The property location was excellent. There was a nice touch of porto and pástel de natas on arrival. That was all that we liked. The rest was a nightmare.

We checked into Maria da Sé Historic House on September 7, 2026. The following morning, after showering, I dried my face with a towel provided in the room — and instantly recoiled from a foul stench. When I examined the towel, I was mortified to find a stain exactly where it had touched my face. I immediately showered again, scrubbing my skin thoroughly with soap, and brought the towel to the staff, requesting to speak with the manager. The manager, Maria, was not present, but the staff described the incident to her while I stood there. I then sent her a detailed message documenting what had occurred and requesting a refund for the night of September 8, as we no longer felt comfortable staying at the property. Despite having been informed directly by her own staff, her response was, frankly, astounding: "Good morning, I apologize for what happened. The towel you put there doesn't belong to my accommodation: it was a mistake by the laundry service, and the maid didn't even notice. But I assure you it was clean, as was everything else in the house." Let that sink in: the soiled towel in question was the very one I had handed to her staff after it touched my face, and they had informed her of the situation. Yet Maria claimed it wasn't hers, blamed the laundry service, and still insisted it "was clean." When I reiterated my refund request, she stated, "I can see no reason for this course of action," adding that any refund — "which seems unlikely" — would have to be arranged through Booking.com. After I provided Booking.com with a full account of the incident, including a photograph of the towel, we were credited only €11.54 of the €120.51 we had paid for the night we did not stay. Any establishment with basic integrity would have refunded the night in question without hesitation — if not the entire stay — after a guest was potentially exposed to a biohazard on the premises.

Clean rooms and excellent location. Maria went out of her way to help us navigate Porto.

Molto carina la stanza... la posizione era ottima, in pieno centro. Al nostro arrivo abbiamo trovato ed apprezzato molto i loro dolci tipici e il vino porto.

Stanze per nulla insonorizzate, già di primo mattino si sentiva qualsiasi rumore, ci hanno spesso svegliati. Cucina al piano terra che emanava gli odori in stanza.

Fabulous property tastefully decorated with many features and clean. Comfortable bed and ideal location. Lovely touch of the welcome gifts.

La stanza era molto piccola, ma la cosa grave era la presenza di macchie di muffa ed umidità su tutto il soffitto che rendevano l’aria irrespirabile. Il bagno molto piccolo, tavoletta del WC rotta e presenza di doccia con la tenda (nel 2026 inaccettabile).

The welcome tart and wine was appreciated. Location was excellent (for the Camino). Host was great and bed was very comfortable.

Die Lage ist absolut top! Von hier aus kann man die Stadt erobern! Der Check In verläuft reibungslos. Der Kontakt mit dem Management funktioniert ausgezeichnet! Dieser Ort ist Easy Going und perfekt, wenn man es einfach und authentisch mag!

Wir waren 6 Tage und Nächte zu Gast. In diesem Zeitraum hätten wir uns gewünscht, dass die Handtücher und die Badematte gewechselt worden wären. Wenn nicht jeden Tag, dann zumindest jeden zweiten Tag. Die Dusche ist klein, und jeder Duschgang verursacht eine kleine Überschwemmung im Badezimmer. Da wäre das Wechseln der Badematte eine gute Sache, denn diese war bereits nach dem ersten Tag komplett nass, wie auch der Badezimmerboden.

It is important to mention somewhere (I have not seen this info before booking anywhere) that this property does not have car access. I had heavy luggage and it was a nightmare dragging everything around just to reach a car pick up point. Also, while it’s clean and beds are comfortable, one can make out that room facilities are very heavily used without proper maintenance. I had a room on a 3rd floor with spiral narrow staircase as access - I was able to carry my luggage up and down but not everyone might be and there was no one at the hotel throughout the weekend. Overall, the property is giving more of a hostel vibe (with separate rooms with AC and en-suite bathrooms of course, not taking it away) than a cozy, well maintained hotel.

