Staff were quite outstanding. Attentive and anticipated needs including carrying bags to and from car, guiding into garage, introduction to hotel. Yes, it is expensive but worth what it costs. It is particularly appealing to have a Michelin restaurant within the hotel (as well as a second casual place) with the expected levels of service, cuisine and ambience. So good we ate there both nights with excellent variety of options.
Access is atrocious! Obviously not the fault of the hotel but you do need nerves of steel (and preferably a compact car) to get into and out of the city. Rather helpfully they sent a video of the implausible route without which I would have seriously doubted if it really was a road or merely a pedestrian access! Overall worth the stress to be right inside this amazing town.
Beautiful hotel in a fantastic location. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was very good and nice choices -,however i much prefer a buffet for fruit, cheese and cold meats with a made to order egg/omelette course. Just personal preference
Nothing - no complaints at all
My stay at Monastero di Cortona was truly exceptional. The hotel is beautiful, peaceful and perfect for relaxation, and I genuinely wished I could have stayed longer. A very special thank you to Mr. Carmena, the Manager, Mr. Alessandro, and Eleonora at the Front Desk for their wonderful hospitality, professionalism and genuine care. The dining experience was unforgettable. Alessandro and the chef took me on a wonderful journey through the flavors of Tuscany, and I can still remember the taste of the incredible dishes. The spa was equally wonderful — beautiful, peaceful and an exceptional experience. Everything about my stay was memorable, and I will definitely return. Highly recommended!
Alles was prachtig en het uitzicht geweldig!
Helemaal niets
Erg mooi!
Luogo incantevole, personale attento, gentile e premuroso.
Nichts
L'atmosfera
Nulla
Posto incantevole, servizio eccellente, colazione super
The hotel carried an important sense of history, which made our stay truly special. The breakfast was very nice, and it was a treat to eat outside. For the most part, the staff was very helpful, especially in the breakfast room and the workers at the front desk.
The shower in the room was tiny and there could have been more soap provided.
ristorante ottimo akbergo molto bene stanza perfetta
Beautiful hotel - nicely decorated to provide a luxurious feeling with great charm. Very comfortable beds and rooms attended by a caring staff. It is also well situated - of course hard to find but once you do, easy to get into town center. Pool and grounds were lovely. They want you to eat in their restaurant. A few days prior to arrival, We asked them to make two restaurant reservations, they confirmed but when we arrived and checked - they changed one night to the hotel restaurant and told us the other night the restaurant was full - this was after they confirmed it a few days earlier. Hotel apologized and said all the restaurants were booked - we called directly and were able to make reservations directly ourselves with no problem - not what you would expect from a luxury hotel…. Besides that, we loved the hotel and would stay again in a second!
This is a stunning hotel in a most beautiful location. The welcome was warm and appropriately attentive. Room was well looked after morning and evening with nice touches throughout. The restaurants were great - both the Tuscan Traditional and the fine dining. Quality and service was really good along with good local wine selections. Breakfast is splendid (and filling!). The plunge pool is good. Not sufficient sized for a full hotel but we didn’t struggle to get a bed at any time of the day. Super place and suspect we will be back!
Dbałość o każdy szczegół l w sprzątaniu pokoju oraz częsta wymiana ręczników i kosmetyków
Wszystko było cudowne. Aczkolwiek metalowa barierka przed wjazdem do garażu odsunięta o 20 cm ułatwiłaby niejeden wjazd i wyjazd z garażu.
The quality and exceptional level of service, staff and fabulous building.
The price of the view is access to its elevated position.
Probably the most spectacular place I’ve ever stayed. The town is amazing. The views are amazing. And the staff and service was second to none Just an incredible experience. Very highly recommend.

Everything was fabulous
Easy location and easy to get to. Staff very good. Beautiful view from terrace area
Limited service both in hotel and at pool
wonderful, but the service seemed slower than last year
The staff is wonderful... we love seeing the same people working there again, but the service did seem a bit slower... I think because the property is becoming more crowded with larger groups.
