Although hotel is a little dated, it is very clean, presentable and comfortable, the bedroom was ideal and very clean. Staff were very helpful and welcoming. Restaurant was excellent, good breakfast and evening meals.
No complaints.
Space in room
Shower hot water didnt always work and the water stopped working once during our stay
We stayed here for 5 nights when touring the Shetlands on a group holiday. Overall it was very good, with some caveats. Good points: - the room was huge, it would have been very big just as a room but we stayed in a suite and it was genuinely enormous (it was clearly just two rooms knocked into one) - plenty of storage space in the room - decent shower; I like an over-bath one which this was, and plenty of (very) hot water - staff lovely and extremely helpful with issues some of our tour group (not us) had during our stay - help yourself tea (various varieties)/coffee/bisuits/toiletries/towels/toilet rolls in reception in lieu of room cleaning, unless you asked for the room to be cleaned, which suited us fine - very nice breakfast with plenty of fruit available on the continental buffet, cooked and porridge made to order (and you could even specify whether you wanted porridge made with milk, water or a mixture) - excellent dinners from our group’s set menu - we were at the back of the hotel and there was very little external noise - good location right opposite the ferry terminal and a short walk (10-15 mins) into central Lerwick, with the co-op only a few minutes’ walk away Not so good points - despite the huge room, only a standard double sized bed, which is quite unusual these days - no fridge in the room despite there being an obvious cupboard space for one under the kettle area - small single use plastic bottles of shower gel/shampoo (although there were small bars of soap too) - the lift broke down at the beginning of our stay, and then remained broken, not a problem for us but there were several people in our group of about 30 with mobility issues, for whom it was a problem as there are quite a lot of stairs. - decor really needs redoing throughout! Our room had a 1980s premier inn decor feel, whilst our corridor had blood red wallpaper, peeling in places, which gave a somewhat “cheesy horror movie” feel! The stairs, reception and restaurant were better but still a bit dated. - gluten free and vegetarian options available for dinner, presumably breakfast too, but no signs at all of other dietary needs eg dairy free options etc - quite a lot of internal noise such as from the room next door and the corridor - it would have been nice to have more lighting in the room eg above the kettle area, which was the darkest part of the room, and a central light in the lounge part of the suite would have helped. Overall we enjoyed our stay very much and would happily stay here again.
Just back from here , first of all , yes the hotel is dated but the bedrooms are clean , and comfortable. Bathroom is spotless and fresh towels always available. I liked the idea of replenishing your own supplies from reception. Food is very good, breakfast is hot and tasty . Dinners are excellent and great gf selection, very reasonable prices. Staff are very efficient but friendly too . Didn’t get everyone’s names but Julie , Valerie and Stephen are lovely. Would definitely recommend, but you do need a car to get around.

Location and facilities
Couldn’t open bedroom window at night when it was very warm. It seemed to be locked
Frokost og personale.
Slitte rom. Håpløs plassering av tv. Ødela mulighet for å sitte og å benytte speil. Middag dyr og ikke særlig god i forhold til pris og andre restauranter i Lerwick.
Location to ferry port
Price vs age of property. Not real convenient for disabled.
We stayed here for three nights our room was clean but had peeling wallpaper dated furniture. Bed was comfortable with four posts in each corner (no top ) . Shower over bath was very good and clean . All corridors were a deep red like walking through hell !! Lift was broken so had to use stairs whole time . Meal in restaurant was ok had a bit of a wait due to large coach party in and staff did tell us about wait which was ok . Breakfast was a bit limited but cooked food very good . Staff were very helpful and friendly especially Valerie and bar gentleman in evening . Hotel is a good 20 mins away from town centre. For tea/coffee in room you can help yourself to more items from reception as towels if you did not request room service daily .
Nothing.
Room shower electrics dangerous food stodgy
A sad place. Firstly though the staff were helpful and I hope they get jobs elsewhere so they can work in pleasant surroundings, this must be so demoralising for them. This hotel is really a place for short-term workers to use pre and post ferry ( ie oil workers etc) - as I think it was built for. Our shower stopped after 20 mins , there is a socket marked - ‘do not put a heater in’ and worked only when the ceiling light was on - dangerous!! (!), the lift stops a floor short, the beds were very uncomfortable, the decor is ORIGINAL ‘70’s ( I recognise it), the hairdryer was out of the ark ..and the fire hose is marked ‘ do not use’ !? There was no fridge and no safe in the room …. There is no residents lounge - a few chairs near the bar in the restaurant doesn’t count. Overall the place is dreadful - no atmosphere, very poor looking, minimum amenities, evening meals stodgy, breakfast just OK ( but what can go wrong with museli and /bacon? Use it as a place to put your head down for 1 night or so if you must, but don’t stay as part of a holiday. We left early.
