Nice location. That's it! No atmosphere, rooms were freezing. Noone made up the room in 3 days so no clean towels or tea/coffee top ups (even after reporting the fact). No biscuits in the complimentary tray. Rooms very dated, dusty and bathroom dirty. Had to change rooms due to no water pressure and poor facilities. Second room not much better! Breakfast was an effort! Only us there ... had a bacon roll and a Danish. No buffet. Had dinner on first night but too rowdy as restaurant was full of drunk golfers!
Today I visited the spa at shaw hill for an Indian head massage. Therapist Pauline carried out the treatment. I had had many Indian head massages over the years and this by far was the best in my experience. Warm, welcoming, beautiful oil scent and the massage was out of this world. 10/10. I’ll be back.
First impression was it looked old and tired, BUT I WOULD DEFINITELY STAY there again and recommend it to others . However, although it was old , and apparently I was told by staff it was built in 1720, it was doing pretty well 😊 We stayed in room 24 on the first floor( no lifts) and it had 3 massive windows which looked over the golf course . The room was very big , and the bathroom had a shower and a bath. I loved the room Staff on reception were lovely and very welcoming and Jamie could give a great history lesson about the family who owned it. Breakfast was buffet style cereal, toast and pastries , but cooked breakfast was made to order and delicious. Caroline was our breakfast waitress and she was so helpful and nothing was a bother. They also hold functions and weddings and have rooms set up Beautifully. There is also a swimming pool And spa area. Even though it is old, it is clean and warm and comfortable. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, and loved the fact it had character . We were there nearing Xmas and they had all the Xmas trees and decorations up, which made it feel very cosy.
We cannot thank the staff at Shaw Hill enough for giving us the most magical autumn wedding day we could have wished for. From day one, their communication was outstanding, and they supported us every step of the way throughout our planning journey. On the day itself, Alec, Amy and the entire team created an experience we will never forget. They were always on hand—coordinating with our vendors, guiding our guests, and helping both me and my wife stay calm and relaxed from start to finish. The venue looked absolutely stunning, surrounded by beautiful autumn leaves arranged by Sofisticated Design, and the Gold Room was laid out perfectly. It truly was everything we envisioned and more, cannot recommend Shaw Hill enough for your dream wedding venue.
Myself and my partner pursued memberships here for and leisure club area (steam room, sauna, jacuzzi) and pool in February, 2025. Initially we were charged £200 each for 3 months, which we were told covered the gym and the classes and the wetside stuff. We reiterated that we were not interested in the gym, but only the wetside stuff but we were told it wasn’t possible at this time to just purchase wetside only memberships. Upon joining, we talked to some members who did pay for only wetside only memberships at a reduced rate of £150 a month and we raised this with management who allowed us to purchase wetside only memberships next time. We paid £200 each and then £150 each and then £150 each again (so £500 each for 9 months). They encouraged us to pay £600 for a year membership, but when it was £150 for 3 months and there were so many continuous issues, we decided to pay every 3 months as we did not wish to commit to a year's membership at this time! The jacuzzi, steam room and sauna and indeed the pool are all very good facilities and I have no complaints about the actual facilities. The aqua aerobics/ water exercise classes are fantastic! Lots of energy and it ends with Billie Jean (the song). However there were some difficulties which were ongoing. Shaw Hill despite advertising the leisure suite as for members and hotel guests, rents out their pool to swimming lessons for small children from Glover's swimming school who are supposed to be present from 4-7pm Monday’s (but they set up nearly an hour early and fill the changing rooms for about an hour afterwards) so it takes 5 hours away from members, 8-11 saturday (so call it 12noon by the time they’ve vacated) and Friday mornings also. Unfortunately as the pool is right next to the jacuzzi and steam room and the sauna, members really cannot enjoy a relaxing experience whilst the swimming lessons are present. The changing rooms have no cubicles available in the men’s and one only in the female changing room which makes it harder for those with children and makes it feel uneasy generally speaking for the adults in the changing rooms. Whilst the swimming lesson's are only supposed to rent 2/3rds of the pool and are supposed to leave a lane for members swimming, they frequently use this lane when they think no members want it, which makes it difficult to swim lengths if you do arrive during the time swimming lessons are on. The place is in need of a good cleaning after swimming lessons as they generally make a right mess of the changing rooms area with litter and plasters being a common sight after swimming lessons have left. Whilst having good facilities and friendly reception staff, we experienced questionable and sketchy management on several occasions. We were sent an email in October advising that they were closing the spa and pool area for 5 days in order to refurb the reception and changing rooms area. We sent numerous emails asking if these 5 days could be added into our membership but did not receive a reply, other than an out of office immediate reply, stating that the manager was away for another 11 days and would reply upon her return (which she didn’t.) During one of the swimming lessons in September; the ceiling became damaged by a toy that the instructor threw (no kidding!!)