Great location , interesting museum inside hotel.
Bed was too small. The shower flow rate was pathetic.
It’s so so much more than a Hotel. It’s a living museum and a step into history .
All very good .
Quiet location, nice staff. I love their lift.
I didn't like much how the hotel is decorated, a bit creepy in my opinion
A very quirky hotel, with old school charm. Staff were friendly and welcoming which added to the overall feel of the place. Great location, 30 or so minutes to Margate and loads to do on the doorstep. The lift is a treat and I understand the afternoon teas are famous!
The room was a little dated, but the beds were comfortable. the windows opened so we could have fresh air. This is an old hotel so the floorboards creak and the heavy doors slam shut - to be expected.
The staff were very attentive and friendly.
Wonderful to experience a hotel that has been family owned for a considerable time . It is quirky but fascinating. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was impressive Great position.
The room was comfortable. Veggie breakfast was basic
Outside looks appealing but could be cleaner.
Very nice to see the display of products from the past.
Na
Good location and nice staff.
TV didn’t work and the hot water pressure in the shower.
Clean
Spring beds
It was very quaint we had no idea it was a museum - so everything in there was fascinating. It was very much like a hotel from another time which beats all the bed factories out there.
Nothing
The staff were amazing. Nothing was too much trouble.
The bed was rather hard and uncomfortable.
The breakfast was fabulous (but no fresh fruit only tinned). Staff were great.
Guests upstairs were noisy
This place was amazing The quirkiest and most interesting place I've stayed in for a long time. The staff were brilliant and friendly, the room (with a balcony and sea view) was clean and lovely, the breakfast was really good. To have the Napery gallery, pink billiard room, ancient lift etc as well we're all added surprise bonuses. We stayed as a treat for my wife's birthday and she loved the place - earning me good husband points! The location, although not naturally the most picturesque overlooking the bowls club car park, was very close to the path that runs along behind the beach and was a pleasant half hour walk into the centre of Margate. Very highly recommended, and we will return if we can.
Nothing
There was no airconditioning and the rooms were stiffling. The nights were a struggle! Wifi was also questionable.
Walpole Bay is a real gem. Every aspect of our stay exceeded our expectations and for the hotel owner to come round the tables and enquire how we slept was truly wonderful. The service provided by the staff was exemplary.
There is nothing I didn't like.
It was amazing
Nothing
Love the atmosphere, location and character of this hotel
The art gallery and museum were fascinating. The staff were great, and the owner was very friendly and interesting to speak to.
Nothing
Wonderful oldy worldy hotel ….like a step back in time
Super friendly staff , quirky and authentic
The character, the staff, the breakfast and the proximity to the beach.
Air con in the room would be great.
This is an iconic hotel that people go to for all sorts of reasons. Stuck somewhere between 1930 and 1970 it is full of curiosity and is really very odd and interesting.
The thing I disliked most about this Hotel was the breakfast. It was entirely processed apart from a small amount of fruit. Everything was packaged, the bread was appalling and it did if one wanted it to, remind one of the worst motorway café in the 1970s.
Quite location, comfy bed, good selection at breakfast, pleasant courteous staff. Delightfully quirky historic hotel.
Low pressure in bathroom basin cold tap
We very much enjoyed out entire stay at The Walpole. We stayed just one night but, will definitely be returning. The hotel is charming. All the staff we encountered were cheerful and helpful. In particular I found the reception ladies so very helpful. Local information, dinner reservation made on our behalf at a local restaurant. And, taxi ordered 👌
Absolutely nothing.
The atmosphere. Lift. Pictures. Collections.. Sitting outside. Lovely staff
Shower difficult to get temperature right
The staff and owner were most friendly and nothing was too much trouble. If you are expecting shiny, modern facilities then this is not the place for you. The hotel was very quirky and everything was from a bygone age. I was expecting to meet Hercule Poirot on the stairs or in the very old fashioned lift. There is a sense of a family run business and it adds to the ambiance of the hotel. As I say not every one’s cup of tea but worth a visit for lovers of the past.
Nothing I have no complaints.
