Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Great location. It's a lovely old building, with a superb view from our room. Very helpful staff. Great price for just one night.
Didn’t have breakfast at hotel because hadn’t ordered it, but plenty of places to eat in main street. Hotel had character. Position in Lynton nicely central. Single rooms had been booked, but changed to doubles on arrival with no trouble and not much more charge.
Booking.com should have pointed out that parking at the hotel needed to be reserved when making the booking.
The victorian charme of the building is something special. The room was practical and had everything you needed. The staff was nice and breakfast was offered to be booked for the next morning
They have a dog friendly policy which is nice, unfortunately one of the dogs barked through the night (which is not the properties fault). Some more information to find the room behind several unmarked doors and corridors would have been helpful.
Loved the victorian vibe.. what a beautiful building! staff very polite and helpful, lovely view, nice clean room, lovely lounge area for evening socialising, great to have onsite parking.
Bed pretty uncomfortable, parts of property very tired and indeed of refurbishment (including the room), taps in bathroom not great, smelled a bit stale in places in corridors. We were told a refurbishment is pending which we knew before we stayed. We hope that all the beautiful Victorian features with be maintained.
The hotel was an old large Victorian Hotel, the architecture features were beautiful, it is old though and at the start of being updated. The lounge was huge and we felt very comfortable spending evenings there with friends - a piano and ALEXA available for music. The staff were excellent, very helpful and cheery.
Our room was huge but the sash windows had been screwed shut, so we couldn't open the windows even slightly. The bed and wash facilities were very clean but grime around window frames and shower framework were ingrained- needing the upgrade. Breakfast is only available at weekends and no evening dining- but plenty of cafes / restaurants / pubs easy walking distance
Great central location
Had a sea view
Great location, lovely old building, and great value for money.
Some maintenance issues, but this is reflected in the low cost of the stay even during peak season.
Location
.
Great location with lots to explore in the area. Really friendly and helpful staff. We had one of the rooms on the top floor which had really nice views over the surrounding coastline.
Location...supurb
Nice and quiet. Friendly atmosphere.
Location and staff are great.
Was filthy and the water pressure was lower than a watering can.
Location excellent. Room ok. Didn’t have breakfast. Great view from bedroom window.
No hot water late afternoon evening. Heated towel rail not working. Room quite tired ready for refresh and maintenance. Very limited parking.
It looked unique and interesting. Location very good for what I wanted.
My room was definitely past its sell- by date. Servicing of rooms not carried out unless requested but this isn’t publicised. No restaurant or bar. Very limited parking.
very nice breakfast. friendly staff. had some good chats. fab location.
car parking. id booked 2 weeks earlier. when we got to reception there was no record of the pre booking, which was annoying. however we managed to sort it at the front desk, but there is a bit of a communication issue with whoever takes the bookings. we were also disappointed that there was no evening meal option.
Lage zentral.
Very convenient for wedding in Lynton

Staff
Dirty bed sheets, stains in the floor, mould and damp on the walls, windows shaking all night sounded like fireworks, mugs were dirty hair in the bath, hair on our pillows. Endless list really
Just the staff and the location is the only good thing .
An Unforgettable Stay: If you love a worn-out hotel, zero phones in the rooms or at reception to call for help, and escaping your room through a first-floor window then this place is for you! The Good: The location is brilliant with stunning sea views. A massive shoutout to Jock, who was an absolute legend. He was exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout my stay. The Drama: Unfortunately, things took a wild turn shortly after. When I tried to leave the room to grab some drinks, the door became completely jammed and wouldn't open. To make matters worse, I didn't have my mobile phone on me, and there were no phones in the room or reception to call for help! After shouting and knocking for 20 minutes with no rescue in sight—and with the door handle snapping off in my hand from pulling so hard—I had to take extreme measures. Being on the first floor, I forced a very heavy window open just enough to squeeze through, drop safely to the ground without breaking my legs and walk around to the restaurant glass to get Jock's attention. When Jock came to check, even he couldn't open it from the outside and had to forcefully break the door open. It turned out a loose screw had slipped inside and completely jammed the mechanism! The Resolution: I understandably didn't want to stay in that room anymore, and Jock was kind enough to move me to another room where I finally settled for the rest of the trip (though the window panes in that room were filthy, too). The Verdict: If you want a fantastic location with staff who will genuinely go above and beyond (thank you again, Jock!), this place has potential. But getting locked in a room with no phone and having to escape out a first-floor window is an experience I won't forget in a hurry! Great service under pressure, but maintenance and room upkeep definitely need urgent attention. I'd have to think twice before staying here again.
Staff are friendly and helpful.
