Very clean comfortable hotel Lovely location Food excellent 👌 Staff very friendly and helpfull Great value for money
Small lift !
Great location easy to get too
Price could of been cheaper
Very clean and tidy Staff was really friendly and helpful Lots of banter with them
Double bed I think it was a small double
We didnt have breakfast. The girls on reception on the evening and morning were really friendly and helpful
It was really close to the noisy railway line. The bathroom was smelly when we checked in. The carpet had large water stains on it. The curtains had hooks missing. The carpets in the corridors haven't been changed since the radiators were changed so there are holes where the previous pipes came through. The really ugly "water feature" in the lounge next to the reception. The fact that they're isn't a swimming pool but it's shown in photos online.
Location, staff, layout of the hotel, bar prices were fair, although we didn't have the breakfast the price was fair..
The hotel needs a revamp for the cost paid. It needs a gardener.
Having a terrace was lovely, however the garden it looked out on not so much. It was nice to be out of the way, so nice and quiet.
The bathroom floor was spongey and made you feel like you were going to fall through. The gardens the terrace looked out on was unkept, there were random cups and other crockery dotted about which had been used as ash trays. We asked to be next to each other but we weren't, the whole hotel was very dated and in desperate need of updating.
Location
Run down, needs maintenance
Lovely place to stay
I liked everything
Comfortable accommodation
Not the Hotel fault but the diesel leak of the coach outside, these things happen.
Friendly staff at the reception and dog friendly hotel.
We stayed 2 nights and no one made up our room on our second day (so no clean towels). There was also a constant loud noise in the room, likely related to the water boiler.
All was fine
Ni issues
The property looked lovely from the outside and only 10 minutes walk to the beach Staff very friendly and helpful
Property was very tired and dated. No swimming pool any more, not enough plug sockets in room and no air con. Animals also allowed in rooms which I was not informed and there is a strong awful smell in the rooms and corridors- there should be set rooms for pets- dogs as I don’t have them and don’t want to smell wet dog in my room .
Location of the hotel
The showering in the bath was unsafe. The shower curtain pole fell off showering and caused me to cut my forearm against the soap dispenser. I reported this to staff and they changed my room but only after making a fuss. Also only a double electrical behind the television so was vey difficult to use ant electric devices especially the hair dryer
The check in was quick . The room was lovely had everything we needed . Location was excellent as we were attending scooter rally in Sandown . Price was very competitive and the hotel and grounds were stunning
Nothing
Staff friendly and keen to help Breakfast excellent
Evening meal options
Old world charm
Rigid bookings in time even though the room was available
The staff were friendly and efficient. The room was large and the grounds were very nice. Wifi was good
The parking was saved for coaches so I had to park under a tree and now car needs washing. The beds were hard. The room very hot. The bathroom extracter fan didn't work so bathroom smelt, the shower gell had run out and you had to book a table for dinner by 4.30 Bed side lights didn't work so only had main lights
The hotel grounds were stunning and very short walking distance from Sandown train station and beach great location.
Room extremely hot no air-conditioning no fan. Lift was very small fit for one or two people and not much else.
Helpful staff, good availability and pricing.
Outdated premises, could do with an upgrade.
Lovely the location. Has a lovely green space to take the dog
Plug sockets not next to the bed
Location
Bad entertainment. Room was dirty carpets and bathroom needs a lot of attention.
The Colleagues were really helpful and friendly
The room could of been a bit cleaner. there was a lot of dust on the surfaces
Lovely location with a beautiful outdoor area. The hotel isn’t super modern or newly renovated, but it’s still very nice, cosy and welcoming. The surroundings make it a really pleasant place to stay.
