The villa is amazing for a 2 day getaway. It's spacious and has an incredible vibe to it. The private onsen was an amazing experience. The breakfast was a great culinary experience
The food options were a bit lacking. It wasn't just the villa the whole town seemed like it didn't have enough variety. Which is why I say 2 days is the perfect amount of time here.
A stunning villa surrounded by beautiful nature, offering complete peace and privacy. The private onsen in our villa was truly amazing and made the stay unforgettable. The kaiseki dinner was exceptional — one of the best we’ve ever had. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout our stay.
It’s hardly a concern, but in a villa for four, having a few more places to plug in devices would be convenient. Truly a very minor detail in an otherwise perfect stay.
The atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing, and the beautiful surroundings made the stay very special. The staff were exceptionally kind, welcoming, and helpful. They also went out of their way to accommodate my dietary requirements and made sure suitable meals were available for me. I truly appreciated their care, flexibility, and excellent hospitality.
Nothing in particular. Everything was well arranged and the staff were always ready to help whenever needed.
Amazing villa with private onsen. Immersed in the nature. Peaceful. Many amenities, staff friendly and accommodating ! We loved our stay.
This is the highlight stay for us in Japan. Loved the chalet and the entire atmosphere of the resort. I loved our private onsen in the room that is indoor and can open the window and make it a bit outdoor. The entire facility is beautiful and is the middle of nature. We loved the experience of the Japanese dinner and I also loved they have western option for dinner. The buffet for breakfast is good. They provide a cart for transportation and they are present in your chalet almost immediately when you call. Very attentive to details. Their shuttle can drop you to main road to get the bus. Staff were very helpful to accommodate our diet restrictions.
They are very strict with dinner time that you have to pick ahead of time. But I guess that’s the culture in Japan
Amazing property with private onsen and lovely little villa. Just what we were looking for to relax and unwind after a busy trip. Great dinners at the two restaurants on the property. Walking distance to a self-laundry for those who have been traveling a while. Got massages at the spa which were much needed but the best part was definitely our private onsen which we used multiple times a day!
Not really a lunch option on the property - had some relatively tasty frozen pizzas from the little cafe but would have been nice to have more options on the property even just a bowl of noodles.
The food the scenery the rooms and the spa
I wish there were sandwiches available at the cafe
the location was nice and a cool room
the onsen in the room was cold when we arrived, we asked them to please heat it and they said they would but still cold. next morning we asked them again and they said okay, 30 min before check out time they said it was broken and we could use the one in another room. but the whole point of paying this much for a room is to have the onsen so you can enjoy it in the evening as you please. so huge dissatisfaction and ruined the trip unfortunately
Amazing property, fantastic views, the private onsen was great to plunge and relax at random times of the day. The staff were all exceptional they all made us feel so welcome and relaxed.
We didn’t like leaving the property we were all so sad!!!

El trato excelente y la casa magnífica. La cena muy buena y bien atendida
No teníamos agua caliente en cierto momento
Room, onsen in the room, dining room
It has a very nice equipped room with all that you need. Very child friendly and a very nice staff.
Fantastic facilities and a beautiful place
Service isn’t great and the food is terrible.
Modern but traditional
None
Wonderful place. The villa was super comfortable, with all needed amenities. The onsen is a big plus. We enjoyed very much. We took a Japanese dinner that was very tasty and beautifully presented. The staff was very polite and attentive
Very beautiful
They had some issues with the hot water beside all was great
Location, food
Pricey, isolated, this was good but bad for transportation
I stayed in this hotel several times already, so I decided to take my friend who was visiting Japan the first time here as well. The location is great - quiet tranquil place helps relaxing after the whole week of exploring Japan. The villas are great and have pretty nice amenities. Both Japanese and Western dinner courses were delicious! The staff was very helpful and attentive. The place is located in the very heart of Hakone, so you can easily reach most of its sights.
Majority of the staff members were great, however some of them are noticeably less attentive. We waited for the staff member during one of the breakfasts after the dessert, but they never came even though we've pushed the call button 4 times. Western dinner portions could be a bit bigger.
Staff were very friendly and tried hard but they clearly lack the proper training. Co-ordination between different staff wasn’t very good.

The most gorgeous place we stayed at on our Japan trip. The resort is so beautiful and the villa a dream. Shame we could only stay one night. The private onsen was pure luxury as were the outdoor spaces and facilities. The only thing I would comment on is that the lady we had for Japanese dinner service seemed to either not be so knowledgeable or did not speak very much English as we did not get such good explanation about the food served.
Information about dinner served.
Great stay pretty and secluded
Nothing to hate
Very good retreat the crew was very polite
Beautiful forest grounds setting. Beautiful architecture. Private Onsens.
