Lovely grounds
Nothing
Green ceiling Lamp was on all night.
Location and grounds
Beds facilities rooms and very noisy fire doors slammed all night
Ilam Hall was amazing, from the house and grounds to the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Breakfasts were lovely with plenty of choice and enough to keep you full while out walking in this beautiful area. The rooms were lovely and clean and the beds were lovely and comfy- some reviews had said the mattresses were thin (which they were compared to house mattresses) but they were very dense and comfortable. The shower in my room was excellent. I cant think of anything negative to say. I would happily stay here again.
WIFI was poor - but that meant we had a real break from phone calls and messages.
Nice personnel but that’s about it
I don’t know who has given it 4 stars! I wouldn’t give it 1 star! The property is so dated, pieces of ceiling paint falling off the ceiling, the rooms are so tiny, you have to keep the windows open at night otherwise terrible condensation and moisture in the room. Getting to the property is a nightmare as well. I’ve lost satellite signals on both phones before reaching the property - there is basically no phone connection there! Had to ask random couple on the street how to get there, there are no clear signs, took me a while driving around to find the place! The property so portly insulated - woke up at night from people talking loud in the hallway. Seriously, you get a feeling you don’t want to touch anything in that place - everything is so old, so badly painted over. Just gives you disgusting feeling. Didn’t dare using the shower… Not coming back. 4 stars is a joke, I’ve been around the world and this is zero stars. I appreciate it’s a heritage site but come on…
Just wifi was restricted in certain areas of the building but thats the only issue. Very nice place.
B
Good location, food was great.
Nothing much, just walking towards and in the room 106 , there’s creaking floorboards. But I didn’t really find a problem with that
Food was nice and location spectacular
We were given a disabled bathroom and water from shower went everywhere on floor so that was awful until they gave me some towels.
Family room, great location and facilities good. Would stay again. Friendly staff and tasty food. Activities for the kids were a bonus.
The wet room was a bit hard to dry, so the kids kept getting their socks and trousers wet.
For a YHA is was excellent, the room was as described, clean and comfortable the staff were excellent, food was superb and the grounds were fantastic. this place was beautiful in an idyllic location.
Nothing
Amazing location and historical property
Excellent location and for nearby hiking and trails with beautiful scenery
Food in restaurant not as expected. Not bad though, but it could be better.
An absolute retreat , especially spending the day & the following day at Alton Towers
Soooo relaxed , everything we needed & more We loved it
The building, the grounds, the location was stunning. Reception staff really polite, professional and helpful.
My issues were with other guests not the accommodation so not worth mentioning.
Variety of communal spaces. Good, reasonably priced food. Historic charm. Friendly and helpful staff. Charging points and lighting for each bed. Great location for first time visitor to Peak District. Dovedale is a must explore.
The bedroom suffered in the heat. Being unable to open the historic windows in any meaningful way meant the powerful fan supplied could only recycle warm air.
Everything about Ilam and the Hall. So baking hot in the shared room as closed up all day and fan on only when trying to sleep. Difficult I know in such very hot weather.
Very little sleep.
The location and the building is amazing
Lack of wi fi to rooms was difficult.
The location was beautiful! It was such a lovely experience! Plus the breakfast was good, the beds comfortable and the general cleanliness was good.
I stayed during the heatwave and unfortunately the room was uncomfortably hot, with just one little fan to share. Plus the hall outside our room smelt like weed and in the heat, this smell did not help.
Beautiful scenery, clean and comfy beds, excellent value tasty continental breakfast, friendly staff, great base for walks.
Lack of additional shower / toilet facilities, probably difficult to fit these in to be fair! 6 women in one room was definitely cosy! The room was very warm and the window only opened very slightly
Great external presence but with modern facilities inside. Lounge, games room, dining room plus self- catering kitchen. Our room was fine, comfortable beds and en suite though that was a little cramped. The evening meals and breakfast were surprisingly excellent
Nothing but the view
Hi I am a disabled person who book 2 rooms with booking .com at ( YHA ) it is advertised as 4 star but it’s nothing like a 4 star hotel in fact it is not even a star because the rooms are disgusting, filthy I don’t know how people can stay with families as the bedding has spiders as well as other bugs and I am not very happy as I had to book another hotel due to all the problems and when I asked the reception to give me a refund they refused also I was given one family room and one shared room when I booked 2 private rooms so overall very poor and will never come or recommend to any one as it’s messed my room and gave me stress when I was meant to have a good holiday instead rubbish and I have proof of everything as I have documented everything and I will be making a complaint because I am a disabled person and been given misleading advertisement.
