The gardens are stunning. The style of the rooms with traditional tatami matting etc. is incredible.
1. Inflexibility. It felt almost like being detained. Waking times, meal times, menus, etc. were forced on us as ‘guests’ and were absolutely rigid with no choice or flexibility whatsoever. We were a party of 5, with one couple in a large family room (which had meals served in the room) and the other members in smaller rooms which dined in the restaurant. When we asked if we could eat in the restaurant (which had loads of spare space) with our party, we were told “No. Not possible”, in rude brief terms. So we asked if they could eat at the large table in our room with us instead “No. Not possible”. When we asked for an explanation of why - one word rude answer “system”. This might work for local tourists, but for European guests used to freedom and choice it was maddening. The stay was as far from enjoyable and relaxing as it was possible to be. We felt like unwanted detainees. 2. The food. We are a well travelled party, from various international locations and well used to experimenting with unusual foods, and are used to eating sashimi and Japanese dishes. The set Ryokan dinner and breakfast take ‘unusual’ to another level. Multiple courses of (honestly) revolting small dishes becomes an absolute ordeal before long. In one meal we were served jellied cubes of conger eel, boiled turtle and cold melon jelly with popping fish eggs (photo below). Some of the most disgusting things I’ve ever tried. We like world foods and trying new things and didn’t want pop tarts or full English, but cold jellied fish eggs at 7:30 am (after you’ve been woken up by the maid telling you to get out of bed & ordered to sit down for breakfast) is hard work. On the 2nd morning we said we couldn’t eat 5 courses of jellied fish for breakfast and asked if it was possible to have tea & fruit instead.
Brilliant traditional Japanese experience. The evening meal was exceptionally good. The outdoor Onsen was amazing.
The staff was so attentive, friendly to foreigners, and kind. The meals were unique and plentiful. The facilities were very clean and maintained. The scenery, property, and areas was incredibly beautiful. We felt highly pampered and truly enjoyed the onsen!
There is little access to taxis or transportation for large groups for the area, however that is not the fault of the property management.
L atmosfera, il personale molto gentile, l esperienza autentica

Quietness. Big garden. Dining is good.
Public onsen is not open air. However you can pay to book your private one. Parking is not very convenient. Staff helps to park faraway so will need to request the key and car ahead of time.
In such a beautiful area, I will definitely come back on my next trip!
I loved everything.
Cannot beat the service and views
Facility definitely showed its age, but it wasn’t a huge negative
The location
The accomodation is very old.
Me gustó el Onsen. Habia Onsen bajo techo y al aire libre.
Gargantuesque
The dinner, onsen and futon experience was wonderful. Staff was really welcoming and friendly.
The balcony was dirty. It was difficult to find the place, only a small sign for the hotel in the bushes. I hoped for a privet onsen (let it be really small) for the price I paid.
We couldn’t choose a better place to relax after 5 busy days in Tokyo. The location was easily connected to the bus stop which took us both to Lake Ashi and the Open Air Museum. We were impressed by the staff, everyone was extremely kind and helpful. Fantastic food experience. Everything on a high level - will be back next time when we’re in Japan!
We loved everything and couldn’t recommend it enough.
It is a beautiful resort with thermal baths. We had a room with a view to a nice garden
I had a brilliant time at Senkyoro, which is both luxurious and rooted in tradition. No temptation to overly modernise here, it's a fantastic and reliable look at true Japanese countryside living. Staff were brilliant, so attentive, and made a great job of popping into my room to set it up for the day / evening whilst I was out at the onsen / breakfast / dinner. Speaking of which both the outdoor and indoor onsens are excellent. Some western guests have mentioned the breakfast is not to their tastes, but you've got to understand that's just because the breakfast is so legitimately authentic. I would implore everyone to stay here. The location is also superb, particularly for getting the bus.

Amazing stay, friendly staff and total Japanese experience !!!
Nothing
We loved our stay - the room, location, onsen, extraordinary meals, and the most wonderful staff. Nizumi looked after us very kindly.
Amazing location, atmosphere, authenticity, cleanliness and polite staff.

