Breathtaking view and terrace outside the room. Soothing sounds of the surf 24 hours a day
Food at the restaurant was average but expensive for the town
Location of the property is still beautiful.
We stayed here 10 years ago. First off, we didn’t get the room we booked and were told it was our fault because we didn’t specify which suite we wanted. Ens of story. No apology, no we will fix it. The hot water was broken at the suite we got and they were working on it during our first day there. The vibe has completely changed. It used to be a funky, relaxed and beautiful place to stay. Now it’s all about the restaurant, which appears to be frequented by people not staying at the property. The prices are ridiculous for sub-par to bad food. It’s all about the turn and burn so they try and run you off before you’re even done eating. As a guest paying almost 600 a night I expect to be able to sit on a lounger in the evening and enjoy the beach without being harassed by the restaurant staff. They harass you to get moving even in the morning when there’s no one there. They quit serving the only redeeming thing in the menu which is their fresh fruit juices at 1230. Lastly, we are a hetero couple, but noticed that for a gay friendly place, there is an undertone of anger or distaste. We could never put our finger on it, but el Alquimista has completely changed in an awful way. We spent the majority of our time elsewhere and just slept on the property. There are far friendlier places with tasty local food and kind people on the beach.
Service. Position. Beauty of the place.
All was good.
Great location. Super staff. Amazing atmosphere. Something very unique.
Nothing.
Beautiful, tranquil location. Spaces are designed well, fit into the environment with exceptional details. Yoga class was a wonderful experience, excellent instructor in a calming space.
The access road is a little tricky to navigate in the rainy season.
El Alquimista is one of those rare places that exceeds every expectation. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely immersed in the beauty and tranquility of Zipolite. The location is absolutely spectacular—right on the beach with breathtaking ocean views, incredible sunsets, and the soothing sound of the waves as a constant backdrop. The rooms are beautifully designed, comfortable, and impeccably maintained. Waking up each morning to the Pacific Ocean just steps away felt like a dream. The entire property blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings, creating an atmosphere that is both luxurious and wonderfully relaxed. The restaurant deserves special praise. Every meal was exceptional, with fresh ingredients, delicious local flavors, and an unbeatable beachfront setting. Whether it was breakfast overlooking the sea or dinner under the stars, every dining experience felt special. What truly sets El Alquimista apart is the sense of peace it creates. The yoga classes, spa treatments, and adults-only pool provide the perfect opportunity to unwind and reconnect. Despite its tranquil atmosphere, the hotel is also ideally located for exploring the charm of Zipolite and the surrounding Oaxacan coast. Most importantly, the staff were outstanding—warm, attentive, and genuinely committed to making every guest feel welcome. Their hospitality elevated an already incredible stay. If you're looking for a place that combines natural beauty, comfort, exceptional food, and genuine relaxation, El Alquimista is an absolute gem. We left feeling refreshed, inspired, and already planning our return.
Nothing, it was perfect!
Beautiful property and beautiful pool. Excellent location.
First time at Alquimista and it was amazing. The room was pretty small but it had everything one needs including a hammock. It was just steps to the beach and the whole place is just so peaceful and quiet. It was the end of the season though and I imagine during the winter it will get a bit more lively. There's a restaurant that opens 7am to 11:30pm, the staff is amazing as well. I've been to Zipolite a few times before and it will now be very hard to stay anywhere else since nothing is going to match this place.
Even though I love the restaurant setting, and the opening hours (7am coffee at an empty beach!) I am not a fan of the food. It is a bit of a random selection between Mexican and Pizza but none of it was amazing. At least not what I tried. It is also about double the price of many other places that at least in my opinion serve better food.
Very friendly staff, great beach location and amazing restaurant.
During very hot days with limited breeze, it can be a struggle to cool the room. That just means more frequent dips in the ocean.
It’s one of my favorite places in the world.
The property is perfect. Sometimes the grid in this area is unreliable so you can be without power for a while, but that’s normal here.
Het personeel, de service en de locatie
Luxurious accommodations at the far end of the beach. Super staff from front desk to housekeeping to restaurant servers. Beautiful secluded pool area.
Room was quite dark but spacious. Quite a walk from hotel to Playa Del Amor.
Great location, great environment and beach bar. Suite was quite large
The mattress was pretty stiff. Expect some anta in the room.
The El Alquimista is just gorgeous. A spectacular setting right on the beach with a great restaurant and cocktail bar. Our room was very special above the restaurant which is right on the beach. We looked over the crashing waves and could also see all the way down Zipolite Beach. Meals at the restaurant were absolutely delicious with a modern interpretation of Mexican food as well as other international cuisines.
The property location is wonderful you’re steps away from town and fantastic restaurants but it feels very private and secluded.
The water pressure is hit or miss as was the hot water.
Había mucho olor a humedad .
Great vibe and location
The service definitely needs some improvement
Todo
Que no incluía un simple desayuno
Sencillamente excelente!!!
The location on the cove at the beach was great! The beach staff were generally friendly.
The rooms were sparse. Without decor or much furniture. I realize the vibe is rustic but this is nowhere near the luxury pice tag. The room had a musty smell. Over our 5 days stay we didn’t realize it but the air conditioning leaked and ended up soaking our luggage and clothes. Reception seemed very uninterested in helping.
