Loved the authenticity of the old hotel and how well it had been restored
Lighting in bedroom and bathrooms could be improved
Peacefulness and friendliness of the town
I felt special here. The staff were very attentive, the food was excellent, service exemplary … I considered never leaving.
Absolutely nothing unlikeable
The service was excellent as was the breakfasr
We had a garden room. Ours was the only one in the row that did not have a window which meant the room was very hot. Not only that but it was smaller than other garden rooms.
A very good breakfast included in the rate. Lots of choice. Dinner also good.
They are doing renovations and we would like to have been notified before hand.
A country hotel with lots of charm. Very comfortable
WiFi was terrible. Staff blamed the high winds but frankly, lack of WiFi unacceptable.
We had dinner at the hotel restaurant. We both ordered the "waterblommetjie bredie" which they didn't have. The same with the wine my husband ordered. As a second choice we had lamb shank. The taste was bland and served only with mash potato. Prices of both food and wine are on the steep side. The breakfast however was very good.
The history and the daycore
stepping into time amazing stay awesome views
nothing
Really enjoyed staying here again, it’s such a special place
Absolutely nothing
Location,staff,food and facilities
Our room had no ventilation and air con was set to heat rather than cool.We only saw instructions on how to change air con in the morning.
When arriving the general feel and look of the hotel with it's long verandah, rich wooden bar and tastefully decorated lounge area had a sophisticated colonial feel, which was what I was hoping for. The soft jazz music playing was very welcoming. The staff were friendly and the administration side of check in was easy. Our bed was comfortable and the room was a good size and clean. Breakfast was good. Loved the low door handles, representing true Royal etiquette.
No help with our bags were offered on check in and the only access from the front is by way of stairs. Had to drag our bags to our room through pebble stones. May have been an oversight as help was at hand on check out. Although the room was clean and comfortable, it lacked any decadence you would expect from a "Royal" Hotel. We wanted the full experience of the hotel so opted to eat dinner there. That was a HUGE disappointment. Lamps were all charging on the floor but not on the tables. There was little to no ambience, but more importantly the food was really not good. Sad as breakfast was not bad. In addition, the hotel is currently doing building extensions. New rooms being added so quite noisy constructed happening.
Ambiance, the old world charm mixed with modern convenience in a very well run hotel. We will be back.
Sometimes noisy reception echoing along the corridor to the rooms..
Everything!
Can put plunger coffee in the rooms. TV in the room was skew. Can put in different place to see the tv better.
Iconic hotel with wonderful history. Nestled in the middle of a very quaint town. Staff very friendly and helpful Accommodation was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very tasty and well prepared.
Filter coffee in the room. Parking is limited unless you park in the main road.
Friendly staff , lovely room , good food , loved the fireplaces
Coffee machine broken , aircon and safe faulty
Location is perfect, the decor and comfort in the rooms and the quality of the restaurant was excellent
Some renovations ongoing at the back…impacting the view of the mountain
My partner's dinner was apparently delicious. However, my dinner was really a disappointment, especially price wise.
There was no hairdryer in the room and there wasn't a tea/coffee station in the room. But if you wanted tea/coffee you could order it at any time of the day/night. They did serve tea between 4 and 5pm.
Excellent options for breakfast - you can decide whether you want freshly made scones or croissants or a full English breakfast with all the trimming. The staff were without exception, friendly, helpful and welcoming.
TV is a little erratic, but I understand that the entire valley experiences the same problem.
Location was perfect
Room had a monitor sized television that was positioned badly so not comfortable at all
The front-of-house staff were the nicest four ladies that seemed to work all the time. Early morning they are there with a smile and late evenings you see the same people. The breakfast was included and it was excellent. They were more than willing to alter meals for my vegan friend and everything was spot-on. Since it was winter, the fireplaces throughout the hotel were always burning, giving it a lovely cozy atmosphere!
Instant coffee in the room. Argh! No alcohol in the minibar: it's a mini-BAR after all?
Great
The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout the property. Very good breakfast and dinner.
The atmosphere; warm and cozy.. The food was good. Location is peefect.
NA
The breakfast pancake option was an absolute winner. Room was spacious. Staff had no problem to upgrade us to a bigger room with a view. The reception was very apologetic for the cold water and asked if they could give us a discount to make up for it. We declined as that was not why we mentioned it
The sensor for the light in the bathroom is not nice especially at night going to the bathroom everything is lit up. The unit was beautiful but previous guests definately smoked cigars in there which we did not appreciate. Next morning we did not have hot water at all in the bathroom.
It was very charming. The food was excellent.
A few things were not working - lights, no lotion in the lotion dispenser in the bathroom, not enough 2 prong outlets for charging phones/watches etc.
Friendly staff Good vibes Cozy lounge Nice food
Comes with the trademark of the hotel but the room was a bit older and felt a bit stuffy, nice bathroom though!
Gorgeous patio, location and charm
Breakfast
The Royal hotel is a classic in the Riebeeck Valley. Staff are friendly, location is great. Nice fireplaces in the lounge areas of the hotel. Food and drinks were also great
Only downside was that we booked a king suite which are a bit more expensive. Was a bit of a disappointment that we could not use the fireplace in the room. We stayed in these rooms before and was looking forward to using the fireplace but was told that it is not allowed anymore. The room also had a problem with ants. But that all said - we still had a great stay and will recommend it. We noticed that they are starting to clear an area in front of the existing rooms and were told that they are going to add additional rooms. Hope the owners will keep in mind that they shouldn't take the view away from the existing rooms.