My wife and I enjoy staying in 5* hotels and luxury rated villas and Monastero was by far the best we have experienced. Of course the monastery is beautiful, a lovely walk into the market square on old cobbled streets but the best experience was always returning to the hotel to relax in the garden and the friends we made with the team. The constant good humour and service made our stay truly memorable. Our highlights were the ambience, food and the amazing experience eating at the Gli Affreschi (thank you Alessandro & Orlando), every morning at breakfast with Ana, Lorenzo and Christiano, and the evening experience drinking best ever cocktails (thank you Claudio) overlooking the amazing Tuscan views from the top of the garden. Picture to prove it. Cant wait to visit again. The whole team were amazing especially housekeeping – the room was immaculate. Thank you all

Everything was fabulous
Pool area was small but beautiful. Indoor spa was lovely .
We stayed here for four nights, in the Junior Suite Bellevue. Other than a couple of long weekends in Florence, this was our first visit to Tuscany and we selected the hotel partly due to its location inside the Etruscan walls of Cortona - so we could explore the town - and partly as it is ideally-located to visit many of the iconic Tuscan and Umbrian towns, with Siena, Assisi, San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino each within an hour or so's drive. Before arriving we had no idea what to expect but the hotel's website and the reviews on Tripadvisor suggested it was somewhere pretty special. In the run-up to our arrival, I was in communication with the hotel about various things, including how to get to it in a car, since Cortona has a ZTL and inside the ancient walls the streets are narrow, even by narrow Italian standards. The front desk staff were really professional and helpful in their pre-stay emails, including sending detailed directions with a video of how to navigate from the Porta Colonia gate to the hotel. By the time we checked-in, we already felt like we were part of the family and welcome guests. From the moment I pressed the intercom to gain access to the garage upon our arrival outside to the moment we left, our stay was sensational. Monastero di Cortona is small by hotel standards - I think it's only 36 rooms - but you wouldn't know this from your guest experience: this is a full-service hotel that delivers the same level of guest proposition as a large chain hotel with 20-times the number of rooms. Except here the proposition is delivered on a much more individual and personal basis. As Alessandro (one of the F&B managers) said when I was talking with him 'we don't have that many guests, so we can try to make them all feel like they are part of our family. We like to take an interest, we want to be relatable.' The later was a very percipient observation and reflected how we found the staff throughout our stay: not just professional and attentive, but welcoming and interested in their guests. An example would be the two bartenders in the 'pool bar' (Claudio and his colleague, whose name I forget, apologies): I wandered in one afternoon to order a glass of wine and a bottle of the very find local IPA, to hear Oasis playing on the audio system. So I strike up a conversation about music and it turns out the bartender was very knowledgeable and very interested in music. This resulted in some really enjoyable conversations during our stay, where we would play different tracks on our portable speaker on the terrace outside our suite whenever the next round of drinks were brought up. Watching the breathtakingly-beautiful sunset listening to Shine On You Crazy Diamond is one of those 'I've seen things you people wouldn't believe' moments. I don't think I've ever found myself in a hotel bar at 11pm discussing Al Jourgensen, Rick Rubin and Johnny Cash but it was surreal, hilarious and added yet another little memory to our stay. Maybe that's it, maybe Monastero is brilliant because of lots of little interactions or moments that add something to your stay. Perhaps imperceptible when they happen but later you find yourself thinking about how much you enjoyed them. The screams of swifts that zoom around the sky above the hotel; the view out across the Chiana valley that is achingly beautiful; the pool right outside your suite's terrace; the feeling as you walk through the hotel entrance into the former monastery's refectory that is now the front lobby, airconditioned serenity and historical elegance combined; the little tower platters at breakfast; walking down the narrow street into the town centre feeling like you are a local. The suite we had - the Junior Suite Bellevue - was fabulous. Spacious, beautifully decorated and effectively airconditioned, although with its own terrace and the view out across the valley we tended to leave the patio doors open all the time. The suite was accessible up some steps and through its own little gate, the portico bedecked with jasmine that gave the terrace the most wonderful aroma. I think that the adjacent room was the larger Suite Bellevue, which shared the steps and had its own gate opposite. These two suites are at the far end of the outdoor terrace and have the most fantastic views. The bed was enormous and incredibly comfortable, with a mattress that was on the firm side of