🤷♀️ and thus Shaw advised us that there would be a further few days disruption coming up while they close the pool and erect scaffolding in order to repair this. Given that we had not received any communication regarding whether or not the 5 days they had closed to refurb the reception area would be added to our memberships in October, the idea of another closure in our membership period was worrying. It was this that was the final straw that led to us not renewing our memberships. It’s a shame as the facilities are 4 star really and some of the staff bend over backwards (The aqua aerobics instructor does quite literally), but not with the swimming lessons being there 3 days a week. If you become a member, you will soon learn the times to avoid, because they are simply so disruptive. The place isn't set up for adult members to enjoy the facilities while the swimming lessons are on as even if you could block out the noise (it's hard - instructors are constantly shouting and it echos and there are a lot of children there so it's very noisy) but the jacuzzi is literally next to the pool which means if you sit in it you are effectively facing the pool. The same applies to the sauna. The steam room is tucked away a little more so if you go to the back of the steam room, you can just about not hear or see them if you try hard to block the noise out. Unfortunately physically you will not be able to stand staying in the steam room longer than a few minutes however. When trying to gain access to the changing rooms, the parents of children glare at adult members as though they shouldn't be there, whilst an array of dreadful parenting strategies are frequently on display in the changing rooms and on poolside. On one occasion, I was trying to get changed and a lady was getting changed two children (one boy, one girl) in the women's changing room and she was focusing on the small boy, but his older sister was literally just standing there, face distorted, screaming repeatedly... whilst the mother may have developed an ability to ignore this, it was very headache inducing for the adults in the changing room. QUITE FRANKLY, THE SPA AND LEISURE SUITE WOULD BE ALRIGHT WITHOUT THE SWIMMING LESSONS, BUT THEY PULL IT INTO A FAR LOWER STAR RATING THAN IT SHOULD BE. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A FOUR STAR HOTEL AND SPA BUT THE PRESENCE OF THE SWIMMING LESSONS TAKING OVER THE LEISURE SUITE THREE DAYS A WEEK IS CERTAINLY NOT AN ASSET TO THEM. IT IMPLIES GREED AND POOR MANAGEMENT AND DOUBLE BOOKING OF FACILITIES. THE MANAGEMENT HAVE NO CONTROL WHATSOVER OVER THE SWIMMING LESSONS. ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, A SWIMMING LESSON'S PARENT HAS CHANGED INTO SWIM GEAR THEMSELVES AND SAT IN THE JACUZZI WITH THEIR CHILD (WHICH IS NOT ALLOWED, AND THE SWIMMING LESSONS HAVE PAID FOR 2/3 OF THE POOL, NOT TO USE THE JACUZZI) WHICH MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR MEMBERS TO USE THE JACUZZI. THE CHILD WAS ABOUT 6-7 AND WAS SITTING IN THE JACUZZI FOR ABOUT AN HOUR PLAYING WITH BATH TOYS. DESPITE HAVING A CAMERA ON RECEPTION, AND STATING THAT POOLSIDE IS CHECKED REGULARLY (EVERY 2 HOURS) THE STAFF ON RECEPTION DO NOT NOTICE THESE THINGS UNLESS DIRECTLY NOTIFIED BY A MEMBER. THERE IS NO MEMBER OF STAFF ON POOLSIDE AND NO BUTTON TO ALERT THEM TO COME TO POOL SIDE- MEANING YOU HAVE TO WALK THROUGH THE CHANGING ROOMS AND APPEAR AT RECEPTION IN YOUR SWIM GEAR (VERY COLD AS ITS NEXT TO THE ENTRANCE DOOR) TO TRY AND TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT ISSUES, UNLESS YOU WAIT UNTIL YOU GET CHANGED AND ARE LEAVING, BUT THE STAFF DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THEN AND JUST SAY "WE'LL PASS IT ON" BUT NOTHING EVER CHANGES OR GETS DONE. WE TRIED FOR 9 MONTHS TO ENJOY MEMBERSHIPS THERE AND AS STATED, THERE ARE SOME POSITIVES. THERE ARE SOME TRULY LOVELY MEMBERS. SOME FANTASTIC STAFF (ANGELA WAS VERY GOOD!) BUT SADLY DREADFUL MANAGEMENT, INSUFFICIENT ENFORCEMENT OF THE RULES AND CONSTANT TURNING OF BLIND EYES, CONBINED WITH THE PRESENCE OF THE INFANT'S SWIMMING LESSONS HAVE SIMPLY RUINED THIS PLACE. IT WOULD BE ARLIGHT IF PROPERLY MANAGED AND WITHOUT THE SWIMMING LESSONS!
Set within beautiful ground this must attract many weddings. However on this occasion we were for a post funeral gathering. The building has seen better days and is looking rather tired. That said the staff were excellent. The room was grand, old fashioned and the bathroom was ready for a refit. No golf shop facility as it had just closed down.
