Hotel Hottingen

Superb customer service and a comfortable clean room made this stay a fantastic one for us. Only 5 minutes walk to the art museum and 15 minutes walk to the railway station made this a highly convenient location. Zurich itself is a beautiful and safe city to explore.

Nice staff, quiet room, very good breakfast. Good location, easy accessible. The only slightly negative is that there are no restaurants or shops nearby.

The rooms were large and comfortable. The air conditioning in our room was not able to keep it cool inside. Despite staff repeatedly telling us it was working. The setup for the air conditioning is odd as well. We had to leave the curtains open to have air conditioning. Not the most pleasant way to sleep. Also staff was very good at night. However the lady we dealt with both mornings was very rude and unhelpful. Would be a great place in the winter if you did not require a cool room.

The hotel is in an excellent location, close to trams and the Kunsthaus. We used the communal kitchen and bought pastries from the local bakery for breakfast. The hotel itself is clean and comfortable and the staff were helpful. Would stay here again.

Checked in so early. This hotel is spotless. Reception was overwhelming accommodating.

The staff was really friendly and let us check in early and leave our luggage after check out. The room was nice with a mini fridge, comfortable beds and great air conditioning. It was nice to have the shuttle close by, so getting around the city was easy. The only issue we had was with the shower, the water seemed to get really hot and then cold.

I did LOTS of searching of hotels here on Tripadvisor for our 2 week trip to Europe (June 14 -28) as it was difficult to tell from the various hotels' websites if the rooms truly had air conditioning or not. Hotel Hottingen was one that I confirmed as having AC. However, once checked in and put into room 228, the AC unit would only blow room temperature air around, which was in the mid-80sF. It would not cool the air whatsoever. After about 30 minutes of searching the internet to make sure we operating the AC unit correctly, we opened the window and took the standing fan that was in the room and put it in front of the window to try and suck in some of the slightly cooler air from outside (lower 80sF). I then went downstairs and informed the desk clerk of the situation, and she said there were no other rooms available to move us into that night but that she would leave a note for the morning's desk staff to move us rooms as one would be available the following night. I asked her to come upstairs and see if she could get it to work as we may not being doing it correctly. She agreed, and was not able to get it to cool. She said something was definitely wrong. The next morning, I went downstairs and spoke to the Manager on duty. He told me the AC did work but due to government policies, the room temperature could not be lowered less than 7 degrees than it was outside in order to preserve the structure of the classical building. I told him it was HOTTER in the room than outside (which it was) and that I would love to be able to lower the temperature in the room 7 degrees below what it was outside, but that it was not possible because the AC simply did not work. He then said that European air conditioning doesn't work the way that Americans are used to. I restated that the AC in room 228 did not work at all, in any way. I asked him to go up to the room with me and show me how to make it work. He refused. He then did give us another room, 225, and guess what - the AC worked beautifully. Just to see, I lowered the thermostat way more than 7 degrees below what it was outside at the time (it was about 88F that day) and the room got way colder. We then realized that there was no fan in 225 like there was in 228, so the hotel knew that the AC did not work in 228 and put a fan in there to try and mitigate the situation. Another lying European hotel Manager - just like we would have about a week later when in Munich. Just fix the broken air conditioners, please, and quit lying to customers about it!

Everything was OK, but the dates I was in the hotel were quite hot. I couldn’t activate AC in the room, apparently it’s operated by remote which wasn’t in the room. After my complain the maid gave me the remote and guess what AC still was blowing the hot air and wasn’t working anyway. I checked the AC by the next room and it was fine. Regardless for all my trouble they just said sorry and didn't offer any compensation. The rest was fine and breakfasts were quite good.

DONT BOOK HERE! No A/C!!! Just for 1 night and couldn’t sleep because of the heat, the room specifically said it had air conditioning. The air conditioner is behind the curtains so we have to leave them open, they know the Ac doesn’t work so they have ventilators in the room that do nothing for summer in Europe. Went to talk to the manager at 630am I plead for them to check on my room, told them my kids were sleeping naked because of the heat, and he responded “I sleep naked at my house too”. Don’t know how they have such a big score (probably friends and robots doing their reviews) , not friendly staff and nothing positive to say about it!!!!

We stayed at this hotel in Zurich during the summer and were extremely disappointed. The biggest issue: no air conditioning. With high temperatures and no ventilation, the rooms became unbearably hot, making it nearly impossible to sleep — especially with children. For a city like Zurich and the price we paid, we expected basic amenities like A/C, or at least a warning when booking. Unfortunately, we won’t be returning and do not recommend this hotel for families during summer.