comfortable but which once you laid on it, provided the perfect amount of support. We both had restful sleep every night. There was plenty of lighting in the room, including some rather elegant recessed lighting behind the ceiling panels, that made the room feel very airy and bright. I think I gave up counting at 15 individual light bulbs and that was without the unknown number of ones hidden behind the ceiling panels. There were also adjustable spot reading lights on either side of the bed. The outdoor terrace has some tables and about a dozen sun loungers, most of which are lined up under huge shades that electronically extend and retract, so guests can control how much direct sunlight they want to catch. In the corner is the 'pool bar' (which is probably doing it a disservice to call it that) that opens from lunchtime to late evening, offering drinks and a small but more than adequate bar menu for snacks and light meals. There are two restaurants and I am embarrassed to say that we didn't eat in either, mainly because we were out exploring whenever possible and by the time you get back, the last thing you want to do it have another meal. However, both looked very enticing, with fine dining menus full of local ingredients. One of the restaurant spaces is also used for breakfast service and is delightful, being a courtyard of tables with parasols, overseen at one end by a large statue of a saint. Breakfast was served first as a little tower of culinary delights (top tier pastries, middle tier fruits, bottom tier meats & cheeses) to share, with rolls & preserves, then your own a la carte choices. As you would expect, the fresh orange juice was off-the-scale delicious. The hotel has a rather splendid looking spa that, if my memory of the introductory tour on the way to our room is correct, has taken a former Roman cistern under the hotel and created an indoor pool and spa that is part ancient monument, part Bond-villain lair. We fully intended to use it but ended up either being out & about or just enjoying the terrace and outdoor pool area. There is a charge to access the spa in timed slots but having seen its size, this is to ensure that every guest using it has the best experience and the facilities are never crowded. There were a few minor downsides: - Some of the tables on the terrace weren't cleared down at end of the evening. When we walked down the terrace on the way to breakfast in the morning, there were empty glasses and some plates from the evening before that hadn't been collected. On one occasion we called the number on the tray to say that we had finished with our plate from room service and despite being told someone would collect them, they were still outside on the ledge the next morning. - There was a lack of storage space in the suite. The wardrobe was massive and while it provided more than enough hanging space - including full height hanging, always appreciated by my partner so she can hang her maxi dresses - other than a single shelf at the top of the wardrobe, there was no other space in terms of shelves or drawers. There was room for a small chest of drawers in one corner (between the armchairs, where the floor lamp is) or even inside the wardrobe. It meant we kept little piles of shirts, shorts, underwear and socks (socks ordered into little piles, yes I really do need to get out more) inside our open suitcases. - There were no USB sockets with the power sockets. Most people now travel with numerous electronic devices and most devices come with a charging cable with a USB-A or C on one end, rather than a moulded plug that is country specific. Integrated plug and USB power sockets are increasingly common and are especially useful in hotel rooms for this reason - you can simply connect your electronic devices without the need for any adapter plug. There are also numerous charging stands available. We always travel with a 4-socket extension lead and loads of adapter plugs, just in case, but it would have been good to have seen integrated USB and plug sockets, even if just in the existing power sockets that are either side of the bed. These were minor issues and certainly didn't impact our enjoyment but feedback should always be comprehensive. We were genuinely sad to have to check-out. The Junior Suite Bellevue wasn't cheap but the cost was most definitely worth it. Most of the rooms are classic, deluxe or superior and I was surprised at how competitively priced these were, given that you can enjoy all the hotel's facilities, regardless of the grade of room you book. Thanks are due to Federico and Anna on the front desk, big-glasses lady from housekeeping and Justice on the concierge team. As we were preparing to check-out, I called down and asked if someone could collect our luggage and take it down to the front desk. Justice and a colleague appear and duly take our luggage. We go down and check-out, say our goodbyes and then walk down to the garage...where Justice is standing next to our car with the luggage, waiting to put it into the boot for us. What a top gentleman. You could stay here, never leave the hotel and have a fantastic time. The fact that the hotel is located inside the walls of Cortona and can act a base from which to immerse yourself in Tuscany and Umbria adds to its appeal. Overall, Monastero di Cortona is superb. The epitome of hospitality.
