We stayed at Yokotei for five nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It offers a good combination of traditional Japanese hospitality, excellent views, convenient access to Nagasaki, and good value. Yokotei is one of three sister hotels located on the same hillside and is the one that focuses more on traditional Japanese-style dining. Our room overlooked Nagasaki city and the bay, with Mt Inasa directly across from us. The view was magnificent, particularly at night when the city lights came on. We were fortunate to have clear weather throughout our stay, so we could enjoy the view every day. We opted for breakfast each morning, which was a traditional Japanese set breakfast. The menu changed daily and typically consisted of around ten different items, including rice, soup, fish and various local dishes. It was a very nice way to start the day and gave us the opportunity to try different Japanese foods. Guests also have the option of taking the buffet breakfast at the sister hotel, Baishokaku, next door. Although the hotel is located on a hillside, getting around was quite easy. There is a complimentary shuttle between the hotel and Nagasaki Station, operating approximately hourly from 8am to 8pm. We also used Uber regularly. Waiting times were usually less than five minutes and we found the fares quite reasonable. Major attractions such as the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and Peace Park, Oura Church and Glover Garden were generally within about 20 minutes by car. One of the highlights of our stay was the Shippoku dinner at Yokotei. It was an excellent experience and something I would definitely recommend trying at least once while staying here. Nagasaki itself also has plenty of good places to eat, and the local beef is well worth trying. The staff were consistently courteous and helpful. A special mention must go to Mr Noda, the manager, who was particularly attentive to our needs and helped make our stay very comfortable.
There was nothing we disliked about Yokotei. Its hillside setting, traditional rooms, futons, public bath and Japanese-style dining were all part of the character that attracted us to the hotel in the first place. Rather than seeing these features as limitations, we regarded them as an important part of the experience we had chosen. Overall, Yokotei was a very enjoyable five-night stay. It may not be intended to provide the facilities of a large modern international hotel, but that is not really its appeal. What it offers is a genuine traditional Japanese experience, very good hospitality, beautiful views and convenient access to Nagasaki’s main attractions. For us, it represented very good value and added considerably to our experience of Nagasaki.
Wonderful Views of the city
Hotel davvero tradizionale, vista stupenda. Servizio navetta gratuito.
Necessaria auto o taxi fuori dagli orari della navetta. Non raggiungibile a piedi.
My husband and I enjoyed staying in the Japanese style room in this hotel--we felt absolutely pampered! The warm welcome (cold towels on a hot day) and tea as we checked in, the tour of the hotel before settling in, and the futon service--all these signaled a wonderful stay. We enjoyed the delicious breakfast and the dinner served in our room (you have to reserve this ahead), the view of the harbor from our room, and the onsen. The shuttle service worked very well to get us to and from Nagasaki Station.
I tried to reserve dinner via a message through Booking.com on our first night, but the message never seemed to get through. We were advised to take the shuttle back to Nagasaki Station (which had many good offerings). We did have a wonderful dinner on the second night. So the hotel might be advised to check communication via the Booking platform more regularly.
The spacious rooms, the magnificent view over Nagasaki and the flawless service!
There’s nothing to complain about.
They had a shuttle from the train station to bring you up and back. The Onsen was wonderful.
Unfortunately 4 of us got ill from the dinner served. Not enough western selections at breakfast.
Beautiful traditional ryokan with an unbelievable view. Staff very friendly and when my daughter had a small mishap the manager personally came to our room and provided medical help. Dinner was a great culinarily and cultural experience.
Not a criticism, but if you get the dinner, translate the accompanying menu on your phone so you can follow the courses correctly.
view, free shuttle bus and breakfast
shower at the female bigger bath was not strong enough.
Traditional ryokan with great view over the city, nice onsen and good breakfast
Futon was too thin and needs more soft cushion for the bottom.
The traditional Japanese style. Futon beds on the floor, onsen and beautifully presented breakfast. On top of a hill, the views are spectacular.
The only challenge is that the distance made it difficult to take a break during our sightseeing days. The shuttle bus is a great help.
Beautiful location overlooking the city. Great traditional breakfast. Room was clean and well appointed. Staff was friendly and responsive. Its a bit of a drive from the city but their shuttle bus was timely and easy to use.
Great breakfast. Lovely service. Delicious kaiseki dinner. Spacious room, comfy beds! We loved it.

Great hilltop location giving a magnificent view of Nagasaki. Very spacious suite, tastefully furnished in traditional style. Amazing kaiseki food
Communication could have been improved. The hotel didn't respond to my messages sent via Booking.com and told us we could book dinner for the following day only to tell us the next day that we couldn't book dinner...
