Purple Hen Country Lodge

Thank you so much for leaving milk, tea and coffee for us. Also, all the extras like oil to cook with in the kitchen, mustard and tomato sauce in the fridge. The kitchen area was warm; so were the bedrooms. Mostly I loved how quiet it was.

Access to the bathroom and toilets was off the corridor not from the room a disappointment given the daily cost

Only one comment - a lower than the bed wee stool, seat or chair in the bedroom would be fab for putting on and lacing up shoes

Was a great location to stay for the Katikati Avocado Festival. Easy trip to and from the event, plus the bonus of the Chrome cafe being very handy for breakfast the next morning.

While we had our private bathroom was a bit of a nuisance having to go out into the public area to access it, rather than a conventional en suite.

The host, was very helpful, let us check in early.

The owners, Andrea and Rupert were clear about directions, accommodating, and helpful. Appreciate their warm welcome and their kindness.

I had wished the accommodation was a short distance from the township to walk, but the drive was only 10mins away.

The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The laundry facilities were excellent, and Andrea returned from a local trip to help us resolve a starting issue with the tumble drier. This was very much appreciated.

The kitchen was situated in another facility, so unable to access a drink or water during the night.

The location was so serene and beautiful. Lovely outdoor areas to walk around in. Hosts were so lovely and welcoming.

The location was excellent. We loved waking in the morning to birdsong. The facilities were great especially the kitchen. It was lovely to be able to walk about in the orchard, see the hens and the countryside. Great for families and groups.

Peace and quiet. Large rooms. Huge shared kitchen. Lovely to be met by the hosts. Plenty of areas to roam around.

Warm dry and comfy room and met the needs for us just needing a place to rest, get cleaned up and head out the next day. The shared kitchen facility was also really nice

After a long day the distance to drive out to the accommodation from the event we was at. A small lamp in room would be great for late nights - as didn’t want to use the main light.

Our host was warm and welcoming. The common area fondly reminded me of my days going to summer camp. I got incredible pictures of the starry night sky.

The weather was terrible but the owners came out to greet us and help us with luggage. We were shown around and given homemade baking. They had pre heated our rooms by turning on the heat pumps.

An extra blanket for the beds would have been perfect.

Very small inconvenience that my shower/lavatory is not ensuite but immediately nearby in the lobby. I was happy with that. This is budget accommodation and not a motel.

The location was perfect for me ,quiet peaceful and beautiful setting.

Bigger sign or more visible sign from turn off from main road ,didn’t have GPS and drove straight up the road for a km or two passing it.

The nearby but out of town location was wonderful. The apartment was large, beautifully furnished and very comfortable.

The steep stairs could be a problem. No Milk in the fridge.

The host were very welcoming beautiful orchards to walk around the facilities were awesome and very clean definitely be back.

Andrea & Rupert welcomed us on arrival & showed us to our room, the room was separate to our toilet & shower, this would be better if access was off our room as my mum is in her eighties & wasn't comfortable leaving our room throughout the night. Beds could be a bit more comfortable. Very tranquil, peaceful location with only a close drive into town. Well equipped kitchen with recycling & compost bins in place, love that! TV in the bedroom would have been great. Thank you Andrea & Rupert

Accommodation in lovely peaceful environment. You can take a stroll in the avocado orchard of the owners. Very pleasant on a warm summer day! Very friendly hosts that gave us recommendations for things to visit in the surroundings and taught us a lot about avocado’s 😊

The Purple Hen was spacious with a very large kitchen and entertainment room. The bed was very comfortable. The hosts were very welcoming and hospitable.

Sorry guys. I guess it was my mistake to assume we’d have the same accommodation as we enjoyed the last time we visited, but no, we were given the backpackers’ quarters, not the upstairs room. Lucky we were the only occupants as we are long past sharing. Felt it was a bit overpriced for a backpacker’s room.

Loved everything about our stay. Great location, hospitable owners, beautiful grounds, cute chickens. Clean room and comfy bed, not en-suite but private bathroom for every room, hot shower with very good shower pressure, lovely common kitchen and lounge areas. Would have stayed longer had we could!

A nice quiet rural location with a large garden and avocado's in abundance. The room was nice and clean. Communal facilities were good and we had our own allocated bathroom. Would stay again. Thank you.

A bit of a drive to eat out but that's typical of many places in New Zealand.

The property is a little quiet paradise surrounded by nature. The owners were very welcoming and showed us everything. We even had some milk and freshly picked plums in our refrigerator.

The quietest place I've stayed at in ages , very relaxing. Nice rural location near Katikati. Surrounded with interesting trees, plants , small avocado orchard , with a help yourself to windfalls policy for avocadoes (super tasty tree ripened).

The location was nice, quiet, and welcoming. Enjoyed the gardens and the grounds to walk around on and the avocados! Hosts were lovely and helpful. Everything was clean and tidy nice space to stay in.

Bed was a little hard for us is really the only thing.

Comfortable bed. Good bed covers. Spacious bedroom and bathroom. Communal kitchen is very clean and well equipped. Quiet location but near Tauranga, Paeroa and Thames.

One bathroom for each bedroom but accessible through lobby, not ensuite.