As the Chief Bridesmaid for a wedding held at Shaw Hill Golf Club & Spa this past weekend, I spent months immersed in the planning process. I can honestly say that the entire experience, from the moment we first spoke to the team to the final moments of the reception, was nothing short of extraordinary. Shaw Hill is not just a beautiful venue; it is staffed by truly exceptional people who make magic happen. For anyone tasked with coordination and detail management, the organisation and approachability of the Shaw Hill team were an absolute lifesaver. They took all the pressure off, allowing the bride (and me!) to relax and fully enjoy the celebration. Everything ran seamlessly, and their professionalism meant that every potential hiccup was managed before it even became an issue. We owe huge thanks and specific praise to three members of the team who went above and beyond: Amy, Alec, and Alex. Their combined effort provided an amazing level of service. They were tirelessly organised, always accessible for questions, and genuinely approachable, making us feel like nothing was too much trouble. They clearly love what they do, and that energy translates directly into flawless execution. If you are looking for a venue that offers stunning surroundings, fantastic amenities, and—most importantly—a world-class team committed to delivering perfection, look no further than Shaw Hill. Five stars across the board; they are highly recommended!
Good gym
We recently hosted a charity event at Shaw Hill and I cannot fault the production team. Alex, Alec and Abbie were amazing - nothing was too much trouble for them and they helped to make the event a success. In the lead up to the event, Amy and the team were very accommodating and allowed us to visit and discuss with a member of the team. Would recommend hosting an event with Shaw Hill.
Didn't use it
Generally a nice hotel, staff were nice. We wasn’t given full information on check in, such as if you wanted your room cleaned you had to book that the night before. Also there was a private event on Friday night & when we went to the dine we was initially told we couldn’t eat in the hotel, after complaining we was told we could dine but not till after 8pm once the private event was catered for. We agreed to this but our food order was not taken till 8.30pm & that was after prompting…! It was nearly 10pm before our food arrived. It made you feel rather unimportant as a guest. However food was really nice.
Firstly, the cleanliness of the family bedroom we were given was entirely unacceptable. The room was infested with flies (even though no windows were ever opened in the bedroom) – we killed approximately eight within the first two hours, yet they continued to appear throughout. The bin was filthy, and the bathroom window sill was also covered in dead flies. We attempted to control the flies ourselves, however at 10pm at night when they just kept reappearing we gave up and requested to move rooms, but the only option available was a queen room. As a result, my father had to remain in the fly-infested room. As we were moving to a queen room with my mother, we asked a member of staff for an additional quilt, but was told that wasn’t possible. I then took the quilt off one of the beds in the family room (we were moving from) and discovered a large amount of someone else's hair within the quilt cover upon removing it – a deeply unpleasant discovery, as shown in the attached photo. Furthermore, we were told by a staff member that no additional pillows or bedding could be provided, as housekeeping were not available and the storage room was locked. It seems quite unreasonable that guests cannot request basic items like a pillow or blanket outside housekeeping hours. Additionally, we were surprised to learn that guests are expected to bring their room towels to the spa – and that forgetting to do so incurs a charge to hire one. This resulted in us having to use damp towels after showering in our room. While this policy may be understandable for spa or gym-only visitors, hotel guests should be informed clearly in advance. This was not made clear to us at any point prior to our visit. Breakfast was also disappointing. Prior to arrival, we were informed that breakfast would be cooked to order. In reality, the menu was extremely limited, and the "natural yoghurt and fruit platter" turned out to be some slices of watermelon alongside individual pre-packaged strawberry yoghurts, which were certainly not natural. Furthermore, we had to repeatedly ask for a pot of tea before a member of staff reluctantly provided one. Finally, the general state of the hotel was far from what we expected. Whilst we understand and appreciate that renovations are taking place to improve the hotel, the family room we were allocated was unclean, in dire need of repairs and had a strong and unpleasant odour of glue and paint, which made the environment quite uncomfortable. I do not think the bedroom should have been open to guests. When we handed our keys back, we asked for updates on the room and they provided no feedback and seems uninterested with our worries that the room would be booked out again and another family would have similar issue. Disappointing stay from start to finish! Would never book there again.
The room was very large and the bed comfortable. We coukdnt
Unfortunately the jacuzzi was not working during our stay
Party of 8 We had a couple of hiccups with check in and the rooms are slightly tired Otherwise it was an enjoyable day experience , particularly the breakfast Superb staff who were all positive and could not have done more to make our trip of the memorable variety!!
Beds were awful. Rooms were hot. Staff very unfriendly.
I stayed one night at this hotel and overall had a great experience. The customer service was excellent, especially the waiting staff in the breakfast area who were very attentive. The room was massive with a lovely view, which made the stay even more enjoyable. The bus service was also very convenient and well-organized. The only downside was the lack of a lift. With a large piece of luggage, I had to carry it upstairs, which was a bit inconvenient. Other than that, everything was very nice and I truly enjoyed my stay.