Unfortunately, we did get stuck in the lift during our stay. There were four of us, but we were still within the stated weight limit. It was a little scary, particularly as one person in our group struggles with claustrophobia. The team responded, and we were out within around 10 minutes. The gentleman who initially came to help was very polite and reassuring. Although it seemed to be the first time the team had dealt with this situation, we really appreciated their efforts to work out what to do and get us out safely. What disappointed us was the manager's reaction afterwards. She repeatedly said there was a sign stating that a maximum of three people were allowed in the lift, which made us feel as though the incident was our fault. We checked afterwards, and there was no such sign. Once we were out, one person in our group was laughing loudly because she was uncomfortable and trying to cope with the stress of having been trapped, but the manager's attitude made us feel almost as though we should apologise for what had happened. As the manager was leaving, I also heard her say that we had "ruined her day", which was particularly disappointing after we had just been stuck in the lift ourselves. Accidents and technical problems can happen, and we don't blame the team for the lift getting stuck. In fact, we were grateful that they managed to get us out quickly. It was simply the way the situation was handled afterwards that could have been much more understanding and reassuring towards guests. Aside from this incident, the rest of our stay was good, and the team were great.
Full of character the owner Elizabeth was lovely nothing was too much trouble room was big beds comfortable great breakfast options food was good.
Every thing was good
What really made our long weekend away was your receptionist Alison. She is so very happy and friendly with great local knowledge, it was a great surprise when she told us she has only been working at the Caledonian since March. She really is a credit to the hotel.
Nothing
Inside the hotel was clean and the room was clean including the bathroom
The shower ran hot and cold, couldn't get a constant temperature, Hotel grounds were a bit untidy and rough. Restaurant menu was okay but not impressive. The hotel seemed to be geared up for coach trips.
Staff very friendly..comfy clean beds and bedding ... staff sorted out broken hand rail in bath room very quickly . But great value for money
Very dated and scruffy rooms ....bar closes at 11. .sometimes did feel like a old person's home
Good location for near by towns Interesting looking building but tired in places
Luke warm welcome, find your own way to your room without directions Car park was full with random cones dotted around so not entirely clear where best to park Hotter than the sun in the rooms and no offers of a fan Tired building could use new carpets
Nothing except location
Not clean, no fans, no respect for request of rooms near each other
The entertainment!
The bedroom was very basic, the lights were poor, and the bed was quite uncomfortable. I thought the breakfast was very disappointing and I didn't enjoy it at all. There was the bare minimum in the room for a 3 star The chairs outside the "ballroom" on the patio were so uncomfortable as well. I'm sorry to say that as an Independent Travel Agent I will not be recommending this Hotel. A shame really, as it made the reason for coming to the IOW to surprise & celebrate my brother's birthday who lives in Ryde and my recent birthday a little bit shoddy.
There are bars and pubs walkable as well as the beach.
Rooms were very hot.
The hotel has a whiff of faded glory. Its in nice large grounds and seems to cater for the bus tour bingo crowdz but thats all good. Cant complain as it was good value and catered for our needs.as cycle tourists. One small thing, they dont have a bike store any more. Last time they did but it seemed to have asbestos so a danger.
Bed very comfy
The whole place is run down. Needs a good sort out, externally needs a decent clean up, fag ends and weeds everywhere. All plants that have dried out and died should’ve been removed. Gardener blamed squirrels for the mess (and fag ends???). Like walking back to Kate 79’s early 80’s. Weak shower. Cleaners missed us one day out of 3 for some reason. Charged extra for our dog then made to breakfast in a ballroom all on our own because we had a dog! Not that dog friendly.
A classic building, gorgeous garden, great parking, friendly staff and clean comfortable room. Particularly loved being on the ground floor, as we had our little dog with us. Loved swimming in the sea.
All good.
Near tourist attractions
Bathroom facility is not that nice and room seems old.
Rooms a good size with nice view over countryside. Good bathroom accomodation. Outside areas nice for sun or shade. Plenty of indoor seating. 10 minute walk to beach but quiet hilly.
Poor breakfast for relatively high price for what was on offer. No fresh fruit, yogurts or pastries. Just english cooked breakfast and two types of cereal.Had to ask for brown bread and eggs other than scrambled. Very busy in dining hall at breakfast due to high number of guests on coach parties. Breakfast only available 7.30 - 9am as mainly catering for coach parties leaving at 9am. Would have liked a quieter, less crowded breakfast and as on holiday later breakfast at least until 9.30. We therefore went for breakfast elsewhere after first day.
