Love the building location and historical atmosphere. Staff were lovely, and the food was amazing.
The room was too small, and so was the bathroom. The heat pump unit leaked water down the wall, causing the carpet to become very wet on one side of the room. This issue was brought up to the staff when we first arrived, but nothing was done to fix it or offer us another room. However, we do look forward to staying at Shadow Lawn in the future as we enjoy the historic feel and service provided. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy this beautiful location.
Tout. La gentille et le sourire de tous
Rien du tout
Le service impeccable
Lovely property in a great location.
The inn is a lovely old mansion beautifully restored. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms very quiet. The breakfast was great. We would definitely stay at this property again.
Nothing
Lovely old Inn, well maintained. Most of staff was informative. I appreciated having a ground floor room as requested. Breakfast was a cold serving but presented well and better than expected.
Location made it difficult to find restaurants and directions from young receptionist was confusing, however it is a small community with limited options.
Wonderful location, a picturesque setting excellent restaurant on the premises. A beautiful breakfast was included
Friendly staff Great location Beautiful Inn with character. Rooms are well appointed.
Beautiful home. Wonderfully restored and maintained. Plenty of parking. Great friendly staff. Breakfast was delicious and fun.
I would have liked to have a small refrigerator in the room. There was enough space for it. Would be nice to keep drinks, cheese, etc cold in the room.
Lack of safety bars in shower
Quiet, clean room. Comfortable large bed. Delicious breakfast. Friendly staff.
Drain in the shower was slow to drain which meant I was standing in quite a bit of water during the shower.
Beautiful room which celebrated the historic aspect of the Inn. Breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented served in an elegant dining room
A fridge in the room would have been a bonus
Fabulous ! Perfect location
Nothing
Excellent breakfast. Great location.
The staff were great Joanne, who greeted us, Coleen who served us, and Martin who helped us were 1st class. The old house is stately. We would recommend this place.
No fan in the the bathroom, we had to open the window to let the moisture out.
Lovely and comfy. Very clean.
Character. Great restaurant. Wonderful staff.
Nothing.
Everything Excellent
Très bien
Joanne and Chef are exceptional!
everything about this place was divine. the property is heavenly, the breakfast was beyond lovely! services and owners were wonderful and perfect. I wish I lived here LOLI would stay here again in a heartbeat. I highly recommend. LOVED LOVE LOVED it !!! Sylvia
Lovely inn in quiet location, Tracy and Martin are delightful hosts. . We really enjoyed the ambiance and the on site restaurant and would fully recommend it.
Very hospitable !
Was good
The breakfast was absolutely delicious. The beds were incredibly comfortable and the room and bathroom were large and well-appointed. Staff were friendly and down-to-earth. I recommend this place highly!
Would have been better if there was an elevator, but that is not to be expected in a home like this.
We had a wonderful relaxing stay. The property was beautiful, the room was very clean and comfortable and the host was really friendly. It was a great experience.
We came for a long weekend / wedding. Inn is very quaint, in a very beautiful old house with a very historical architecture, decorated with good taste, convenient location close to the town centre. Although our experience was good overall, we disliked the breakfast (lack of choice) and our room was a bit outdated (no ventilation in the bathroom and bed frame was very creaky). Also, soundproofing is poor - we could hear other guests in their rooms and people walking in the hallway. Overall nice experience, perhaps a little expensive for the price. Did not eat lunch/supper at restaurant so cannot give an opinion on that side of the inn.
Loved the breakfast. The presentation was great! The Inn was old and beautiful. I'd stay again.
Lovely staff and great food
Loved the breakfast. Very friendly staff. Lovely area to walk around.
Our room was very spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was more simple than we expected but yummy.
Heritage, staff, bed
Bathroom was antiquated
Shadow Lawn Inn is an absolute gem—a beautifully restored historic house that exudes charm and warmth. From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed by the lovely owners and staff, who go out of their way to make your stay special. The inn’s restaurant is a highlight, serving delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner with an impressive attention to detail. Every dish is thoughtfully prepared, making dining here a real treat. The rooms and common areas retain the character of the old house while offering modern comforts, making it a perfect mix of history and elegance. Whether you’re visiting for a relaxing getaway or a special occasion, Shadow Lawn Inn is a fantastic choice. Highly recommended!