Very quirky Lovely friendly staff
Very old and in need of some maintenance
Fascinating hotel with the various museum and art collections. We liked the atmosphere of the hotel, friendly and helpful staff and the lovely patio to have breakfast and see the sea. The rooms were comfortable too We liked the board games in the bar . Good quality tea and coffee station in the room. and soaps etc in the bathroom ( including 3 ply loo paper:)
The hotel is well situated with access to the beach but we found it quite far from the Old Town and the Margate Railway Station , as we didn't have a car and the 69 bus passes only once in an hour ..so we walked a lot more than expected which was nice in the ambient warm weather but wouldn't have worked so well in rain and cold
Exceptionally helpful and friendly staff. Lovely rooms, if you get the right one so choose carefully. Has a lovely, arty Margate feel which makes you feel quite at home. Breakfast was great.
Small plastic bottles of toiletries are really something of the past that we should not have any longer. The electric kettles in the rooms are a bad design - need to carry the kettle including lead to the tap.
The location was perfect. It was right by the sea and near to Margate. The breakfast was good but we didn't realise until we saw other people eating that you could order freshly cooked food.
Nothing
Excellent location, so close to the beach. Convenient fur Cliftonville shops and main Margate beaches.
Nothing
Character, location
Tatty, no aircon
Hotel was amazing, very quirky and lots of history. We had tea and caked on the beautiful terrace. We walked to an event at Dreamland, an easy 30 minute walk along the seafront which was a pleasure. Breakfast was great. Staff friendly and helpful.
We found the bed far too soft for our needs, this was our preference though. The bedding was great quality. We also could not get the shower to work well at all, but did not have the time to address this as we had to dash off to an event in London.
Close to the beach, easy to park. Breakfast was lovely.
The rooms are very dated, appreciate trying to fit with the theme but they need updating and could still follow the theme with some brighter decorating and furniture. Bathroom was very small and shabby, needs updating. Shower was poor. Felt overpriced.
I think the breakfast was superb. There was so much choice.
It might be possible to balance the hot/cold water supply for the shower but it is an old building.
Such a lovely place to stay the staff are very friendly and always there to help
Nothing
Its location & quirkiness. Jane’s passion shared by her family & staff.
Having booked a room with a balcony, it would have been nice to have a couple of chairs on it, to absorb the surroundings.
Incredible old hotel. Like stepping back to a much simpler time. Amazing staff, felt very looked after 🩷 left feeling nourished somehow Thank you for a memorable stay
Everything (especially the lift)
Wonderful building and staff
Nothing
What a fabulous experience - not just a hotel - the staff were fantastic - thoughtful - and spoke to you like a human being - Really loved this quirky but perfect place Felt like I was in an agatha christie novel.
nothing except we couldn't stay longer
Location was great and a lovely hotel with old charm
No air con. Understandable in this old building but still uncomfortable without it
Breakfast was excellent and great choice. Very friendly staff and the family room was very clean and great value for money. Very happy with my stay at the Walpole Bay Hotel.
An Edwardian time capsule, the hotel is charming, comfortable and the room was spotlessly clean. Jane, the owner and her team demand high standards of themselves and their hospitality and attentiveness really made an impact. The added museum, ‘napery’ and original gated lift provide additional curiosity factor. Superb breakfast too.
Would have liked a bracket for the shower head for a stand up shower.
This hotel is quirky. As a guest you feel as if you are in a period drama on TV. The staff are friendly beyond compare. Like no other. Great location.
Staff, food, service, location, everything.
Characterful and comfortable old world charm. Fun place to stay evoking memories of a gentler time. Great room, good breakfast. We're returning customers and will be again.
Friendly staff, comfortable bed, good breakfast, big room
Room was very warm but there were fans and the window could be opened fully
It’s beautiful and got a lot of character.
It is quite old and for the price I didn’t think it was worth the money, the breakfast was great and staff were excellent, but the facilities need a bit of love.
If you want to stay somewhere that has character then this is it. We arrived to be told we had been upgraded - always a good start - and were given a room with balcony, a sea view facing west so we had a great view of the sunset and could appreciate that this is Turner country. This is not just a hotel, it is an art gallery and a museum. Every available wall space has a framed picture on table linen left by a guest. There's quite a few by Tracey Emin. This is not just a hotel - it's the pride of Cliftonville.
