Guthrie Cottage

I very much appreciated my host couple providing a GF breakfast. It was a spacious accommodation with off-street parking and furnished to complement the vintage of the handsome house.

The weather stayed cold, so I could have done with a quilt or extra blankets.

Great location. The host(s) was available and appropriately communicable. Bed was very comfortable and the extra bedding provided was required as it was in the middle of winter and cold - additional comforter and blanket. The pictures were true. Very clean - including the condition of the rooms, bedding and the kitchen equipment. The decor was stepping back in time - included in this 'like' section as it was unexpected. The veranda faced west so the lounge and entrance was sunny in the afternoon. I stayed mid July 2026 for 3 nights.

A shower box (large!) would be better than the existing wet area, open shower, as the water is not contained by the curtain or fall of the floor towards the drain. Therefore the bathroom floor, as warned by the host, gets wet very easily. As a guest I had to use the flannel provided to wipe the floor each time the shower was used. The unit is cold in the winter when I occupied it and it was sunny, but in the shade it was cold and mornings and evenings were cold. Could do with a heat pump. The electric heaters provided barely meant the unit was warm. No heated towel rail so towels continually damp. I acknowledge improvements may mean a higher price.

Spacious lounge, good facilities and excellent library. A very nice continental breakfast.

Bed was smaller than we are used to but appreciate that a bigger bed wouldn’t be possible.

It was a typical 1920's/30's villa converted to b&b. A little drafty and not very soundproof, but nevertheless good value. The heating system perhaps could be upgraded with a modern heat pump rather than the provided oil heater, ...but all minor issues.

Loved the extras - light turned on when we were out and came back from outing at night and the heater turned on. It was much appreciated on a cold night - and the finishing touch of a chocolate each. Thankyou Anna and Malcom

Preis-Leistungsverhältnis war sehr gut. Frühstück ausreichend für 2 Personen aber nichts besonders. Malcolm war super nett und hat uns direkt Tips für die Umgebung gegeben. Es war etwas hellhörig, aber super liebevoll eingerichtet, mit vielen kleinen besonderen Details. Besonders der Garten und die Außenanlage waren super hübsch. Das Badezimmer hatte einen speziellen, etwas retro gehaltenen Stil. Für ein paar Tage Aufenthalt war das Cottage vollkommen ausreichend, aber für mehr als 2 Personen nicht geeignet.

Breakfasts were great. Location was excellent for us. Cllose to friends. Accessible by bike.

It was a super convenient place to stay. Very cozy, lots of cool finishing touches like the breakfast, tea, coffee etc. They even put the heater on before I arrived. It was simple but perfect. Friendly owners, great communicators.

Large comfortable unit/apartment that had everything that I needed for my one night stay. The owner was very welcoming and helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

Lovely cottage, clean, well equipped - a truly lovely experience.

My problem was that it was very impersonal. We never met our host, not even just to say hello. This led to us feeling that we were not really welcome but just useful to fill the booking. Maybe this is a culturel thing, I don't know, but it seems a shame that hosts do not seem interested in their guests. This comment does not only address this host but it is something we have noticed in using b&bs in NZ.

Great comfortable and spacious cottage with a beautiful garden, within walking distance to Havelock North. Nice self catered breakfast, lacked for nothing. Good value for money. Would stay again, highly recommend.

It was a very good price to include breakfast. What a delightful space to relax in. Loved the gardens and the antiquiness of it! Had everything I needed and more!

Location , cost and beautiful gardens.

I did give 9 months notice to cancel the booking. That was refused. I was disappointed by that but luckily the rest of our wedding party were just around the corner. Couldn’t get the Tele to work we had to stream something from our phone.

Lovely gardens and gorgeous character full place to stay. We also appreciated the remote no hassle check in.

Gorgeous gardens surrounding the house, very affordable for staying one night, clean accommodation, comfortable bed and linens, nicely decorated bedroom, in a quiet residential neighborhood. One of the hosts, the gentleman, was very friendly and welcoming and gave us some interesting history on the house and tips on tourist attractions (the other host seemed put out by our arrival however and was a bit chastising since we hadn’t seen the check in instructions which we somehow inadvertently missed -that’s our fault yes, but the reaction from her was nonetheless not very welcoming. Perhaps she was just having a bad day).

The living room was very dark with fluorescent lighting; the only source of natural light from that room was from the french doors entering from the front porch which necessitated keeping the blinds closed for privacy as it faced a street (had to dress in living room as bedroom was too tiny for luggage/dressing). That’s just the layout of this particular room, for future travellers to take note of. Another room may be more private. We managed as it was just a 1 night stay for us. Furniture was heavy and dark in living room taking up a lot of space ; this area could use some updating, decluttering , reinventing and lightening up. Small breakfast table was inaccessible unless you moved things around (kitchen and living room share same space). Breakfast was uninspiring: such as slices of bread in a ziplock, canned fruit and yoghurt in small bowls covered with saran wrap, milk bottle partly filled with milk and covered with saran (we chose to eat elsewhere).

I'm a frequent business traveller and have stayed in dozens of places in New Zealand over the past few years. Without doubt, Guthrie Cottage is one of the best places I've stayed at. It beats the five-star hotels, and I have stayed in many of them. The accommodation is basically half the entire house. Beautiful Victorian-style interior with a separate bedroom, bathroom and kitchen/lounge. Fantastic! Absolutely recommended

Cosy and welcoming. Hosts sent us directions and left heating and lighting on for our arrival each evening. Loved having the big sitting room to lounge and relax.

Bed is only a double bed, and bedding came off easily. It was advertised as a double bed, but you forget how small a double is when you are used to a queen or bigger!

Understand the bathroom is basically a wet room but maybe shower water could be contained more or drainage improved, as water tends to run out onto rest of floor, also a heated towel rail would be a bonus.

Loved how it was in theme and lots of little bits of thoughtfulness. Breakfast was simple but delicious and just what we needed. Gardens amazing and created an ambience of peace and quiet. Central to everything we needed.

Bed was a little small to what we were used to however it again fitted the old fashioned theme which was nice. It was not something we didnt like but we did notice that water from the shower got to all parts of the bathroom even with the curtains closed so we had to be mindful not to slip until we could mop it all up.

Great old England style cottage and very well decorated in excellent furniture and decoration matched the style. Melcolm also helped us to fix our car problems, much appreciated!

Very spacious and clean apartment.

Very limited choice for breakfast. Milk was frozen solid and had to be left out of the fridge overnight to thaw out, then barely enough milk for cereal and coffee.

Malcolm was very helpful and welcoming. Fitted us in when we arrived a day early. Also provided food for breakfast.
