Gora Kadan

I was initially planning to go to Mount Fuji and then found Gora Kadan in the Hakone area. It seemed like a very luxurious and traditional Japanese inn/onsen and I figured I would head to Hakone just to stay at Gora Kadan. I'm glad to say that this was my best decision when planning my trip to Japan as Gora Kadan was easily one of the most beautiful hotels I've stayed in. The staff, customer service, location, rooms, facilities, food, etc. were all top notch and everyone at the inn did their utmost best to make sure we were well taken care of. I also really appreciate that any booking you do will include one of the members of staff accompanying you to the facility. In our itinerary, we booked a room with our own private outdoor onsen, a lunch at their Kaiseki restaurant, a dinner at their exclusive and difficult to book Sushi restaurant, a stay at the swimming pool and Jacuzzi, and finally a massage/facial treatment. Everything we did was excellent and what stood out the most was easily the traditional Japanese breakfast. We have had some previously in our trip, but this was easily the most impressive version with pretty much everything you could think of out of classic Japanese cuisine. I would also personally like to give a huge thanks to the staff who helped me reserve the Sushi restaurant. I was a little worried as the place said "temporarily closed" up until the day of our trip and I was pleasantly surprised that everything was in fact properly booked and we got to experience some of the best sushi we ever had.

I honestly can't find any faults. The only thing would be that I wish we stayed longer as it was a really magical moment together with my partner.

For us it was a unique and wonderful experience of what (we imagined) to be in a traditional ryokan. The staff were so helpful and welcoming, and the food was also fantastic.

Sleeping on a futon was very comfortable…..but once you reach a certain age, getting out of bed and back on your feet can be a little difficult!

The price tag was steep, so expectations were high — and while we had a good time, the hotel didn’t quite live up to them. Service was uneven, ranging from outstanding to mediocre: some staff were untrained, with a language barrier and a clear lack of polish that you don’t expect at this level. The food was excellent and beautifully presented, though the breakfast croissants were hard. Outside regular dining hours, a small lounge offers a very limited selection of sandwiches — and that’s it. The property itself is in need of refurbishment — paint and woodwork show wear that wouldn’t pass muster at a hotel positioned in this price bracket. The baths are pleasant but ordinary; nothing that elevates them beyond what you’d find at half the price.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

The hotel grounds are especially beautiful in the spring. I had worried that the traditional experience might feel stiff or uncomfortable, but the staff was genuinely warm and welcoming. The attendants for our room and in the women’s onsen were kind and made us feel at ease. I’m also very grateful to the hotel driver, who went out of his way to help my daughter and me when we were standing in the parking lot, unsure how to get to Gora Park. He suggested starting at the top so we could enjoy the walk downhill, and even gave us a ride. His thoughtfulness and our sweet room attendant enhanced our stay. I also enjoyed having staff take care of checkout and taxi on departure.

The food presentation and execution are beautiful and a memorable experience. Unfortunately, some things were a bit exotic for my Western taste. The wood bathroom countertop is a warm, earthy look, but unfortunately, dark and discolored around the faucets.

The staff were all amazing and we loved the calm, peaceful vibe.

There were no public gardens to walk around which we had been expecting. Also we feel the price of the drinks was excessive. One small point is that the indoor swimming pool area was far too hot to use.

Our personal room concierge went above and beyond to accomodare us. The food was excellent and the place as such just an amazing experience.

Impecable guest service. Took good care of us even though we arrived early, with good tips for lunch and even making a car available to drive us and pick us up. The hotel is breathtaking and the room is beautiful and very clean and well kept. We had our personal hostess and she was very sweet and discreet. A perfect stay.

Stayed in the regular room. Very traditional feeling. Perfect for a relaxing stay. The massage was the best we had ever. Definitely book the family bath.

The property while relaxing, it is relatively old. The bathroom basin wood countertop is starting to rot due to water ponding at the tap. Bed sheet has some stain on it too.

Simply one of the best hotel experiences we've ever had. The design of the hotel was breathtaking. Onsens so special. We tried the private family bath too which was a great experience. All meals served by our lovely host who was so wonderful, generous & funny! We ordered shiatsu massages in our rooms, on mattress so we could just go to sleep afterwards and we did - blissful.