I should have booked for longer.
The art the staff location great hotel
Lovely traditional seaside hotel with gorgeous outside seating area - very helpful and friendly staff
No air con but a fan was provided
Takes you back in time beautiful antique furniture tasteful placed and having a museum there made it so interesting. I love the terraced where we enjoyed having our coffees , my room was exquisite and spotless the view of the sea from my room window were amazing , breakfast was delicious and the staff gave an excellent service I would definitely stay there again
There was nothing I didn’t like about the property.
Lovely staff, great breakfast, good facilities and clean.
Liked everything. Only minor things that could be improved were that the toilet was a bit difficult to flush and the shower was a bit erratic
The location is excellent being only a short walk to the towns many restaurants.
Breakfast was a buffet affair that could have been better.
Great staff, very friendly and helpful. Excellent location for the Margate Parkrun which starts very close by
The hotel is in need of investment to bring it up to standard.
Wonderful hotel, a truly unique stay. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Cream teas are a must.
The quirky nature of the hotel, the many fascinating items on show.
No hot food available only at breakfast time. Perhaps a small limited lunch menu from 2-6 when guests arrive.
Very nice hotel retro !
All good
What a great hotel very different to there I have stayed before breakfast was really good
Not nothing
Fantastisk och intressant miljö och historia. Jane uppmuntrade oss att se museet och alla fina bidrag från tidigare gäster i form av servetter som målats, broderats mm. Flera framkallade våldsamma skrattsalvor🤣 Tack!
From the moment you arrive and are greated with such a warm welcome you know its gping to be a great stay Amazing bteakfast Amaxing staff
Nothing
Lovely staff, who were so helpful, and fantastic with our dogs. The most comfortable bed I've ever slept in Gorgeous location away from the noise of the town, but close enough to walk to. Delicious breakfast, seemed to have everything anyone would want
Nothing really, but maybe there could have been some light snacks (or just pre-packed sandwiches) available later in the evening.
Lovely location by the sea. Interesting hotel.
Quite dusty in the room.
We liked the hotel as it incorporated its history in many ways with original furniture, displays of historical items and an unusual 'napery' art exhibition
The taps on the bathroom sink were just a bit too old-fashioned as I was unable to mix the hot and cold taps. This needs modernisation.
Quirky, historic and staff were great
Although historic some of it was a little chaotic. Would have been nice to have air conditioning. Some of the decor was a bit tired.
Fabulous location on the cliff with easy access to beach/sea pool. Quirky building with museum, art gallery & ballroom. Family run with very friendly staff. Lovely veranda for alfresco dining. Exceptional breakfast. Free parking
Because the building is old there is no aircon, we stayed during a heatwave so our east facing room was very hot (even with a fan & the window open)
Quirky, good location and fantastic staff. We travel a lot, but never been surrounded by exceptional staff as the ones that work at this hotel.
Smell of old people as soon as you walk into the reception, that was pretty awful. In the morning the whole hotel smell of breakfast. Would be great to have some ventilation there ie just open the door to the reception. Impossible to mix water in the shower, sink tap hardly any water coming out. Bed super noisy. AND NO AIR CONDITIONING, that is just a disaster in this weather. Surely the hotel can afford to purchase at least 2 AC units per year until they have enough for each room. That is quite shocking. We’ve had the worst night ever and left immediately after breakfast. Couldn’t wait to get out of there and get to our cold car.
Wonderfully characterful hotel, beautiful period features, lovely staff.
Room was very warm and heated towel rail was on despite it being summer.
Nice hotel
Nothing not to like
Location, frontage is nice
Very dated, not in a good way
The main attraction of the Walpole Bay Hotel is its nostalgic atmosphere. I have been visiting over a 15 year period and I am pleased that this has not changed. The only change I noticed was I think the bed and pillows are now very comfortable.
Nothing.
Quirkiness/Veranda and lift! The hostess was great.Very engaging and genuinely interested in all guests.
It felt really special and charming. The staff are very friendly and there is so much to see and explore.
