The hardware is really good, really deserve for it
The room is very spacious and clean. The private hot bath in the room is extremely comfortable. The 2nd floor cafe and roof top cafe are good places to have a chill drink and relax. I love the dinner menu while the breakfast has only limited choices. Staff are very polite and helpful. This hotel is definitely a good choice to relax!
Excellent onsen hotel with friendly staff
Everything was just perfect. Dinner was superb. Location and view was just unbelievable. I would recommend this hotel to everyone.
Staff is warm, hospitable and extremely helpful! Would not hesitate to visit again and recommend to friends and family.
Solid hotel. The best fusion French cuisine. Very close to Unzen Jigoku. Friendly service. Comfortable room but there were not heating and AC was at times not strong enough. Onsen in the room was the most relaxing. The town of Unzen had the demeanor of an alpine town. A must visit in this region of Japan!
This hotel is located right in the center of Unzen, a volcanic area. You can see the hot springs from outside your window and from the hotel dining room. It is beautiful inside. Each room has their own (onsen) hot spring bath which they clean each day. Our room faced the mountain. All the rooms include drinks and food. We opted for the breakfast and dinner which was a good decision for us as we did not have a car. The dinner was fabulous and well worth the extra money. The service was impeccable and everyone was super kind.
This is a stunning hotel in a stunning location amidst the fumaroles of Unzen Hells. The property is immaculate. Spacious rooms offer every conceivable comfort - topped by a private onsen on the balcony (fed by those fumaroles). The restaurant offers both Japanese and "Western" menus. Over two nights, we tried both and were blown away by the quality of food. The hotel staff are friendly, relaxed and incredibly attentive.
A stunning property, in a stunning location. The quality of service at the Kyushu Hotel is unsurpassable.
The whole property is recently renovated. The room was spacious with indoor and outdoor sitting areas and a private spring-fed bath overlooking the hot springs and surrounding mountainside. The staff was very attentive and anxious to please. We definitely recommend to others looking for a relaxing getaway.
This is a fabulous hotel. Our room was spacious, with a great sitting area that overlooked the geothermal activity. The bedding was very comfortable. The bath was amazing, really hot and invigorating. The dinner and breakfast were both really good, They have some great French wine that went well with our delicious French dinner.
This is hotel is wonderful. I loved having a private hot spring bath in my own room. The dining experience was a nice mix of western and Japanese cuisine, all perfectly prepared. The location right next to the Unzen National Park cannot be beat. Everything was clean and the staff were friendly and spoke perfect English. Next time I will stay longer because the rooftop lounge is the ideal place to spend a whole day relaxing, reading, and enjoying the nice view.
Best location I have been to in a while! Well worth it!
Given how far away the island of Kyushu is from Tokyo and Osaka/Kyoto, my perception in the past was that of a backwater that lacked sophistication. After numerous trips to all of the Prefectures the past few years, I've come to the realization that it's rich in history, culture, nature and - yes - a wonderful gastronomic identify. Unzen Kyushu Hotel is yet another example of a Kyushu property offering a polished hard product, refined service levels and an incredible dining experience. The property was rebuilt from scratch several years ago, with visions of a modern boutique hotel but with contemporary furnishings with local art. They've done a wonderful job here - the buildings blend into the Unzen environment without dominating the landscape (it's right next to "Unzen Jigoku," aka "Unzen Hell" hot springs.) From most of the rooms as well as the lounge area, you're treated to a front-row seat to the views of Unzen Hell, complete with the strong sulphur smell (which we like, to be honest.) The grounds are immaculately maintained, and it really is a tranquil environment that is at harmony with the area at large. We chose to spend our 3 