Nothing
Most of it
Beautiful building and grounds, feels historic and special! Huge room with bay window. Very efficient reception
Walls a bit thin
It has an impressive outside and great location
But the rooms look nothing like the pictures, it smells funny in the hall, we wanted a terrace room but could lot use our terrace due to the dog pooh left all over by the guests in the next rooms dog, who spent most of their time standing outside our room with their dog. The bathroom was cracked and poorly decorated, the mattress was lumpy and broken and it’s just really run down which is a shame as it has the potential to be stunning, my feeling is they have refurbished 1-2 rooms for photos but non of the others
Locality for our touring of the island, along with the location to the esplanade. Free parking with CCTV within the hotel grounds
Room was small, with very basic facilities, without even having a night stand beside the bed. Bathroom was very small and in need of a complete upgrade / update. Carpets in the public area of the hotel leading to the rooms looked grubby were stained and threadbare in places. Windows within corridors required cleaning!! A hotel relying on the sister company coach tours for most of its clientele - restaurant was already closed at 20:30 when we booked in. Advertised and priced as a three star hotel but in reality barely managed a 2 star rating in our opinion.
Rooms were big and maintained well. Staffs are polite. Bathroom was really clean and tidy. Total value for money.
We booked 3 family rooms and unfortunately all 3 were on different sides.
Good location, clean , friendly staff and room was good size, clean and outside access for our dog which was arranged by the receptionist
Breakfast was limited in cereals and no pastry’s
Lovely hotel
Nothing
Space and size of the Hotel
Pool was filled in.
The garden grounds
Very outdated, lack of facilities & cleanliness. No early check in which ruined our travel plans & no response from the hotel + Forced early check out (10:00). Room very dated, terrible lighting, and bed extremely uncomfortable and small. No fridge, USB plugs etc.
Was clean
Bed was rock hard - very noisey
Very nice people,nice food
Maybe could do with a little refresh
Location not the best but passable.
Hotel could do with some improvement.
everything, the building and the gardens were beautiful, staff friendly, location was fantastic
not being able to fully open the windows
As ever I keep returning to my favourite place to stay, beautiful views of the land and only 10minute walk to the beach. Hotel staff are wonderful and its fully disabled place to stay. They are definitely 10 0ut of 10. Feels like family
Only one window was possible to open, very very hot room 🥵🥵
Too hot 🔥
Perfect Location with parking. Buffet style breakfast good.
No fan nor aircon in the room, especially in this weather. The toilet window not with opening options. You can't open window in the toilet.
It was in a good location with parking. The staff were friendly and helpful
The bed was old and not that comfortable. There was no air conditioning or fans in the room so it was very hot. Lots of noise from other guests later at night or early in the morning
Having our terraced room and the staff was so lovely and polite.
The meals was way to expensive for the food was like. The French onion soup was over salty, the spaghetti bolognaise was nice but could of had more cheese. And the worst was the scrambled eggs. They were to watery, no butter and so bland. Also the sausages were overdone and I almost choked on one. I location was beautiful but the carparking, wasn't organised for guests with cars and they let the coaches park more than the people with cars. Also a ramp for the main entrance would of been better for suitcases. It killed me.
Friendly and clean
Food was exspensive for what you got.
It was nice that there was entertainment and that people sat in the communial areas made it feel welcoming. The gardens were lovely to sit in of an evening. Was great that my medication could be stored in the fridge.
The lack of clear signage for the lifts as my elderly aunt got disorientated. The rooms could use air-con. Windows were screwed shut so suffered with the heat. One of the handles on a window was broken so could not shut it during the day.
The location was just great. 12mins walk from the beach. Super easy.
It was quite small room. We had no AC or even fan offered. Traveled with the dog however we were given a room on the third floor. It was not great considering that dog needs several walks. Especially in the morning.
A pleasant hotel , slightly out dated but this adds to it's charm. All the staff where helpful. The grounds could do with some maintenance.
