Was not aware that I had to pay an extra £25 for the two childrens beds in the room. Was still worth the money, but would have been better if it was added to the initial booking.

Really enjoyed staying at this grand hotel with its beautiful gardens and excellent decor. Owners were very friendly and helpful. Excellent breakfast as well. We were sorry to leave.

Location was good in a very nice Victorian building. Staff/Owners were very helpful. Breakfast staff were very good.

No evening meal available but maybe that was an assumption on my part. Owners arranged a table at a local restaurant , close by , which was excellent, which more than made up for it.

When we arrived at check in times doors were locked and no one around good start not. Not shown or told anything about the hotel once able to check in. Not even shown to room and staff at reception did not appear welcoming. Mattress in room 7 is not good slopes to the sides, poor night's sleep thankfully only 1 night. Poor sheets on bed did not even cover the sides of mattress and came off overnight. Cobwebs around the room and shower glass had dark mold on it. No one around at check out to check our stay.

Would recommend for a wonderful and peaceful few days away from the routine and hustle and bustle. The house itself has so much history and character. The owners were attentive and welcoming. Sue made us a lovely lunch late into the afternoon on our arrival. Location was great as we visited Kelso and Melrose and went for a lovely drive to Selkirk. All in all would highly recommend.

A most attractive Victorian hotel. Extremely clean and welcoming.

Only one small thing, the breakfast wasn't the best. Both our fried eggs were really hard and mushrooms undercooked. Otherwise all was good.

A beautiful house set in private well established gardens. Gorgeous Victorian interior. Spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Very welcoming and helpful host. 5 min walk to the park & 10 mins into town. Would recommend to friends.

Great hotel for our overnight, our granchildren were able to run iff steam in the well cared for he grounds.

The location and gardens are beautiful. The room was large and the balcony looking over the gardens was great. The bathroom was clean and there were lots of towels and toiletries. The shower was also powerful with plenty of hot water. Breakfast was very good. Water provided in the room as the tap water isn't drinkable is thoughtful.

The bed was okay but felt a little too soft and I prefer softer mattresses. The decorative cushions, extra blankets and super thick duvet were a bit much for August, even in Scotland but we managed to throw the extra things off and slept reasonably well. The bedroom and bathroom are both quite dimly lit so doing make up was a challenge.

Before referring to what was not good about this hotel, the positives are the location, handy for the A7 and on the edge of Hawick, we used it as a base for exploring the Borders. The staff at breakfast were polite and attentive, and they are a credit to the hotel (more than can be said for the man on reception). Bed was comfy.

We arrived to be 'greeted' by a grumpy man on reception, who did not greet us with any kind of civil hello, and simply said 'name', we felt we were an inconvenience, and thankfully we did not see him again during the rest of our stay. The other issue was the level of cleaning in the room, which was a suite that had a kitchen area. Food from the previous guests was in the fridge when we arrived (clearly fridge had not been cleaned), and the cupboards below sink had cobwebs, there were also cobwebs on the ceiling lights and skylight.

Our flight was delayed and they kindly stayed and waited for us. The room was big enough and the beds comfy.

Comfortable room in a lovely property with attractive grounds. Situated opposite Wilton Lodge Park and a short walk to Hawick Museum and the town centre. Welcoming hosts, private car parking, good breakfast.

Only 2 clothes hangers in the room.

Poor welcome and checking in. No offer to help with luggage as I am disabled. Room certainly not worth £175 for the night Breakfast appalling, microwaved, requested 2 poached eggs got one fried. Checkout no one present so left key on the desk

Owners have done an amazing job of looking after this beautiful building. It's really lovely. Breakfast was great too.

I thought the Balcary was a lo ely traditional hotel. The staff were lovely amd very welcoming. I had a fabulous big room looking over the gardens, vety good facilities in the room.

I have no complaints.

Location was very good, short walk to the centre, bar prices very reasonable.

We were greeted by both owners, lady was polite and helpful, gentleman seemed very surly and never acknowledged us. Bed was very uncomfortable, dipping at both sides, no support, new mattress needed.

There was a bath in the room but no plug that allowed the water to stay in, so why have a bath in the room??? Disappointing. The breakfast order was wrong, so food was wasted. Staff were nonchalant but pleasant. For such a beautiful building, the room was "too modern". Had to ask for milk for the hospitality tray.

It was ok but the place felt a bit neglected, and ultimately not very welcoming.

In die Jahre gekommen. Riecht alt. Bett unbequem. Wackelt bei jeder Bewegung hin und her. Ausserdem war das Zustellbett für das Kind war Nahe am Boden. Eine Feder war kaputt.

Pity no evening meal served we would have preferred to stay at the hotel for the one night we were there. Im afraid we are not dog lovers so thr three dogs was a bit over the top for us but otherwise loved the house.