Super nice staff, very welcoming and accommodating. Onsen facility was great and not too crowded. A quiet relaxing atmosphere overall after leaving Tokyo.

You can tell that the facilities have seen better days and are a bit dated in terms of decor and overall cleanliness. The service probably makes up for that fact, but still not hard to notice.

古いものを活かしてるが、清潔感があり、人と程よく接するくらいで、静寂の中久しぶりにゆっくり出来ました。温泉の湯質も良く、内風呂、家族風呂、大浴場全て良かったです。最高のホスピタリティによる部屋食もレベルが高く、またリピートしたいと思いました。ミシュラン3キーにしてはコスパ高いと思います。隣の音も全く気にならなかったです。また行きたい時に予約が取れることを願います。

線路が近く、多少音が気になりますが、それも景色にマッチしてました。

The staff is extremely accommodating to same day requests. Only stayed overnight and they were able to book us a private onsen for the next morning and a long taxi ride to Fujikawaguchiko. They also had staff that spoke perfect English, which was helpful.

Der Service-alle Mitarbeiter waren hochmotiviert, freundlich und ihr Servicegedanke auf höchstem Niveau.

Die Anlage ist in die Jahre gekommen. In den Zimmern und Gängen riecht es modrig. Die gesamte Zimmerausstattung entspricht nicht einem 5 Sterne Hotel. Die Größe des privaten Onsen ist sehr klein, nur für eine Person ausreichend. Der Übernachtungspreis ist dem Hotel nicht angemessen.

I liked the reception and the food

I didn’t like the room: it was much smaller and older than I remember and is a bit outdated. When checking in we were told that the private banquets rooms were all booked and we therefore had to eat in the restaurant. The dining area was in an old house and felt very uncomfortable. The wait staff was all non Japanese. We were also told by the waitress that all the water in our private onsen in our rooms was just regular tap water. This made me feel very disappointed as I could have just taken a bath at home. The next day I asked other people at the front desk about this and got different answers: one said only the public onsen had natural spring water, another said the onsen in our rooms also had natural spring water and another said it was half and half.

This was day 2 of our stay in a different room: this room was on the fifth floor and much more spacious with an onsen and large balcony. We requested a different dining area for breakfast and dinner and the staff went above to make it happen for us. We were seated in a private banquet room on level 2 and it was 100% better than the restaurant

The rooms need some updating: the wood on the furniture and doors are chipping and worn

Eu gostei das instalações do hotel e da experiência!

Falta de preparo dos atendentes do hotel, por conta da neve a equipe ficou perdida, e no checkout nos deixaram com a mínima informação, não trabalharam nossas expectativas, demoraram para responder sobre a abertura das estradas e serviço de táxi, falam mal inglês, em suma, perdemos o nosso avião e transfer por total falta de coordenação da equipe, e sequer nos perguntaram se chegamos no nosso destino, pelo preço pago não vale este tratamento! Então se for para o hotel, tenha certeza da previsão do tempo, pois voce pode ter problemas!

Gora Katan is extremely satisfying. I want to visit again.

De aandacht van het personeel is echt top. Je krijgt een eigen gastvrouw die je diner en ontbijt komt reserveren op je kamer, en uitleg geeft over de kamer en haar faciliteiten. Onze Mei was een schatje die uitzonderlijk vriendelijk, behulpzaam en attent was. Wij hadden een mooie hele ruime kamer met een buiten bad wat heerlijk warm was en volledige privacy gaf.

Eigenlijk is alles fantastisch. Als er dan iets minder goed is, is dat kamer misschien qua stijl iets verouderd is.

Personeel was super vriendelijk. Het ontbijt was heel goed!

Voor wat je betaalt is het resort best verouderd. De douchekop was erg aan vervanging toe en de kranen buiten bij het bad ook. Verder zat je in het bad niet zo comfortabel omdat het heel hoekig was.

The facility was amazing but the food was better than the three Michelin star restaurant we had. Every staff member we encountered went above and beyond for us. They should be very proud of their world class service.

Exceptional. Once in a lifetime memory. The outdoor baths are a must. Yumi was the most gracious and kind attendant to our needs. The location/facility is unparalleled. Would return in a heartbeat.
