Fantastic hotel, food great, staff very helpful and friendly.
Lovely friendly staff, great food and an excellent Inn, loved the history.
Always wanted to stay here lovely old inn ,beautiful furniture and paintings our room was really lovely ,fab breakfast and staff couldn't do enough for us .Would go again
Poor evening meal menu
Beautiful room, I bought this as an early Xmas present for my parents who loved the building, the history and location. The staff were brilliant and breakfast very good. Highly recommend
Dinner was amazing and breakfast was excellent.
Very old original building from an age gone by and the staff were excellent.
Another lovely stay in this historic hotel. Great service and good food.
Amazing historic property.
Have been to the mermaid a few times , always lovely, staff are always friendly and polite.
Fabulous location. Helpful staff. Very historic. Took dog who was allowed in room and terrace only. The lounges were empty and it would have been nice to access those. Breakfast was nice too.
Wonderful historic Inn in the heart of Rye. Breakfast was top notch and the Inn was splendid. Would stay again. We also enjoyed the bar, the lounges and all the history.
Lovely old hotel
A beautiful hotel full of character. Amazing staff and wonderful food. Highly recommend for a stay in charming Rye.
Absolutely love staying here, the staff were great and very helpful. Would have liked a walk in shower but understand that this is not possible due to the age of property.
Not the cheapest joint in town, but offering a memorable event with good service and hospitality thrown in for good measure. This and more set in the most quaint of all cobbled streets in a super little Sussex town.
The Mermaid Inn is a special place. So much history around every corner. It's a really gorgeous setting, with period detail throughout. Staff were friendly and helpful, and rapidly corrected an error made during check-out. Breakfast was delicious and you can tell they use high quality ingredients in everything. I was slightly disappointed in the room: it was pretty stifling despite the weather being merely warm; the four poster bed was much smaller than a modern double and had a cobweb hanging from one corner; and the weird red polyester throws/curtains and cushions with plastic crystals jarred with the intricate carvings and beans around us. But all in all a good experience and we enjoyed our stay.
We loved our stay in this unique place. The staff was warm and welcoming and very accommodating and the surrounding area was gorgeous to wander. Given the age of the Inn, the facilities are excellent, although an upgrade in the bathroom, especially the shower, would be nice. Overall though, I highly recommend this wonderful, historic, and charming place!
Check in was chaos with our room not ready and different excuses being made. You will be allocated an inferior room with fake beams and tatty modern furniture in an annexe if you don’t specify the exact room you want ( but be charged the same price ) Parking is very tight , we were glad we took our older car. Our bathroom was little more than a broom cupboard with a pokey cubicle and no water pressure. Any ghostly activities are more likely to be other people snoring , plumbing issues or the battery dying in your smoke detector. Food here is pretty awful , very limited choice for breakfast . Bar meals only in the evening due to lack of staff. No nice finishing touches or attention to detail we get in similar priced hotels elsewhere. It’s a beautiful old hotel let down by poor management relying on the character of the place to fill it .
Interesting very old building with a lot of character. The desk staff seemed irritated and inconvenienced to be welcoming guests, but the gentleman who showed us to our room was very friendly and joyful.
What a find. Fascinating hotel, best staff I’ve come across in a long time, great food and drink. Highly recommend a stay and Rye itself if beautiful.
Love the Mermaid Inn, it is steeped in history, lots of tales of smugglers and ghosts and full of character. All in the beautiful historic town on Rye with excellent shopping and places to visit.
Very pleasant, nice atmosphere within the hotel.
Fantastic hotel with exceptional staff. the food was great and the hotel oozed character
After battling several cancelled trains due to Storm Eunice, we received a very warm welcome from the front desk. We stayed in room 20 and this was a clean, characterful space with a four poster bed. The historical building of the hotel is incredible, and it's well worth having a drink there in the guests-only bar too.
An excellent central location with friendly staff. Food is very good. I would recommend and visit again.
Great ambiance, log fires and cozy nooks. I would rate the restaurant far lower than the hotel. Had lobster which was more rubber than food, terribly over-cooked. Wait staff were very attentive and helpful.
Amazing spot! A must-stay place in Rye!
This hotel is very old and really quite lovely but the bathrooms are outdated. Our room was advertised as coming with a shower, but it was a hand held. There wasn’t enough height to stand up and there was no water pressure. Very unpleasant. The restaurant is overpriced for mediocre food. The staff did everything they could to make our evening pleasant but the poor quality of our meal over-rode their efforts. I’d never recommend this hotel.