Some things are showing some signs of wear and tear. The bluetooth in the room. The golf carts were somewhat worn. The breakfast buffet was okay. Price was premium.
The onsen bath:))))
Maybe a bit remote and lonely; not much to do - only baths:). Nice if you have a private one; but water is quite hot (40 degrees) so it will not last long, the pleasure. And what’s next? They don’t have even bicycles, and to walk around you can do in 15- 20 minutes:). To go to Hakone takes about 40 min by bus and maybe about 20 -30 min by uber:). Walking in silence and reading are the options:)
The atmosphere service and site itself is sublime. The Japanese meals were delightful and presented in an immaculate style, the villa itself came equipped with drinks coffee tea and a private onsen, everything we needed. Getting there without driving is not hard, but it is quite far away, and journey took longer than we anticipated. They gave us free socks!
The staff are very welcoming. Throughout the stay, the staff would drive us to places when required. They picked us up from the bus stop, and dropped us off to the bus stop after we checked out. Mr. Yoshihito, Isami was very caring, and kindly drove my partner to the drug store a bit further away on the day when I was not well. The whole place is very clean. The private onsen was amazing. The western breakfast buffet was great. The massage and facial is highly recommended as well. We also enjoyed the fireplace and the unlimited wood supplied.
After the Japanese style breakfast, I was nauseated all day, and vomited in the afternoon. (My husband who had the exact same food did not have any problem though).
Everything
More fresh pastries please @ breakfast.
The staff were really kind! The room was clean with everything needed! And the private Onsen was the best with very pleasant temperature all night long. Will visit again!
The room itself was beautiful, comfortable and relaxing!
There was no food options outside of breakfast and dinner, we arrived at around 1pm and were told there was nothing to eat until dinner time, it is a secluded location so there isn't really any options to go elsewhere - however the staff did drive us to 7/11 - but not what id expect from a 5* hotel. A limited dinner menu and very expensive. Options for different meat were at an additional cost - tiny portion sizes. Coffee was the worst I have tasted during my 2 week trip around Japan. We booked massages too, which were costly, and there was only 1 therapist so myself and husband had to go at separate times which I didn't like, as it meant one of us alone in the room whilst the other way away. Staff were fairly helpful, but quite cold and unwelcoming. It felt like they had a system to adhere to and they did, but not much real human connection or warmth. The room itself made up for the above, but compared to the rest of our trip through Japan this was very underwhelming and absolutely not worth the cost
Well kept and beautiful. Serene. Steep walk to villa from reception or entrance of the property, but staff was always willing and waiting to take you to your rooms, restaurant, lounge via cart.
Our onsen wasn’t working properly for a moment but staff was super quick to come and check it out and send over a maintenance person to fix the issue. They were very timely and responsive
Onsen çok iyiydi
Personel yeterince yardımcı olmsdı
Beautiful hotel set in hillside woods. Every chalet/lodge has private facilities and is not overlooked. Excellent restaurant - you can choose either traditional Japanese fare or ‘fireside’ international dining - both were excellent. Golf carts used to transport guests around as some lodges are a little far away from the main centre.
It was all excellent.
The staff was super friendly and quick to assist. The villa was clean, comfy, and very cozy. The Onsen was clean and very relaxing.
The villa i picked with the outdoor onsen, indoors was more of a western style. A Japanese style with tatami would've been nicer.
Beautiful rooms, kind staff, great facilities and amazing value for money! Looking forward to return here!!
We liked the privacy in the villas. The water in the Onsen is nice and has a great temperature (can be adjusted). The continental restaurant is very good and has a beautiful setting with views into the forest/garden. Food is excellent including a large selection for breakfast. The Japanese restaurant has private dining rooms. Staff is accommodating and helpful but there are language barriers (not many speak English well enough).
From the villas it is a 10 minute walk to the continental restaurant along a road and past parking areas… not exactly scenic. Our first villa was very dark but luckily staff were able to set us up in a different one with more light. Both of these villas looked somewhat dated and do need to be refreshed and renovated. Some furniture and appliances are very used and not up to the standard of a luxury ryokan. Cleanliness was ok but spotty, details were missed. Breakfast and dinner times are very rigid. We didn’t like to have to decide in advance at what time we’d like to have breakfast or dinner two days later.

Magical location. We loved our spacious villa with its private onsen.
Nothing
The scenery is beautiful. Private onsen was lovely and architecture is nice.
The villa needs some maintenance. Stains on some furniture & carpet.
We stayed for 2 nights in a comfortable cottage with a private onsen. Sitting in the hot water of the private open-air onsen was an amazing experience. But the highlight was the Kaiseki dinner. Every dish was like a small work of art, beautifully presented, with delicate and perfectly balanced flavors. It was much more than just a meal; it was a complete culinary experience: a huge variety of small dishes, each one different and surprising in its own way. Everything was exceptionally delicious.
