Our host helped to guide us and our route and our hiking in both national parks and gave us some amazing tips and insights. Lovely eclectic Edwardian property with interesting artwork and sculpture. Wish we had stayed longer
Could not ask for better, charming atmosphere, hospitable host.
A fabulous B&B that is made so friendly and enjoyable by the host Mark. Front green room with stunning views and a verandah was great. The breakfasts were the highlight as it was in the formal lounge room and cooked to perfection by Mark. It was a very welcoming stay thank you Mark.
Shady Rest is filled with character and warmth, including lots of eclectic art, furniture and decor. Mark is a wonderful host who is passionate about running his B&B, making guests feel totally at home, offering terrific suggestions on places to see, and making a lovely breakfast. The little town is under a 1/2 mile walk so it’s very convenient to walk to dinner if you want to keep it simple. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
Fantastic B n B, giving you the run of the house and down to the creek to feed the eels! Really comfy bed and excellent shower too. Topped off with an eggsellent breakfast.
Jan, the operator, was exceptionally friendly and helpful. The breakfast was top notch.
Dave was an exceptional host and didn't mind the (very) late check-in at all. He even let us change rooms free of charge after we accidentally booked a single room instead of a double. The breakfast was amazing and we loved his chef outfit so much. Everything was literally a 10/10.
Beautiful house in a great location. Mark is a fabulous host, incredibly helpful, giving us some great tips on places to visit. He also cooks a perfect poached egg!
Lovely welcome from the owner Mark. Made us more than welcome in a property full of character
Great service, location, comfortable rooms very hungry eels in the creek behind house.
Absolutely beautiful B&B. Marc was the best host we had in our 3 weeks in New Zealand, he was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Our room was perfect and breakfast was delicious every morning.
Interesting history surrounding the property, nice big room and clean bathroom
A unique old fashioned property in need of some loving care No TV in rooms Good continental breakfast
Awesome owners, great amenities and location
What an amazing and unique home. Enjoyed our stay, Jan was a fantastic hostess, very happy to share her knowledge of the area and cooks great scrambled eggs on toast.
Totally delightful! Lovely staff, great breakfast, modern amenities in an eclectic 117 year old house. Fascinating decor of antique and funk. You'll talk about it for days after. Good value
Jan was fantastic with her welcome and cooked us a great breakfast the next morning. THANKS Jan. We would certainly love to stay again.
The property is unique. Classic villa with plenty of fascinating objects to admire. We loved our room with its quality carpet, beautiful lamps and most importantly a comfortable bed. Most importantly the warm welcome by the owner plus the timely offer of ' a cuppa' on arrival.
Quirky, homely and appealing! Loved it!
Wonderful stay! friendly, informational. Marvellous art all over the place. V Highly recommend, and looking forward to going back for a stay
Mark our host made us not only feel entirely welcome but as part of an extended Family. I have travelled extensively in my career but seldom ever felt as Welcome and happy in a small well run establishment. Thanks Mark !!!
An very interesting place to stay. Full of characters but can see the house has been through lots. Friendly staff :)
Such a cool place to stay, lovely people, old worldly charm, log fire, comfy bed and good breakfast. Just one small thing- pillows need replacing they have seen better days and weren’t very comfortable. Yes I would definitely stay again. Thanks
Stayed one night but would have liked to stay longer. Mark was fab, gave us ideas of where to visit and made us a great breakfast If you like bland hotels this might not be your cup of tea but if you like interesting and welcoming book here
Walking distance to shops and restaurants. Spacious facilities Friendly owner
The Shady Rest is a period B&B, which is full of character and has a friendly welcoming host. There comes a point where period and quality cross over, I felt that Shady Rest is reaching that point. I found the bed in my room very soft and uncomfortable, which affected my nights sleep and stay. So for character 10/10, but for comfort, 4/10.
I enjoyed a relaxing stay at the Shady Rest. Mark, the owner is very welcoming and friendly. He is helpful in providing a good deal of activities that can be found around the Takaka and Golden Bay areas. He provided me with a map of the Golden Bay area, and describe the many points of interest/activities to explore. The 100+ year old home has been nicely restored, and has modern comforts. The are numerous types of artwork throughout the property, and a wonderful common area in the back which has a bbq, plenty of shade, and a gorgeous wood table for guests to enjoy. The property is located on the main street through Takaka, and the main business area with restaurants, shops, and a Fresh Choice market is an easy 8-15 min. walk. The bed was comfortable, and the room was quiet at night. There are several nice areas of the home to relax, including an elevated front porch/balcony for reading or taking in the fine Tasman weather. The breakfast was nicely presented, and filling. A great fruit salad, cereal, eggs cooked to order with toast, and tea, coffee, and orange juice were offered. This is all served around a beautiful large wooden table in the dining room of the home, or outside in the common area if you prefer. I would not hesitate recommending a stay at this wonderful B&B.
Beautifully restored and charmingly decorated space, large, gorgeous rooms, excellent service and hospitality and delicious breakfasts. The host gave us great tips and advice for exploring the area and enabled the perfect experience in Takaka. Highly recommend!
Host was very friendly & shared insight to attractions. Bed & room was great.
Our stay at the Shady Rest was superb. A beautiful home with a wonderful host.
Nice old building, welcome was great, had tea served and Mark talked us through the area. Room was nice and bathroom was clean, but there were a lot of dead flies on the carpets. It seemed to be run as a B&B in the main house and then a hostel or something in an outhouse in the back and they cleaned the main house (there was a rota hanging on the fridge for chores). The main reason I wasn’t that impressed was because I hung two dresses out on a hanger (one worn and one brand new) and the brand new one mysteriously went missing when we were out one day...
We stayed one night and it was very good. We had a wonderful room and all the details in and round the house were amazing.
Mark was extremely welcoming and helpful and breakfast was delicious. The place has wonderful charm and history. Recommended!
Mark was an excellent host and gave us helpful sightseeing advice and map. Best night’s sleep on our trip
The owner wasnt there when we arrived. The property is run down and smells old. No heating in the bathroom. breakfast was simple with no attention by a staff member. located right by the main road - noisey.
Fantastic rooms, wonderful hosts. Nothing was too much for them
Great place to stay. We had a very spacious room and our host was extremely helpful. Lovely breakfast.
Not fancy but comfortable and Mark is very welcoming. Great breakfast!
Very pleasant stay, hospitable host, great accommodation !
Fabulous quirky place with exceptional friendly service from our host Mark and the staff! Would highly recommend staying there
Great hospitality, terrific breakfast. Owner and staff could not have been more accommodating and friendly.
Host Mark was extremely helpful, he told me what to do & see & had several good tips. As a single guest I was upgraded to a larger room. The building itself & all rooms were good & packed with character.. The breakfast was very good with lots of choices. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again. Thanks Mark !
Great location close to shops and restaurants. Short drive to beautiful beaches. Owner very friendly and helpful. Excellent breakfast. Highly recommend.
This is the place to stay. Mark is a wonderful host, very knowledgeable about the area. The bed and breakfast is wonderfully renovated. Comfortable and a real delight
This was a very enjoyable BnB, the host was wonderful and the food simple but tasty (fruit plate, yoghurt, toast, eggs, muesli/cereal, juice, coffee, tea). The room was very comfortable!
Great location, owner was very friendly and helpful.
A really beautiful place to stay the accommodation was very comfortable , the owner is extremely helpful and a great host. Highly recommend
The house is beautifully restored and the room and bathroom was very well appointed. Breakfast in the morning was also amazing! Great home base for visiting Abel Tasman!