Świetna lokalizacja blisko katedry i starówki. Blisko stacji metra São Bento. Miłe portugalskie smakołyki czekały na nas w pokoju na powitanie: kieliszek porto i pasteis de nata. Dobry kontakt mailowy i telefoniczny z gospodarzami.

Słabe oznaczenie hotelu na zewnątrz - tylko tabliczka w drzwiach.

Es war sehr schön im Hotel. Sehr gute Lage, Parkmöglichkeiten aber nicht vorhanden. Sehr schön sanierter Altbau mit Gefühl für Design.

Unser Zimmer war sehr klein, was aber auch dem historischen Bau geschuldet ist. Wer es nachts ruhig haben möchte, sollte eine andere Lage suchen. Es ist bis spät in die Nacht sehr laut an der Straße.

The location is perfect, short walking distance to the river and restaurants. The hotel is located on a side street and is quieter than the main street though only steps from it. We had a wonderful stay and will be back when we're in Porto again.

Très moyen. Viennoiseries décongelées. Prix exagéré pour la prestation. Salade de fruits inexistante. Pas de possibilité d'avoir le petit déjeuner avant 8 heures et donc payé pour rien si vous avez une excursion à 7h30.

Le manque de convivialité pour un "Guest House". La petitesse des chambres et une salle de bains avec un lavabo trop petit pour des personnes âgées sans oublier les escaliers à pic pour monter aux étages.

I arrived late and the instructions were helpful and they were easy to communicate with. The pasteis de nata were a wonderful treat after a long travel day.

We arrived late from the airport to discover a couple of pastel de nata and two glasses of port waiting for us in our room. It was a very nice touch and a treat after 20 hours of traveling. The location was great for us. The room was very compact but comfortable.

It was historical.

Extremely difficult to access room due to very steep stairs. The check-in process was extremely vague. I am a woman and I was traveling by myself and my nephew in another room at the same hotel and the owner accused me of having additional guests.

Nice clean room , centrally located. Good breakfast and great host in Maria.

Por poner un pero, al día siguiente de llegar nos quitaron la cortina de la ducha y no sabemos el porqué (ya que tampoco hemos conocido a la gente que gestiona los apartamentos). Me ha parecido súper raro.

Loved the location and the historic building itself. We were given the warmest welcome. All communication before and during arrival was good, Maria provided information about getting to the accommodation from the airport, railway station. There were suggestions of places to eat and visit in the reception/ breakfast area. The room was comfortable, with tea/coffee making facilities and a small ‘kitchenette’ area which although we didn’t use, was nice to have. The bathroom was compact but perfectly adequate. We enjoyed the balcony!There are quite a few stairs to the to floor, and no lift - which is made clear when booking, but worth mentioning here. Not a problem for us, but might be for others. The breakfast was good, freshly made to order each morning, served by very friendly helpful ladies. We were able to leave our luggage after checkout, as we had an evening flight, allowing is to make the most of our final day. All in all, a great place to stay whilst visiting Porto! Many thanks to Maria and her team 😊

Nous étions dans le studio avec un petit balcon avec vue panoramique sur la vielle ville et le Douro. Il a fait beau nous avons adoré ! Le studio est au dernier étage à l’arrière du bâtiment ! Aucun bruit et literie parfaite !

Een fijn glaasje Porto en een pastel de nata bij aankomst, heel fijn! De locatie was ook top!

Het bed was wel heel smal, de waterdruk was wel heel hoog en het water dat eruit kwam was bijna kokend, een beetje gevaarlijk! De wc-bril hing ook los. Ik denk dat we pech hadden met de kamer aan de straatkant op het eerste verdiep, waardoor we best veel straatlawaai hadden en andere gasten hoorden binnen en buiten gaan.

We weren’t left with enough towels the first night. Slow response time sometimes from Manager through messaging. Staff was super sweet, we could only communicate through Google Translate. Super small bathroom sink. I don’t think the dehumidifier worked, or I couldn’t get it to.