Location was great. Rooms were comfortable and clean and set back from the road. Secure off street parking and breakfast staff service great. Old world charm and service.
Nothing
Wonderful staff. Good location and very clean, with comfy bed, pillows and good linen. The verandah provides a great spot to enjoy a drink and snacks, and it makes for an ideal stop-over spot.
In room facilities are minimal - no tea and coffee facility, hairdryer etc. The packed continental breakfast they provided for my early departure was not great, and definitely not recommended. However, the cappuccino ‘to go’ was really good.
Beautiful quaint hotel. Fantastic and friendly staff. Great food and an awesome bar.
Nothing.
Property shining Staff engaging Breakfast quality
All good
Frühstück und Lage ok
Abgewohnt und schäbig. Der Preis für diese Unterkunft ist viel zu hoch und nicht angemessen. Kein gesicherter Parkplatz
The location, the service
It was a bit outdated
Everything
Everything including superb breakfast @ afternoon tea
Absolutely nothing didn't like leaving
Beautiful hotel. Comfortable and friendly staff
Staff were all wonderful lovely pool superb dinner and breakfast
Nothing
A very special place with good food and a feeling of history
Charming ‘olde worlde’ feel.
Our room was a little dark with the doors closed and no window for air.
I had breakfast on the stoop. Great location to watch people from!
Lovely, quint hotel in the town centre of Riebeek-Kasteel. Lots of places to find a comfy spot: on the front terrace, inside lounge, cozy bar/restaurant, back terrace or the upstairs pool terrace. All beautifully decorated
Would prefer a larger bed.
Second time I’ve stayed with no problems
All good for one of the oldest hotels in Africa
Location, decor & very clean
We absolutely loved the combination of historic charm and modern comfort. The hotel’s beautifully restored colonial architecture and relaxed veranda create an inviting atmosphere right in the heart of Riebeek-Kasteel. Most of all, the friendly and attentive service made us feel genuinely welcome throughout our visit.
There was nothing to fault. The entire experience exceeded our expectations.
Perfect location. Beautiful hotel, well kept and friendly staff.
Nothing
The beautiful old property has a lot of potential, and is located in right the center of cosy Riebeek-Kasteel.
Poor value for money overall. A lot of things to be improved to move up from the current 3-star experience. Rooms are quite small, no coffee or tea facilities, no complimentary water provided, no hair dryer. Staff were friendly but rather reactive. Unclear where to park. No towels at the pool. Basically everything has to be asked before it will be provided.
The staff were very friendly but they might have been understaffed because the service was very slow at the restaurant.
There was no drinking water in the rooms.
Excellent! Thank You!
Mirror in the bedroom
Excellent service, incredibly friendly team.
WiFi was occasionally a little unpredictable.
The town and the people we visited
The room was on par with a third rate motel
Was very charming and the staff were accomodating.
They charge you for bottled water.
Authentieke sfeer.
De matrassen. Leek wel een waterbed.
The Royal Hotel is located on the main street and for a historic location we found the rooms to be well appointed and looked after. The veranda is perfect for cocktails, tea and meals - watching the world go by and meeting other guests. The staff were fantastic particularly as my Mum fell ill and needed a Dr which they sorted very quickly. The views out the back of the hotel are lovely and the various options for where you could eat or drink meant you could choose to be inside, outside out the front or out the back.
The number of stairs for the elderly or anyone with walking difficulties can be a challenge. I didn't ask for accomodation without stairs but will next time.
Lovely old property in an excellent location. Beautiful decor and gentle music playing. Huge garden rooms. Pretty pool area, lovely to relax. Good massage at little spa tent. Very nice staff, helpful and friendly
The food on a few occasions seemed re heated. But on other occasions it was lovely.
Prachtig gelegen oud-Victoriaans hotel in Riebeek Kasteel. Goede keuken.
Breakfast was delicious and staff is super friendly. Nice and central to quaint shops.
Pubs closing at 8 in the evening
EVERYTHING WAS GOOD
SHOWER WATER PRESSURE POOR
Great location
breakfast was good and location was very relaxing!
nothing
We stayed one night in this old style hotel and we were very impressed by how beautiful and charming it is. It is wonderful to sit on the outside terrace and enjoy a nice dinner and delicious breakfast, served by friendly staff! Definitely a place to come back to!
The hotel is an amazing experience, like stepping back in time. The breakfast was also exceptional. Staff were friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed the bar/restaurant.
Lovely stay in a historic hotel in the centre of Riebeek Kasteel. Room was comfortable, the food was tasty and cocktails on the historic verandah were a pleasure. The central location of the hotel allows you to explore a lot of the town on foot. There is a lot to see and do in and around Riebeek Kasteel.
Nothing
Old world charm with wonderful staff who are passionate about being a part of the Royal Hotel team. Amazing breakfast on the terrace.
A small gym would be great.
Excellent breakfast served at a convenient time and the fluffiest omelets served by friendly staff. All meals were delicious, well presented at various venues and reasonably priced. I stayed 2 nights longer than planned and really enjoyed the peace and quiet and tranquility of the environment. The staff was friendly and courteous, especially Petra at reception went out of her way to make my stay comfortable. I will definitely go back to the Royal Hotel.
The weather - it was uncomfortably hot during my stay - but fully air-conditioned rooms made up for that!
