Clean room and staff was excellent

This ryokan was the highlight of our trip to Japan. The property is serene, the onsen is so relaxing, and the service was incredible. The food was delicious and abundant as well. It was truly a magical evening. Special thanks to Muna, our attendant during our stay - she was wonderful!

Das Hotel bietet jedem Japan-Enthusiasten eine unvergessliche Erfahrung. Mir wurde hier der beste Service zu teil, den ich jemals in einem Hotel erfahren habe. Wer es sich aktiv leisten möchte, sollte unbedingt ein Zimmer mit privatem Onsen und die Halbpension bzgl. des Abendessens buchen - beides ein unvergesslicher Genuss für Körper und Gaumen. Wir sind bei Anreise zur nächstgelegenen Bushaltestelle gefahren und von dieser aus gelaufen. Wer schlecht zu Fuß ist, kann den kostenfreien Shuttle Service des Hotels von umliegenden Bus- und Bahnstationen in Anspruch nehmen. Insgesamt eine unvergessliche Erfahrung auf unserer Japanreise.

We had a wonderful stay for our honeymoon. The breakfast and dinner every day were fantastic, but the person waiting on us made our experience so much better. She was thoughtful, communicative, and very nice. The in room onsen was magnificent, the beds were the most comfortable we had stayed in all trip, and the spa treatment we received was excellent. Would highly recommend.

We stopped at Madoka No Modi Ryoken for one nights during our stay in Japan and loved it! The staff were very friendly and attentive and the traditional Japanese breakfast/dinner was amazing. The room and private onsen was relaxing and peaceful and we will definitely be back!

The ultimate form of r e l a x a t i o n Taking local trains to Hakone from Tokyo was relatively easy and well worth the trip for this incredible ryokan. The staff was unbelievable, the open air baths were delightful and peaceful, the kaiseki dinner and breakfast were both exquisite. I hope I get to come back some day!

One of the most fabulous hotels I've ever stayed at. The service was impeccable, and the venue and staff really immersed you in Japanese culture. We were lucky enough to have dinner and breakfast in our room, which I highly recommend. We left the place feeling extraordinarily relaxed and energized and our only wishes that we would've stayed there longer.

Nested in a semi-secluded hillside of Hakone, our spacious accommodation offered exceptional in-room onsen experience in a relaxing setting. The staffs were professional, courteous and friendly. Free pick-up and drop-offs at nearby attractions and Gora Station were wonderful to have since roads were pretty steep. Dinners and breakfasts were included and they were beautifully put together. Highly recommended.

Amazing visit to this ryokan! Would highly recommend. English friendly staff they were so attentive and welcoming. The dinner and breakfast were superb and we were stuffed by each meal. The in-room bath as well as the public baths are very nice. They provided pick up transportation from the local train station. I wouldn't hesitate to book this place.

We had an amazing stay. The staff was so accommodating and polite. They also too my fiancé's allergies very seriously. I highly recommend.

Highly recommend this ryokan. The service was out of this world and the property was so beautiful. We stayed in the Sumire room and it was very spacious with its own onsen on the patio. Such a relaxing stay, can’t wait to come back!

Amazing service and amenities!

Beautiful property, extremely friendly and caring staff. I accidentally left behind an item and they were very responsive and helped me figure out a solution to get the item back. The meal was beautiful and interesting experience! Even though I am not an adventurous eater, I could tell the thought and detail that went into it. The staff did a great job of explaining the dishes. Definitely a great experience to try when visiting Japan.

My husband and I stayed here and it was very relaxing. The staff is very kind and helpful. The staff mostly speaks English too. Since the facilities were so out of the way, we found it convenient to call their shuttle bus when we needed to get back to the hotel. The kaiseki meals provided were tasty and impressive. It was very helpful for the dinner that they provided a menu of each course because I have some food allergies. We didn’t use the other spas provided because the private bath was enough for us. The bed was so comfortable! The bar seats only a few people and got filled up quickly after dinner. Overall we loved it and would stay again.

The entire staff were super friendly, especially Yamamoto. They all ensured that our stay went without a hiccup. The space was very clean, though you can tell the minerals in the water are starting to erode some of the amenities (e.g. shower, wood on the onsen etc.) The dining experience was amazing and the food was delectable. It really felt like fine dining in a traditional setting.

Very nice service, good food in classic Japanese style, staff are very nice and accommodating. The view from our room wasn’t the best, especially the private onsen was a bit lacklustre and the place is hard to get to, but that might just come with the territory in Hakone. The public onsen had a spectacular view, it was almost magical at night.

Absolutely perfect in every way. The food was exquisite and the staff were so kind. Highly recommended! I have never spent anywhere near this amount on a hotel before, but given everything that’s included, it felt completely worth it. We stayed two nights in room 215 (Akebonosou) and it was perfect. The meals were completely different each day, and the private onsen with forest view was delightful. We could see a bit of the mountains from our balcony so we didn’t even miss out on a mountain view! The shuttle took us to and from Gora station whenever we needed (it’s actually walking distance, but uphill so a bit of a hike) and from there we could get to all the Hakone sights by foot or public transit. But the ryokan is the best sight of all and we spent as much time there as we could.