Friendly staff, cosy and clean throughout
Hotel & staff excellent room very comfortable beautiful hotel great position now the down side cooked breakfast was disgusting Full English was one of the worst I have had Next morning chose the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs ( like rubber with very cheap salmon very disappointed) Would definitely stay again but would not use the restaurant
Historic but friendly - a really beautiful building and as cosy as it gets on a cold night.
Amazing historic building in super surroundings. To improve- would love to be able to park on the premises next time 🙏
All staff enjoy their job, & this comes through as an extremely happy team. The hotel is old, hundreds of years old, therefore squeaky floors are everywhere but that's what makes this hotel brilliantly fascinating, steeped in history. Yes I will be returning to stay again!
Rather disappointed with this hotel. Our check-in was matter of fact but not welcoming at all. We were told that we couldn't have dinner there that night as they were full and were given no suggestions as to where to go to eat. We had to find our own room. Breakfast was busy and adequate but nothing special at all. Check-out was definitely not friendly. Pay and go was the feeling we received. Sad.
Outstanding old building with character. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the staff where very friendly and helpful
Lovely stay. The staff were very accommodating. It's old, so of course you occasionally hear people in the adjoining room, but that's part of the experience. I was a little disappointed, having been told we can enjoy our drinks in one of the two lounges after the bar had closed, that one of the lounges was reserved for a private event - I felt they could have informed us of that when we arrived, as I was looking forward to relaxing by the fire in the lounge and it made the other one very crowded.
Charming but very uncomfortable and poorly insulated rooms. No running water for several hours while I was in shower. Covid measures not encouraged inside building.
Great location, full of character and charm and immaculately clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Food in restaurant very good both for breakfast and dinner. Rooms small but again charming. Limited parking on site so we parked in a local public car park overnight and walked the five minutes to the hotel which wasn’t an issue. Car park charge was £5.20 for 24 hours so not extortionate. Overall a lovely place to stay, busy at weekends so if you want a bit more piece and quiet a mid week visit would probably suite.
We had stayed here before but not recently and it seemed just as good as we remembered from our previous visit. A lovely unique and magical place to stay, Hospitality and Service is exceptional.
Very helpful staff, good food and a charming interior.
Lovely ancient inn full of history. We were welcomed in and the service was impressive. They clearly train their young staff with assiduousness and expect high standards. After hearing some horror stories about hotel service post lockdown, we were very impressed indeed. We loved the breakfast which had some quality local foods including delicious bread and toast. The room was clean and well looked after. Only the dinner slightly disappointed, as the main course seemed a bit overcooked. Otherwise all was fabulous.
Great stay all staff friendly and excellent service rooms spotless clean . Rye beautiful town mermaid hotel was quirky and interesting to stay in Food was very good restaurant service excellent All in all a very nice stay
Not much to add about this place that hasn't already been said. It more than lived up to expectations, the service and attention to detail from the staff from check in, the bar, the restaurant would have done justice to any hotel at any price. You may well already know about the place if not check it out Youtube. Apparently no ghosts were available on the night we stayed but you might be luckier/less lucky (delete as appropriate) than we were.
Excellent staff especially the blonde bar staff lady exemplary
Absolutely superb - the service; all the staff were smiling and helpful - the food was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. No complaints at all.
The Mermaid Inn is a beautiful, half-timbered 12th century building. My wonderful old room was wood-panelled and had a 4-poster bed. The staff were all very friendly and efficient. There was a vegan option on the bar menu, but not for breakfast or dinner.
Beautiful property, an experience rather than just somewhere to stay. All staff apart from 1 barman attentive and knowledgeable. Thrilled to be able to take our dog. Appreciate he wasn’t allowed in communal areas (such as bar/lounges) an outdoor heated seating area would have been lovely instead. Ate dinner and breakfast here, food quality and service excellent for both meals. Can’t wait to come back.
Wonderful history attached to this wonderful building. Our room was clean and inviting.
We had a lovely evening and a delicious dinner. The only criticism I have is that both the pillows on the bed were too firm for my taste. Breakfast was very good and overall we are planning to go back sometime soon.
Beautiful hotel and four poster room. Nice breakfast the following morning. Would love to stay again.
Loved it! Food was exceptional and the staff couldn’t do enough to help. Sitting by the fire to read my book with a cup of tea in the lounge was an absolute treat! Thanks!
While I'm glad we stayed in this beautiful and charming old building, I'm relieved that we only booked for one night. Our room (no. 23) was up in the roof space and would not be possible for elderly or disabled to access. It was also very cramped with a tiny double bed and medieval mattress and a cramped bathroom with a tiny bath - I would say that a particularly tall or large person would genuinely struggle to navigate the room. Yes it is 3 star so I don't expect anything fancy but at £120 it is undeniably poor value. If you stay, pay extra for a bigger room.
lovely old world charm have been many times before however this was my first overnight stay great room excellent breakfast and Glen always looks after us and makes us welcome
Wonderful historical hotel with great staff. Breakfast had many options and was delicious!
