Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Hosts were rude insulting and caustic. Boasted constantly about funds that went into refurbishment of the inn. Breakfast napkins smelled of vomit.
the host's where incredible
Sandy and Cathy are great. Their family style set up for breakfast gets guests sitting around a table, interacting and not staring at theirmphones
Leaving
The property is quirky to say the least. It has an old world charm and is spotlessly clean. Sandy, the owner, goes out of his way to help you find things to do.
Lots of stairs. Check in is within a strict two hour window and is then mayhem as everyone turns up at once.
Schönes altes Hotel mitten in der Innenstadt.
Ein TV wäre nicht schlecht gewesen.
L’accueil et l’ambiance
Breakfast was good with yogurt and granola, coffee or tea, and freshly made croissants with jam - very tasty! Room was comfortable and quiet even though it faced the main street. Easy to get to from the main highway, and easy to get to other areas like ferry to PEI. If you are going to Cape Breton and have the time, take Sandy's advice and go the scenic route via Cape George - well worth it on a nice day!
Travel light. There is no elevator for upper floors so bring a small case if you're staying for a night or two.
Excellent little gurst house with lots of charm and .and original features. Superb breakfast served by the host in full Scottish regalia! He knows how to run a hotel, is a fine character and guests are greeted with a glass of wine and a chat on the terrace upon arrival.
Exquisite room, fun innkeeper, wine on the deck, homemade yogurt
Stairs! They do tell you ahead of time. You do not want to carry a full size suitcase up.
Sandy and Cathy are incredible hosts with a stunning property which has been restored with equal parts love and quality. Gracious and welcoming, the best mattresses and pillows ever! Great nights sleep, lovely finishes and decor, amazing deck (and wine!) and exceptional water views from our bedroom! They will not disappoint- with both their generosity of spirit and the passion they bring to this perfectly situated, attentively detailed and utterly charming historic Inn. We will be back for breakfast in that incredible dining room!
There is literally nothing to dislike- if you value quality, location, experience, value and friendship.
Walking distance to local restaurants. Very nice outdoor terrace. Breakfast was wonderful.
I don’t have anything bad to say about the property.
Endroit magnifique. Authentique à la culture écossaise. Accueil très chaleureux des propriétaires.
Historic property with a great king bed
Rooms are on the small side, everything felt tight including the hallway, but bathroom was spacious enough
What a wonderful little town. The Scotsman was a perfect place to say. Aesthetic, comfortable, and so friendly and helpful.
The hosts were excellent
Tranquillité et confort du lit
The whole vibe was great. Proprietor was extremely helpful and gracious. Would go again if ever in the area.
It was so beautiful, spotless clean and comfortable
Nothing it was all perfect!
Struttura curata e pulita.ottimo punto di appoggio
Cathy and Sandy have done a great job converting an old building to an inn. They are both very approachable, knowledgeable and very willing to help the travelers. There is a guest balcony and small garden, although we had rain during our stay so did not take advantage of it.
We had a disappointing stay, partly because of the weather and partly because we found Pictou itself to be quite lackluster (although we loved the ship Hector revitalization visit). Sandy and Cathy were very helpful and the room was ok, but of the six hotels/inns we stayed in during our 10 day visit, this was the most expensive.
I think that our hosts were lovely people and worked very hard to make us feel at home. The breakfast was very thoughtful and presentation was delightful. I felt like they really cared about making people feel comfortable.
Only thing that wasn't wonderful was that it was a little too cold (with the air on) or too warm (with the air off). Not really anyone's fault. Also, the shower was not overly inviting so I waited to shower until I got to our next location on PEI.
The Scotsman is a truly rare find…. A true Five Star experience in a three star hotel in the town of 3500 people. Immaculate and superb accommodations and attention to detail throughout. The owner, Sandy and his lovely wife restored this beautiful 18th century building to pristine condition. Their attention to detail begins at the entrance, continues in the bedrooms, and explodes in the dining area. The bed was as comfortable as anything at any Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton. Their attention to detail extended from fresh, home baked croissants for breakfast to providing L'Occitane soaps and hair products in the bathroom. Sandy, is a true raconteur, full of charming and entertaining stories and local lore. He provided several recommendations for restaurants, both locally, and on the way to Halifax. The recommendations were spot on with unique ambience, excellent food and service.