Ein wunderschönes Hotel in herrlich ruhiger Lage. Wir hatten einen rundum gelungenen Aufenthalt mit unserem Hund. Statt im Haupthaus waren wir in einer der hinter dem Gebäude gelegenen Lodges untergebracht – für uns als Hundebesitzer war das besonders praktisch. Die Unterkunft war geschmackvoll eingerichtet, sehr sauber und bestens ausgestattet. Auch das Haupthaus hat uns mit seiner liebevollen Einrichtung begeistert. Dort haben wir jeden Morgen ein köstliches Frühstück in einer sehr angenehmen Atmosphäre genossen. Das gesamte Personal war ausgesprochen freundlich und aufmerksam. Am Abend konnten wir den Tag entspannt im Garten ausklingen lassen und dabei einen leckeren Drink von der Bar genießen. Die Lage ist ebenfalls ideal, da der Wilton Lodge Park ganz in der Nähe liegt und sich hervorragend für Spaziergänge eignet. Wir waren rundum zufrieden und können das Balcary House Hotel uneingeschränkt weiterempfehlen. Negatives gibt es aus unserer Sicht überhaupt nichts zu sagen.

Es handelt sich um ein schönes atmosphärisches und großzügiges Landhaus mit klassisch eingerichteten Zimmern. Alles war frisch renoviert und sauber. Das Personal war nett und aufmerksam.

Comfortable bed, nice garden view. Electric shower was good (but terrifyingly loud!). Very friendly breakfast team, provided gluten-free bread options. Free parking for 2 motorcycles, Easy walk into the town, would recommend the Santa Marina restaurant (especially for coeliacs).

Restaurant onsite but we were not able to use it as a party of 8 were already booked in and we were informed there would 'not be much left'! Limited continental breakfast options (8 am start). Hardly any electrical sockets in the room and they were mostly in use for appliances. Could do with an update/modernisation.

It is a small hotel with only 9 rooms. Our room and all the public areas were very smart and well maintained.

De locatie van dit hotel is prachtig. Mooie oprijlaan. Prachtige tuinen en parkje. Overal knusse zitplaatsen. Het was ontspannen en rustig. Ook binnen was het prachtig. Het hotel beschikt over verschillende vertrekken waar je gezellig kunt zitten.. Onze kamer lag op de eerste verdieping.. bereikbaar via een prachtig trappenhuis kamer grootte prima! Badkamer met ligbad. Grote kamer met zithoek en balkon waar we dan ook heerlijk hebben gezeten. Het echtpaar wat het hotel runt of beheert zijn super vriendelijk en behulpzaam. De eigenaresse heeft voor ons avondeten op verzoek gemaakt en we hadden gezellige gesprekken! Hun hondjes lopen gezellig rond. Het ontbijt was top verzorgd. Op verzoek warm eten bij het ontbijt.

Het matras was iets doorgelegen maar ik ben rug hernia patiënt. En er waren te weinig stopcontacten. Maar verder geen op/aanmerkingen.

No wardrobe

The owners Sue and David were friendly and welcoming. Much needed as our group of five motorcyclists arrived tired and weary. The house was very well maintained. Rooms were modern and well appointed. Lounge area was comfortable. Sue helped organise a lovely Chinese take-away meal as we arrived too late for dinner. A great place to stay.

Breakfast cooked to order, well cooked and presented. Hotel in a quiet location outside the town and away from the main road. Spacious 4 poster bedroom.

No hotel information, ie breakfast time, wi-fi code in the room. Toilet lid missing, toilet seat ill fitting. Lid of shower gel wouldn’t screw on, no shampoo. Frugal tea/coffee items. Comfortable sitting for only one person in the bedroom.

Breakfast was poor and service seemed a bit disorganised. They’d run out of tomatoes which seems a very basic thing to have available for breakfast.

Very “grumpy” greeting on check-in. Member of staff appeared to be total uninterested in providing any sort of welcome, not a very good impression made.

Im Vorfeld der Anreise keine Antworten auf Anfragen. Gefühlt ein eher kühles Ambiente/Klima in der Unterkunft obwohl alle Angestellen nett waren

Lovely big, bright room with an enormous bathroom. Exceptionally clean. Peaceful location. Bob The Chef was really friendly and great to chat to.

The welcome from the gentleman was a little 'cold' without much of a smile or any form of friendly chat about our journey etc, which we like to do, as it makes us feel welcome when arriving anywhere.

Toilet seat didn’t fit the toilet properly which was strange, it didn’t move or anything like that. The seat should have been on a smaller toilet. And needs to update the hairdryers in rooms, very gutless takes ages to dye your hair.

All the little extra things like.. hairdryer, kettle, choice/brand of tea coffee in rooms, these could all be upgraded to fit in with the 'feel' of the place. Bed sheet could be a 'deep fit' to cover mattress. Positioning of tv & furniture in room could be thought through more Breakfast... the bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes felt boiled or something rather than grilled/fried. All little things but would make the stay an excellent rating as Balcary House is beautiful.

The restaurant was closed at 6pm every night as it meant either ordering a "Takeaway" or walking or driving somewhere for an evening meal.
