Reviewed Sep 10, 2026Amazing experience. The staff service is next-level. The dinner is a MUST, everything was so delicious. Breakfast was also great. The location is great, highly recommend checking out the village and seeing the Jigoku/hells. The room was amazing. Tatami room with Zataku and Zaisu for relaxing. While dinner is being served the staff prepares your futon. There is a twin bed if you are unable to sleep on the futon. The room was large, clean, and had an elevated feel. The facilities are wonderful, the public bath is very relaxing. The gift shop is worth checking out for souvenirs and omiyage. Be sure to have cash for the gift shop. There is an ATM in the post office at the other end of town. If you are taking the bus after checkout, the staff will drive you to the bus station. Very helpful since it is uphill.
My shower had slightly weird pressure issues but still usable.

Reviewed Jul 13, 2026Das Restaurant ist fantastisch, somit das Frühstück und das Abendessen. Das Restaurant hat einen Designerpreis erhalten, zu Recht! Die Lage ist herrlich. Wie man beim Buchen sieht, liegt die Unterkunft direkt an einem See, der Ausblick ist atemberaubend! Es gibt ein Bad für Männer und für Frauen. Man kann nur getrennt baden. Ist ein Erlebniss! Habe es sehr genossen!
Was man wissen muss: das Restaurant ist supermodern und neu gemacht. Der Rest des Hotels ist etwas in die Jahre gekommen, aber hat seinen Charme. Mir kam es etwas vor wie ein 5* Hotel in den 70er Jahren. Aber ist sehr authentisch und sehr japanisch.

The size of the outdoor bath attached to our room looked much bigger in the picture. The picture made it look like the bath stretched out close to the edge which would’ve provided a more spectacular view. The bath was still sizable, but about 70% of what is depicted in the picture is about 5cm of water covering a recessed section of the floor to allow excess water to flow out. Despite this I would still recommend staying here.

My partner said it was the best meal he had in this life which made his mother and me upset. But it was good. Onsen was very clean and good quality of Onsen. Well written instructions were very helpful. The room we stayed AMAZING.thank you Booking.com.

Reviewed May 11, 2026Amazing place by the lake in Unzen. Beautiful Japanese rooms and very nice staff making the stay comfortable. Very good onsen with both indoor and outdoor pools. Dinner in the hotel was absolutely amazing, with star chef. Beautiful location and close to the village.
The facility is slightly dated on the outside but the interior is renovated and nice.

Reviewed May 7, 2026This is the second time my friend and I stayed in this ryokan - this time we brought a visitor from the US to show her Unzen and its beauty. The hotel itself is comfortable and wonderful, and the location is hard to beat - right in front of a small mountain lake. The food is always excellent and this time the American visitor didn't eat fish so the hotel was able to substitute all her fish dishes for non-fish dishes. Everyone really enjoyed our time there, thank you so much!
Honestly the only issue with this hotel that I've ever had was that the pillows are "buckwheat" pillows stuffed with hollow plastic shells. But even though I dislike the feel, I always find I sleep on them much better than I expect to. They may be a challenge for people who are stomach or side sleepers, though.

朝夕食付きで予約したつもりが、朝食のみしか付いていなかった。自分の不注意とも言えるかもしれないものの、「周辺に夕食可能なお店がある」と案内されたのに近辺にコンビニといえるお店はほとんど無く、食事可能な店はあってもコチラの求めるレベルではなく、しかも「早々に閉店してしまう」という店しかないという酷い状況だった。手違いで夕食の予約ができなくてもそれなりにカバーできる対応をお願いしたいものである。

Reviewed Mar 10, 2026朝食のみの一泊。 車でないとアクセスが難しい以外は完璧。 スタッフは親切で控えめで丁寧。 朝食は土鍋で炊いたご飯をサーブしてくれる。多すぎるくらいの品数。コーヒーも。 部屋はとても広い和室。施設は年数が経ってるだろうが、とても清潔。目の前はダム湖で、鳥の声しか聞こえない。温泉は露天もあり、こちらも素晴らしい。 次の福岡のホテルも悪くなかったんだが見劣りした。ほんとに素晴らしかった。
公共交通での移動は考えない方が良さそう。遠方からはレンタカーを。

Reviewed Feb 8, 2026Le kaiseki était absolument extraordinaire. Une expérience totalement unique dans une alcôve. Le service était parfait, aux petits soins. Les mets étaient originaux et très goûteux, en particulier le bœuf grillé sur du miso couché sur une feuille de magnolia et la préparation minute devant nos yeux de 3 nigiri sushis. C’était dressé à la perfection et inoubliable. La chambre était confortable avec du mobilier très élégant et avait une très belle vue sur l’étang. Les bains étaient agréables et vastes. Le petit dej était excellent. Excellente idée que des produits servis lors du kaiseki soient proposés à la boutique de l’hôtel.
Seul regret que le shamisen disposé à l’accueil n’ait pas fait l’objet d’une performance. tout était parfait.