Everything is unique. It’s an amazing piece of history that is well run and friendly.
The Mermaid has a wonderful atmosphere and fellow guests all seem to sign up to enjoying the look, feel and character of the place. The hotel staff were all unfailingly cheerful, friendly and helpful. It’s one of the very few hotels that I would happily go back to again and again.
Delightful historic hotel in a beautiful and interesting town. Good facilities but also close to so many other places. Very enjoyable stay, would love to come back again. Staff are very friendly and efficient, meals are good.
Excellent value historic inn with free parking & very decent breakfast included. Couldn't fault it.
The best place ever stayed. Loved the old town character. Didn’t have enough parking for the guest, however that’s life. Was built for house and cart....
Love the Mermaid but don't expect a quiet stay - creaky floor boards and general noise from the street (tourists) - still this didn't bother us as the Mermaid 'IS' Rye and to stay there is a treat for anyone. Staff are all professional and friendly and the place is spotless
Amazing, this 800 years old building was converted to a comfort hotel, eating a Full English breakfast is a big plus in the morning. The entire old English town is clean and unique, took lots of pictures, so relax having a cup of tea In a small cafe in the afternoon.
Everything was perfect, a memorable stay for a special occasion
It was a lovely very old building taken great care of.There was plenty of information about Mermaid Inn as well as Rye.I booked late so got a small double room which was in attic, however I've stayed in much smaller. The room was plenty big enough for two.The staff were great, very happy, esp Glenn, who was very attentive in dining room.Other staff were very helpful & knowledgeable, nothing was to much trouble for any of them.I will be returning & hopefully spot a ghost !
Very historic & interesting building, right in the middle of Rye, on the town's most photographed street. The staff were very friendly & efficient too.
Rye is a beautiful old town with many medieval buildings and a castle. The Mermaid is one of the oldest buildings dating back to 1400s so is a special place to stay. It is on a cobbled street which originally led to the harbour so is very central and the entire town can be explored on foot. Its interior is in keeping with its history and the service was excellent - even gave us a sausage at breakfast to take to our dog who was not allowed in the restaurant. We will stay there again next time we visit Rye. It is not the cheapest hotel, but it is the most special!
The Mermaid Inn lived up to all expectations. The hotel is authentic and charming. We loved the bar with its roaring fire and great selection of beer, wine and gin. The staff are attentive, friendly and really knowledgeable about the hotel and area - special mention to the chap from the East End who couldn't do enough for us. The room was lovely - clean and very comfortable. And breakfast was to die for. Loved every minute of staying there.
A beautiful old building with inkeeping decor. Clean and comfortable. Exceptional staff; so friendly and helpful. Car park rather challenging for big cars but there’s a very nearby public car park!
Only thing I would like improved would be the restaurant menu not enough meat dishes for people like me allergic to fish
Fabulous little period hotel full of character. Fantastic breakfast & very comfortable bed. Would use this little gem of a find again.
If you love history this is the hotel to visit. We had a brilliant stay and lovely meal in the restaurant. All the staff were friendly and welcoming and sitting in the bar next to the fire in the evening hearing all the stories about the ghosts that have been spotted is just fascinating. We will definitely be returning.
Just a shame that children are aloud to take up 2 tables in the very nice bar with the great fireplace covered in crayons and toys at nearly 10 pm
Excellent place to stay.lovely food and drinks. Had a great weekend and the building has plenty of historical character. Would definitely recommend this.
lovely hotel. Excellent breakfast and happy helpful staff
Steeped in history, open fires and superb location - loved it!
This is a wonderful historic hotel. As would be expected, the rooms are on the small side with storage to match. The beds were comfortable. The only real drawback was the shower which was the handheld type and not easy to manoever it away from a wood framed antique mirror by the tub. Glad we checked Up on the taxi we had asked the desk staff to order for the station. It hadn't been ordered. Then we were handed a bill for our (prepaid) stay. A little confusing but sorted out satisfactorily.
Loved it definitely going back .... the staff were so friendly and professional, nothing was too much trouble... the wonderful history was a delight, and Glenn over and above good service, loved his history tour of the cellar.
Have been wanting to stay for a while now. Fab place service and idyllic location. Great food and staff.
It was wonderful, the staff, the food, & the town where the best. Thank you ☺️
Great hotel for a short visit, restaurant and bar very friendly staff in the centre of Rye with Car Parking - although not easy to find.