We truly enjoyed our stay at the Purple Hen. The hosts were super kind and ready to help with any requests (they live at the property). The location was very handy (a 5 min drive to the supermarket and town) and the place was just divine, with lots of grass and nature (including many avocado trees!). The kitchen and living spaces (which are shared) were clean, and spacious and had everything you would need to cook. The hosts even provide a few basics (salt, oil, spices, tea, coffee, sugar, etc) and also throw in some fresh eggs in your own fridge (each room has a designated fridge/freezer and a cupboard to store groceries).

The only negative (and just because I'm struggling to find negatives) is the lack of a bedside table in our room (4) and lack of a little shelf/table to put stuff in the toilet (i.e. no place to put toiletries as the sink is small). But again, that's just being picky, the place is great!

I liked the hosts, they were exceptionally friendly, even though we checked in after 12 midnight the lady was still there and guided us to our rooms in the pouring rain. Plus we checked out a little late and they did not give us a hard time about. Loved it! Definitely recommend for groups of friends or big families travelling to Tauranga that likes peace and quiet.

The bathroom is not shared but not in the room. The sheets are bit weird, I had a lot of red spots after sleeping in it.

Set in lovely quiet gardens with an avocado orchard you can walk around. The room was spacious spacious and very clean. Rupert even got a desk and chair for me to work on my laptop. Lovely place and hosts would love to come back.

Beautiful and peaceful location, we loved walking thru the orchard. The hosts where lovely very hospitable. The only issue was our matresses. Abit lumpy. Loved the stay will book again

Very quiet and clean . Beautiful surroundings and only like 3 mins drive from the main road.

The owners were friendly. Its a nice walk around the property with Avocado Orchard and Bamboo trees. There's a walkway by the water the goes through the property. There are two large shared areas besides the sleeping rooms. The game room had a large TV with Disney and Netflix. They had a handicapp accessible ramp/ walkway up to the rooms. A cafe is on the corner close by that had a descent breakfast and baked goods.

The Purple Hen is a gorgeous country house set in a cute little avocado orchard. Andrea and Rupert were warm and welcoming hosts who made us feel right at home. The upstairs apartment we had was clean and comfortable with our own kitchette, tv lounge, and 4-poster bed. We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely consider staying again next time we are in this part of the country!

Stunning location and beautiful grounds. I loved being able to go straight out into the grounds and walk around the avocado orchard and lake and look at the flowers and birds. So peaceful. The hosts were lovely and welcoming. Very comfortable. Delicious eggs and plums!

Just a bit easy to hear sounds from the room next door when they arrived late

The room was spacious and the bed comfortable. Shower was great. Bedside table would have been useful and more homely. And shampoo etc in the shower.

Every thing, this place is so good for groups

Part of the charm was that anything not perfect was part of that charm.

The place was absolutely stunning outside and we loved the camping feel of the whole place. The owners were so helpful and kind too.

My girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Purple Hen. I have stayed before with my family and loved it just as much then. Andrea and Rupert are always incredibly welcoming and friendly. The room was clean and comfortable, the lounge was cozy, the shower and kitchen were great. We will definitely be back for years to come.

We have stayed at the purple Hen before and enjoyed it then and again this time. We would definitely recommend it to family and friends, great atmosphere, very comfortable, superb surroundings, great facilities, and very ideal central location but in a rural setting

This is a wonderful place to stay. We only had one night here but this would be a wonderful place to take a few days to decompress after a week or two of being on the road, traveling NZ. The kitchen is huge with plenty of space. Each room has its own full size fridge and we had a private bathroom. The bathroom is not en suite but right next door and comes with a key so you can lock your things away if you wish. The property is beautiful, quiet, and has 200 avocado trees that you can walk under and relax. The public areas are very clean and the rooms are a good size. The location is in the county with a small town near by. The hosts were very kind and responsive. This is a nice out of the way place that I would love to visit again.

It was exceptionally clean. Both the bathroom and kitchen. The shower was amazing great water pressure and great heat. Rupert and Andrea are lovely. The property was awesome so quiet and you can eat any fallen fruit. Magical place to relax and unwind after 4 weeks kiwifruit picking.

I was very happy with my stay here. Andrea was very welcoming and helpful. I stayed in a dorm room, but turned out I had it to myself, which was nice. The facilities seem to be purpose built for small share accommodation, with a large kitchen and dining room, and separate lounge space. Everything was spotlessly clean. It felt very tranquil - close enough to the highway to be convenient for those travelling by car, but far enough away to feel like you're staying on a farm away from the world. I would definitely recommend staying here. The eggs and passionfruit were a nice welcoming touch as well.

The setup was perfect especially for eating & our hosts even made us a pizza dough, exceptional.

I really enjoyed that this property was private and we had a lot of privacy with no distractions also that from every room we had a beautiful views. The beds were nice and comfortable with and rooms were very spacious. Nice and big.

Lovely quiet country environment and still close to everything.

We were very comfortable and enjoyed our use of the communal lounge area. We were lucky to be the only visitors, it might seem a bit communal if all 4 rooms are taken. Good to be able to walk around the garden and Avo orchard.

I really enjoyed my time at this tidy and cheerful accomodation. The owner operators were wonderfully knowledgeable of the community and local attractions.