The breakfast was poor. We didn't see any Red Squirrels 😞
Location , big rooms , staff friendly and accommodating, helpful . Dog friendly .. grounds lovely
Carpark was restricted with coaches which took up most of carpark & spaces . Breakfasts was passable but cooked breakfast, mostly cold breakfast times too early , so you could not have a lay in . . Had to book evening meal , at breakafast ,but didnt eat evening meal .so eat elsewhere . Hotel needs revamp, tlc , tired , looking . but has got character . Noisy with people slamming doors , no sound proof . Shower water like luke warm Lift you can manage to get two people in with 2x suitcases , small .
Location was great. Set in nice well presented grounds.
Very noisy night , walls were so thin you could hear everything from other rooms - taps running , people snoring , footsteps and moving furntiure about. Led to a very restless night
Lovely Grounds. Short walk into Town, the Railway Station and Bus stops and of course the beach.
Lokalizacja i otoczenie hotelu.
Brak nawet zwykłego wiatraka w pokoju. Duszno w pokojach.Brak najzwyklejszej jednorazowej kawy za to cukru było aż nadto.Pod marką the Broadway Hotel było lepiej.
Loved it as always.
The hotel was very nice
Nothing
Staff were great, rooms were nice.
Parking is horrendous with most of the already limited parking coned off for coach access.
We've stayed here several times before the new company took over. I'm pleased that it's just as nice. It may not be fancy but it's convenient, comfortable and has parking.
Unfortunately, the roofs of the garden loggia were removed. It added an extra Mediterranean flair to the gardens.
Pet friendly, member of staff on reception was super friendly and welcoming
Great location and lovely helpful staff, beautiful garden and is close to a lovely beach and amenities
The Caledonian Hotel provided my wife and I with a very reasonably priced double room for four nights while we visited the Isle of Wight Music Festival. It was very close to Sandown Train Station, and was also in close proximity to the Island Bus Routes to Newport. The staff we engaged with were very nice.
The Caledonian Hotel is set up more for Senior Citizen Coach Parties. Breakfast was served from 07.30 to 09.00, with the last sitting being at 08.45, this is not ideal if you wanted a lay in after being at a Festival. The hotel looks tired in places, holes in the carpet everywhere after the heating was replaced. No Service after 23.00, even for water.
Great location
No air con or fans room was like an oven
Spacious bedroom and the gardens.
Needs updating. Food wasn’t great. Poor choices for breakfast. Needs a selection of fruit, yogurts or pastries. Not very many options if you don’t fancy a cooked breakfast.
Outside building
The staff were nowhere to be seen, the property is very outdated and the facilities need renovation
Retro live music the night I stayed
Extremely thin walls and lots of creaking floorboards. You can hear every single movement and sound from all directions around you. Impossible to sleep past 6 or 7am when other guests are awake. There were also bugs and spiders in our room.
Location
Room was not cleaned through out stay. Bathroom door would not close, although maintenance sorted that out on second day.
The staff were super helpful. I rang to explain we needed to check In a bit early as we were going to the IOW festival and would be back really late. No problem at all. The room was lovely. Really nice shower and it was very quiet. All very good value for money. Highly recommend
Nothing
Helpful staff, relaxing, and accommodated our needs
The beds were reasonably comfortable.
The facilities were disappointing overall. If you are claustrophobic, be aware that the lift is extremely small and outdated, so you may prefer to use the stairs. On our first day, when we entered our room, we found the toilet in a terrible condition. It appeared that a previous guest had suffered from diarrhoea, and the toilet had not been properly cleaned. I immediately reported this to reception. The receptionist informed me that someone would attend to it the following morning, which meant they expected us to use the toilet in that state overnight. This was unacceptable and very disappointing. The next morning, I spoke to the manager, who assured me that someone would be sent immediately. We then went out for the day. However, when we returned that evening, the toilet still had not been cleaned. I went back to reception for a third time and spoke to a lovely member of staff with reddish tint in blonde hair whose name I unfortunately cannot remember. I asked her to come to the room and see the condition of the toilet for herself. She did, and she kindly offered to clean it herself. I am very grateful to her for resolving the issue. While I appreciate her efforts, the overall handling of this situation was extremely poor. I was very disappointed with the hotel’s standards of cleanliness and customer service, and I would not stay here again.