Nothing. It was beautifully appointed, perfectly maintained.
Right in town. Nice furnishings in room.
Very small room. Smallest shower I have ever seen. Old air conditioner. No tv and no common room with tv. 4 flights of stairs with luggage and no help.
Neat old building with lots of history. Well renovated. Comfortable bed
The way the wife didn’t hold back on how much she hates Nova Scotia. (The Mr. Was a friendly, polite gent though)
Charming hosts, cleanliness of rooms, patio and breakfast served on antique china.. loved the wild blueberries and fresh baked croissants with butter and jam.
Sandy and Kathy were the perfect host and hostess. Personally serving the large dining room, filled with antique's and art with historic references to the area and including the hand painted chinaware and cutlery. Sandy in his kilt offered a wealth of information with references to traditions while allowing guests to engage in conversations, learning about each other's life experiences. The outdoor covered terrace and gardens also created a nice ambience for relaxation.
Access to the terrace for beverages in after hours would be nice. I'm an early riser and would have enjoyed a coffee on the terrace.
Loved the patio.
Questionable A/C.
Everything! The owners were very accommodating and truly made this stay a memorable one. This Inn is very old and decorated with wonderful art and artifacts with beautiful rooms that are very comfortable. They have covered all the bases with their attention to details!
This is an old historical building so there is no elevator and it is a walk up to the office and to the rooms. We knew that and prepared ourselves for it.
This was an upscale experience, not just an overnight stay. Owners paid great attention to detail, comfort, and bringing Nova Scotia to life!
We liked EVERYTHING!
Everything was perfect...the attention to every detail, the superb cleanliness, the beautiful rooms, the terrrific patio, the hospitality, the location, the nutritious breakfast - this place is a true gem!I
The hotel is located in the perfect spot on Pictou. It is within walking distance to shops, restaurants and the museum. Sandy and Cathy are exceptional hosts and want to make your stay special. Our room was bright, airy with a wonderfully comfortable bed. The highlight was a breakfast served by Sandy with homemade yogurt, wild blue berries and fresh croissants. During breakfast he regaled us with his amazing stories. We were sad to leave.
Nothing
"We don't just sell a room - we sell an experience.", waren seine Worte.
The host is out there but loveable ;) The room was very clean and the breakfast with the kilt was fun
Cant tyhink of anything
Excellent B&B! Sandy & Cathy were so friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious. Their recommendations on route, places to visit, and activities were superb!
We especially enjoyed the way the hosts encouraged the guests to socialize. We were thoroughly impressed by the comfort and restoration of the property. The breakfast was served in the beautifully restored dining room by our host all kitted up in his kilt. We have stayed in many inns & B&B's - this was by far the best.
The stairs were a bit of a killer especially with a hip problem
Social time with complementary glass of wine. Beautiful decor. Helpful directions. Quality of breakfast items.Help
No help with luggage up multiple flight of stairs.
My stay was perfect , room was clean comfy and warm . Cathy the hostess was a true character . If I'm back in area I would be sure to book in again . Thanks Hamish
Nothing it was nothing short of perfect
Location was great and it is beautiful! The host was very nice and knowledgeable
I am old and the stairs 🤪really the only thing I could possibly not like was the shower was small but had excellent shower head
What a lovely charming place to stay. Sandy & Cathy were such lovely hosts, very friendly and kind. My husband being Scotish, I thought this would be a great place to stay for us. (He loved it) The building is lovely, peaceful, and very quiet. We did find the room on the small side, and there was no seating in the bedroom, just the bed and small chair. The little details in the bathroom were also such a nice touch, they really thought of everything! The library area, though, was a nice seating area. The charm of history was great from the hosts, and the artwork throughout was amazing. A delightful little continental breakfast with Sandy in his authentic Scottish kilt topped it off! It was very easy to walk to the waterfront, and a few restaurants to choose from were also nice. We did love talking to the hosts about their inn and my because my husband's Scottish, they chatted about "home." There is no elevator, so you have to walk quite a few steps, so it's not easy if you have mobility issues. We didn't mind the stairs at all, and the patio area was awesome. A cute little green space was also a nice addition for anyone to enjoy outside. Thank you, guys, for a wonderful experience! We loved this little town of Pictou. It's definitely worth staying for more than 1 night, which we only had time for. We really loved this little town on our journey thru the East Coast.