Everything !! Like paradise
Nothing
Location was poetic and hotel staff cared greatly about a dislocated knee injury that I had just sustained the night before I checked in. They were attentive to my needs and cared about customer experience, so for that I am thankful.
I came to Zipolite hoping to be able to enjoy some tranquil anonymity, so the overly attentive staff stressed me out a bit. However, I fully acknowledge that this is a somewhat good problem to have. My first hotel room at Alquimista (the suite), while impressive at a general level, one of the pillow cases had cigarette burn marks, and one of the 'clean' towels had questionable stains that led me to use my own towel instead. The room locking system is reduced to padlocks that can easily be picked, so this is something to take in mind if you care greatly for your security. The second room I stayed at had the shower head suspended from the ceiling with a makeshift string contraption (see photo) and came off the wall with a simple nudge. I had to waste time during my stay to deal with reporting this issue, and because they refused (politely) to move me to another room, I had to wait around for maintenance to enter the room to do plumbing. Overall I lost at least 2 hours of the time that I paid for because of this issue. For the price that I paid for the hotel, these issues are unacceptable and it would be nice to be compensated for loss of use value. Hope this review helps.
Such a Charming hotel, the staff was super friendly, wonderful restaurant on site also.
This was our second time staying at the property and it absolutely lived up to our expectations. The food is always delicious and the location is the best in town.
Excellent Food, beach and staff. A bit pricier than other restaurants but excellent quality. Drinks also a bit overpriced. Perfect beach, very popular very diverse.
Toilet door left little privacy and it was made of sticks and did not latch. No blackout curtains. The sun was in my face as soon as it came up. Bring eye covers so that the sun won't disturb your sleep. My bed frame was very squeeky room 27.
The food at the restaurant was delicious and the staff great. Beautiful beach and short walking distance to village center. Playa del Amor only about 2 km away
Better to get a room with an ocean view
This is a remarkable beach hotel built with simple but spacious rooms, a lovely pool area surrounded with birdsong, a great yoga studio, and an attentive and friendly staff. The restaurant is right on the beach and you can stay as long as you like with comfortable spots for reading and writing. The garden-like setting, the beach access, and the staff make this a sure beat if you want an authentic Mexican travel experience.
The restaurant is quite good; however, it would be nice to see more regional cuisine and inventive cocktails. The Mexican dishes on the menu are by the far the best.
Resturant was fantastic. Delicious and healthy food, served right on the beach
Location, staff and vibe are 10/10!!
Beautiful resort! It is located directly on the prettiest part of the beach, and we loved waking up every morning to see the sunrise and the waves. A casual but elevated experience. We definitely will stay there again the next time we are in Zipolite!
There are a ton of scams that come after you make your booking. The property warns you about this, but does not seem to be doing enough to stop it.
A suíte foi perfeita
O quarto individual estava muito obscuro
The staff and customer service is what truly separates this hotel from any of the others on the beach. The staff, Julianna especially, is just a gem. But, everybody you encounter at this hotel are wonderful and exceptional. Seems like there should be more beach lounge cushions. But, guess what? All you have to do is ask, and they will bring you more, and set you up like a bowling pin with a table and umbrella. Customer service from front desk, restaurant and beach area is just stellar!
Not a darn thing.
Room is beautiful. Beach is gorgeous. Pool is an amazing sanctuary of quiet beauty. Restaurant food was delicious. Staff couldn't be nicer or more helpful.
They could use three times the number of Beach Beds. ALL the reviews I read said ask for a room away from the restaurant if you want any hope of a late afternoon nap or going to sleep early. Unfortunately, my beautiful room was right in the path of the Loud Pulsating music that was playing at the restaurant at both 5 pm and 10 pm.
Beachfront, food, vibe.
Everything
N/A
The property was clean and comfortable. The staff was also very nice. The junior suite is a very nice room and we loved the plunge pool!
Robes would be a nice plus. Also a few more lounge chairs at the beach would be great. We camped out two days next door where we had to buy food and drinks ($300peso min per person) to find a comfy spot to sit.
Stunning rustic hotel build into the hill and rolling out onto the beach
Nothing
I've stayed here many times. It is located at the best part of the beach ...magical. Great vibe
everything was great
Location,rooms, bed, restaurant, Food, staff.
Food and drinks are a bit expensive.
Location on beach. Very understated style. Felt like you were living on the beach but with all the facilities
Loved it all
Great location, right on the most beautiful beach in Zipolite
The hotel is at a great location, right on Zipolite beach. We loved getting out of bed, opening our doors and walking right onto the sand. There is a very good restaurant on property that's right on the beach with a huge selection of food options. The staff are friendly and accommodating and keep an eye on the chaise lounges at the beach and also on what's going on in the water (there can be big waves). The staff were helpful at arranging discounted airport transfers. When we were there, the yoga program had one class a day with a great teacher (Maila) who taught a blend of iyengar + hatha styles.
While not expensive by U.S. standards, it's expensive for Zipolite, e.g. cocktails/food 2x-5x vs places nearby. The room met our expectations but online descriptions are confusing and still not sure we got the room type we reserved. Not all rooms have both air conditioning and screens; know in general in Zipolite that you might get mosquito bites without repellent.