The views and restaurant options were amazing, pool was great
The walk to the property is steep but the view is worth it.
Where to begin...think about your expectations of this place then double it, even triple it. The entire process of booking the hotel, massages, dinner, everything is just absolutely amazing and with ease. The entire staff deserves five stars. I started messaging the team during their off season for our trip in June and had very professional, timely responses. Even though I spoke with multiple people they sent a summary of my request right before check in to make sure the whole process went without error. On our way to the hotel, we had some problems with our train services and the staff helped us figure out the best way to get to their hotel and even offered to send a driver to us when we were FORTY minutes away. Outstanding service all around. They honored our request for late checkout, gave us a room upgrade, and we cannot say enough about the food, wine, and drinks from check in to check out. Every person treated us like we were their only guests. The spa, the baths, and the room were clean, safe, beautiful, and we felt as if we were a King and a Queen. We joked that this is one of those places that we don't belong, but the funny thing is the staff made us feel welcomed every time we interacted with them. They set up a driver for us from train station and back. They offered us an espresso while waiting for our cab. Just little things like that added up to the best experience we have had at a hotel. I know the limit is five stars but this place deserves all the recognition possible.
This hotel deserves a 10/10! The hotel, the staff, the amenities and the whole feel leaves you with something to remember. The location is great, and bring your walking shoes. The hike up the hill is worth it. We stayed here as well as our 25 guests before our wedding. The staff took amazing care of each and every one of us. Everyone was so helpful and eager to ensure that nothing was stressful. They showed us what a 5 star hotel truly represents! We will be back! Thank you for everything!
It’s such a wonderful place to retreat to, you can enjoy a short bit steep walk to the piazza or stay and not even leave the hotel, the choice is yours….
Having to leave, four nights was definitely not enough!
THE STAFF THE ROOM THE HOTEL THE FOOD THE LOCATION
The TVs need sorting out as English speaking channels hardly work and only one English channel The outside areas sadly had groups all vaping or smoking whilst using their mobile phones on speakers at the dinner and breakfast tables The swimming pool was a delight but it needs staff to prevent people sitting in pool all afternoon loudly talking, whilst drinking with glasses in and around the actual pool space. Otherwise I would have rated this hotel 10/10.
Monastero di Cortona, what an amazing experience. The entire staff are astounding, some of the most impressive people we’ve ever experienced in a setting like this. Matteo and Fredericko went out of their way over and over to help two Americans (with a lot of questions) experiencing Italy for the first time. Also, there was Anna, a server in Resturant Osterio who made us feel like family each time we dined in the restaurant. We only had three days there, so we did not use utilize the spa or pool. The area around the pool is beautiful and surely would have been enjoyable. If you visit the Monastero be prepared to be pampered. Excellent job!
The hotel manager was very personable and welcoming. She always said hello to us when she saw us. Also, the front desk staff, bartenders, waiters, and housekeeping staff were amazing.
Et fantastisk hotel beliggende i en meget smuk by.
An absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. Monastero di Cortona Hotel & Spa is a beautiful property that perfectly blends history, luxury, and tranquility. What truly made my stay exceptional was the staff. Everyone was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and went above and beyond to make sure I had a wonderful experience. Their genuine hospitality made me feel right at home. This was a memorable stay, and I wouldn’t hesitate to return. If you’re visiting Cortona, this hotel is an absolute must-visit. Highly recommended!