The building, grounds and location are beautiful
Amazing location, beautiful place stunning views beautiful
Good facilities. Clean. Friendly staff. Overall good atmosphere
Hard bed
Amazing location and grounds. Clean bedrooms and comfortable.
Some staff were not friendly. The corridor to the self catering kitchen stank of damp. The kitchen facilities were closed in, run down and uncomfortable. The eating area for self catering was bleak, dark and cramped. Smelt awful of damp from the laundry room. Only one toilet on ground floor, slow check in, no table tennis as advertised. People were not particularly friendly and paying for parking was unnecessary.
We have stayed here a few times when at Alton towers. It’s good value for money and nice and close to the resort. Staff are all amazingly friendly and helpful as they have been every stay .
Unfortunately the room we were in 301 was on the stair well so we had constant noise the full night with people in the hall, banging doors, banging cases up and down the stairs, the room shaking every time the fire door at the bottom was slammed shut. We normally like here but if this had been our first time here we wouldn’t have gone back. The room was the smallest we have been in, we paid extra for the en-suite as I was traveling with my kids but not sure it’s worth the extra money judging by this room. Shower leaked over the full floor and you have to crouch down to get your head under the shower. Just a disappointing stay. We will come back but not in this room and think if the next time was the same would then find a different place to stay in future. Almost the same price as the pods at Alton towers so might be time to go back to them 😥
The building is lovely, the location is wonderful
The windows in the room where small and now in England the summer's are hotter than ever, the hostel needs adapt the rooms yo the hot weather
Beautiful building and nature that can leave you speechless
Walking by this historic place and nearby hiking areas make loose time control and re-discover nature. Restaurant and caffe provide food supply nearly all day. The room was basic but cannot fault everyone clean bedding comfortably
Location
Nothing
Beautifully maintained old stately home with budget accommodation
It would have been great to pay for the use of towels
Very clean and comfortable, good facilities, good food options
WiFi was terrible and obviously, due to the location, there was no phone signal. I was informed at check in that cooked options were included in the continental breakfast. Despite finding this odd, I booked this option. On Sunday we received cooked options but were denied this on the Monday. Spoke to the kitchen manager who said cooked options were not included. My daughter is autistic and will only eat certain foods so she ended up with toast as the only possible option.
The location was great
The facilities are horrible. You have to pay for literally everything. You have to rent towels ,there are no soap shampoo in the bathroom, rooms are even not clean properly. Very horrible experience
A gorgeous place, in a beautiful location, excellent staff and breakfast, the price and quality are in line
Absolutely beautiful building, grounds and surrounding countryside. The staff were immensely helpful and kind and went out of their way to accommodate us. Couldn't rate it higher. We want to come back for a longer stay.
Nothing negative to report here.
This place is stunning. And ALL the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The family room we booked was great. Good private bathroom facilities. Food was great. 15 min drive to alton towers which was great. The breakfast was fab! Well worth the money. Set us all up for the day ahead.
The mattress were very thin. But I have multiple medical conditions so this is always an issue for me. But for 1 night it was do able. There was zero phone signal on O2 and the included WiFi was spotty. The family rooms were up 2 flights of stairs which wasn't mentioned and difficult due to my mobility issues, not good for disabled guests.
Location is great
The optional for breakfast was great, the place has nice scenery and was well priced
Lots of space. Excellent breakfast. Comfortable lounges.
I liked the location and the property
The room was quite small and one of the bath facilities was out of order, making all 7 of us cramp for the only other shower room that was available
Very peaceful and beautiful. Great value for money and super friendly staff.
The school group ate all the breakfast items leaving little behind for us!
Beautiful environs
Fantastic location, lovely staff, good lounge spaces.
Not enough toilets. The school children running around upstairs made the lounge below less relaxing!
Love it here, been many times.
Nothing!