Reviewed Jan 13, 2026剛抵達就送上迎賓點心和熱茶，服務用心，雖然只能用英文和日文但溝通很有耐心。房間很大，有湖景，乾濕分離，晚餐過後回到房間榻榻米上就已經鋪好床了。一泊二食餐點精緻，有專屬人員桌邊服務，還有師傅現捏握壽司。大眾浴池設備齊全，很舒服。有興趣可以請飯店協助預約雲仙地獄夜遊活動，如果要去公車站可以找櫃檯人員免費預約飯店接駁車。
非自駕，搭公車去雲仙的話會需要經過一個陡坡才能抵達飯店，如果帶著大行李會比較辛苦，不過後來發現飯店有接駁車，也許可以提前聯繫飯店接送。

Onsen water is nice really hot and nice cold bowl to enjoy with ice cream Dinner was held in hotel restaurant which is a fine-dining+fusion. For older folks it seems bit too much , but for me it was okay. Breakfast was good set.
Onsen is bit of a walk to the other side of building onsen is nice but was not as good as I was expecting on the sight. little run-down bit from no maintenance. Town is quiet not much to do in evening/night.

Reviewed Jan 10, 2026We had a lovely stay at Azumaen. This hotel has a long, rich history, and you can really feel that grand atmosphere. We booked a standard Japanese-style room, which had a very charming "90s retro" feel it was very clean and comfortable. The hot spring facilities are huge! There are hundreds of lockers in the changing area, which shows how popular this place has been over the years. We were lucky because it was very quiet during our visit, so we had a very peaceful soak. The highlights were definitely the meals. Both breakfast and dinner were excellent, and we were so impressed that there was a chef there to hand-press sushi and serve it directly to us! The location is also great; it's just a short, pleasant walk to the town's main attractions. Thank you to the staff for their excellent service. They made us feel very welcome!

Staff came in to set up the futons for three of us which was really nice. The onsen on site was very relaxing.

Reviewed Dec 19, 2025這間大概就是看風景跟泡溫泉 風景真的很不錯，靠湖 一早開窗戶就有湖面感覺很棒！ 晚餐懷石料理很好吃 早餐稍微有點不夠但還是算精緻好吃 泡湯需要另外加收溫泉使用稅 小孩加一個被褥也需要再收錢
服務態度比較不太好 上下隔音不太好 晚上10點服務人員叫我們要換房間 有小孩老人其實非常不方便 來的人臉很臭叫我們要很輕的走路😅 說下面有客人抱怨😫 語言不通溝通花比較長時間 後來他們妥協讓下面的客人換房間⋯⋯ 既然這樣當初就不要排上下啊😅 （整間平日空房率極高） 設施老舊性價比滿低 半夜還要打飛蟲 超級多飛蟲 請人來幫忙打 是用抹布打蟲😅😅 打了五六隻 確定沒有了才能睡覺 如果再去一次 應該有更好的選擇

Reviewed Nov 4, 2025The location of this hotel is excellent - it is situated right in front of the Oshidorino Pond and all the rooms overlook the water. The room was spacious and comfortable and the onsen was really delightful. They have two onsen baths - one indoors and one outdoors. The outdoor onsen overlooks the pond and has a lovely view. The indoor onsen does as well, but the glass is frequently steamed up from the heat. My friend and I did the meals included package and the food was also really excellent - both for dinner and for breakfast. Overall, we were very pleased with the stay.
The pillows. The pillows for the futons were filled with angular, hollow plastic beads and were really loud and uncomfortable to sleep on. Bring your own pillows if you don't like weird, hard Japanese pillows. Everything else was great.

The temperature of the water in the open air private onsen could only be adjusted by calling the staff, there was no cold tap that the guests can self adjust.

Reviewed Aug 27, 2025施設が綺麗で趣があり、料理がとても美味しかったです。アメニティの不足もなく、ホテルスタッフも丁寧で居心地がものすごく良かったです。また利用したいと思います。 ただ、夜に車でどこかに出かける時にはホテル周辺は真っ暗なので気をつけてください。

Reviewed Jul 14, 2025All inclusive hotel with an amazing dinner and breakfast experience - Japanese style with great service. Nice location with the view on the lake. Japanese style rooms well equipped.
Like many other hotels in Japan - the look and feel is a bit outdated, but maybe this is actually what makes these places worth visiting.