Family Room is super and on the ground floor you are able to sit outside your patio doors. Breakfast and dinner were excellent with good choices.
Liked everything
Friendly staff, they were lovely
Apparently refurbished but was dated and some communal carpets were quite thin. Breakfast had limited options and not great quality (I did enjoy the tinned tomatoes though that you don’t often get in places!) (we paid separately not part of a package)
Room clean and tidy. Location great as a base to travel. Breakfast very good. Free WiFi.
No plug sockets close to the bed (both sides) for use.
Location great. Hotel tired in a lot of places and needs money spending on it but overall good value for money.
Just needs updating eg carpets in rooms and windows (old rusty handles). Whitecliff Bay is mentioned but if you have e dog then Yaverland is the best beach for dig walking/playing/swimming on the island. Another reason I have stayed at this hotel 5 times and Yaverland only 3 minutes in the car
Surprisingly good for the price. Comfortable room, great facilities, lovely staff.
It was a warm weekend, AC in the rooms would have been nice but for how much we paid, not a big deal.
Properties a very nice looking building. Late night entertainment.
Beds are terrible, woke up 2 nights with severe back pain. Had to ask for a second pillow since there wasn’t one in the room. No fridge, room was quite small. No table as per the image. Being the youngest couple here we got some funny looks off the manager. Parking is terrible as they park 4 of their coaches in the middle of the car park. Over 100 rooms and parking for about 15 cars. Doors are very thin and only have Yale locks. Rattles in the wind. You can hear everything in the hall way since doors are so thin and not tight fitting like more upper class hotels. Couldn’t find pool table. Rooms are very dated. Plugs behind the bed prevented being able to charge your phone on the side of the bed. No phone in the room. Overall this hotel needs a make over.
We came last year and decided to return, felt at home here. Lovely garden to sit in, comfortable, clean room, although there were coach parties there and entertainment in the bar the noise didn’t travel upstairs. The lift was working. The staff were really nice.
We stayed at the hotel about 12 years ago and it was amazing. We decided to stay again but the hotel looked tiered, the sitting area was ok but the seating was dated and worn, the entertainment was awful. Seemed to cater for the older generation with I am part of.
We felt the property needs updating. The bedrooms were clean and tidy but again needed updating. The yard where the swimming pool once was, was shabby with dog ends on the floor. The gardens also were not as good as before.
All round lovely
A bit dirty in the rooms
Lovely grounds. Car park is a necessity with such limited on street parking. Easy access to local beach and amenities. All round good value for the price
Great location in sandown iow we didn't use any facilities as we were out travelling around all the time
N/a
Nice Hotel but very dated, they are starting to refurbish the rooms. The staff were very friendly, especially Les one of the managers. Entertainment was ok but a bit like Butlins in the 1970s
Breakfast very limited, you have to ask for fried eggs, and not really very good. Bar closes at 11pm even for residents WiFi was very poor and no usb sockets anywhere
It was just lovely
Nothing to say
Comfortable, well maintained property with good sized rooms and helpful staff in a convenient location.
Great value for money. Large bedroom with comfortable bed and pillows. Decent size bathroom with walk in shower and plenty of hot water. Short walk to the seafront and pier.
Breakfast was a bit disappointing. Reasonable selection of hot breakfast but no fresh fruit or pastries.
Ellie on reception was lovely
Threadbare carpets, a bed that was obviously on sloping floorboards so I fell out of bed four times in a week
Excellent service and great experience
Nice clean rooms , nice outdoor spaces to have a drink in the good weather especially the Rose Garden. Nice entertainment in the evenings
The breakfast on display needed looking at . You had to ask for other options , like having to ask for omelette or fried eggs. Guests might think what was out was all what was available. But staff were very helpful
