Truly incredible hotel in a historical building. Looking back, I believe this to be one of the truest 10/10 stays in my life. The room is beautiful and comfortable. The hot baths are beautiful (I was lucky enough to be able to experience both open air baths when it was raining… absolutely magical). All amenities are provided and thought of before you know you need them. However, what made this truly unforgettable was the japanese garden (one of the most beautiful I’ve seen thus far in Japan) and the staff who were always waiting with a smile, an umbrella and a polite bow. I pray I’ll be lucky enough to experience the magic of Yudaonsen and Matsudaya again in my lifetime.

古い建物だからか、壁が薄く廊下への音漏れ、隣の部屋の会話の声が非常に気になりました。

Very traditional hotel with a beautiful garden and great location. Stepping into this hotel felt like we were transported back in time and seeing the garden accessible from our room made it even more special. The food was also fantastic with very high quality omakase courses. The staff were super friendly and helpful which made the hotel very welcoming. We absolutely loved our stay.

Matsudaya er et fantastisk gammelt hotel centralt i Yamaguchi. Der er en smuk have hvor man kan fodre koi fisk. Der er onsen og familierum i onsen. Dejlig traditionel japansk morgenmad.

Personalet tager ens sko når man kommer ind og man skal vente på at få dem udleveret når man forlader hotellet.

障子窓で、開けたら屋根瓦しか見えず、これはブッキングドットコムでやすい宿泊費だったから、あてられた部屋かと不愉快になった。

O hotel é incrível, no estilo japonês, com um espaço excelente e atendimento exemplar. Sem dúvida, um dos hotéis mais organizados e bonitos em que já fiquei. Mas é importante frisar que se trata de um hotel no estilo japonês; por isso, até o café é bem tradicional. Aliás, não tem café, mas sim chá.

Infelizmente, o sistema de ar não gelava. Eles inverteram para aquecer e isso era um problema, pois eu gosto de dormir num quarto mais gelado. O café da manhã é bem tradicional japonês, e eu senti falta de um estilo mais ocidental, mas nada que desabone a experiência.

Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff who did everything to make us feel very welcome. We had to adjust to having everything done for, the room and garden were exceptional and the staff did everything to make us feel very relaxed. The food at the hotel and around were delicious with lots of local delicacies. There is enough to do around yamaguchi so you don't get bored, however you are mostly at this hotel to relax and get away from the business of Japan.

If the weather is bad, you are limited in your options as the beautiful scenery and garden won't be as accessible.

先ずホテルを入る門から趣と風格が有り、館内も落ち着いた調度品と行き届いたスタッフのおもてなしに感動しました。 河豚ずくしのお料理、お給仕して頂いたスタッフの楽しい雰囲気作り、幕末資料館や日本庭園など歴史と重みを感じる展示施設の数々。お風呂が６カ所も有り、予約不要の家族風呂が２か所も有り、文句なしに素晴らしい滞在になりました。 今回、母の長寿祝いの為の利用でしたが、母からも素敵なホテルを手配してくれてありがとう。とお礼を言われ松田屋ホテルを利用してよかったと思います。

特に有りません。強いて言えば、建物の構造が複雑で自分が何処をどちらに歩いているのか分からなくなる事が有りましたので館内案内を分かり易くして頂けたらもっと良かったです。

温泉、食事、部屋全て、庭園全て大変素晴らしかったです。

Lovely hotel The private Onsen was a big plus

高齢の家族や乳児を連れての宿泊でしたが、事前にお願いしていたリクエストに最大限ご配慮いただき、安心して滞在することができました。観光スポットやお土産についても丁寧にアドバイスをいただき、とても参考になりました。お料理は量も十分で大変満足でき、客室も清潔で気持ちよく過ごせました。

共用部分にはやや年季を感じるところがありました。また、客室に緑茶だけでなくコーヒーもあるとさらに嬉しいと感じました。

あの、倒幕維新を成し遂げた時代の英雄達ここに集う。 まさに、うねりの歴史が始まろうとするその一コマを言葉では表せないずっしりとした風情を感じぜずにはいられない…この宿のひと時であった。 当地出身の私とすれば、是非多くの方々に身を持って感じて欲しい場所である。 気づけば爽やかな晴天の早朝、…思わずありがとう歴史旅館と呟きながら豪勢な門を出る。　　　　　　2026-2-23

敢えて申せば、少しばかり高級感を控えめに…が欲しい処である。 出過ぎた感想は、年老いた者のじゃれごととして…身を伏してご勘弁を。

The Dinner set is fantastic. I tried the puffer fish for the first time here!!

We were welcomed with matcha and sweets before going to our room. Nice room, nice onsen and very nice team of staffs. Yuda onsen has quite alot of offer so do your homework and visit these interesting places. We booked half board and keiseki dinner was so beautifully presented and yummy. Both meals has fugu.

The entrance may be quite easy to miss. It is very small and we need to drive in as we have luggage to offload.

Matsudaya is an extraordinary place--beautiful rooms in a lovely setting, unbelievable kaiseki-style meals, beautiful indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths, attentive and helpful staff. Definitely a memorable stay!

The top class greeting and personal attention. Attention to detail was at a high level. The breakfast was beyond expectation and memorable to the extent of the quality and amount of food. The facilities were impressive and the location excellent. Highly recommend this stay.