The Bar wasn't open and the restaurant was closed, so no breakfasts.
Beautiful building, very grand Friendly staff Low touch, get your keys and look after yourself Comfortable room, basic but nice Insanely cheap Fantastic location
There is no breakfast until the weekend and then only pre booked. This suggests the hotel struggles with occupancy. It's really rustic, which is what I like.
Superb view
Nothing
Receptionist on arrival was a lovely person and very helpful
Great staff, service, location and value for money
Schöne Lage und tolle Geschichte des Hotels.Nettes Personal.
Location
Cold shower. Very thin walls, noisy above and next to us
Great location and large room
Nothing negative
You just can’t beat the location it is absolutely perfect. The large double bedroom was spacious with a wonderful view outside the window. The shower was lovely. The hotel has a lift which was good as my husband has issues with his balance. All the staff in the hotel were pleasant. The lounge and Dinningroom are tastefully decorated.
Found a hair in my cooked breakfast 🤮 the bedroom windows do not open. We found the lounge draughty in the evening while we were watching the evening entertainment. Fortunately the weather wasn’t too bad but reading through previous reviews I would avoid staying in this hotel during the colder months. Lack of parking is an issue even for blue badge holders, and as the hotel only has 6 parking spaces that need to be booked well in advance. Paid parking is available but costs £14 per day. Although we were aware food was not available from the hotel (breakfast is served Fri - Mon) we were not prepared for the expensive cost of eating out and will probably stay in self catering accommodation when we return to Lynton & Lynmouth. The carpet in the bedroom needs replacing and there was a fair amount of dirt on the edges of the carpet on the skirting board under the windows and on the window sill/bay windows. Being a very old building the floor is creaky when to walk on it and my husband and I were woken at 5.45am by hotel guests walking around in the adjoining room on our first morning. If you have a maintenance issue or query regarding breakfast times after 9pm and don’t want to leave your bedroom to speak to the receptionist you can ring the hotel contact phone number however you speak to people who appear to know very little about the hotel so phone calls are outsourced to an agency that are probably not even situated on the UK & possibly not even the UK. I was advised parking nearby would cost £3 per day & a gentleman manning the reception desk the next day advised me that “these people know nothing about the hotel even booking 10 parking spaces when the hotel only has 6 parking spaces”. After discovering a hair in my breakfast & I rang the contact number to cancel breakfast & was advised that they would contact the receptionist at the hotel and send me a WhatsApp message. No text was ever received.
Cost was good value. Location was good and easy to find.
Parking is very hard. Had to kneel down in tub to shower and no shower curtain. No breakfast on offer.
Substantial building. Great location. Lots of original features. Breakfast lovely. Staff exceptional and very friendly. There are a few extras to pay for, parking & breakfast, but the room rates are so good it’s worth it.
Nothing to dislike.
The location, the architecture and the price.
Perhaps there was an air of faded glory about the place.
Friendly staff.and great location for SW Coast Path. Good breakfast
The building is very old but beautiful inside and interesting
Nothing really
Great location and very good value.
It looked nice from the outside and nice gardens
It is dirty tired in desperate need of updating, we left early as too uncomfortable to stay on the rock hard beds! And moody shower meant couldn’t get a shower either
Beautiful hotel, period building and features. Comfortable beds, hot shower, tea and coffee making facilities. It is a little tired and could be really grand if the expense was made, but it is very clean and well maintained by staff, and is perfect for a comfortable stay. The hotel is on the main high steet with easy access to all of the amenities Lynton has to offer. The cliff railway is just around the corner. Plenty of café's, pubs and restaurant to choose from and easy access to Lynmouth via a pathway behind the hotel or the cliff railway (if you do not want to drive). National Trust Watersmeet is located in Lynmouth and is a good hike through woodland following the river.
Dog friendly, great location with amazing views.
Very welcoming and helpful staff. Large comfortable room and bathroom. Hot water. Good shower. Dogs made welcome. Car park was very useful but normally needs to be booked in advance for £6 per day. Good locality with a range of restaurants. Beautiful walking country nearby.
For us a mini fridge would have been a bonus as we had dog food with us and were staying 3 days.
Spacious room with a good view. Central location in Lynton close to everything.
