

Beautiful one night much needed escape from Tokyo with my just my husband. Everything about the room and the service was perfect. We were picked up at the station exactly as promised. Our room and open air bath and balcony and Mountain View were about as romantic as it gets. We spent the evening relaxing and enjoying the bath in the magical rain and the comfort of yukata and were happy to not go anywhere. The private dinner and breakfast were both delicious and all of the ingredients were very fresh. And though we had planned to take a bus the next morning, the staff drove us to the station instead even helping keep our bags dry in the rain. So much care and attention to detail. We hope to have the opportunity to return and will absolutely recommend.

It was so peaceful and relaxing. The staff who mostly helped us with meals and the reception drink was fabulous.

There was some disrepair in the onsen with rotted wood that had not been replaced and no ability to hold luggage after checkout.

The location was too remote. we could not walk to anything. I have stayed in many ryokans round Japan. This one was the worst one I have come across

The onsen was too hot. We were told to put in cold water, but it took a long time. If I had tried the onsen without caution I would have received 2nd degree burns. The thermometer did not work.

Everything was excellent. The hotel staff was incredibly welcoming and kind, and the overall hospitality made us feel very comfortable throughout our stay. It was the perfect way to end our trip to Japan — slowing down and relaxing in the private onsen was a truly memorable experience.

Wonderful stay. The dinner and breakfast were delicious and full of fresh fish and vegetables. The onsen bath in our room was a highlight of our trip. Our beds were comfortable, and we were able to have two separate bedrooms so our kids could have their own room. The staff were incredibly hospitable. We hope to stay here someday again.

The staff at Hakone Kylan were exceptional. Before we arrived, we were contacted by the staff to inquire on any food allergies, possible modes of transportation, and suggested arrival times to make the most of our stay. The shuttle service offered was easy to coordinate in advance, which they seem to prefer to organize everything well. From the moment we arrived, we were met with fantastic service and the staff member (I didn’t catch his name, but he also picked us up) took the time to go through the room with us and share more about the location. The food was nothing short of amazing, and was delivered in a timely manner. The onsen in our room was beautiful, and had a great view of the mountains. I would recommend this location to anyone!

The rooms could be considered a bit dated, however we did not mind. It felt more traditional in comparison to modern hotels.

The room is amazing, the staff super friendly and helpful. If you sleep there in the middle of your trip, you feel recharged for the next half of the travel. Every facility is in your room, you could go there even without luggages.

The location is in the hill above Hakone, wonderful place but with limited access to bus/train and similar; so you will need a little of organization if you are coming with luggages. Nothing crazy, just worth mentioning that's not where you go if you want stay in hakone for the evening and come back, it's a wonderful place to go, stay there and relax

We had a wonderful two night stay. The staff was so kind and the daily Kaiseki meals were 5 star and abundant. Our thermal baths were amazing and we used them at least two times daily.

Clean and comfortable for our room with western style bed. But our friend’s room with futon was not as comfortable and it is difficult to get out to the balcony

So relaxing and staff were there to make sure we were comfortable at all times. The included meals in the private dining room were delicious and beautiful. The in room onsen was amazing. Extremely hot at first but there was a cold water tap to cool it down.

Slippers in the rooms and pajamas would have been nice features to have included in the rooms.

The entire personnel was most attentive, polite and dedicated to our needs. The property is extremely relaxing and every effort is made to have its clientele experience the true sense of Japanese culture, from the private onsen to the meals. Fish lovers will be overwhelmed! Guaranteed! Although somewhat pricy, this ryokan is definitely worth every penny. I strongly recommend this establishment. Note to parents with young children: This type of environment is designed for couples wishing to relax. Kindly leave your kids at home.

An incredible stay including a free room upgrade due to a cancellation. The beautiful surroundings, delicious food and in-room onsen had us very relaxed during our brief stay in Hakone. Will absolutely be back on future trips to Japan.

I usually try to add something i didnt like. But it is a struggle here... can be hard to book taxis is all, but Hakone Kyuan offer a shuttle service free of charge so this issue was quickly solved.

Excellent ryokan experience. The entire staff was amazing in guiding us in and ensuring our stay was the best. We enjoyed having our meals in the same private dining room each day. Each meal was served beautifully with explanations of the dishes. The ryokan is very quiet and relaxing. We rarely saw or heard the other guests.