This is an incredibly well run hotel. For the price, it had everything we needed and more. The location is great, the staff are very accommodating, and the facilities are well maintained. If you are looking for a no-muss no-fuss accommodation in Zürich, this is a place to stay.

A lovely hotel in a quiet neighborhood of Zurich. Our room was large and comfortable. The breakfast was very nicely done with a variety of options and a helpful staff. The location is close to public transportation, but most everything a visitor wants to see is within walking distance.

Pretty basic room. Some of the linens seemed a bit dirty, or at best, stained. TV channels were odd…one of few places where you had 98 channels and BBC Newsworld wasn’t one of them. It was also a bit noisy. Otherwise, I guess it met the basic requirements.,.but barely.

Our original room was very small and pokey with no fridge. We had booked 5nights so even tho alot of time would be spent outside the room, it was still not nice coming home to a room you couldn't swing a cat in. Margi was wonderful and found us another room at the same price which was so more spacious and came with a fridge...bonus!! Rooms are not airconditioned but in May we didn't really need it. We just opened the window to let in some fresh air when needed. Breakfast was pretty good, however, not cheap. There are a couple of cafes up to the left on the main road that have a lovely selection and much cheaper. The number 3 tram is also not far from hotel, up the left on the main road which takes you to central station and back. There are also little swiss chocolates provided on the receptionist's desk....yummo! Big shout out, and gold star, to Mafgie for all her help during our 5 day stay. She was a gem and always wore a smile!! Totally enjoyed our stay!

Very nice hotel and easy to get to Zurich city center from.

Perfect location, easy access to local tram network right outside hotel with local bakeries on the Main Street too. Spotless and spacious room (no 335). Loved the separate wet room for your shower. Comfortable room temperature which made for a pleasant sleep.

Even though this hotel does not look like much from the outside, they have a good thing going on the inside. The rooms are amazing. They are big and clean. The bathroom is one of the biggest bathrooms I have ever seen in a hotel. The offer a breakfast that is very good with lots of options. The location is right next to a metro stop making it easy to get around.

Great no frills place to stay. We had a family of 4 and stayed in a room that had a king bed and 2 twin beds. The room was very warm, cozy, clean and comfortable. The train is only 3 minute walk so it makes it very easy to get around Zürich without difficulty. You will need to buy your train tickets as the hotel stay does not include train passes like some hotels in Zurich. The room had a microwave and refrigerator. They also provided plates, cups and bowls. Read the information about the hotel when you arrive as there is a lot of great information. They also have a drop off laundry service that is only 12 CHF per load or you can pay to do laundry yourself. This is an amazing affordable service I wish I knew about earlier in our stay. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again.

Wonderfully comfortable and clean and staff were accomodating with being able to check in as early as possible and check out an hour later.

The hotel is perfectly located to close shopping and sightseeing area in the heart of Zurich. Large and very comfortable rooms with very nice bed linen and comfortable pillows ! Nice and very complet breakfast buffet. It is our favorite hotel in Zurich !

The rooms were very large and well set up.

The hotel was in a convenient area close to a tram line. It was clean and the staff were very nice. We were able to store our luggage on the day we arrived and the day we departed which was very convenient. It was not fancy but it provided everything we needed for our family to have a comfortable stay. I recommend this hotel.

Hotel was ideal for one night. The room was quite small esp the bathroom. The area was quiet and public transport was close. There are a few restaurants in the vicinity. The breakfast was great and a variety of food to choose from.

Hotel was fine except for incredibly small bathroom. You can barely get in and out. Also, no A/C so you have to open window. The traffic was so loud, sleeping was sporadic

It is an excellent hotel at a reasonable rate. The room we stayed in was small but very functional and comfortable with a lovely balcony. The breakfast was delicious with many healthy options. We especially love the neighborhood - close to many attractions while being quiet and quality.

Close to everything

It was fine. Just what we needed for one night in Zurich.

The hotel is in a quiet location with a couple of neighborhood places to eat close by. We utilized the individual private refrigerators located in their common kitchen. When we arrived, it was quickly discovered the room we had reserved with the balcony was too small for us. That was because we were at the beginning of a 6-week trip through 10 Eastern European countries with 8 pieces of luggage. Here is a well-deserved SHOUTOUT to Roger Giger the Hotel Director. He understood our dilemma and worked hard to see what he could do. We are very grateful to him for switching rooms with another guest, so the rest of our stay was in a much larger room close to the elevator. We felt his efforts went above and beyond what anyone might expect.

We enjoyed the cleanliness of the hotel and the AC Is a plus. The lady that assisted us for the buffet brunch was really nice and friendly. She helped us with our coffee and she went above and beyond in assisting us. I wish was able to get her name so I can thank her here. Anna on the front desk was also great. She is able to help us keep our luggages after check out so we can explore a bit more before leaving Zürich. Given the opportunity to come back and visit we will stay here again.

