Locationa and facilities

The houghton suite rooms lack alot of maintenance as the carpets are filthy and the room has some terrible smell coming from the carpet. It gave a very experience considering we had booked a few rooms.

The hotel staff were kind and helpful.

The hotel staff tried to be helpful. They struggled to find my booking on the system - it appeared they needed more training. The room was not as requested and I emailed the property to confirm the room was per the pictures and it wasn't. The room needs a paint and looks tired. The hairdryer was broken and there was no adapter to fit it in the apartment. It took a while to get a replacement from the hotel. The room was however clean.

The bed was extremely uncomfortable.. we complained twice, mattress got changed but was really uncomfortable..

It was a really good room and all the staff was very helpful. The food was amazing and the service was great.

I did not like the light on the WIFI router on the ceiling that was on during the night.

Suited us well for our purposes and enjoyed our morning swimming in indoor pool and sitting around the pool area - very pleasant and relaxing before attending a wedding at Shepstone Gardens.

There were a number of issues: no coat-hangars in the cupboard; aircon wasn’t working properly so quite warm even though it was set on 19 and high and eventually after two attempts to get it sorted they brought in a portable air-cooler (like a fan with ice in); safe deposit box didn’t work even after someone came to check and reset it;1 bedside lamp needed repair and new globe; only 1 chair at the little dining table and not 2. Advertised as LUXURY apartments but no shower cap or face cloth and bath towels were adequate size, average/small size. Kitchen excellent appliances but no instructions on use, no dishwasher powder, no corkscrew or can opener so utensils to use the pots provided were VERY limited. We didn’t really need them but had we required them we would’ve had to make yet another call to reception. I did speak to the housekeeping lady as we were leaving and suggested that routine checks should be done on the facilities to make sure the room is in order. On the positive side all the staff were very friendly and helpful.

The jacuzzi water was hard on the skin - recommend using spa tablets instead of chlorine or whatever it is that makes the water so harsh

No external sign saying Houghton Suites. Says Houghton Hotel only. Driver found it so hard to find. And we were tired from long flight.

The purpose of my stay was to have access to water during water-shedding in another part of the city. It was really great to have access to running water. The big screen tv was nice too.

When the tv was switched off, one could hear the hum of the Aircon, or the father playing with his child in the room next. There was definitely a dog barking in one of the rooms further down the passage. This place is no soundproof, as advertised. I’m not sure if the Nova Bistro restaurant is part of the hotel but the “The Houghton Hotel Hustle” is when they tell you at checkin where breakfast is, but don’t tell you it’s not included in your stay. I had about 7min to eat a dry muffin and order a take away then got a shock to see a bill of R250.00 for the breakfast. I hadn’t checked out because my partner had more time to prepare for the day. I didn’t have a wallet because I didn’t expect to have to pay for anything. I thought breakfast was included. The waiter tried to follow me to my car, even ran with me, then he realised I wasn’t checked out so he could deliver it to a room. The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth at the time, but now I’m over it cause when I treat myself to an expensive meal, I can always compare it to the “Houghton Hotel Hustle”. Thank you for the stay, and the water.

It was exquisite. The staff were accommodating, the room was always clean and fully stocked. It is well looked after and truly felt like a home away from home. Extremely comfy.

The only disappointment was that the water temperature was not too warm. Hence having a semi-cold shower. I’m not sure if the geyser was faulty or if the water temperature is limited.

the aircons were not working and no one seemingly knew anything about it. first night we suffered the entire night as there was no maintenance team to sort out the aircons. the second day the room was changed and when we complained again there’s no air conditioning, the staff kept insisting there’s load shedding and as soon as the loadshedding ends the aircons will work again. . at 8pm when the loadshedding was meant to end we tried again and waited an hour for it to get cool - it didn’t. it took an hour for someone to come out to look at the room/aircon to tell us that yes it’s definitely not working but there’s nothing they can do because there’s no alternate rooms available. this was at 10:30 pm!! i am pregnant and have very high blood pressure and I suffered for 2 days straight! will never ever ever stay at the place ever again. i would rather stay at a 2 star place that has aircons!!!

The staff were wonderful, so accommodating, friendly and professional, especially the front desk staff (Jasmine I think at check-in, sorry if name is incorrect) and door men, Spa team and housekeeping. the hotel is also spotlessly clean and well maintained.