The manager was very personable and knew my name and said hello everytime she saw me. The staff was excellent, from check in to breakfast, the bar area, spa area, and housekeeping. Our room was spotless everyday. They also arranged for transportation from and to the train station. We loved everything about this hotel!
There was nothing that we didn’t like.
Beautiful, well kept, clean and very professional and friendly staff
Air con not very powerful and a little noisy. Other than that….perfection
One of the most beautiful hotels and rooms we have experienced. The service was truly exceptional and exceeded expectations. We would especially like to extend our sincere gratitude to Matteo, who made our stay truly memorable. He went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable, well looked after, and happy throughout our stay.
A stunning hotel, in a beautiful location & with excellent staff. The room, food, drink & service were all outstanding & meant we had a lovely long weekend. The restaurant Gli Affreschi was amazing, with some lovely wines recommended by the sommelier
The location is spectacular. The atmosphere is so incredibly beautiful. The rooms were stunning. It’s an amazing amazing value. The cleanliness was five stars. The noise level was so quiet. The service was five stars. The amenities were five stars. We absolutely fell in love with monastery Di Cortona and we will be back. It was an experience unlike anything we’ve ever had. It was so beautiful.
Amazing service, food and drinks were stunning and hotel was in a perfect location

Stunning building, with very helpful staff in a beautiful part of the world. The food & drink were excellent and the whole hotel was very well presented.

A true luxury hotel, excellent staff and facilities. The spa is fabulous and the cocktail bar great. All first class
L'accoglienza
This is a true luxury hotel.especially the staff. From the front of house to the best bar/cocktail lounge especially Claudio.Stylish comfortable makes you feel good.best accommodation of 16 hotels in our 8 weeks in Europe.
It’s at the top of the town so a steep climb up to it from the town.
Schitterend gerenoveerd. Pure klasse. Uitstekend restaurant en super vriendelijk personeel. Een topadres!
Niets.
We absolutely love MONASTERO and will be back again. The service, food, spa and of course Cortona never let us down!! Each morning breakfast was special. Thanks again. We are successfully in the air flying back home. Sara and team. Thanks so much for making our changed plans work. Sara you filled me with confidence as we were in need of changed plans. We appreciate your professionalism. BTW Francesco did a great job driving us directly to airport in Rome. Please send me his contact info so I have for next time. See you all again soon ❤️
Facilities, decoration,very professional helpful staff
I found the breakfast rather sparse
Another fantastic stay at the Monastero di Cortona Hotel where Flavia and her team made every effort to make our stay a top experience.
The service restaurant breakfast and bar outstanding. Reception staff very helpfull
Great location, great service.
The parking with a big SUV is not a good choice, definitely recommend renting a small car.
The three nights we spent in Cortona were truly amazing. From the moment we arrived at this world-class hotel, we were treated with warmth, professionalism, and genuine care. The history of the property is beautifully preserved. As a former monastery, it retains incredible character, including the original cistern that has been thoughtfully transformed into a serene spa. It is a rare and memorable experience. The food and service were top notch throughout our stay. Every detail felt intentional and refined. We will absolutely return. Highly recommended.
Location
Rooms are pathetic, extremely cold, we were offered the last minute leftovers: an attic room with a tiny window in the ceiling - some weird stairs introducing the stairway to eventual freedom and a chair just below the window where you’re probably supposed to sit and breathe light in to try to overcome depression from a hundred year sentence burden…of course we did not accept this, but were offered an alternative on the ground floor, right next to the Osteria entrance, very noisy, window on the level of the street, people laughing and yelling until very late…kitchen’s like next door… Dinner we had in the windy courtyard of the Osteria, which was bearable but menu is poor, staff is undertrained, the “somelier” in the evening brings to you espresso and orange juice in the morning…they charge you 35 euro to enter the spa…nothing in common with a five star hotel experience. Definitely.
Beautiful building, fantastic staff, excellent food and wine, great location and facilities, we will be returning!