Our wedding at Shaw Hill Golf and Spa Hotel was honestly incredible! The venue itself is so beautiful and its surroundings, I knew as soon as I walked in that this was the venue we wanted to get married in. The Gold Room, where we had our ceremony is absolutely beautiful and the decor by Sophisticated Events was breathtaking. All of the staff are brilliant. Everyone was so attentive and helpful, making sure everything ran smoothly. A special mention goes to Alec, our master of ceremonies, he went above and beyond for us and made the whole experience even more special, nothing was too much and we’ve had comments from family and friends about how nice he was and how much effort he made with everyone there, he is a true credit to this place! We couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate our day!
We had our wedding at Shaw Hill, and it was genuinely the best day of our lives. From the very beginning, the team made us feel completely at ease. Weeks before the big day, Amy booked us in for a chat, and we had such a laugh it honestly helped ease all my worries and made me feel so excited rather than stressed! On the day itself, despite the groom’s car breaking down (yes, really!), everything ran flawlessly and that’s all down to the incredible staff. A massive shoutout to Alec, our wedding coordinator and the most amazing Master of Ceremonies. He went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect his energy, professionalism, and attention to detail were second to none. Every single member of staff on the day was just incredible nothing was too much trouble, and they truly made us feel like royalty. The whole experience was magical, and if I could do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat. If you’re considering Shaw Hill for your wedding, stop thinking and just do it and definitely go for the Diamond Package! You will not regret it. Highly, highly recommend thank you again to everyone at Shaw Hill for making our day so unforgettable. Mr & Mrs Smith - 30.08.2025
The staff were welcoming, our room was clean but there was extensive water damage on the ceiling, the sash windows were in poor condition and one was even painted shut! We stayed for a family wedding and were very disappointed with the overall, tired, condition of the property. The bride and groom had to move to another room as the honeymoon suite flooded during the night! Much work needed to bring it up to standard I would think!
Great golf course. Lovely staff especially Tom the bar man. Hotel is a little tired but great food and service. Clean rooms and bathrooms just a little tired.
Great food, comfy room and excellent service- what more can you ask for
Old and tired room... but the hotel is undergoing renovation, so hopefully the room
My husband and I had a very enjoyable night away at this hotel. Every single member of staff were absolutely lovely and the food comes highly recommmended. Would definitely stay here again.
Spa was excellent. Everything working ie sauna, jacuzzi and steam room. Staff very friendly
Rooms are basic and look tired. The restaurant area is excellent and food is delicious! Slight confusion in checking out - but the staff are extremely helpful and work to resolve the issues
Service for food on the 2 days has been absolutely horrendous. We are sitting waiting for a breakfast that was ordered 45 minutes ago, and still no sign . Place is pretty much still in the 1970s as is the service
Excellent reception Staff. Helpful bubble and a pleasure to speak to after a four hour drive. Room 11 was a bit tired and decor out dated but the bed was very comfy and I had a great nights sleep.
Beautiful venue, incredible food, fantastic staff, everyone so kind and friendly 😊 our wedding day could not have been more perfect 💜
You cannot fault the service in this place. I stay regularly so I can visit family and the staff always remember me and do their best to make my stay with the children as pleasant as possible.
The food was beautiful, always well presented and delicious. Even the breakfasts were well presented plentiful and great choices. The hotel is an old building with lots of original features, tastefully made up to date. It is a hotel with a choice of various beautiful en suite rooms and some wonderful views of the beautiful golf course the hotel stands on. It is a golf resort and spa hotel. The golf rates and buggy hire are very reasonable and the spa offers so many different treatments. The hotel also has a well equipped gym and a lovely pool which guests can use during their stay. The pool has a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna too. It is a wonderful place to stay and well worth a visit, you won't want to go home.
The room we had, which was apparently one of the best rooms, was very tired and a little neglected. Shower was terrible with hardly any pressure. Drains in the bathroom were stinking. carpets and flooring were filthy, some of the staff were excellent but others were a bit snooty. Food was really nice, I’d advise on getting to breakfast early though, even though it wasn’t busy the fresh food soon ran out.
The room was very nicely furnished out. The one down side was the view of room!! The breakfast was very good. The amenities weren’t used but will return to do so in the near future. The staff in all areas of the hotel were amenable to requests. Thank you
The property is in desperate need of an overhaul. Whilst the communal areas are nice, my room was extremely dated. I do appreciate that the building is a listed property, but the sash windows were rotten and the wooden frame was disintegrating. The sealant in the bathroom had come away from the bath and the flooring and the toilet flush was broken. During a stay of 4 nights, my room was not tended once, towels not changed, bin left unemptied and the milk and teabags were not replenished. Luckily, I only used the hotel to sleep, but would not consider it for a holiday break. I asked twice for information about the Spa, but no one could help. Overall, very disappointed… not at all what I was expecting.