Staff were very helpful, worked hard and put things right when we had problems. Right by the ferry terminal. Good breakfast. Quiet. Good parking. Good location for accessing the rest of mainland Shetland.
The rooms are in an urgent need of refurbishment. The hotel corridor was oppressively dark red and dilapidated. A 10-15 minute walk from the main town centre.
The location was good to walk into Lerwick
The room was a good size, however it was dated, cracked wash basin, uncomfortable bed and no servicing of the room meant we did have a couple of bags of rubbish with nowhere to put them.
From the check in stage you are made to feel very welcome. Staff were very friendly and professional at all times and always on hand if you needed anything. The rooms are a bit dated but VERY clean with a well stocked tea and coffee tray. Shower was hot and powerful. Food was excellent and plentiful with the main dish being served nice and hot. Breakfast is amazing with lots of choice You will leave the hotel with a great nights sleep, hot shower and full stomach.
Friendly staff in restaurant and bar. Spacious room with plenty of storage. Good breakfast
Lack of reception staff one had to ring to get anyone other than in the day. Furnishings a bit tired. Bar and restaurant close early in the evening so facilities limited meaning you had to go out
We stayed at The Shetland Hotel for six days in May and primarily booked it for accessiblity needs. We could not have chosen better. The room was very clean, the beds extremely conmfortable, the service was excellent and the food was delicious. I chose from the vegetarian menu and the choices were fantastic. Perfectly cooked and not the general run of the mill most establishments offer. Actually I would say it was the best vegetarian food I have ever tasted. The staff- where shall I begin. Abvolutely fantastic, nothing ever too much trouble. I can't remember all of their names but each and everyone were amazing and friendly. The manager, Jane and Valerie, were so lovely and I became very fond of them. They were super helpful, frendly and always ready to chat if we wanted. I am very critical when I need to be but I can say that The Shetlandf Hotel was the best hotel I have ever stayed at factoring the staff, the rooms, the food, the service. If I was to recommend anything I would say an EV car charging point would be a valuable asset. Shetland was very low on EV car charging points and those that were there were not working. Thank you Jane, Valerie and the rest of The Stetland Hotel staff. You are the best! Sarah and David
Breakfast was very good and staff very pleasant. Evening meal had lots of choice, although I found the food bland.
This hotel was booked by Robertson's Coaches as part of the Shetland Tour holiday they offer. They were superb by the way. Our experience of the Shetland Hotel was excellent. The Restaurant/Bar team were excellent - so friendly and helpful. We had breakfasts and evening meals in the hotel, as part of our tour package, and we couldn't fault them. We were facing the main road/ferry terminal and to be honest we weren't inconvenienced by any noise, even though at the time of our visit, there were road works right opposite. Our room was absolutely fine and beautifully clean
Parcheggio gratuito privato.
Traditional Scottish hotel, clean and comfortable. Great breakfast
A bit far from the centre of Lerwick and very expensive
Stayed here for 6 nights for a mix of work and sightseeing. Do not be put off by the exterior. The hotel is clean and modern with super friendly and helpful staff. Breakfasts and dinners were really tasty. Very easy to walk into central Lerwick
What is objectively clear from the food being served in the restaurant, the chef does not give a sh!÷ about life. His or yours. Rooms ok. Overpriced, run down, out dated and under invested in. But it's Shetland so you are held to ransom.
Every thing was good, please note that I booked this for friends and they advised me that all was good.
Nothing to add
Location of the hotel was good
Hotel and room was substandard and the breakfast was OK, but the hotel itself had a pest (fly) infestation so for all six days we had flies in our room it was pretty bad, 1 of our plug sockets was broke so we had to share 1 plug socket that was also bad. Also had the flies accompanying us at breakfast times, too, so the continental was off limits, and the fruit options were a no go.