This was our first and only Ryokan and so I feel my review is limited based on this singular experience but with that being said. Unlike other hotels that cost the same you’re not just paying for the location or the luxury of the room you’re paying for an entire experience, and this place delivers on that. The food is very good although I wish they offered better desserts than just a small fruit bowl. We loved how quiet and serene the entire grounds are, it was indicated that there were no rooms available and so I’m assuming the property was full though we only saw a couple of other guests, but it was always extremely quiet and peaceful and very relaxing. We booked the room we did specifically for the private onsen and it was great for two people.

The staff were angelic, dinner and breakfast were amazing, the bath was heavenly, and the beds were so comfortable. Taking a bath on the balcony while seeing snow for the first time in 16 years was magical. Will most definitely be returning for a special occasion in the future.

Impeccable service from the moment we were picked up from Gora Station and till the moment we left the hotel. This Ryokan has all the necessary amenities. Quality and presentation of the food is top notch as you will anticipated from a high end facility. Finally the entire staff went out of their way to make sure nothing is compromised and thumbs up to them. Will definitely return again

This ryokan was absolutely amazing! The service was unparalleled. Rooms were a good mix of traditional Japanese with luxury amenities. The private onsen was sooooo nice to have. The meals provided were fantastic. While it is a bit pricey, the total experience is worth it. Once in a lifetime!

It may seem expensive, but it’s totally worth it. You will be treated like royalty in an ancient Japanese castle. The Japanese breakfasts and dinner are delicious and each dish is a work of art. Thank you Asako for taking such good care of us. You and the rest of staff are wonderful.

Let's get the price out of the way. It's not overpriced for the amenities that are included! Both breakfast and dinner are included in the price for two. Ten courses breakfast and twelve courses Kaiseki dinner in a private dining room could easily cost at least $200 USD for two people; a private dining room in Japan costs 4000 yens at some restaurants. While the food is not michelin starred like Jiro, Tempura Kondo, Yamadaya, if Ushirgoro, the food is still good. A dinner for two at any of the named restaurants above would cost as much as a one night here. Looking back, we should have stayed here longer here in Hakone and skipped a couple of these Michelin rated restaurants. You get your own private onsen with a beautiful mountain view along with a fridge that is stocked and replenished daily with *free* drinks. What more can you ask for?? Free shuttles! There is a complimentary shuttle service from the train station and bus stops! Service is amazing from beginning to end! The room is spotless and the public onsen has a beautiful view. Be careful, male and female public onsen changes throughout the day. I almost walked into the female one because it was designated for male instead earlier that morning. Now let's talk about room size. This is a HUGE room in terms of Japanese standards. We paid $300 USD a night for a room HALF this size the last time we here in Hakone! Besides the roominess, we also loved the location! Because of its more secluded locatjon, you can enjoy

An outstanding ryokan. Loved it!

I've had the opportunity to stay in many luxury ryokan. Madoka no Mori's dinner is exceptional, as is the quality of water both in the private onsen and in the public ones. The peace of the area is incredibly therapeutic and the proximity to Tokyo and ease of travel make it an excellent overnight excursion. Staff are incredibly gracious and responsive to requests. I loved my time here, and will most certainly try to come again on my next holiday.

Their service was great. There are around 20 rooms in the hotel so you seldom can see other guests. You can choose to enjoy onsen in your room or in the public area. We did onsen located in public area every morning and had never met other guests. You would be put in a private room to have your meals. The covered breakfast and dinner are even better than some from Michelin 1-2 star restaurants. The hotel picked us up at the Gora station and also drove us directly to the open-air museums/other sites nearby next day. In addition, when we returned from sightseeing, we were surprised to find out the warm water was cooked for us and we were able to drink tea immediately. Highly recommended!

Among the best onsen ryokans I’ve ever stayed. Room was spacious and clean, equipped with high quality amenities. Meals were great with decent portion and high quality ingredient. The hot spring / public bath place is relatively plain but I’m sure it would be a lot better in Spring / Fall with more colors. Most importantly the staff are very attentive to details with passion to serve! Definitely worth the relatively high price in the Gora area.

Best hotel stay of my life. My wife and I included this stay during our trip to Tokyo—decided a one day detour in the middle for a little relaxation would be great. Best decision we made the whole trip! The service was spectacular, the property, Onsen, and amenities were incredible, and the food was unexpectedly impressive. We are very into food and read a few reviews that it was not anything to write home about: how wrong they were. Expertly cooked and ornately presented. Breakfast and lunch were some of the best meals of our trip. This was truly a stay we will remember for a lifetime.

This hotel was one of the best experiences of my life. The moment we entered the hotel and left our shoes, we felt very pampered and welcome. Everything was amazing - the rooms all made of wood, but equipped with the most modern devices and technology, amazing cosmetic products in the room, private onsen in the room (big enough to fit two people) and absolutely fabulous public onsen - it's not mixed, so women and men go separately, but it was a unique experience to sit alone in the outdoor onsen (the hotel doesn't have many rooms, so you could be lucky and don't have other visitors of the onsen at the same time you're visiting it). 12-course dinner was beyond expectations: we had wagyu beef, lobster and sea urchins and the breakfast was great as well (a bit unusual for the western taste though). I would give this hotel 10 out of 5 if I could.