A brief overnighter - sadly no golf Hotel wise I couldn’t fault it. Check in was efficient. The lady was lovely. Nice little room upgrade foc too Couple of pints pre dinner then really tasty food and great service. Prices reasonable Room was great. Slept fantastic. Pre brekkie swim. Excellent leisure facilities then a belting breakfast and off 13 hours in total but will stay again for sure
The facade and main areas were good and well appointed, however the moment you step into the hallways, there is damp, wall paper hanging off, and lots of very old ceiling tiles etc with water stains, and looking like they would fall down any minute. This apparently was in the ‘upgraded rooms’ which makes me worry about what the starting point may have been. Bathroom window was very large and right next to the toilet (all at body height) and only had a net curtain for obscuring - great in the day, less great at night, turn on the bathroom light and the staff area has full visibility (I know because when I turned out the light, a member of staff below was looking directly at me). The bedroom window had no net curtain, so your choice in the morning is to dress in a poorly lit room (light bulbs were very inadequate for the room size), or open the curtains in a life of Brian style ‘share all’. The staff were friendly and polite, however at check in the room wasn’t ready (we arrive mid afternoon, because we were booked in for spa treatments), and housekeeping were not ready (which is ok), it was suggested we could use the pool, which we did, but had to pay £2 extra each for towels, as we weren’t able to get any from our rooms, because the rooms were not ready. The bath shower area was so poorly fought through that there was no way of showering without flooding the bathroom all in all a very tired hotel great in the common areas but appalling behind the facade.
We had our wedding at shaw hill in this month. Everything when so smooth and better than we could ever imagine! The food was amazing & delicious. The Hotel had amazing spaces for little and older ones. The views were amazing. Alec was our coordinator for the day and we couldn’t of been more pleased of it, he did an exceptional job, always there when we need it and amazing coordinate everything through the day, a massive thank you! We stayed sleeping at the hotel and it was very comfortable & delicious breakfast in the morning after.
I have stayed all over the country with my job but this has to be up there with the worst customer service experience. Gym staff rude, breakfast staff rude and checking out staff rude. I felt like they judged me by appearance a middle aged man dressed casual with a Yorkshire accent when they are used to pampering over elderly rich golfers.
Everything
We had no idea a prom was being held so parking very difficult. Due to prom we were told we could not eat in the restaurant until after 8. We booked a table for 8:30 to be told good stopped at 8. Luckily the chef said it was ok and we could order. Had a nice meal and waiting staff were very helpful. Could not have breakfast as we wanted to as this finished at the early time of 9:30.
Great rooms and ambience...
The hotel was set around a beautiful golf course nice breakfast
Everything
Everything is good about thisvplace
The staff are lovely but we had a standard room and the bed was very uncomfortable, they could do with being upgraded. I have stayed in travel lodges and premier inns with better mattresses. Over all the stay was nice lovely to have access to the pool and spa that made the weekend away even better. The weather wasn't nice so unable to sit outside however that would have been nice. My daughter has disabilities and the staff were all amazing with her and very patient.
Went as we were guests of a wedding. Looks lovely at first glance but when you enter it’s extremely tired. Rooms are in very poor state. Beds uncomfortable. The staff however are amazing and hardworking.
We went for a spa, dinner, bed and breakfast package with you. This was booked for my mum and myself for mother's day and my daughter for her birthday (3 generations coming together as a rare treat, as I don't live near my mum). I just wanted to express my disappointment with our experience at Shaw Hill Golf Club and Spa Hotel. Cons: Hotel- - Burning hot radiator, struggled to adjust. - The window was heavy and hard to open (very heavy). Very hot in the room. - Shower/bath extremely hot or cold (daughter burnt finger, while checking temperature). Didn't keep it's temperature. - Extractor in the bathroom doesn't work, which makes the room even hotter. - Stiff bathroom sink taps. - the double bed in the room had an extremely uncomfortable hard mattress. Allamby's- - On arrival for our dinner we were told that there were no specials left. All 3 of us asked to order fillet steak, to be told there was no fillet steak. Just 2 left but they had been reserved. We weren't aware that you had to/ or could reserve food? This left us disappointed. The waiter then recommended steak frites, stating that it's a really lean piece of steak. All 3 of us ordered this on his recommendation. When they arrived I requested ketchup for my daughter and said that we were still waiting on our broccoli side order. These didn't arrive until we asked again. 2 out of the 3 steak frites were fatty. The waiter apologised for this and agreed to not charge us for the broccoli. * The tables either side of us also wanted to order fillet steaks, they were also clearly disappointed. My mum and daughter ordered a brownie for dessert and a asked for a espresso martini instead of a dessert. My drink arrived within a few minutes. After around 20 minutes, after I had finished my drink. I had to ask another waiter about the brownies. Around 10 minutes later, the brownies arrived (which looked pre cut). My mum then had to point out that there was meant to be ice cream with them, which they got. The waiter apologised, and stated that staff hadn't turned in and they are a chef down. Staff appeared to look flustered and frustrated. At this point I wanted to just get out of the restaurant to try and redeem what was meant to be a treat for us all. As you can imagine after the money I spent on the break away, it did not feel like a treat at this point. I asked for the bill. When it arrived I double checked it. Our £28 each meal allowance had not been removed and we were charged approx £10 extra for another tables drinks (2 Pepsi's and an Estrella). The waiter removed the drinks added and explained that to get our meal allowance we need to charge it to our room. We hadn't been told this previously and some people may have just paid this! - In the morning we went for our booked breakfast slot (10am). I went to get to coffees but another guest told me the coffee machine is not working now (she seemed frustrated), so I got us fruit juices instead. My mum and daughter went to the breakfast buffet and there were minimal things left. I went over to the buffet, see pic attached. There were no plates left, minimal food on display. I asked a waitress for plates and asking if they could bring more fruit out. (She brought plates out but no more fresh fruit was brought out, more disappointment). I saw a lady getting coffee so I went back to the machine. It had broke again, the lady behind me said all she got was hot milk as the coffee didn't come out. A waitress fixed it, and I got 2 coffees. No decaf option. The spa break was supposed to be a treat for all 3 of us, which is something we haven't managed to do before. So understandably we all feel extremely disappointed with our experience. I expressed my disappointment and sent a complaint a day later. 3 weeks on I am waiting for a reply. Don't waste your money!