A rare find in today world full of authentic charm and good old fashioned great service
I liked everything!
The Walpole Bay Hotel is unlike anywhere we’ve stayed before! History, art, and local charm at every turn, friendly and helpful staff, delicious breakfast and cream tea, and an excellent location—it felt like we were in a time capsule in the best way possible.
Our room was a bit stuffy, but the hotel helpfully had a fan in our room to use.
Everything was Fabulous 😍
Amazing staff lovely hotel breakfast was superb cannot recommend highly enough
the breakfast and some of the staff
the flush didn’t work in the bedroom, the bed was rock solid, some of the plugs didn’t work
The dining area, the staff overall, and the elevator.
No dinner meal service, no dinner options nearby.
Very quirky and unique
No draught selection in bar and the shower was poor
Super quirky and dog friendly right by the beach. Super cool
Loved all
The hotel and location are excellent 👌 it is a beautiful hotel . The staff were brilliant 👏. I had a room with a balcony overlooking the bay. The breakfast experience was great 👍
Everything was perfect 🥰
Such an interesting place!
No complaints at all.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Dog friendly. The 100 year old lift worked smoothly. The mattress was very firm and comfortable. The towels were soft and fluffy. The museum was quaint. Nice hot scone for afternoon tea.
The room was stuffy and hot with no fan or air circulation. The toilet in ensuite bathroom did not flush properly so toilet paper remained in the bowl. The hot water pressure was very low. Electrical sockets were in inconvenient places and there was minimal space to put things on apart from bedside tables. A small fridge is generally standard in hotel rooms but was not provided. Breakfast was a buffet but the hot food was cold. Passable fare. The building was old and needed updating. Tea in tea pots were underwhelming - tea bag fare.
It was another world. The staff were absolutely incredible! The room was spotlessly clean, comfortable and the breakfast was the best breakfast we have ever had at a hotel! The Walpole Bay hotel is like no other. It’s fantastic!
Not much. The curtains weren’t black out. The bed had a footboard but I’m sure if we called ahead they would have given us a room without, being 6ft5 it was difficult to sleep on. Neither are deal breakers!!
Our whole stay at the Walpole Bay was excellent. Fantastic customer service across all areas. Beautiful historic building with many historic features. Loved sitting on the terrace in the sun for breakfast, which was outstanding. Best scrambled eggs I’ve eaten. All cooked items perfectly seasoned. Excellent quality, excellent selection. Our room was lovely, with a balcony & sea view, which was perfect for watching the sunset. I would have happily stayed longer
The only thing missing for us personally was a fridge in our room. Because we’d have been happy to stock up, and hunker down, enjoying both our room, and the balcony, all the more. But that is a minor detail & certainly no reason not to return
This is a wonderful, quirky and unique hotel! Our room was gorgeous with a sea view from the balcony. All the staff and the amazing proprietor were very friendly and welcoming. Can’t wait to spend more time more.
N/A
Delicious breakfast, fab location, gorgeous and quirky. Friendly and fabulous.
Only thing was that the curtains were golden and let in so much light. I think they should provide eye masks. I will definitely bring one next time in case I’m in the same room. Other than that, fabulous!
One of the friendliest and most accomodating welcomes i have ever had. All the staff were lovely throughout.
Nothing
Charming, quirky hotel with excellent and friendly staff. Good breakfast.
The hotel is good value for money. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The hotel is lovely and nicely decorated.
Unique
Some of the museum
Love the quirky feel and atmosphere
You pay a little more but you get higher quality for it! Rooms were fantastic and comfy. Lovely bathroom. Easy parking right outside. Fabulous quiet location and easy walk into town. Believe the hype. Make sure you use the lift at every opportunity and explore the whole building and check the displays etc. The porch/veranda was amazing and if it’s good weather sitting there for breakfast is a must-do.
Nothing, it was perfect.
Staff and breakfast were great . Free parking .
Cost and a little further out to the main area . Disappointed with the vinyl room .
A great location on the cliff top away from the centre. Quirky and oldy worldly
Nothing
A quirky old style hotel with loads of character
The pool 😅
It was very unique