We found the bed a bit too firm for us, but the pillows and sheets were lovely. The shower is very tiny, but it worked. We didn't mind there was no TV, but if you like to have that, there aren't any in the rooms.
Our room was comfortable and quiet, and the inn’s location is a strong positive…a simple stroll from the waterfront and the town’s quaint business area. Best of all is the inn keeper. He welcomed us, hosted a reception for guests and kept conversations flowing, made dinner reservations for us, and offered directions that improved upon GPS. We we returned from dinner, he and other guests were still sitting on the balcony patio talking late into the evening.
Excellent, need to get some Earl Grey tea!
TV in room
The Innkeeper’s were amazing. Sandy arranged for us to have dinner at Tilly’s Kitchen before we arrived. He told them it was our anniversary and they rolled out the red carpet. It was such a great surprise. We loved listening to Sandy share interesting stories about the area and some Scottish history. The house is beautiful, the hospitality is perfect and the breakfast is delicious.
Nothing
Viel Charme im Frühstücksraum. Toller Service Leckere frisch gebackene Croissants
Location and socializing at breakfast and amazing dinnerware
Too many stairs, and very regimented,
Too Precise.
Could not check in early ... was on an upper floor when requested in booking to be lower floor ... STAIRS are NOT my friend!!
Our hosts were wonderful, helped with recommendations on great restaurant, and very entertaining! A historical property very much worth staying at!
Obviously the stairs but we knew that going in.
Great Location, warm, engaging, and friendly hospitality, and beautiful accomodations.
We loved everything about it!
location and staff were great
Cool house and furnishings. Lots of interesting character. Hosts were affable and gracious. Stay for the Continental breakfast!
Sehr schöne Unterkunft
Keine Kaffeekapseln Keine Mitteilung, dass Frühstück nur von 8-9h gibt
The location was perfect in the middle of town. The decor was antique and beautiful, but very cozy and clean. The facilities were very modern. We loved the balcony with all its flowers.
It couldn't have been better for adults looking for a special treat.
Enjoyed our entire stay at the Scotsman! We highly recommend
Excellent accueil.
Comfortable accomodation and exceptionally good service.
-
Quirky and very engaged hosts. Bed was very comfortable.
Lots of stairs due to age and style of the building. Breakfast limited within a sit down one hour time slot. It was silver service and the food was nice, albeit you only had the choice of yoghurt granola with blueberries followed by croissant.(first course / second course). No TVs in the rooms.
Delightful stay with wonderful service in this upscale B&B with outside deck and top shelf bedding, towels and lotions.
We had a perfect stop-over at the Scotsman Inn. We loved everything, from the historic building to the comfy rooms to the many thoughtful touches. Best of all we liked our gracious hosts.
Nice and clean rooms. Close situated to the seaside, many restaurant options. If you mind steep stairs (as mentioned on the proberties homepage), this could be an issue – not surprising in a historical house.