The Western-style dinner was absolutely delicious, and the room was beautiful and very comfortable.
It’s not very easy to get a taxi.
The villa number 5 is amazing and the apartments are tidy. And that's pretty much it, unfortunately.
We stayed at Hakone Retreat Villa 1F expecting a unique luxury experience given the extremely high price point (around €1,500 per night for our villa), but unfortunately the reality was deeply disappointing. The property itself, particularly Villa 5 with its private onsen, is lovely. However, everything else around the experience falls far below the standards expected from a hotel positioning itself as a luxury retreat. The biggest issue was the service and overall management. The acting manager seemed completely unable to handle even basic guest requests or situations professionally. Ironically, the only person who genuinely tried to help throughout our stay was a young trainee receptionist, who appeared far more competent, proactive and customer-oriented than the manager himself. It was honestly uncomfortable to watch how frequently she was dismissed or undermined despite being the only staff member actually trying to solve problems. The food experience was another major disappointment. After spending time in Tokyo enjoying outstanding Japanese cuisine — from proper omakase experiences to fantastic small local restaurants — the dinner here was genuinely shocking. Much of the Japanese food felt like supermarket-quality items taken directly from a refrigerator and placed onto small plates. For a luxury ryokan-style experience, this was simply unacceptable. Breakfast management was equally absurd. One of us wanted the Japanese breakfast while the other preferred a Western breakfast, and the proposed “solution” from staff was essentially that we should eat separately. Completely ridiculous for a hotel at this level. To make matters even more frustrating, before arrival we had specifically been told by the acting manager that choosing dining options later on would not be an issue and that having dinner around 7 pm would be perfectly possible.
The accommodations, dining, and customer service were excellent and exceeded my expectations.
Other than the location which was far from other attractions, I have no complaints.
Absolutely everything. The location, the staff, the breakfast, the dinner and all the facilities! The private onsen was fantastic. The 5 course dinners at the property (both Japanese and Western) were delicious. The staff especially were very caring and attentive.
Nothing
The aesthetics and the atmosphere of the room with the skylight above the window and having a fireplace. Also the breakfast / dining room area had a good vibe and feel to it.
The open air bath could be cleaner, there were a lot of residue from the nearby trees that we were not able to take out with the net. Also there were multiple dead spiders around the bathroom sink and living room area.
We stayed at villa 7 in spring and it was a beautiful space. My 6 year old loved the meal arrangement (we booked half board); while we had a wonderful kaiseki meal, he had a huge meal served early with a great variety that he thoroughly enjoyed. Service staff were very friendly and accommodating.
Nothing that I didn’t like but they are very particular about timing (eg. If you book the meal at 6pm, you prob should be there by 5.50pm) so it’s just something to be mindful of
The atmosphere and how well isolated but convenient at the same time
One minor thing, the curtains at the private in villa Onsen was stuck.
Beautiful property. Highly recommend if you want a relaxing getaway surrounded by nature
The villa was modern, area incredibly peaceful, relatively easy access thanks to public transport. Loved the private onsen. The cafe, shared terrace space, and onsen were also nice.
The service was sometimes awkward. The staff in charge of my check in questioned my Japanese and commented on my physique, not believing I was Japanese. I found that extremely rude. Some staff seemed also shy and scared and made the experience awkward at times. Most of them were fine, just one Chinese member which was awkward and making unwanted comments. Not « out of this world » inappropriate, but not the type of micro-aggression I want to experience when paying an expensive stay and during a get away to relax. One big minus was the temperature in the villa. It was very warm and it could not be adjusted. We did not sleep well because of that.
Meals were wonderful and the onsen was so nice.
Longer ride from train station then expected. Pretty minor issue.
The room was spacious
Pretty much everything else
It feels very private. The fire place is cool but the wood they give you burns in a minutes so you spend a lot of time getting wood and feeding the fire. Someone should let them know about
This is the 2nd time I have stayed here and I felt their quality had gone down from my previous trip. The food was good but was once amazing. You now eat in a restaurant. Before they brought the food to your room. It’s still very nice to stay here I was just a bit let down they had decreased their service quality.
The best accommodation during our Japan trip! The whole facility is outstanding and the villas were tastefully designed with big spaces, have a lot of privacy and are extremely comfortable. I felt deeply relaxed after staying here for two days. We went into our private onsen at least three times a day and just listened to nature and the surroundings. The Japanese breakfast and dinners were phenomenal. Would 100% recommend.
Beware that if you choose this accommodation as your first stop in Japan, everything else will feel mediocre.