We had a fabulous three nights here which honestly was not long enough because we did not have a chance to enjoy the pool and spa facilities. This hotel is first class - the well appointed room was spacious and had a magnificent view of the Tuscan hillside; the manager of the hotel personally welcomed us and she engaged with us several times during our stay; the staff was so attentive and professional and the daily breakfast was delicious and served in a lovely restaurant. The Monastero di Cortona was top of the list for our favorite hotel during our travels through Italy.
Monastero di Cortona was a lovely property and we very much enjoyed our stay. The hotel staff was exceptionally service-oriented and went above and beyond to help us with pressing services we needed for our son’s wedding, which we greatly appreciated during a busy and meaningful trip. The breakfast and lunch offerings were both very good, and our room was beautifully appointed overall. The beds themselves were comfortable, though the hotel could significantly improve the pillows, which were so flat they were practically nonexistent. We also found the rooms quite cold during our stay and had to request both a heater and additional blankets. It took until our final night for everything to be fully resolved, but the staff was responsive and ultimately addressed the issue. There were a couple of additional minor inconveniences during our stay. We could hear guests in the room above us late at night and again very early in the morning on the day of our departure, which unfortunately woke us before 6am. Additionally, the hotel experienced a temporary loss of both cell and WiFi service on our last day, which made coordinating with our car service a bit challenging, though it ultimately was not a major issue. One important note for travelers: the walk between town and the hotel involves very steep hills and would likely be quite difficult for anyone with mobility limitations. We joked that it became our daily glute and quad workout while in Cortona. Overall, we found Monastero di Cortona to be a beautiful, welcoming property with excellent hospitality and would happily recommend it to travelers looking for a charming stay in Tuscany.
This is a very well run hotel. The staff are unfailingly courteous, the rooms are very spacious, spotlessly clean and very comfortable, and full of luxurious accessories. The restaurant is superb, compliments to the chef. It was too early in the season to enjoy the grounds and the pool, which look lovely in photographs, but the setting at the top of Cortona is very quiet with fine views. A little tricky getting there by car, as many have commented, but in every other respect we can recommend this fine hotel wholeheartedly.
Great location! Beautiful place.
It’s a beautifully restored monastery.
It’s difficult to drive to and from the hotel garage with a large car.
Beautiful place, taken out of history. Great hospitality. All employees were warm and polite
Reaching the hotel by car can be a challenge. But they have good instructions

The service was excellent. The amenities were everything we wanted.
Not being able to drive our large van to the property
Personale gentilissimo, struttura molto bella e ben curata.
Excellent hotel in every aspect - location, service, staff, breakfast, room cleanliness. This is out new favourite hotel in Tuscany!
Tutto! Struttura storia fantastica Personale meraviglioso e sempre disponibile Ristoranti e bar di altissimo livello Posizione meravigliosa Pulizia ottima
Ambiente curato, gentilezza personale location top. Servizi all'altezza.

We stayed at the Monastero for my 50th birthday and I had been looking forward to this night for almost a year. The property is beautiful and the spa experience was phenomenal. We went to the spa immediately upon arrival and spent 2 hours swimming in the old roman cistern and also getting treatments. It was such a unique and special experience! However as our evening progressed we did have some issues. The night we stayed there was a storm and the hallways of the hotel lost power. We had to use the flashlights on our phones to get around as it was completely pitch black, plus the wind and rain was coming through through the window all night long. I do understand this is an extremely old property with original features and windows, but we were only staying for one night and it ended up being a very uncomfortable night and there was no recognition of how much the weather and power issues impacted our stay and ability to enjoy the property. I would have expected a property of this caliber would have at least verbally recognized the inconvenience it caused, especially for what was such a big personal occasion. We didn't eat at the restaurant for dinner due to the blackout and instead when down the hill for dinner, but breakfast was very nice in the morning. The spa experience was definitely the highlight of our stay!
Spa eccezionale, posizione, ristoranti, colazione top. Piscina esterna fantastica