Great, special traditional Japanese hotel. The room was perfect, wonderful view, the team was welcoming and the breakfast was unique and one of a kind of an experience . The onsen was also wonderful ( we took a private one)
It was perfect! The room was beautiful Japanese style room with a view to the forest/garden and waterfall. We kept the windows open an we enjoyed the sound of the waterfall and birds. Absolutely magical. The futon bed was comfy, and we also enjoyed the private onsen. Oh and the best part was the dinner! It was like fine dining experience, very delicious and interesting food. And also breakfast! It was such a unique experience - all of it together! The staff was very professional and welcoming. We loved our stay at this ryokan, and we felt very relaxed afterwards.
Can’t think of anything!
The ryokan was very clean and authentic, the Japanese-style dining was a nice experience, area around is green and picturesque. The bus stop is located just near the hotel, so you can take a round bus and explore Hakone.
exceptional character, beautiful and peaceful onsen, lovely staff and great meals
Booking.com could have been clearer that the ryokan does not normally accept solo travellers so I ended up paying the same rate as for two people.
The authentic experience, with a great service and brilliant food!
The food was incredible, restaraunt quality, if not better. Stayed 3 days and got incredible variety. The rooms were super comfortable and warm. Staff were incredibly friendly and hard working. Will be back
Good option to rent the onsen for 1 hour. Nice, clean rooms, beautiful surroundings , hospitable staff
Food was traditional Japanese so it was interesting to try it. It was also very interesting to stay in Japanese room and sleep on a futon and wear traditional Japanese clothes. We loved the traditional onsen. The bus stop was right in front of the hotel so it was convenient to get places.
Since mostly Japanese were there, much of the signage was in Japanese. We weren't told that the onsen would be closed for cleaning in the morning and went there. I went into the women's onsen and there was a man cleaning but there was no closed sign in front of the entrance.
Beautiful location
Gorgeous onsen, with 2 privates baths for those with tattoos, and several different public baths. Sleeping on the tatami was fun, and they provided yukatas for the guests. Room and bathroom was very clean. Sashimi was very fresh.
Meals (both dinner and breakfast) were EXTREMELY traditional and very uncompromising. Almost all courses included fish. It is a set menu but I would say extremely challenging food. There is no à la carte options. Breakfast was also extremely traditional, 7 (not exaggerating) types of fish for breakfast. It was not easy, for the second night we were there we ate onigiri in our room for dinner as couldn’t face the menu again. We did not have breakfast our second day.
The onsen, which is exactly as seen in the pictures!
Breakfast was exclusively traditional Japanese and no adjustments could be made, so as someone that doesn’t eat some types of fish or any sea food, I couldn’t really have almost any of it; it was also a bit too formal for my liking
It’s a very nice location and the room itself was clean and very big (for Japanese standards). The food was also very well taken care off and the staff was friendly.
However, the hotel needs renovating. The hallway and elevator were very outdated and the onsen facilities could use an updo. For the price we paid, we expected a bit more than this.
The hotel was located right next to the bus stop, close to convenience store and other interesting locations, such as Ryukozan Choanji, Sotoshu Hanano Temple. The highlight was its picturesque free onsen, which could've been visited almost 24/7 and japanese style breakfast and dinners. The surrounding garden was also very nice. The rooms were traditional, which was also a nice experience, including traditional clothing that you could wear throughout the hotel. It was an amazing place to relax in rural Japan.
It was well located and big.
Very 70s style quite rigid a but old school for my state and
The hotel is simply beautiful! The rooms are cozy, and we loved the traditional Japanese experience. The dinner is INCREDIBLE! Have no words enough to praise it!
Breakfeast if VERY traditional, which means you are going to eat fish, soup, and tofu in the morning. Maybe amazing for some, but for us it was a bit too much... But we understand that it is part of the experience, but not our favorite. However, a point down was the lack of help during our check-out. It was a rainy day, and we were with our 6 yo daughter, so we decided it would be better to take a taxi from the ryokan to the station. We asked the front desk for some help, since Uber was taking a long time. Their answer: we cannot help, no taxis are running at this time (it was around 9 am), only in the afternoon, you need to go down at take the bus. In the rain, with no umbrella (and no support offered at all...). For our surprise, when waiting the bus outside, we saw not one, but several taxi passing by...
+ Great place to be immersed in nature. + Incredibly comfortable stay. + Great value for money. + Easy transportation from Hakone-Yumoto Station. + The food was phenomenal, dinner and breakfast. If you want a traditional spread of local and national Japanese delicacies, don't miss this.
Nothing I don't like, but have two points to consider for what it means to stay in a traditional ryokan: - The onsen area is simple. There are no multiples pools or massage facilities inside. Check the images carefully. It's what you get. - Your room will be prepared and arranged by employees when you are in the restaurant area. Be mindful.
Staying in a traditional Japanese room with a private onsen was such a great experience. The room was cozy, featuring a private annex and a lovely bath. I must say, the water was really hot! We actually had to cool it down a bit with the hose they provided. I highly recommend having a private onsen; not only can you regulate the temperature to your liking, but it’s much more comfortable since you have to be completely naked. We were well-received throughout our entire stay. It was a bit strange for us to have someone constantly serving us—they escorted us to our room, served us tea, dinner, and breakfast, and even prepared and cleared our futon beds. Despite being on the floor, the futons were very comfortable to sleep in. They also provided yukatas for us to wear. The kaiseki meals were beautifully presented and offered a unique experience that everyone should try at least once
While it was a great experience overall, there were a few things in the kaiseki meals that didn't quite appeal to us or suit our tastes. However, we ate everything! They provided us the menu for dinner, which was great for us to understand what we were eating. Unfortunately, we didn't receive one for breakfast, which would have been nice as well. It is definitely different from what we are used to as Western tourists, but I recommend it anyway. One side note: the piano in the main hall really needs to be tuned.
Everyone here is really welcoming, polite. We had a Japanese style room and we loved it. All the pastries and appetisers left everyday for us were so so delicious, I’ve tried to buy some at the stores but I couldn’t find them (such a shame). We loved so much the onsens that we booked a private one for us. The menus are exquisite!
We’ve arrived at night and didn’t see the name « Senkyoro » in front of the hotel and we googled only the address and not the name of the hotel, which led us to another place… So scary. But the hotel was super nice, I called them, they found us and drove us to the hotel (much needed after a long flight).
Le camere spaziose, pulite e tradizionali allo stesso tempo.