The bed is one of the most uncomfortable that we have ever experienced - and we have visited many establishments worldwide! For the price, the whole set up was not good value. We did complain to the receptionist in the morning …. but think it fell on deaf ears! The breakfast was reasonable, but definitely not ‘wow’. The staff were very nice and friendly, but unfortunately we will not be returning to this hotel.
The staff was incredible. Friendly, polite, helpful.
A bit dated and in need of lots of little repairs
Good location, acceptable room, good breakfast.
No elevator, few amenities, nothing special.
Rent og hyggelig personale
Litt slitt og utdatert
Quite dated and run down. Check in is on an upper floor. Elevator did not go to all floors. No security chains on the doors of the rooms. No safes in the room to protect valuables while you are out. Wainscoting and wallpaper peeling off in the hall. They do not service your room, pick up the trash, or bring clean towels unless you specifically call them and ask them to... each day. Towels are set out at check in, so you might as well climb the stairs and go get them yourself. Fire equipment on our floor, a hose, had a large sticker on it that said "Do Not Use." Bathroom door handle fell off one morning and I called to see about getting it fixed. Their response, "Well, can't you get out?" Finally got it fixed. The hotel is directly across the street from the ferry terminal. Breakfast is fine. Dinner...take your chances. We ate a lot of scones from local bakeries. The pictures attached were all taken outside our room.
Exceptional service, food options for Gluten-free were numerous and very tasty. Restaurant pricing was reasonable. Really enjoyed the service at this hotel. The staff are just lovely. The property is a little dated to look at, but is very clean and comfortable. Lots of gathering areas thoughout hotel and very good sized rooms. Would recommend and will return if possible.
Staff were great. Food was good. Breakfast was great. Lots of parking.
Nothing really. Enjoyed my stay.
This hotel is a good choice if you are traveling by ferry. It is across the road from the ferry terminal. The bus into the town centre stops right in front of the hotel or you can have a pleasant 15 minute walk. My room was spacious and comfortable but not fancy.
The food was good and there was plenty of choice. The staff particularly in the restaurant were excellent and always attentive which always adds to a stay. The location was good with plenty of parking My only slightly negative comment is that with the great view we had of the harbour would have been better had the windows externally been cleaned Would stay here again I
Best menu and delicious food. Range of traditional and innovative options. Beautifully prepared. Elegant and with a buzz. Felt special.
Helpful, cheerful staff. Good food. Very relaxing.
Friendly staff and was able to check in early which was a great bonus. Room was large and comfortable. Breakfast provided lots of choices.
The location was good. The staff was friendly.
No hotter in the shower. Room was baking upon arrival, had to go to a local hardware store to purchase a fan to help cool the room
A Shetland local told us there are no great hotels on the island, and it's basically a small town so our hopes were not too hight. The outside of the hotel is rather dismal. In this case the book is better than the cover. Our room was spacious but not fancy. We enjoyed the view - looking right at the ferry building. It was fun watching the ferry leave each night. And we arrived by ferry, so the location was a huge plus. The breakfast buffet (free) was good. Both hot and cold options. Hot food is cooked to order. There wasn't any room service during our 4-night stay but the lobby had extra supplies laid out so we could grab toilet paper, coffee, towels, etc. at any time of day.
Very nice evening meal, staff pleasent and helpful.
We had a room and suite, it had 2 seats, would of been better with a settee?, bed fairly narrow for a double, bar wasn't open till 5pm, though after asking we did get a drink, breakfast was ok.
We decided to eat at other restaurants but for breakfast and for our other needs the property was fine and the staff very helpful. We enjoyed our stay.
The hotel is ideally located for those taking the NorthLink ferry to and from Shetland. If you are planning to stay for a few days like we did, it's worth noting that the hotel is about a 25-minute walk from the city centre and an 18-minute walk from the central bus transport hub in Lerwick. The staff were exceptionally friendly and provided great recommendations for local sightseeing. One aspect we would suggest improving is the issue of flies entering the room, as the windows lack screens. This did impact our overall experience at the hotel.