Such a special hotel - the best of a hotel and ryokan. The staff were so kind and went out of their way to help. The view from our room as well as the breakfast room was stunning. Breakfast was delicious each morning. The location, while a bit removed from the city, is not something we could really complain about given that it is what also allows for the sense of peace and the aforementioned incredible views of the city. There's a shuttle to and from the central part of the city, which is convenient. We especially enjoyed the onsen, both the hotel's own as well as the larger one shared with the sister property. Maybe we were lucky, but the shared onsen was not only large, but not crowded at all. We loved Nagasaki and staying here was a really big part of that. We would love to visit again - HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Nothing!
The accomodation, facilities, breakfast and view exceeded our expectations. The staff were extremely helpful. Remember you will be sleeping on futon mats. We gave no hesitation in recommending this Ryokan.
Amazing view and facility
I loved the traditional feeling, I loved the atmosphere and ambience. Food was great staff were great and friendly. View was breathtaking and even better than any photo could capture
It was a little far from most public transport being on the mountain, so it's advised to have a car. If you're expecting 5 star hotel cleanliness and service you might be disappointed but the hotel does really assume you understand that it's a Ryokan first and not a hotel first.
Wonderful views over Nagasaki, great staff and delicious food
Only downside is the need to get a shuttle bus to and from the hotel
Such an incredible view of Nagasaki from the rooms. Lovely hotel with kind staff and great onsens as well! Loved staying here, definitely a highlight of our trip and a view I won't soon forget. Location is on top of a hill in the middle of the city, which seems far from the top, but we never took a taxi ride there or back that was longer than 10-12 minutes. Very nice. Walking down the hotel to the tram is fun to do at least once too, weather permitting. :)

Spectacular view over Nagasaki Harbour from our room. Dinner served in the room is an unforgettable experience and the staff coming to make up the bed in room on the floor was cute too. A wonderfully unique place to stay for a night in Nagasaki!
It’s not a dislike, but it would be difficult to visit the other sights of Nagasaki from the hotel without a 15-20 minute taxi ride in each direction. Not a criticism but practical advice.
The room was very spacious, with breathtaking views of Nagasaki.
On the night of 15 November 2025, we waited in vain at Nagasaki JR station from 6.40 pm for the 7 pm shuttle bus to the hotel. Perhaps we missed it because it did not have any signage in English, nor the hotel logo? As the 7 pm shuttle bus the night before (on 14 November) had the hotel logo on it, we were expecting the same for 15 Nov. The 8 pm shuttle did not have the hotel logo or any sign displayed in English and we had to approach the driver before he took out the sign for the hotel which, in our opinion, should have been displayed on the front window screen.
Beautiful room! Beautiful view. Staff were helpful.
No free water. Couldn’t order dinner. Didn’t realize breakfast was Japanese only.
All element to experience the Japanese Ryokan experience are there. The room are in the traditional style, with typical decoration and ̀with a great view on Nagasaki. There is access to 2 baths, with indoor and outdoor bath with view on the city. The food was excellent, well presented and served. The personal was also perfect, always smiling and helpful. Wonderful experience for me.
Welcome, Service Level, Food was exzellent, view extra ordinary.

The authentic Japanese style room
Place was great for a traditional Japanese experience. Some instructions in English for when to wear the shoes and robes, and how to put the beds together would be helpful.
Everything. The apartment sized family rooms and incredible silent view was astonishing. The baths were great, staff incredibly welcoming to foreigners and eager to make sure we understood everything and maximized our enjoyment.
An absolutely beautiful hotel high up in the hills. Tranquil and relaxing. Two onsen which were both lovely. The shuttle bus was handy to get in and out of town. And we had the most wonderful Kaiseki meal. Highly recommend this hotel!
Beautiful ryokan room , great view of Znagaski central city and harbour from the top of hill , free and convenient parking at location . Great breakfast personalised table
Not much , maybe advice thst we could pre order dinner to be served in our room. No restaurant for dinner .
The location, the view, the size of the room
The hotel is past its prime and is due a refurbishment. Staff is lovely but the English of the people we interacted with was limited which made communications difficult Email address does not work
The breakfast is personalized to you according to whether it is the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. day you stay there. The views are great. The snacks provided are also nice; I bought some home to give my friends. There is a small bath but you can also use the bigger bath in their sister hotel, Baishokaku.