nights in one of the "Hanare" (detached and separate building) rooms since they provided more privacy and space, although it's at the expense of a view of Unzen Jigoku that other rooms offer. The Hanare room offers bedrooms that are segregated from the living room (a key for us), as well as both an indoor as well as outdoor (open-air) Onsen hot springs bath, which was wonderful. The other benefit of Hanare-staying guests - you get to dine in a separate area, and in a private room, which is important to us, especially during COVID times. As a bonus, for the entire time we were there, the wonderful manager of Unzen Kyushu Hotel (Mr. Taura) personally served us - what a treat! He's an encyclopedia of food knowledge (as well as the local ingredients), and was very enthusiastic in his work. One other major bonus of this hotel, which really delighted us.... the pace of the meals was the best we've ever experienced. Nowhere else have we enjoyed a 9+ course meal in 90 minutes. And it didn't feel rushed at all. It was perfectly paced. Your mileage will vary, and that will be the result of the attentive staff and kitchen, who are quietly monitoring the pace of your food consumption so that everything is served exactly when you'd like it to be. Unzen Kyushu Hotel offers a choice of Japanese and Western-Japanese fusion meals, both for dinner and breakfast. Given we were there for 3 nights, we went with Japanese - Fusion - Japanese, and we were happy with the choice. Everything was unique, varied and umami-filled, even for breakfast, and we felt the quality was up there with the best ryokans and hotels in Japan. By this time, we weren't surprised... Kyushu (and Nagasaki) has awesome seafood, vegetables and fruits (the latter two thanks to the fertile volcanic soil), so chefs have top-notch ingredients to play with. Something "simple" like an Abalone Steak with Abalone liver cream sauce was done to perfection.. it was perfectly cooked, and it was very flavorful without being rich or overpowering; it brought out the best in the Abalone meat. Speaking of meat, we had more than a few beef dishes throughout our time here, and never experienced anything but amazing quality Nagasaki beef. As an aside, we're learning that Wagyu does not start and end with Kobe Beef. On the contrary, we've had just as good (if not better) quality Matsuzaka, Tajima, Hida, Miyazaki, Kumamoto and other varieties of beef during our time in Japan - Kobe beef is marketed very effectively, but it's definitely not the end-all-be-all. Even something as basic as a rice dish (that comes at the end of the kaiseki meal) was much better than the norm. A simple "Matsutake Gohan" (Steamed rice with bamboo shoots) was amazing - we usually don't have more than a bite, since we're full by then (and are watching the carbs), but we wound up finishing an entire bowl of it - we couldn't stop! Breakfast was equally special. While we generally prefer Japanese breakfasts (and it was the case here as well), they did a wonderful job with the Western choices also. The Eggs Benedict, French Toast and the Japanese Sea Bream Meunière provided us with a great start to the day. Overall, we felt the contemporary but tasteful build of the property, combined with the elegant and friendly staff, comfortable rooms, wonderful Onsen quality and amazing food (with a choice of fusion or Japanese meals) resulted in an almost perfect stay at Unzen Kyushu Hotel.
While this hotel has been in operation since 1917, the entire facility was rebuilt just a couple of years ago. The rooms are spacious and well appointed, with a Japanese style "sitting room", king-size beds, and a private onsen (mineral hot springs) bath, as well as a balcony with views of the famous Unzen Jigoku (hells)--a moonscape-looking hillside full of steaming fumaroles and mud pots. (Be sure to walk through!) The hotel's facilities are super comfortable and the staff are both friendly and gracious. My package included dinner and breakfast, both gourmet meals made mostly with local ingredients. Every course was delicious! After dinner I relaxed in the rooftop lounge with a glass of red wine and a massage chair. Finally, I finished the day in my private onsen bath, milky water with a slight sulfur smell. It left my skin feeling soft and supple. I wish I could have really relaxed by staying a second night!