Quiet hotel, even though across from ferry landing. Staff was friendly, especially in dining room. Easy walk to the Co-op for supplies
Based at the ferry terminal the hotel is about a 15min walk into the centre of Lerwick and has ample parking. The two main positives were the lovely staff, and the food. I had breakfast and dinner twice and the food was great. The waiting staff were really nice and the chef popped by too. The hotel feels slightly dated although the room was spacious, clean and quiet (I was at the front of hotel) I liked the coffee machine in the room and you could top up with biscuits, tea, coffee etc from reception anytime.
Food excellent, we had a evening meal, absolutely delicious, breakfast was ok, my wife had scrambled eggs, they looked a bit bland, my cooked breakfast was fine.was very nice having coffee machine in the room.
As said, wife's breakfast looked rather bland, hairdryer didn't work in our room .
La taille de la chambre, la proximité du terminal de ferry, le restaurant
Vieillot - mérite un rafraîchissement
Breakfast and dinner
Facilities were tired and worn
Amazing stay!
Comfortable mattress , clean, excellent breakfast, serving staff at breakfast excellent
Receptionist on check in non accommodating and annoying . All other reception people were good. Location not right in the town so 15 minute walk to commercial street
Not a lot to be honest, the staff were friendly
Stuck in the 80s with little investment into the property, out dated, poor.
Stayed at the Shetland Hotel for two nights whilst visiting friends in Shetland. I am a regular traveller to the Shetland Islands and have stayed in the Shetland Hotel a number of times. The room is always immaculately clean and adequately supplied with toiletries/tea, coffee etc with the recent addition of Tassimo coffee machines. You can pick-up additional of any of the above at the reception area. Also available is a large TV, harbour views and plentiful storage. Bathrooms are equipped with bath/shower and I found water pressure to be good. Although I didn’t eat at the hotel on this occasion I have previously and found the food to be very good, with friendly service. Noise levels are a consideration - the hotel is situated alongside a very busy road in Lerwick where many commute along from early in the morning. Ideally it is directly across the road from the ferry terminal however this can also bring with it some noise. The hotel itself is dated and in need of some updating - some of the furniture is showing significant wear and tear and is very old fashioned - not a massive issue for myself but don’t book expecting a modern hotel experience. The main scope for improvement is manning at the reception desk - I have found on occasion that there is a long wait for check in or out - however the service itself is always good. Overall, the best hotel in Lerwick in my opinion and another enjoyable stay.
A first class hotel. Great resteraunt, with an excellent breakfast.
As the onsite pub was closed, had a long walk to the nearest one. All else was good.
It’s probably the ugliest building we’ve ever stayed in, but better inside. Our room was rather ‘tired’ - wallpaper peeling off, large crack in the basin, but was clean. Food was really good, and excellent breakfast.
Location
Nothing
It was comfortable, quiet, clean, convenient to the bus. The food was good but one of the waiters did not get my order correct and did not clean off my table and ask me if I wanted dessert. It was a minor incident but irritating
Staff were absolutely lovely and very accommodating. They are dog friendly and fussed over our two little beagles! We were on the third floor, which, to be honest, was a bit of a slog each time they needed to go out. Also, if you're elderly there's no working lift, so ask for a room closer to reception. The food was great. They do not sell alcohol, but you can take your own. The room was ok, three single beds. There was a bit of dust, the bathroom is dated and the door to it needed fixing. It is quite expensive for what you get, but with two dogs you are limited to where you can stay. I understand It is due to be updated at the end of the season.
The hotel was a bit tired but the staff made up for it - the food service was excellent
Good location, lots of parking space. Great evening meals in the restaurant.
Rooms outdated. Very expensive for the rooms not being serviced unless you ask for it. Some staff appeared sullen, others were lovely
Easy to locate and perfect parking. Ideal for ferry arrivals.
This hotel is conveniently situated opposite the ferry terminal. The room as comfortable and a good size, although I was told on arrival it would not be serviced unless I requested it. I dined in r the restaurant one evening for dinner and for breakfast. The food was cooked to a reasonable standard and the staff were polite and courteous.
Staff were all very friendly , but the hotel is rather dated & in need of a re vamp. The dining room is unwelcoming & is like being in a ferry . Line upon line of ghastly Formica topped tables . Very unappealing. Very expensive for quality of the hotel .
We found the Shelton to be great for travelling by ferry. It’s a short walk to the city center. The included breakfast was a nice benefit with a continental or hot option. We would have liked a longer breakfast hours. We did find it a bit cheeky that the restaurant/bar manager wanted to charge us £3.50 for a glass of ice to take back to our room.
