Reviewed Aug 10, 2026A delightful hotel right near the water in Kaikoura. Waking up to the sunrise and hearing the waves crashing outside was a real highlight. Everything was very clean, tidy and comfortable. Bed was excellent, bathroom had everything you could possibly need, and every detail was considered. As a bonus, it has both a split AC for winter (and summer) and a separate wall and bathroom heater. A small kitchenette had everything needed for cooking. No notes!

Huge room, very comfortable, and right across from the beach. The staff were lovely and accommodating. If you’re traveling with a dog, this is hard to beat.

Possibly furniture could have been rearranged so that couch was facing TV instead of only one easy chair facing TV. This was a very minor thing compared to the whole experience, and we very much enjoyed our stay.

Amazing view of the mountains and the sea straight across the road. Hosts were so friendly and had great local knowledge. Would happily stay there again and again.

Reviewed Apr 3, 2026This is a lovely motel providing everything you would want or expect. We were warmly greeted by Christina who could not have done more to be welcoming. The room was light and airy, of a good size that was improved by having a very high ceiling. It was both very well presented and maintained. Large comfortable bed, desk, table, small sofa and plenty of storage space. The kitchen area had a microwave, two ring hob and fridge. It was supplied with all the usual cooking implements and cutlery. Bathroom was of a good size though the shower was a corner unit and a little cramped for me, personally. Lots of hot water and a good pressure. Access from the room on to a small outside seating area looking into the beach and ocean. The motel is located on a main road but as it is a dead-end there is usually not much traffic and the noise level is very low. At night we enjoyed listening to the sound of the waves breaking on to the shore. Sitting outside you do look across the road to the beach but this was not as distracting as it sounds. We enjoyed sitting outside with a drink, admiring the view. I have no problem recommending The Anchor Inn as I would happily stay there again.