幕末の獅子を近くで感じられて、感動でした。

小さい段差があったので、年配者には、ちょっと危ないかなぁと心配しました。

歴史的遺産に触れられる。池の鯉にエサをあげられる。

夕食時、まだ食べ終わっていない皿を下げられそうになった事が2度あった。そこまでして急かされたのに最後のご飯が出てくるのに時間がかかった上に冷めていた。

The garden was amazing , it felt special to be in such a historical site .

This is a very traditional and even historic "hotel". We booked a corner suite which was honestly Japan fabulous. Overlooking the exquisite gardens and with anything one might want, although very traditionally Japanese. The stone tub private onsen was excellent. We arrived in the midst of a late heat wave and the a/c worked well, even in the "traditional" part of the lodging. Breakfast was served in a private booth and was wonderful. The staff was helpful and attempted to accommodate non-English speakers in our party.

The area around the hotel is slightly bleak, and finding a foreigner-friendly Izakaya challenging. Since the Hotel does not offer dinner, it might want to team up with local izakaya to do reservations easily. We were disappointed with local dining options and the poor reception we received as Japanese speaking gaijin.

1人でも周りを気にせずにゆったりでき、プライベート空間がしっかりと確保されていて安心できました。

部屋の壁が少し薄いところですね。老舗の本館なら昔からの建物と言うことで許容範囲内です。

歴史のある建物内だが、新しい設備で過ごしやすかった。

福岡から島根に旅行し、帰りに1泊しました晩御飯は外で食べましたが、従業員の丁寧な対応、お風呂も檜のいい匂いがします。家族風呂も予約なしで空いてたら入れます。部屋は様々ですが利用した部屋はきれいでした。 朝ごはんは大人がお腹１杯になるくらいの量です。 小さい子供は苦手な食べ物があるかもしれません。ホテルに事前に相談してみたら良かったかも。

Met a group of sincere and kind-hearted staff in hotel. The building and the Japanese Garden behind left us with good memory of some past history. Easy parking for visitors who drive to Hotel.

とても歴史のある宿で、幕末の志士達が集まり、その後入った温泉が家族風呂として残っている、とても価値のある温泉宿でした。 サービスが兎に角秀逸で、料理も美味しく、庭園も綺麗に手入れされ、錦鯉の餌やりも楽しめます。 また、訪れたいです。

This is my second ryokan hotel and I am glad I stayed for 3 nights. Stayed at a very special Japanese style room that was overlooking the mesmerizing Japanese garden. They switched the female and male bath between mornings and nights so you could enjoy all the bath that hotel has to offer. One of the highlights has to be the Japanese breakfasts every morning. Each meal is different and so very delicious. All the staff are so attentive and make sure you have the most pleasant stay. I truly don’t want to leave here. Even tho we didn’t get to try their dinner, there are so many great restaurants nearby. Yuda onsen is such a special onsen town and I can’t wait to come back and visit here again soon ❤️

A wonderful experience! You feel so pampered and treated royally. The rooms are beautiful without being overly extravagant, a quiet elegance. The small garden and pond with huge koi, the private furo, the sumptuous breakfast in a private room, all made us want to stay longer to just relax.

I wish we could've stayed longer to explore the area more. Appears there is quite a night life to Yamaguchi and Yudaonsen.

Our dining staff Miki was amazing and took great care of us. The Kaiseki dining dinner option was good, but they could have provided additional rice at the end by request as the amount was 4 bites.

Our room was absolutely a horrible experience, and I think we deserve a refund, or at least a partial refund. The room was 9 degrees on arrival, and by 17:00 we still had 12 degrees. Dissappointing.

A worthwhile stay for rich historical references

Beautiful architecture and garden, warm fire to greet us at the entrance; felt transported despite being on main road. Could enjoy multiple baths, some with garden views. Staff were attentive and helpful. Historic artefacts on display in “museum” was a great touch.

Toilet washlet kept on auto cleaning (or something) every 5 minutes or so, making a lot of noise, so we just unplugged it.

Staying at Matsudaya was a wonderful experience. It was beautiful, peaceful, and comfortable. The onsen baths were great. The food was outstanding. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and polite. Our visit was no nice that we were very sad to leave. Matsudaya was everything we could have hoped for in a traditional onsen ryokan. We hope to return someday.

Having booked over hundreds of hotels, it was my first time to fill reservation form incorrectly (4 people family but didn't notice it was a 2 people order). Even so, the staff kindly informed me the order was wrong and gently asked me for extra people's futon charge without displeasure. They even provided rice and furikake for the kids for free in breakfast the next morning. I felt so touched in Matsudaya hotel.

A wonderful traditional onsen hotel in the countryside. 350 years of history and legacy that has been protected. A gorgeous 150 year old japanese garden and huge koi's. Outstanding in-house onsen facilities and incredible breakfast. The room was absolutely gorgeous - we even printed a photo that we took of our room on a t-shirt. The staff were incredibly welcoming - especially Micky! Our only regret was that we didn't stay longer. We hope to be back!

The staff was incredibly accommodating and the garden was magnificent. Getting to feed the koi each morning and relaxing in the peaceful environment was fabulous. Couldn't recommend it higher.

Remarkable, elegant, gracious, warm hospitality. The baths were fun and the food was excellent.

We loved our stay at this 300-year-old Japanese style hotel. The staff was excellent. The rooms were excellent. And the onsen took all our troubles (and aches) away. Highly recommend it.