Excellent hotel within walking distance to downtown Zurich and street restaurants in the LImmatquai area. Breakfast is available at a lower price than the hotel within 50 meters, walking to the left of the main road, just in the corner. If tired or in a rush you can use the tram #3 that stops in front of the hotel both ways, just 3 stops to the main station/downtown. Price is 2.80 Euros per person. The rooms were clean and tidy every day and good size, no a/c, but able to open window. Private bathrooms updated. Magi was excellent responding to queries before the trip and during our stay. There is a good coffee, water and orange juice available in the lobby. Only Euros are used in Zurich, do not bring USD or other currencies. I recommend a visit to the University to access for free the back terrace (polyterrasse) for the best view of the city, including the student's coffee shop and bar. Use Tram #10 from the main station uphill. Another view of the city is reachable by walking from the downtown towards the Limmat river at the St. Peter church, Alstadt (old town).

Exceptional value for location and cleanliness. The only thing is that the single beds are very narrow and the rooms are big enough to accommodate a wider size.

Perfectly adequate budget hotel. Facilities were clean and basic. Mini fridge was an unexpected plus. We stayed at the peak of summer when the temperature was in the 90s. The Eco friendly AC could not keep up. The room was maybe 78 by 10-11pm. The breakfast had a limited, but fresh and tasty selection with friendly staff and top notch coffee. Good location 15-20 minutes walk to the center of town.

The hotel facilities and staff were excellent. However, there were only 4 parking spaces for guests. They provided a blue zone placard for a fee and it is near impossible to find parking anywhere near the hotel. It is located in a nice residential area (Hottingen).

First time in Switzerland and this was a great hotel to start things off. Started with a very nice staff member at the check in desk. Then the room was very clean and comfortable. Close to everything.

Warm friendly and efficient check in, room very spacious and clean with all the facilities you may require. Good air conditioner and shower facilities also. Walk to the old town in a little over 10 minutes, which offers lots of dining / drinking options. Would highly recommend for ease to city centre.

This hotel was much better than I expected! A great quiet location right by the tram stop, also recommend visiting the wine bar across the street - amazing! The room was basic but SUCH a comfortable bed, elite pillows, great shower and good aircon! The staff were fabulous, even helping with printing some documents for me. Thank you for a great stay!

The hotel was comfortable. Breakfast was ok. We could take the tram to the train station as it was 4-5 stops away.

There was a small problem with my room, but it was dealt with very quickly in the nicest possible way, for this reason I'm happy to rate this hotel highly. I was pleased with reception staff, the breakfast was good as well: big selection of cold platters and a warm cooked breakfast up until the end of the service hours. However, I found liquid radiators in the room slightly noisy when they were warming up.

The hotel was lovely, friendly staff and quiet! Bed was very comfortable, plenty of hot water and english channels on the TV! I didn’t have breakfast so cannot comment on that but would definitely stay again.Easy 4 stop commute to the Bahnhof.Very good value for money

This hotel is owned by a Foundation started by Catholic nuns. It has an extremely pleasant, caring, culture. Staff are extremely pleasant, even by the high standards of Switzerland. Rooms are small but well appointed in rather tight space. I recommend!

Building is old. No elevator to access for going upstairs at all. You can hear the noice from hall way, as it is very tight and narrow. Don’t expect it as a hotel or hostel. It’s more like an old building apartment.

The front desk staff were absolutely wonderful. The room was lovely and very clean.

Appreciated easy parking on site. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was clean, but was on a floor with a large amount of construction in the building. Did not cause much of an issue except navigating elevators and stairs with construction materials. Overall clean and in a safe area with breakfast included which was great. Was a bit further from Old town than we would have preferred, but a good place to stopover for a night.

Very convenient access from railway station. The number 3 tram is your friend and only 5 mins travel from station to hotel. Clean. Good shower. Good value. Friendly.

Somehow my booking date was wrong, 2 months earlier. Realized it two days later and trying to get it fixed. I was willing to pay extra to get date corrected. This hotel doesn’t give any flexibility for assistance. Made me to pay full price with me being at the other end of world. Extremely disappointed and therefore I cancelled 8 night books with hotels.com. May never use it again

Unexpectedly good service through the provision of kitchenette facilities that was very handy for the family snacks. More vegan / vegetarian options in breakfast could be introduced. Location is good and so is the hotel’s room provisions.

This place was in a good location with walking proximity to old town Zürich and Train Station HP. Service was great. Allowed us to check in early at 10:30 am when we arrived! Restaurant a few doors down and also a wonderful pastry/ breakfast lunch place one block up!