The bathroom was a little cold
My first visit to the Shadow Lawn was in 1986 and was exceptional in terms of comfort and service. My second visit last year exceeded that experience - the new owners have obviously committed to the tradition of excellence that is the trademark of the Shadow Lawn. Room was large, comfortable, well appointed, and quiet. The addition of a renovated restaurant increased the appeal of the stay. Breakfasts are delicious, and the tasting menu - taste of the maritime - offered in the evening was well worth the price. The hosts are attentive without being intrusive. This is our "go to" place to stay when in Saint John. You will not be disappointed.
It is a stunning location and staff was so friendly and accommodating.
The bathrooms was a bit chilly but to be expected with the age of the property. It would be nice to add a coffee machine in the room for evenings and early mornings.
Nice to spend a night in such a beautiful historic house. Staff was amazing, food was great and served in a charming dining room well decorated for the Holiday season. The owners were very attentive to our requests even if they were super busy with a group dinner in one of the dining room.
As many old houses, there was a bit of a draft (cold Winter day) coming from the old windows in our bedroom facing the front. Fortunately, we cranked up the heat but the bathroom floor and temperature stayed cold. Otherwise, it was a wonderful room and all the rest was very satisfying.
The most comfortable bed I ever slept in. Super nice people.
Loved the mix of modern and traditional styling
excellent stay , great breakfast
The ambiance, cleanliness and great service.
Nothing. It was wonderful.
The Shadow Lawn Inn was exquisite! We could not have been happier with our accommodations and the restaurant was beautiful and the food just delicious. The property is a beautiful vintage Victorian Home. If you are visiting Saint John NB this is the perfect quiet place to stay and it is only a 15 minute drive to the downtown. We would most definitely recommend the Shadow Lawn Inn. Thank you for a beautiful experience!
It is such a beautiful old property. Well-maintained and tastefully decorated.
The WiFi needs improving. And the bathtub was not useable because it did not have a plug.
We spent one night at this inn. Absolutely lovely: the people, the place, the food! Thank you!
restaurant and breakfast were great as well as staff beautiful old mansion
Great staff! Property is very well operated and extremely neat!
Breakfast could have been a little more substantial. But we were very well received.
We could not have asked for a more perfect place to provide us with a much needed post-wedding rest & relaxation getaway. Beautiful accomodations and staff. We will most certainly stay with them again.
We stayed three nights at the Inn. The food at the restaurant for dinner was simply superb. We had the wine paired 5-course meal as part of the stay and dine package on one night and it was a top notch meal. The breakfast each morning was elegant and very enjoyable. It was plated and sufficient. The inn itself could do with some refreshing. But on the whole we thought it was a very good experience.
Close to St John and ferry from Nova Scotia Restaurant on site Staff were friendly and helpful Breakfast was included - croissants were excellent
The bedroom window was painted shut, the air cooling/heating system was noisy and antiquated. The bathroom windows opened inwards but were dirty on the outside The plumbing was antiquated, noisy horrible macerating toilet system, water in the basin either off or full blast No coffee or tea making facilities in the bedroom The background musak at breakfast - ugh! The restaurant positions itself as fine dining. It's good but not that good.
Owners were very friendly. They do serve a big dinner here sit down but you need to make reservations ahead of time. It is a popular restaurant in the area.
It is a bit remote. You have to drive into town.
Extremely beautiful, comfortable and with excellent staff and owner. The 5 course discovery Dinner was amazing!
My wife and I could not have been happier with the services provided by Martin St Denis and his staff at the Shadow Lawn Inn. Wedding planning, food, rooms and all other services such as lining up a pianist, decor, etc. Martin was incredible. Their property was extremely well kept and so were the rooms, dining area and bar room. All of our guests were impressed with each course of the meal. Staff worked efficiently and were very accommodating during our speeches, toasts, etc. We were able to host a wedding rehearsal and there were multiple locations on the property to host the ceremony, for a very reasonable fee. Many last minute changes were made, all were fulfilled. There is not a single thing that I can say Shadow Lawn was not able to provide. My family has been having weddings at this location for generations and it’s great that Martin and his staff are continuing this tradition in the classy fashion which the property has built its reputation on. Amazing. Thanks Martin! Matthew & Ainsley
A lovely old inn with attentive management and a great restaurant
Amazing staff, and beautiful inn
Nil
Beautiful property, lovely room and super comfortable beds! Staff were helpful and pleasant, and breakfast was delicious! We were very impressed with our stay and would definitely stay again!!