Very comfortable and clean room. Staff friendly and helpful.
The arrival through the golf course in the sunshine was spectacular. And access to the gym and pool is a bonus. Sadly, the hotel part does not live up to the golf part. Rooms are well over due a refurb, very tired condition and on the night I stayed incredibly hot with no fans available in the room or at reception.
We couldn’t have hoped for anything more. Hannah was fabulous throughout the planning process, always helpful and patient. After our first visit we spent the whole day just talking about Shaw Hill so we knew it was the place for us. I definitely contacted Hannah with lots of questions, sometimes the same question more than once and she was always so friendly and patient with me. Always assuring me (a self confessed control freak) that everything would be taken care of and set up the way we want. On the day Alex was so attentive and guided our day wonderfully. When we arrived from church we had drinks and canapés waiting for us. The room was set up just as I had hoped and during our wedding breakfast nothing was too much trouble. The team are so knowledgeable, Alex asked what playlist we would like during our wedding breakfast and said they had something that seemed like it would be our style following our entrance to Chris Brown Forever and it absolutely was our style. A few guests couldn’t resist a dance between courses telling me the music was spot on. Simple things like this made us feel so well taken care of throughout the whole day. We’ve had numerous compliments from guests about how amazing the food was. The evening do was incredible, our DJ who we booked through Shaw Hill was wonderful and it was down to him that the dance floor was never empty, the atmosphere was something else throughout the whole day. We even had to get the cake cut before our guests danced it off the dance floor. A week later I’m still living on the high of the day, it was truly spectacular. Thank you to the whole team at Shaw Hill for making our day so wonderful.
Ok stay
What an amazing place. We dined in Allamby’s Brasserie, beautiful food the beef melts in the mouth, the brownie is divine I wanted to order another. Stuart, Henry and Alec gave amazing service as always. I can’t recommend this place enough! The menu is really cheap for Sunday lunch and it is a lovely place to come with my family, the atmosphere is always perfect. Can’t wait to come back!
The deluxe bedroom upgrade was not deluxe with very old bathroom fittings, windows difficult to open (sash), very noisy squeaky floorboards in our room but we also heard distinctly the boards from adjacent room (at 3.00am !). Also noisy conversations from adjacent room Very expensive breakfast at £15.00 each (not taken) Good local restaurants and pubs in short driving distance.
Absolutely terrible staff and management. They dont respond to any negative complaints ignore emails and refuse to call you back. As a long time leisure member I find this kind of behaviour extremely unprofessional. Staff need some serious customer service training. Pool out of date, serious hygiene issues that would make your toes curl, all I can say is don't swallow any water while swimming and sanitise after using the showers.
The Hotel is a lovely building and the grounds are beautiful, we were upgraded to another room which was so spacious and comfortable and the bed was so comfy, Jamie and i didn't get the other mans name on reception, they were amazing, made us feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble, i would stay here again.
Peaceful, tranquil and quality food and service.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Room was very dated but clean, spacious and extremely comfy and offered a good nights sleep. Public areas were best and tidy, unfortunately I didn’t get chance to try the restaurant or spa. I would visit again - thank you
Excellent location! Staff were so helpful - nothing was any trouble. Food was very good. Excellent all round.
Stayed here nigh before a business meeting nearby , excellent comms, I had an email response within 2 hours to a query , Parking was easy , check in was quick efficient and friendly. The building is grade 2 listed , and quite old so it has a few quicks, I was able to open the window in bedroom, so wasn’t roasted alive , unlike some hotels , bathroom had been modernised, and worked well. Plenty of storage , with a place to work. Restaurant/ Bar experience was also positive and very reasonable priced drinks . Breakfast was star of the show , buffet continental , and cooked to order full English , very high quality sausages too, Will certainly return
Convenient location. Value.