Very polite staffed got me to the toilet in speed Ryan it was a good sunny day I was happy with this hotels service thank you
Hotel great for getting out and about on Shetland and just a short stroll into Lerwick. Had dinner ever night, great choice, very tasty and reasonably priced. Good breakfast each morning, they take your cooked breakfast order with nice choice of options (good for the waste as didn't overload the plate). Reception on the 5th floor (which at the back of the hotel is the ground floor given it is on a slope). views from the restaurant are good, looking over the dock at Bressay Island. Staff attentive without being overbearing.
when restaurant is full can be a bit noisey. Bed was a bit soft for my liking, but that is being picky.
No probblems and our stay was great .but property needed some repair/maintenance.
20 minute walk to downtown Lerwick. Staff were so very friendly and knowledgeable. Food was very good, breakfast outstanding. Shout out to Valerie in the dining room.
Breakfast was excellent. Lots of choice and delicious porridge.
Nothing
Friendly staff and unlimited biscuits and tea making facilities
The room was only cleaned once in 11 days
Excellent choice of food at breakfast including continental; also plenty of coffee etc materails in room - for coffee addicts.
Staff very friendly and room well appointed
The hotel is directly opposite the Northlink ferry terminal and it depends on where your room is as to what view you have. Although my bed springs made a noise when I moved I had very comfortable sleeps. The meals were very good and, although we were on a coach tour with a more limited menu compared to other diners there was still a decent choice for each course. Breakfast service was hit and miss but this was (I think) because there were young trainee staff on duty. However, they were improving as the week went on. The staff were very helpful and friendly especially the very hard working Jane who went out of her way to find details of church services for us. The hotel is at one end of Lerwick but, as Lerwick isn’t very big, it’s only about 15 minutes walk from the town centre.
Friendly, welcoming
Needed a face lift. And a new mattress
Plus point,VERY convenient for the ferry.to/from Aberdeen Negative points. Reception level on third floor. Utilitarian layout. Very inconvenient. Elevator arrangement to certain floors1
Whilst in Lerwick educating personnel on a vessel that was destined to work in a hazardous area of the North Sea. It was a real pleasure to be accommodated in this marvellous hotel that oozes memorabilia from previous Up Helly Ha’s, something I’ve always wanted to attend and this visit will hasten my return. Professionally ran by a passionate manageress who hails from Shetland which is something us folk of Scotland wish to see more of. Super Braw Aye 💙🏴
This 3 star hotel is much better than it looks from the very dreary outside. The staff were all fantastic and the breakfast very good. We only had one evening meal which was fine, my sliders were great but my partner was not so keen on his burger. Parts of the hotel seems to be recently refurbished but not sure abou the strange choice of bright dark pink in the hallway to our room ( 506) which to my mind does not fit with the rest of with Shetland.
Excellent location for Aberdeen to Lerwick ferry. About a mile from city center. I walked a lot.
Quick and easy check-in and out. Room was large and clean. TV was difficult to control but all that you need was in the room. Breakfast was served which was nice and not a buffet style. Bed was not comfortable and mattress needs to be replaced. Restaurant was fair and not too expensive as the town is a little walk from the hotel.
Friendly staff and good location within Lerwick.
Some of the furniture in my room could have been a bit more comfortable. Heating was on via electric radiator but not much ventilation.
It sortall rather depressing delivered but not value for money
Food was excellent
Bit dated
Quick and easy check in and out (at unsociable hours. Friendly staff, and great food. All that I needed for a flying visit.
Hotel is in a lovely location, right on the coast. Staff all very friendly, and good food. Like other hotels on the island, it’s very dated inside and the rooms are basic but clean. Breakfast served from 6:30 so perfect for a work trip if you need to be out early in the morning.
The Shetland Hotel is perfectly adequate. It is tired. But it is extremely clean and the staff are attentive and helpful. It is quiet. The bathrooms are basic but sound. The bed linens are nice enough. It is not fancy! But it does the job and sometimes that’s all you need. And for knitters, it is an easy walk to Jamieson and Smith, for repeat yarn purchases. The restaurant is quite good. Excellent staff.
Room specifically provided smart TV