I would not put any guests of mine up in the room we had. The shower doesn't work properly because the hose has a kink , the shower tray is cracked and the soap dispenser broken. The curtains are not put up fully but left as if someone had started hanging them and walked away. The bathroom window is cracked and doesn't close, meaning the bathroom door rattles all night if there's wind. There was a strange brown stain on the end of the bedding. It's room 80, one of the supposedly superior ones and it could be so nice with just some basic maintenance and attention. On arrival we were "greeted" by a very abrasive member of hotel staff and received the opposite of courteous customer service. We had made a genuine mistake about the parking. I'm sure this happens often as Booking.com suggests there is parking and it is not at all clear you have to pre book it. She spoke to us in a way which upset us and got our stay off to a bad start, including directing us to the wrong floor. Other staff members seemed very pleasant. The hotel could be so beautiful but desperately needs investment. By the time you have added parking fees and breakfast each day it isn't even a particularly cheap option.
The Location
Poor state of the sink, lock on the door didn’t work, windows were filthy and about an inch of bird poo outside our window,no charging points, shower gel container was empty when I checked in and had to ask for more.
Disgusting dirty filthy room dust and dirt an inch thick. Live wires exposed hair clogging the plug holes. And receipts 9 years old found under the bed Awe
Dirty filthy rooms dust and hair an inch thick on skirting boards and under beds. Hair clogs plug holes.
Had everything I needed and was comfortable.
Wasn’t very clear the way to my room, I could hear people late at night trying to figure the room system out. Could do with another sign. Otherwise it was good.
Lovely hotel, excellent breakfast and the staff couldn’t have been any more helpful
The room was lovely, the location was very convenient the little town was beautiful
We only stayed one night as it was a passing through place but we wanted to stay longer.
Best view ever from a hotel room, over the church and bay. Obviously this will depend on your room. Spotless rooms. Truly historic Victorian grand hotel.
Dated, small rooms. Hotel needs a reno but I was happily surprised, other reviews are excessively critical.
Fantastic old hotel and really friendly staff
Really nice relaxing stay again.
No bar available but new in advance so not a problem.
Location was perfect
Room small Breakfast not worth the money
Location Value
Walked in 3 times staff non existent on the reception. Anyone could walk in so easily. Dog barking for hours
Schönes Hotel, perfekte Lage, herrlicher Blick aufs Meer, bequeme Betten; unbedingt den Wanderweg an der Küste genießen, 20 min vom Hotel entfernt und unvergesslich.
The area around and large hall with the beautiful view.
Everything fine during the stay.
I love Lynton and Lynmouth. My room was perfect and a nice hot shower. Everything easily accessible to me with some lovely restaurants and pubs.
The place I wanted to see most unfortunately closed but that's nothing to do with the hotel which was excellent. Will be back again.
Value for money very friendly staff, good size room, fantastic location
Needs to mention that there was limited parking and to book prior! Needs a bigger tv in the room, and locks on the bathroom door
Situated right in the middle of The village and next to the scenic railway. The hotel does have a lift and there is some street parking, which is free after 4pm plus a small carpark at rear (you’ll get a park). Grand 200 year old hotel, so dial back your expectations. Some rooms need a freshen up and the water pressure is a bit slow, but overall we enjoyed our stay… and would stay again.

Great location close to SWCP, room had everything you needed.
The hotel in general is run down. The towel rail in the bathroom was held together with tape and the window made a horrible rattling noise. There were some other hotel residents who had clearly been drinking and didn’t consider other guests. As a hiker I would stay here again.
N/A
Toiletries were not nice and hard to get out of dispenser
Location
Restrictions on windows not good in hot weather
Perfect location. Wonderful Victorian facade. Great staff.
Needs a bit of general attention and maintenance, nothing major.
In center of village
The hotel could do with some atmospheric injection ,beautiful building but needs life maybe sell to someone with money and change the concept of hotel ,as its a brilliant location and great venue for all sorts
excellent. i like coz its old but preserved.
nothing at all.
Great location, super views. Friendly staff.
Nothing.
Room was clean, Easy access to the shops.
Plug sockets for kettle did not work. Towl heater not working. Only one spare pillow for two beds Poor grumpy welcome No double bed as requested. No parking except a public parking.
große Zimmer- tolle Lage
Faded Glory…such potential
External surfaces very dirty.
Location was good, on site parking, breakfast(but only twice a week)
Not enough breakfast No open bar No evening dining No Atmosphere
Customer care and good location.
Quilt was not very clean…there was black stains somewhere.
Room was tired but fine. Shower was just about passable. It was to be honest a really pale reflection of what was a grand hotel but it has its own charm just a shame it is run by such a skeleton staff.
As customers you are made to feel like an inconvenience. It is a big hotel and doesn't have a bar or somewhere to socialise in the evening.
Trevlig och hjälpsam personal. Vackert gammalt hus.