V nice hotel. Very historic. Great location & very central.
Stayed here several times before, always lovely. Helpful car park steward, warm welcome and shown to room. Bar with cosy feel and amazing medieval fireplace. Nice traditional breakfast
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was lovely with a four poster bed. Bathroom was a little tired but clean. Breakfast was amazing. We were there for the Jazz festival and thoroughly enjoyed our stay known Rye.
Full of character and old fashioned charm. Excellent customer service.
Full of history etc very atmospheric - reception excellent - dinner service + breakfast service very slow.
Lovely location , 600 year old full of history hotel. The room was small, bed very comfy. Nice big bathroom but with no shower facilities, but yiu coukd use the hand shower over the bath. Unfitynstkey the room was dusty , we found on old ear cotton bud ubybtge bedside table and bird feathers, we did advise reception in the afternoon who promised to sort it out. We returned after an evening out and the room was in the same nit clean condition. We spoke to the night porter. Unfortunately we could also hear the guests above us, unfortunately someone wasn’t well and woke up my partner by being sick all night. The breakfast was good, the staff very pleasant. We were so looking forward to staying and sadly choose the wrong room :
Really lovely hotel right bang in the centre of Rye. Perfect for a wedding or a weekend by the sea.
What a beautiful town and hotel. It was better then we expected. The only things that were a little difficult was the shower it was a tub with a hose no walls it worked for me but hubby being so tall found it a little harder. Parking is tight so if your on a time schedule let them know so they can make sure your park in a spot to get out. We were not aware and the staff had to wake people up for car keys to move three vehicles so we could get out and make our ferry reservation. The roads are tiny and feel like paths but that is what is so charming about the place. You can easily explore this area by foot and it is amazing. We had dinner from the bar and it was great and the staff was amazing. But we didn’t see any ghosts 😦 I would highly recommend the place and I hope I get to return for another visit.
The hotel is located right in the heart of Rye and has car parking facilities which is very useful. The staff are friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast was ok, but was quite limited. The cooked breakfast was good. However the hotel itself is quite tired. The carpets on the stairs for example old very old and in need of a good clean. The room decor needed updating. The curtains were old. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly. The shower was rather irrational. A hairdryer was provided, but the plug socket was the other side of the room from the mirror. If these little details were considered I’m sure it could be a beautiful hotel but at present I wasn’t impressed.
Lots of old beams and other period features. Nice bar with additional tables outside to enjoy the summer sunshine. Pleasant traditionally furnished restaurant.
Fabulous town stepped in history Very well preserved
Excellent hotel that has a feel of the 14th century as soon as you walk through the door hence its reputation for being haunted if you believe that is. Excellent food in restaurant with 3 course fixed price and good choice of hot and cold food at breakfast.
Had one night stay over which was lovely with a tasty breakfast in the morning. Staff were polite and helpful. Love the hotel for its history and hauntings. Will definitely be returning. Angela and Chris, Welling, Kent
Our 2 night stay was tainted by appalling service in the restaurant on our final night. we considered getting up and walking out. As a result "fine dining" it was not. waiter too busy chatting to 2 women on the next table at our expense.
Like stepping back in time, in a good way, an escape from reality. Staff friendly and helpful, great breakfast, atmospheric room, great location, not free!
Non-existent shower/water pressure laughable. Mattress was ancient. Dinner had excellent starters and desserts, but mains were not as good. Breakfast was OK. Location and ambience excellent.Staff very helpful and friendly. Would consider staying again but might check out the competition first. Having said that, it is priced about right for what it is.
A hotel of exceptional charm. I would love to come again.
Hotel is full of character and quirky features. Traditional service and layout. Expensive for a 3 star hotel but very good location. Disappointing breakfast with a limited choice of healthier options. Had dinner at the hotel on one evening but better choice of menu and better value at other restaurants around the high street. Main issue was the noise from surrounding rooms - soundproofing very poor but probably because it is such an old hotel. Did not sleep well as a result. Bath but only hand-held shower that did not work properly. Overall had atmosphere but this was at the expense of comfort and value for money.
The Mermaid Inn was a lovely place for a brief visit to Rye. The staff are fantastic and the building is charming. Had a nice dinner and breakfast as well. I would stay here again and recommend you give it a go.
Lovely coaching inn, undortunately the first night was in a room over looking Mermaid street and the noise from the cars over the cobbled surface together with the scaffolding company starting early in the morning was awfull giving us a very bad night. The next day we complained about this and were put in another room which was very good but had to spend half the day in bed to catch up on our sleep. Otherwise very good, we will know next time !!!