The location was great with a relaxing feel, surrounds very nice with the option of golfing as well. Pool facility was good and In good condition also offered sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Restaurant and bar both clean and well serviced by the staff with everyone being helpful and attentive. Bedroom was a little dated and could do with a little attention but there bathroom was nice and clean and also had a bath
Steak Night - Wow!!! 5 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Been coming to Shaw Hill for 15+ years and always had excellent food and service from all the staff here. However, tonight Allamby’s Steak and Sax Night was off the charts. Compliments to the chef for delivering a platter of steaks cooked to perfection and front of house Stew, Alex and Alek who all contributed to a wonderful evening. Great entertainment too! 🎷 Well done Shaw Hill - keep up the amazing work. 👏👏👏👏 See you next year!
The staff were absolutely incredible considering how busy it was all day. We came for my mum for mother’s day and as well as the food being flavourful and well presented the staff were going to all lengths to ensure we had an amazing day. Especially staff members Ruby and Manager Stuart/Stewart. Service could have been a little faster however given the number of people that were in the restaurant AND bar area all staff members kept up extremely well whilst smiling and we noticed them laughing with eachother which is lovely to see knowing how stressful hospitality.
Very relaxing and quiet. And at a very reasonable price too. Would definitely stay again if at that price.
£20 for 2 courses Sunday offer. The experience was spot on. All staff were efficient and attentive. We didn’t wait long to order and the food arrived promptly. Restaurant was cosy, spotless and inviting Food was so tasty. I had ham hock and roast pork. All food was well presented and the perfect temperature. There was plenty of gravy too. Gravy was amazing. I can’t believe the quality of the food for the price. Best Sunday Lunch I’ve had in the area.
Enjoyed my stay it was nice and quiet with the added benefit of being able to have a dip in the onsite swimming pool
We had our wedding day here and it was the most fantastic day! Hannah, Alex ans the rest of the team were absolutely incredible and we couldn’t have asked for better people to make sure our day went as smoothly as it did. Would highly recommend! 🤍
Great stay in a quiet environment.
Lovely staff. It always feels like coming home
A stunning hotel building in wonderful grounds Great scenery and facilities Let down by the old fashion rooms in my honest opinion Only 1 plug socket in the room Room looks very dated Shower temp only loop warm rooms just need modernising staff very friendly food both lunch and breakfast exceptionally good
Staff were friendly, public areas beautiful, however our room was a complete let down , dated, dark and cold, the view from the window was an old moss covered fence panel which blocked out most of the light. On our first night we returned from a family party at 1115. The only bar open was in the area where a wedding reception was. We only wanted to buy 2 soft drinks but was told this was not possible as we were not wedding guests….on the second night the heating appeared to have stopped working so the room was extremely cold. This was reported on check out. I think that clearly money needs spending on the accommodation, so that it matches all the public areas. It would then be a truly lovely hotel.
Great hotel with well maintained spa facilities & pool.
We got a deal for £90 which included a spa a treatment and afternoon tea. Lovely facilities, large pool, a steam room, a sauna and a jacuzzi. Wasn’t too busy for a Saturday afternoon, the treatment was brilliant I went for neck and back massage which I hadn’t had before but I’d go again. Nice surroundings. Afternoon tea was very nice. Staff great. I’d definitely return.
I recently celebrated a birthday here. The Penina Suite was beautifully dressed. The whole booking system was so easy. The party went well and the food was amazing. We had the afternoon tea. The staff were friendly and helpful. Supplied us with things we had forgotten. If you are celebrating a party or Wedding I would highly recommend.
An excellent mother&daughter spa day greeted by a lovely receptionist, a couple hours using the leisure facilities an amazing full body massage by Sophie&phoebe, followed by afternoon tea at the Allamby restaurant will definitely be coming back, Thankyou 👌
I stay at Shaw Hill a fair amount and have to say it works well for me. They have started to work on this Hotel and now the Bar and Restaurant are now complete it has made for a much better stay. I will say if you like an Espresso Martini make sure you speak to Stu the restaurant manager, honestly probably the best I've had, anywhere.... Overall this hotel is well located with a Good Gym & Spa and a great gold course. Will continue to stay here and have another Espresso Martini.....
What a fantastic evening for New Year’s Eve! We’ve been for many years but thought this was the best yet. Beautiful room, great DJ and lovely food. The staff were excellent. I was with a group of 11 people and we had a fantastic time. We will be back next year.
I taught it was Disgusting Room 17. The Door lock receiver was falling off. That makes it a major Health Hazard for anyone staying in room 17. It was full of stains on floor Walls Ceiling. The furniture was falling apart. The Windows were rotting.
Nice hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Jamie on reception was so nice and simply couldn’t do enough to help. He truly went the extra mile, an absolute star. The restaurant staff were also lovely and the food was excellent
The room was very dated and the water pressure very low. On check out a vat receipt was also not available.