We stayed in premium king bed room with terrace for one night. The hotel is new and sits next to Jigoku hot spring head. The volcanic smoky view from most rooms and dining room is spectacular, although strong sulfur smell. The hot spring water is milky white. Our skin felt do smooth after dipping. The hotel is new with modern architectural design. Courtyard with water feature and patio for viewing and lounging was artful. Our room was spacious with three siting areas. The bathroom has a private ofuro looking into Jigoku park. Overall the physical building structure is well throughout. Unfortunately the soft touches that usual Japanese onsen ryokan offers were lacking. The synthetic material of lounging wear was scratch, no skincare lotions in bathroom etc. Dinner and breakfast were Japanese and Western fusion. Some dishes were creative and delicious but some missed the mark. The main course for dinner was Kyushu beef steak, which was tough and hard to cut and chew. It's a letdown in otherwise a good dinner meal. The hotel has potential to be great as time goes on. The owner has his visions in providing a modern Japanese onsen hotel experience to travelers to Unzen. We want to thank Yuriko San, owner's wife, for her hospitality and hope to return again in other seasons.
Location is perfect. The staff are very polite and friendly. The room is very spacious and the dinner they serve is of excellent quality. The only regret is that the in room onsen is a bit small and they do not provide big bath onsen.
Our business partners kindly booked this beautiful oasis for a three nights stay.. Six of us occupied 3 rooms. My wife and I enjoyed the private onsen in the bedroom with a beautiful view. Though some of my group members had different requests the owner Aki and his charming wife Yukiko accommodated all our requests! This hotel has just 26 suites..! Has a lot of history as it’s over 100 years old. Poets, Emperors have passed through her doors and enjoyed its hospitality and surroundings. Aki is the great great grand son of the founder. By the way a special mention of their dinner meal service which is a ten course affair and take one and a half hours and served and presented in Michelin star perfection! We shall return!
Booked 2 rooms for 4 people on Jun 24 for JPY28,000 per person. Hotel is new and you can easily find out that all materials used are of excellent quality. Room is big with private onsen. Actually all rooms are with private onsen and there is no public bath in the hotel. Hotel staff are extremely kind and courteous. The welcome cake is delicious as well. Free car parking is provided and it is just next to the hotel entrance. The view from the room is gorgeous as you can see the whole Unzen hell area. Don't forget to spend 40 minutes to walk around the Unzen hell area where you can take a lot of beautiful photos. The cafe bar on 2/F provides free drinks before dinner. There is also a self-service bar (also free of charge) at the top floor after dinner. These are good places to relax and chat with friends. There are 2 massage chairs in the self-service bar but I didn't have a chance to try. 8 course dinner is served; both the look and taste are good. I have to mention that the tableware used is amazing. I particularly admire that the plates used are different for each course. Breakfast is also great. It will be totally perfect if the private onsen is a bit bigger. It is a bit crowded for 2 people. The balcony outside the bath is a plus. It is so comfortable to relax on the sofa in the balcony after a hot bath. All in all, the Unzen area is a good place to relax and definitely I will stay at Unzen Kyushu Hotel next time when I visit this area.
Beautiful hotel. Wonderful, friendly staff that seem to work all day long, led by a young couple that continues as fourth-generation owners of the hotel. The hotel is sitting right on top of the hot springs. As you drive in, there's a bunch of steam clouds and then there's the hotel. The hotel was completely rebuilt and reopened this past May. The number of guestrooms went from ~100 to ~20 rooms with all guestrooms facing the hot springs and a big open courtyard. Definitely has a modern aesthetic with some traditional elements. Rooms are generously large with tatami sitting area, large walk-in closet, large couch seating overlooking the springs through picture window, outdoor patio, plus the fantastic ofuro constantly filling with onsen water. The bath water is marvelously hot. Very quiet and peaceful location, restful sleeps. The hot springs is just a few minute walk out the hotel and easy stroll thru the town shops. There are a bunch of old posters and photos of the hotel in the dining area. The dining room has a retro early days feel to it. Meals are excellent. Western and Japanese breakfast options. Lots of local ingredients and dishes. Probably ate a whole farm at the meals--fish, chicken, beef, more fish and seafood. Meals can be taken wearing the "housewear" provided in the guestroom. Rooftop lounge has indoor and outdoor areas.