It is a well maintained old building ...but is is an old building and its hard to compete with modern heating (bedroom comfy/bathroom very cold). Bed is soo comfortable as well. It is entirely unique however in the charm, intimate interaction and beautiful dining area (i could not take advantage of this visit but hope to when I return) To be honest, it was the event entertainment (Theresa Malenfant! excellent always) that drew me there...but the overall experience will bring me back.
The dedicated respect for the heritage of the building ongoing.
I can’t think of a thing I didn’t like.
Breakfast was great, and beautifully presented.
Closeness, ease, coziness
Breakfast was outstanding!
The breakfast, and the bed.
Toilet paper, and low toilet!
It was a really nice place to stay. The Staff was efficient and courteous. The room was very spacious. We arrived when they were hosting a private function and that was confusing but the staff member took care of us very quickly and showed us to our room. She promised it would be quiet after they left and by the time we came back from our dinner in town, it was much better.
Shadow Lawn inn is more concerned with its restaurant than its B and B guests. Carpets are threadbare, sheets discoloured, no greeting on arrival. Never saw the owners. Given a small pot of yogurt with a cold croissant for breakfast each day. My husband got the end of a piece of Brie - no choice of anything. The place was cold and deserted like the owners have run out of money? We chose an inn for what we hoped would be its its personal touches and local knowledge but we saw no one. It was as impersonal as a large corporate hotel without the conveniences or standards they would offer. What a strange place. We travelled from the Uk and spent 17 days in the East coast of Canada and this establishment was the only disappointment. We checked out a day early - we left a note for the owner (who could not be found) but she never contacted us. We lost the money for that night but that’s how desperate we were to get out of there! You get the feeling that B and B guests are an inconvenience and their restaurant guests are their priority. There was certainly no evidence of fine dining in the cold meagre offering we received.
Incredible restaurant with delicious food
The inn was in a great location, and very pretty. The gardens were beautiful.
I loved the comfort of the facilities and the staff was exceptionally friendly and informative. It was especially nice to have a restaurant on the premises.
The night light was a great idea but it wasn't working. Lots of stairs, fortunately, I was able to maneuver the fine but it would limit someone with a handicap.
We loved staying here. Breakfast was great and had great presentation.
Friendly welcoming staff
Very weak internet connection in the room.
Lovely house and grounds, wonderful staff.
It is an old mansion, quite nicely remodeled but no lobby area to sit and read - except outside ( problematic if it’s rainy). The room was quite small - so we needed an additional place to sit to be able to read…
Breakfast was awesome. Staff was great.
Nothing
Excellent location
At these prices, they should have 2-ply toilet paper. And the mattress was too soft. Bathroom was tiny.
Great venue. The woodwork in the house is amazing. Highly recommended
Huge room with two double beds. Bathroom the size of a coliseum. Rothesay is a lovely alternative to downtown Saint John and only 15-20 minutes into town. The Inn is lovely and quiet and would be $1000 a night in a large city.
Very nice place to stay in the area. Rooms are very comfortable.
Nothing
It was a historical building and interesting. No elevators, but we specifically picked this location and paid extra because we wanted a jacuzzi tub. After checking in and being shown to our room, we were told the jets did not work. I didn't believe it just happened that day, and even if it had, they should have contacted me and/or offered a discount. Instead they waited until we were in the room and sprang it on us. The room was still beautiful. Then we were told there was no room for us to eat dinner on the premises, that we should have made a reservation in advance. Would've been nice to know that as well. Instead we were told there was a pub down the street so we went there. The pub's food was awesome, especially homemade desserts! 😋 Kask and Kettle Irish Gastropub. Still, staff was lovely at the hotel, and gracious. Just the rest was disappointing.
This is a beautiful inn. Our room was lovely and the bed was super comfortable. The staff was very attentive. Breakfast was excellent. The restaurant is wonderful as well.
The food, staff and relaxed vibe.
Beautiful home and area. The restaurant was fantastic. The beds were the most comfortable I've experienced in travelling. The staff work in the restaurant and are generous and kind.
I had the last room, the two-bed suite. The room was plain compared to the other historically decorated rooms. After seeing what the other rooms looked like, it was a little disappointing, but not really a big deal.
Loved it
Overall. Loved everything about the location and services.
With regards to breakfast, I personally would have preferred to have an option for my dietary needs. I'm keto. I do not eat breads or fruits or sugar. So, perhaps an extra egg or another slice of cheese would have been nice.
Breakfast was very good. Staff was friendly and very helpful. Easy to get from place to place in the area and staff offered suggestions of places to visit. Restaurant dinner was outstanding !!