The location could be a minor issue, but only because it is not easy to walk there. They did an excellent job of communicating our options for their shuttle, so we were never delayed waiting for their shuttle service. So location is actually good, since they are excellent shuttle service.

Breakfast was amazing as was the food they served in general. Service was very comforting and personable, which aligned with the atmosphere of the place. We also loved the room we stayed at and the view. Comfortable bed and day bed with relaxing bath!

A little bit secluded location so it might be difficult to get to through public transportation, but it was great that they were able to drop us off at the nearest train station after checkout.

Truly a unique stay. Great views, very high service level, great food, and amazing private onsen. We had a Superior Room, which was expensive, but definitely worth it. Perfect place for a honeymoon or couples visit. Had a great massage in the room (for additional cost). Definitely a hotel experience where you «do not leave your room» at all, and you just relax, unbothered, and have meals served in your room, enjoying the private onsen and views. Highlight of our Japan trip.

We had to pay ~50 USD for checking out 1 hour late (noon, agreed in advance), which I think is really a crazy charge to impose customers who just paid 950 USD for a hotel night, and this fee is regardless of hotel availability. It is also quite remote and requires some planning around trains and buses to get there from Tokyo, and heavy traffic congestion delayed us nearly 1 hour on public transportation, which you should be aware of when booking. Earliest check-in time is 15:00, with no flexibility, and they won’t even pick you up at the bus stop before 15:00, which is also a clear drawback for a 950 USD hotel night.

Traditional Japanese Food is very different than American style! But that is okay. I tried a little bit of everything, but couldnt finish the food.

We had a great stay, very comfortable and quiet and loved the private onsen which we used regularly. The owner and staff were very welcoming and explained all about the facilities and were very helpful with shuttles etc. The food was an amazing experience. It helps if you like seafood and fish as it’s heavily biased towards that cuisine although some Wagyu. We stayed for two nights so both evening meals and breakfasts were different.

This is an outstanding small Ryokan. The food is the best we’ve had in two weeks in Japan - broad range with no ‘fillers’ of tofu! The private onsen in the individual rooms was perfect for reticent westerner or mixed gender pair. However, the best feature was the care of the proprietor - every detail thought through. We’ve also stayed in a larger more expensive and renowned Ryoken in Hakone and can safely say that Kyuan is both much better and much better value.

The most beautiful hotel room we’ve ever stayed in, incredible views and staff were incredible. Staff were incredibly respectful and attentive, we were welcomed so wonderfully. The view of the mountains was stunning. Our room had a private Onsen which was incredible and peaceful. Food was some of the best food I’ve eaten in Japan!

Cet établissement de petite taille est plein de charme. L’intérieur est très beau. Le personnel est aux petits soins. La chambre est magnifique et c’est une expérience hors du temps que de se faire servir ses repas en chambre avec une personne attitrée qui s’occupe de notre bien être durant 2 ou 3h au moins.

Au vu des contraintes de la navette et la multiplicité des transports à prendre depuis la gare de shinkansen de Odawara, nous recommandons le taxi qui est très bon marché, d’autant que les horaires de check-in sont contraignants. Le repas kaseki était très bon (même si certaines saveurs sont surprenantes pour un européen, mais c’est le but que de découvrir cette cuisine). L’onsen privé est bien chaud mais le bain est un peu petit si on veut s’y tenir a 2. Le petit déjeuner japonais est une expérience intéressante et très bonne même si si personnellement j’ai eu une overdose de poisson. Bref un tres bel hotel, pour ceux qui veulent vivre une expérience de dépaysement dans une ambiance luxueuse et traditionnelle.

The location is bad that you cannot even take a walk after dinner(we didn't expect to have a very nice walk, but it's literally just on the road and there's no place to walk to) The room are very old and very bad, I could not believe how lame it was when I first walked in. And it really wasn't a comfortable stay,e.g there is a cabinet door that had fallen off, and they didn't bother to repair it and just put a chair there so that it does not fall

the onsen was an exceptional experience. Being vegetarian we could not get much of our choice of food. but the staff were helpful in providing what is available as vegan.

Amazing stay, it was a truly relaxing experience! The staff were so lovely and kind, nothing was too much and they took time to explain each item we were eating (food was fantastic). The room was spacious and the onsen was lovely!