When we arrived, we took the stairs on the back front (which is not unusual for guests in this B&B) because front door was closed. A gentleman (who later turned out as our host) asked us if we want to check in (he skipped greeting or introducing himself). Further on, he looked down to our car on the parking area and stated, obviously unpleased: “You are standing here for a while, aren´t you?” After that, he mumbled: “Crazy…” While checking our reservation, he shouted to a lady (never introduced to her, probably his wife). behind about our nationality. Furthermore, when I came later back to reception corner I overheard our host informing another new guest about our national origin. The funny interaction proceeded during breakfast. We had nice chats with the others guest and plenty of time, because providing us with coffee, muesli, packed yoghurt, some berries and (Tata !) a crisped croissant tool nearly an our. Mainly because our host need to interfere every conversation. Some other guests liked it. Some not. I should add that the question of a fellow guest about the ingredients of the muesli (allergic issues) was answered with a grumpy: “I don’t know”. And so on…. Next day we had a wonderful breakfast at the marina. To cut a long story short: And after travelling 30 years all over the world and using B&B´s extensively, we never met such an attitude and behaviour. Main purpose of the establishment seems not to be accommodate paying guests. It is a platform for a show you can’t classify as a tragedy or a comedy.
It’s such a lovely place and the owners, Kathy and Sandy, are so lovely and helpful.
Charming, delightful inn. Sparkling clean, with lovely toiletries. Clean crisp fresh smelling linens. Easy parking. Nice view of the harbour. Easy walking distance to sights, pubs, and dining. Beautiful grounds and outdoor deck to sit on in the evening. Sandy is a quick witted, charismatic, amusing inn-keeper who serves breakfast wearing a “kilt”.
Lots of stairs if you are on the 3rd level. We were aware of that before booking. Just took a small carry on up to our room rather than the large suitcases. Limited options for breakfast. No ice in the common refrigerator. There are no TV’s which may bother some folks. We just missed tuning in to the morning news.
Location was perfect, breakfast was a nice continental spread. The place was like an art gallery with beautiful paintings and furnishings. Sandy the host is very engaging and will share stories!!
Nothing...
The owners of this property have put alot of effort into having guests feel like one big family and to feel looked after. Sandy personally served everyone their breakfast in such a classy yet friendly way, in a formal dining room complete with china and all the trimmings. It was a very special experience.
A beautiful patio and a very friendly host.
The hotel is beautiful!
Sandy!!!! He makes the stay special & goes out of his way to inform you on the area history & things to see. Cathy’s croissants are amazing. You need to do to have breakfast served by a man in a kilt.
Beautiful old building. The room was excellent, with great finishes. Washroom was functional, if small. Lots of steps to get to the 3rd floor.
Too much Sandy! While this is a nicely appointed and restored building, the host, Sandy, is just too much. While he was pleasant and accommodating in small doses, when we were alone with him over breakfast things became unpleasant. He simply needs to be the centre of attention at all times. And when discussion strayed to politics ( he’s a big Trump fan) and I expressed a contrary view, he presumed to “know exactly how I think” even though he hadn’t really paid attention to anything I had said up until then. My wife became very stressed and we just hightailed it out of there. Earlier in the conversation Sandy went on for an uncomfortably long time about how he loves to make clever or insulting replies to people who post negative reviews. So I will be interested to see what he does with this. Over to you, Sandy.
Classic building with comfortable bed and great patio and garden. The host is a gregarious Scot. Pictou is small but charming with many old buildings and a nice waterfront.
We very much enjoyed our two night stay at The Scotsman’s Inn. Sandy and Cathy were convivial hosts and provided us with a lot of helpful advice on areas of local interest and our journey onwards to Cape Breton. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and the bed/mattress was very comfortable. The Inn had been lovingly restored and was full of character. A small improvement for us would have been the provision of natural yoghurt and decaf coffee for breakfast.
Breakfast was very nice and served with style by Sandy in his kilt. As the owners are the sole employees there was no flexibility with check in time (and we got an ear full arriving less than 5 mins early). The Owner is also very vocal on political opinions which raised eyebrows with us and several guests. All in all, it was a fair stay.
Sandy & Cathy are terrific hosts and its a beautiful historic property. Sandy is a character and will keep you laughing! We had a great time and would have liked to be there for more than one night. We would absolutely stay there again.
