I loved the rainforest retreat. I stayed in Hideway. The nature of the rainforest is that it's damp. However, my room had a good heater and a dehumidifier which made ot very comfortable. I had a good toilet and shower, a kettle, hob, fridge and crockery and cutlery. I even had wifi!! The double bed was really comfortable. There was also a big comfy armchair which could tirn into a single bed. It was so lovely to sleep deep in the forest with the sound of the birds and the sea. I would love to come back one day

Great place for a short stay! Since we were staying in the off season, we got lucky enough to be the only guests and had the whole main building for ourselves. All facilities are clean enough, kitchen has all the basics to cook and the bed was comfortable. Facilities are not new and maybe need some upgrading, but nothing major really, especially keeping in mind the very affordable price, so we have really enjoyed our stay here, thanks!

Die Rezeption war weder Telefonisch verfügbar noch vor Ort anwesend. Die anderen Gäste waren lange wach und laut. Sehr hellhöriges Haus.

Super Lage, hübsches Haus mit Dorm

Die Sauberkeit ließ zu wünschen übrig (schwarze Haare in der Dusche bei nur blonden Bewohnern?!), die Küche war sehr benutzt. Leider ist auch die Konstruktion nicht im Sinne eines Hostels: Der Aufenthaltsraum ist ohne Abtrennung neben dem Schlafbereich. Wenn also jemand ein Billardturnier austrägt, kann niemand schlafen.

Honestly the staff was barely present, the heating was barely working and the flat was full of mold.

I was hosted in a house with kitchen, living room, lounge. The room was quite large and there were two shared toilets and two showers. Nice and quiet place surrounded by the woods.

We booked a specific room we had a previous time, it was confirmed online that we had that room, then were told it was not available when we arrived.

Very slow internet, One small heater was not enough and it was very cold over the night, Shower drain was partially blocked, The shower head should be replaced as it did not work well. Dirty towels after previous guests were left in our room.

Really quirky place, we stayed in the off season so only us and 1 other couple and it was lovely and peaceful. Great location close to the pancake rocks and a well equipped kitchen etc.

Beautiful location

Tūī Room had a very strong mould smell and with having respiratory issues it wasn’t great. I gather it’s from being set amongst bush and not ventilated enough. I couldn’t have done more than 1 night here due to room.

La stanza e la struttura non erano quelle descritte nelle foto. Quella delle foto era una struttura moderna con bagno nuovo e un salotto comune con cucina. Nella realtà è una struttura datata e in po' fatiscente. La stanza era sporca ed ho trovato delle lenti a contatto per terra. Una sola doccia era disponibile e l'altra era fuori uso. Il bagno, anche quello diverso dalle foto, perdeva acqua tutta la notte. La stanza era molto fredda.

A good location, there is a quiet beach nearby, and it is far enough away that it is very quiet - if you have one of the private rooms, anyway. Good pool of cooking utilities. Has a nice atmosphere.

Found dead insects and little stones in my room. It was also right next to/ above the washing machine facilities, which were loud. It was a hot day when I was there, and I wanted to have my windows open for some fresh air, but then mosquitoes would come in and bite me; pulling the curtains didn't help much, as they didn't fit properly. Please put some bug screens in there so I can open the windows without becoming a buffet. Air conditioning is promised, but the only one seems to be in the main living area, where the doors are always left open... and it was unplugged. The stairs were creaky, which kept me up during the night as people moved around, and I felt bad having to use them when I left in the morning.

Beautiful setting in the rain forest yet just off the highway and within walking distance to the beach. We originally booked the Hideaway Cottage which was located down a path through the rain forest from the office. There was a parking lot further down the driveway where the walk to the cottage would be closer. The day of our arrival we texted the property to ask what the cooking facilities were like in our unit, as we wanted to cook a proper meal rather than eat out. The owner responded quickly telling us he'd upgraded us to the Tiro Moana cabin that had a kitchen with equipment to cook, and suggested a grocery store for us to purchase our food. We had a lovely relaxing evening sipping wine on the balcony, enjoying the view of the trees and the ocean in the distance and the sounds of the Kiwi birds strutting about below.

I couldn't fault the Te Nikau Retreat

Good location as near to several sites worth visiting. Nestled within a rainforest which was really attractive.

Exceptionally poor cleanliness. We stayed for 3 days & never witness any staff cleaning neither private rooms nor facilities. All domestic duties performed by volunteers that are remunerated with free accomodation. This does not work as the place is dirty & in desperate need of a thorough clean. Communal areas were never cleaned over the 3 days of our stay, including the kitchen! It is more suited for back-packers, but they would find it dirty too!! It is exceptionally poor value-for-money. Other cottages may have been different, but the Ruru Lodge Double Room with Privater Bathroom was a big mistake for us and did not match the reviews we read from previous guests.