Lovely big building with unbeatable views from our bedroom. The staff was amazing throughout are stay, especially Rachel she was just super friendly from the second we got there until we left and she just added that little something special to the trip so thank you. The views are just so good and bed and bedroom was huge and very clean. The value for money is just outstanding and we 1 million percent will be returning again. This was our 4th time staying in Lynton and Lynmouth but first time staying at the Valley of rocks. We will be coming back again for sure. All in an amazing trip with amazing staff. Great value for money so don’t miss out.
Certain parts could do with some TLC but nothing too major.
Very nice building from the outside. The staff helped us with parking in town. Not too expensive.
No breakfast available (despite being advertised on booking.com), no bar either. (Neither was available.) Even though it says on their booking.com page that they provide parking for guests, they only have 6 (!) parking spaces for guest vehicles - despite the fact that they have over 50 rooms in the hotel. We did not reserve a parking space in advance (this info is mentoned in the very small print part), and so they had no spaces left for us. This misleading info gave us some headache, as parking on site was very important to us when we made the booking.
Great location Didn"t have breakfast or food at hotel
Lack of parking
We spent a long weekend here last week. What an amazing time. The views from our room were just unbeatable and great to wake up to with a morning brew. The staff made the stay and just added to that amazing experience. Especially Rachel who was just warm and friendly from the offset to us leaving and just made our stay extra special. She’s an absolute credit. Building itself it lovely and a fantastic location and couldn’t be better really. Room itself was lovely, great size with huge bathroom and was clean and comfy. Me and my wife had an amazing time and will 100 percent be coming back again. It is also fantastic value for money.
Bella struttura in uno stile d'altri tempi.
Amazing hotel with a stunning view and wonderful staff I absolutely loved this hotel! Yes, it is an older hotel, but that is actually a big part of its charm. As soon as you walk in, it has such a special atmosphere — the beautiful old interior and the huge wooden staircase really impressed me. The view from our room was absolutely stunning. We could see the sea and the hills, and it was honestly one of the best parts of our stay. I’ve attached photos because the view really speaks for itself! Our room was a great size, very clean and comfortable. The bed was comfortable, the shower was great, and I really liked that we could open the window. It wasn't too hot at night, so we slept very well. The staff were extremely polite, friendly and helpful. A special thank you to the lovely lady at reception who welcomed us so warmly. Check-in was very easy, and she told us a little about the history of the hotel, including that it dates back to 1808. She also gave us great advice about where we could have dinner, what places closed earlier and what was still open. She was genuinely happy to help with everything and made us feel very welcome. I also want to thank her for giving us such a wonderful room with that incredible view. It really made our stay special. Overall, we had a fantastic stay and I really loved this hotel. It has so much character and atmosphere. If we come back to Lynton, I would 100% choose this hotel again.
The only negative: The bed sheets really need replacing. They were quite old and covered in little fabric bobbles, which made them feel very rough, almost like sleeping on sand. If you sleep in pyjamas, it’s okay, but with bare skin it is quite uncomfortable. New, smoother sheets would make the stay absolutely perfect.
"You get what you payd for", war die Antwort.
Location
Run down but lcearly being worked on.
Nice friendly staff
The small room was very small so we spoke to the guy behing the desk and paid ana mount to get a family room. What a difference! It was huge. They were really helpful, always happy and and available.
If they spent some money on this place it could be the heart of the town.
Lovely old building. Good views from the grounds at the back.
No parking unless you book (room for 6 cars only) not made clear in description. Room not particularly clean. Base of bed broken resulting in mattress sinking and causing my husband to roll to one side. Noise from a fan below and sudden load bangs. Lamp on one side of bed only. A bar which doesn't open, apparently due to owner being Muslim? No restaurant. Such a shame that the lovely rooms with seating are not really being used. There's even a dance floor. Sad.
Breakfast was very good and location was perfect
There was no problems
Great location with friendly staff. Good value.
The property clearly needs updating. For such a grand building the interior doesn’t quite live up to its past.
Velmi prostorný pokoj s krásným výhledem. Hotel s výjimečnou atmosférou. Perfektní lokalita. Milý personál.
The old hotel was lovely. It’s old character. The old decor in the lounge. The lovely brick work of the building. Fantastic views
I missed small print in parting. Floor in room was loose near bathroom. I also miss understood there was no breakfast
Location was great. Didn't have breakfast.
The bed was quite hard. The room needed updating.
Sehr schöne Lage. Große Zimmer mit viel Platz. Frühstück relativ günstig und gut. Sehr freundliche Rezeption.
Ausstattung teilweise sehr alt und heruntergekommen (z.B. Abfluss in unserer Dusche war sehr sehr langsam).
God engelsk frokost.
Ingen muligheter for utlufting.
Kind staffing, great location, wonderful property. Very comfortable.