Perfect
We were pleasently surprised by this accomodation. The prce was super reasonable for teh quality of the stay/grounds/srvice and facilities.
The breakfast was nice, it may have been better to have a choice of eggs (such a small thing)
Lovely building and surrounding areas the gardens where amazing and staff were very friendly and helpful 😀
I love to have a stay at YHA Ilam Hall at least once a year, to me it's got so much going for it. The location and facilities are outstanding at this price I cannot think of anywhere better. Spring and Autumn are really good times to go but it's okay to come at any time of the year.
Lack of internet connection and TV but maybe that's a good thing.
Beautiful area, stunning views. Very comfortable bed, nice staff members.
I found it quite expensive, as everywhere right now, to buy a cup of coffee or glass of wine.
Beautiful location and building
The location, the views, the cheap price.
The WiFi signal not reaching the rooms and being temperamental.
Amazing place to stay. I would highly recommend this place, great building, great surroundings would suggest spending time walking around nearby , lovely lady on reception.
Can’t complain about anything for the price we paid .
The staff are so friendly and easy to communicate with!
There was a large group booking who were very rude unfortunately though i understand that isn’t entirely within the YHAs control.
Staff very professional and friendly. Food good. Location lovely Only criticism was the room soundproofing could hear next door conversation. Noise from people in corridor and doors slamming shut.. maybe the door closers are too harsh or not harsh enough.
Soundproofing in the rooms
The grandeur of the property with bargain rooms that are always clean .

Beautiful views very clean
Beautiful setting, simply stunning!!
Nothing it was a lovely stay.
Beds were okay
The staff were so rude and I had no idea I needed ID to stay and was treated like a criminal with my children.
Overall experience from booking to stay was quite easy and smooth, liked the way they managed everything in the middle of no where..quite relax environment and beautiful view Alton tower is just 15 minutes away😊
If there is internet and TV in the room that will be cherry on the top.. Would also appreciate if they make some kids play area outside. Also add some more indoor games
Excellent price. Comfortable accommodation. Friendly staff. Excellent location. Family friendly
I arrived when it was dark and it was hard to find the front door as it was pitch black outside. Some night lights by the front door would have helped.
Magnifique endroit, très calme et spacieux. On reviendra pour un plus long séjour !
The Location is fantastic
The property is really big and good facilities it is well located and with plenty path and activities for kids and families
Beautiful setting and superb value for money. Our three teenage children especially loved the chance to meet other guests over a game of pool, table tennis or chess in one of the common lounges.
The room was very basic but for the incredible price we really cannot complain!
The wifi was not working and connecting in some areas and as there were no mobile network, having better wifi facility would have help a lot.
Great location, beautiful building
Uncomfortable bed
Absolutely stunning location and building. Great facilities, very clean and good food available.
The water supply to the private bathrooms very noisy. Zero phone signal and WiFi limited to lounges.
200 year old building. Location.,friendly staff
Very warm in self catering seating area.
The area is beautiful and the room was an adequate size but the heating wasn't working and they put 2 portable radiators in but was still really cold Food from the kitchen was good and the activities in the games room were good although they need some more board games
The heating not working so room was cold and the common areas were probably too hot
Amazing value, stunning area, and really great facilities. The room was accessible, beds comfortable, and everything was really clean. There was storage in the room, and plenty of outlets for charging!
Wifi unfortunately didn't reach our room, which was the furthest from the facilities. The weather was pretty rough, and we did have to go outside to get to the kitchen area.
Very good customer service
None
Our room wouldn't lock and were unable to get hold of any staff so had to spend the night in an unsecured room with strange men lingering around all night
Good location
My stay was a mixed experience overall. The room itself was clean and comfortable, and the location is very good, which I really appreciated. However, I had some issues during check-in at night that left me unsatisfied, as the process didn’t go smoothly. Another downside was the WiFi not working properly inside the room, which was quite inconvenient. I also noticed that while there was a pool table available, there was no cue provided to actually play, which was disappointing. Overall, despite the good room condition and location, these issues affected my experience. I would rate my stay 6/10.
Location, it was very pleasant and peaceful
Room tea and coffee making facilities to make whilst enjoying the views but it's a hostel and you expect this