Het dak was lek terwijl het stormde, dus toen midden in de nacht mijn buurman opeens met pannen naast mijn bed stond keek ik wel even raar op.

I was staying in a shared accommodation and the facilities were really unclean, the shower was dirty and during the evening there was a leak from the roof!

The location is 100/10. I recommend this place. I would stay again.

The room was so stinky! Super musty smell, seemed to be bugs in the room, the bed linen could do with an update. Beware if driveway to the carpark! The hill up needs repairs too steep for smaller vehicles, will spin out.

Not very soundproof, you can hear every creak from the dorm room above, also the open concept made me feel like I was disturbing everyone when I had to go to the bathroom at night. Bathroom stalls offer little privacy with the gap to the floor. Only two toilets for the amount of people seemed too little. They seem to only change the linen but not the duvet. Mine was covered in what looked like jizz. I arrived after office hours and stayed for only one night so I didn't complain, but it's a no go for me and I would not stay there again.

A convenient room in Ruru building directly opposite office. The owner James helped us with luggage up the stairs. Bed comfortable and surroundings great. James accepted the place needs a lot of work to bring it up to scratch. Adventurous trail down to the beach especially in the dark.

Quite a run down feel to our room and the building in general and needs a total refurb. James acknowledges this and is working towards it gradually. Facilities in the room were quite basic.

Was a bit difficult to close my door (wood warped), but no big deal. Everything was great!

Great location, close to the pancake rocks. The cottage had sea views from the balcony, a full kitchen, separate living room, a comfortable bed.

The shower water pressure is very low.

Short walk to the beach and short drive to Punakaiki rocks. Was comfortable and more like a cottage than a motel unit. Comfy sofas.

Bed had no support - really needs to be replaced ! Very expensive per night (to be fair it was 2 rooms)

Nothing. It was just a house. Old and not maintained. No TV. Cleaning was questionable receptionist was nice and help full. Thanks for arranging cake.

Our room was full of cobwebs.

The accommodation itself is quite run down. Many things felt old and worn: the curtains were outdated, the pillows smelled musty and the ceiling in our room was slightly dented with visible cracks in one spot, spider webs everywhere. In the morning we also noticed small maggots on the windowsill when we opened the curtains. Also possibly possums or other animals in the ceiling, so no sleep or very bad sleep.

The actual was very different from the advertising. Bad access on shingle tracks. Rooms accessed at a distance from car access. Not suitable for fit retired people. May suit energetic back Packers.

It was noisy to hear the other guests moving around & cooking etc. There was a mouse in the ceiling running around all night. The carpet in our room was filthy. There was cobwebs hanging from the light fittings in the bedroom, the windows & curtains & bathrooms. The bathrooms were dirty. It was very run down & overpriced for what it was.

I had no issues, the property has a variety of accommodation , not fancy, if you want luxury and amenities then it isn't for you, but a nice place to stay and enjoy the area it's a good choice

לא מתאים למשפחות!!! לחדר היה ריח חזק מאוד של עובש. לא הרגיש נקי בכלל. החדר לא היה מאורגן עבורנו והיינו צריכים לסדר מיטת ספה באופן עצמאי. התיאור והתמונות בבוקינג הטעו אותנו - המטבח וחלל המגורים הינו משותף.

Perfect little spot on the west coast.

Quiet, secluded, in a natural setting with a trail down to the beach.

First of all, major bonus points for allowing our dog to stay with us. Travelling with a four-legged friend can sometimes feel like applying for a visa, so this was hugely appreciated. The retreat is set right in the middle of the lush West Coast bush, which makes it feel like you’re living inside a nature documentary. Birds everywhere, beautiful greenery, and that peaceful “you’re definitely not in the city anymore” feeling. The beach is only a very short walk away, which sounded fantastic… until we discovered dogs aren’t allowed there. Our dog was probably the most disappointed member of the group. The staff were friendly and welcoming, which always makes a stay more enjoyable. Our self-contained hut was quite basic, but honestly that’s part of the charm. Considering the price and the incredible surroundings, it felt completely fair for what you get. You’re basically paying to sleep in the middle of beautiful West Coast bush – and that’s a pretty great deal.

Keeping the very reasonable price in mind (very hard to find these days), the stay was great overall. But if I had to be a bit picky, there were a few small things that could be improved. The shower pressure was super low, which made rinsing off after a day outdoors take a little longer than expected. There was also a bit of mould around the toilet basin — although considering the West Coast probably gets more rain than sunshine, the mould might just be trying its best to feel at home too. The lighting in the hut was quite limited, and unfortunately my reading light had given up on life, which my book was not thrilled about. The dishes could also have been a bit cleaner, as a few still showed signs of previous tenants’ cooking adventures. None of these things were major issues considering the affordability and the beautiful bush setting, but fixing them would definitely make the stay even better.