The drive up to the hotel is harrowing and steep, which is also the case for 70% of urban Nagasaki localities. It is tricky to adjust the temperature of indoor heating here.
would have given excellent rating but for food was average
food
beautiful view of Nagasaki over looking the city from a high perch.
traditional futon beds are less comfortable than western beds.
It was excellent. The staff were very attentive and very kind. They took really good care of us at all times. Providing us with much tea, snacks and always ready to help. Would recommend.
This a favourite of ours. The staff are exceptional and the view is the most amazing we have seen in Japan. If you are looking for a great Ryokan experience in Japan then you can’t go past this little gem.
The rooms were quite hot at night but we were provided with fans to cool down as soon as we mentioned it. Not the hotel’s fault as the autumn has been unseasonably hot this year.
The staff and guests were mostly all japanese, howevery, everyone who interacted with us was more then lovely and kind to us. Also the view is the best ull ever have in a hotel. Our room was stunning and gorgeous. We would stay here again whenever we visit the amazing Nagasaki again.
Absolutely nothing to complain 12/10 points!
Staff was patient and very accommodative. Traditional japanese breakfast was beautiful! Free shuttle was convenient and not far from nagasaki station. Onsen was clean and tidy. Very nice to have frozen Popsicles on the way out of the onsen. Rooms well appointed and tatami was surprisingly comfortable.
Beautiful setting and design. Super friendly staff. Authentic Japanese breakfast included. We don’t eat meat and they made sure there were plenty of fish and vegetable dishes every morning.
-
Lovely Japanese style hotel with excellent and friendly staff. Excellent onsen. Amazing views across Nagasaki. Shuttle bus from station made location more practical.
Didn't realise that there is no on site restuarant. If you didn't order food before stay which was served in room, had to go down hill to central Nagasaki.
This is a really beautiful Japanese style hotel. The view of the city and harbour is spectacular. The staff is lovely. There a shuttles to take you from Nagasaki Station to the hotel and back. Breakfast is abundant.
It wasn’t a problem for us, but this property is not completely accessible. There isn’t an elevator or escalator and you need to go up and down via the stairs.
Excellent night view
Food and stay are great. Onsen facilities and stay are amazing
Amazing view over Nagasaki
Nothing
The reception staff and the restaurant staff are very friendly
Hospitality, view, food, the whole experience
A visit to Nisshokan Bettei Koyotei is like a step back to gentle and easy days. Absolutely 1st rate staff made everything about my stay enjoyable and relaxing. It was obvious they prepared well, learned who we were and what we liked. I felt valued, pampered, and relaxed. There is no better location in Nagasaki. What a view!
This is an older hotel and feels a little dated. It was easy for our large picture window to fog up. The walk to the sento bath feels like a trek. Also, it is so far up the mountain that you cannot walk to this hotel. A taxi/shuttle ride is an adventure as well. I don't know how they make it up the final drive-way. so steep!
Absolutely lovely hotel. Beautiful, helpful and efficient staff made the stay so smooth and restful. Huge room. Wonderful food. The most amazing view over Nagasaki and its harbour from the sitting area in our room. Loved it. Also great minibus service to and from hotel to train station (central area); the drivers are amazing. The hill is really something else! Use of onsen at next door sister hotel was very welcome. The onsen at Koyotei is nice and clean but a little small.
Initially we were a bit put off by the massively steep hill upon which these hotels are perched (and a bit scared after driving up it!) as we thought it would be too hard to get around. The minibus service was GREAT though and the view makes the hill absolutely worth it. We walked down to the harbour a couple of times and it's a fascinating crawl - winding down the lanes and staircases through the houses. Didn't walk back up but certainly it is possible. Easy to get taxis back after a late night, and they're cheap.
This hotel is a little out of the way, but really worth it for the view. It's relaxing to see Nagasaki from above at different times of day. The staff were so friendly and always smiling and greeting guests, even giving us big waves as the station shuttle departed. I recommend taking advantage of the shuttle bus because while the city bus gets near the hotel, it's a steep mountain and the remaining walk is quite intense. The included breakfast was high quality.
Tradition Japanese style rooms with very good view of Nagasaki.
Nothing.
The hotel had a wonderful view over Nagasaki. It was a little way from the main town, but we had a car so it was not a problem. There was also a courtesy bus that serviced the hotel down to the station.
What an amazing place to stay. Million dollar view of the city, the most incredible and amazing staff, a beautiful Japanese style room and fantastic Japanese breakfast. The perfect place to stay in Nagasaki. We will definitely be back here in the future.
Nothing it was perfect