We stayed at Shaw Hill in the family room (number 17) and the experience was very poor. The staff at Shaw Hill are fantastic, the brasserie was very good and the spa is lovely but the beds were absolutely awful, the mattresses were probably five years past their best and were the worst I have ever slept on, so much so it triggered a very painful back. There was no hairdryer, no iron and only two towels were provided fro three people so we had to go and ask for them. I'd certainly return for a meal but honestly I would never stay in the rooms again as this was worse than a Premier Inn but much more expensive.
wow what a absolute disgrace . charged us £35 for gold where i lost 5 balls on the front nine without missing a fairway more than fifteen yards at worst . green are full of disease you are deceitfully as your not making customers aware of the absolute disgrace e of a condition your course is in shocking
Very dated furniture , poor shower dated entertainment system
We stayed here for our first wedding anniversary on the 26th October. Loved every minute if the place, and the staff were absolutely superb from check-in to check out. There was no bother at all. Stuart in the restaurant was excellent and highly attentive! Nicola who handled our booking, again, was absolutely spot on. Emailed a query at 7.25 one morning and had a response less than 15 minutes later! The room we had was gorgeous with brilliant views over the golf course. All the food was delicious and well presented. We had a visit to the pool etc in the morning and again really pleased with the facilities. One piece of advice I was given by a regular there is the steam room takes about an hour to properly heat up in the morning, we went down about 8.30ish so it wasn't quite warm in there, but the sauna was nice and toasty which more than made up for it! Would happily stay again guys, you all did a fantastic job, thank you for a great night 👍
Excellent stay in this beautiful hotel. Appears to have been recently refurbished to a high standard. We also loved using the facilities - gym and pool, which was included in the price of our room. All facilities were clean and all staff were extremely friendly and could not do enough for us. We had breakfast in the hotel restaurant and this was of high quality and again the staff were so welcoming and could not do enough for us. We will definitely be staying here again when we next come to visit family. Thank you
Clean and tidy room with comfortable bed. Good facilities in the pool and spa area. Breakfast was great. Picturesque surroundings with friendly staff. Will stay again and book on the golf course.
We had a lovely stay. The facilities are great, with access to the spa, and the rooms are warm and clean. Bar space has recently been redone and looks lovely.

The hotel itself was impressive .However , our room was in need of a refurbishment.Dated fixture and fittings .Very small double bed ….. but it was a cheap room rate
The room was cold. Rang to reception who told us the heating was on a timer and it shoukd come on but it never did. Communication between reception and dining area very poor. Quoted 1 price at reception for breakfast and then quoted a different price after we had finished breakfast to pay for it. Breakfast was cold. Which is not expected when youre supposed to be ordering fresh off a menu.
Beautiful property but some areas are in need of updating.
Staff were lovely but it's a very tired property in need of some modernisation. Dinner was excellent but breakfast (food, service and value) was like being in a different hotel!
Lovely hotel downstairs lovely staff and very nice golf course on the other hand the rooms are very dated and not modern like shown so not work the money we paid for a room which looked 20 years old. We used the spa facilities and they are average not modern like some but all was working and you could use free of charge with the stay at the hotel.
The room was dated and requires refurbishment but in genera a pleasant stay, beds were excellent good nights sleep.
Amazing stay loved the leisure team so helpful The facilities are fantastic will stay again and again
Hotel needs improving. Great place to have your wedding or have a round of golf but they lack the hospitality of a hotel. Carpets are very old and worn. Rooms are over cluttered with furniture. Bathroom is from the 90's. Didn't get to use the pool and spa as it closed at 6 pm and checked n was at 3pm. We got there after a three and a half hour drive, so we had a siesta nap only to find out that the pool had closed. In the morning (10.30am) we where woken up by noises of someone trying to break into our room (which was locked from the inside). I yelled and the person said 'oh its only housekeeping! I'll come back later! Later, i found out that their check out time is 10.30, which is very weird. I've stayed in hundreds of hotels and the earliest check out I've ever experienced is 11:30am.
Had a fabulous stay at Shaw Hill Golf Resort Hotel. Upon arrival we were greeted by a very helpful, friendly and welcoming member of staff on reception who upgraded our rooms without any prompt from us. We were also informed about breakfast options if we so wished. The rooms were spacious, clean and had lovely views over the immaculately kept golf course. I’d read reviews that the rooms were ‘dated’ but our room clearly had a newly fitted carpet and decor and furnishings were well in fitting with the style of the hotel and added to its feel and character. Breakfast was amazing - a continental buffet and cooked to order hot options. All staff were welcoming, warm and friendly and very accommodating. If you appreciate warm, comfortable and bespoke hotels as opposed to the large chains of modern and uniformity ones then I’d highly recommend Shaw Hill. We will definitely be returning.
We had a lovely stay; the staff were lovely, the food was great, and the kids and I enjoyed swimming in the hotel pool. Our rooms were clean and comfortable, if a little dated, and the building and its surroundings were pretty. Would happily stay here again.
Too noisy behind the wall.
Our room was dirty, dingy and dark. Very disappointing indeed.
