The location, atmosphere and staff were all A+
Loved the location
What is not to like! The location, the views, the building itself, all amazing!

we were given a lovely, two bed room with a beautiful city view
perhaps if there were more ice machines
The hotel is beautiful, very comfortable and in a perfect location
Beautiful location, comfortable rooms. Work out Center/gym very nice.
Great location, views, staff, rooms, restaurant and bar.

Pokoje stare i brudne. Obsługa niemiła i problematyczna.
Beautiful, however room had a draft from windows and was somewhat noisy.

Beautiful room, well located! 20 mns walk from china town. Special place for a few nights stay :) greatly recommended if you want to have a unique experience
Incredible location and iconic building
A little bit in need of a refresh, the hotel is quite dated but extremely clean and well kept. Probably explains the good value for money
Good location on Nob Hill across from Fairmont
Very poorly maintained Not even water in the rooms Noisy room and small No room service late and no coffee
732 was fantastic

Folle!!

so sad the place is a shadow of once was.
The location and history, even like the fact that it doesn’t feel modern. The breakfast buffet was excellent.
The outside corner room windows were very dirty, which distorted and obscured the views, which was disappointing.
Everything
excellent housekeeping services. wonderful bar on top floor
your restaurant dinner menu could have been better
A grand old hotel that is more old now than grand. When I first visited 50 years ago it was one of the best. Of course, the Top of The Mark has great views and if you catch the right bartender you will have a great time. But the rooms seem tired with an odd mix of Goodwill furniture arrayed without any elegance. WiFi is horribly weak with less than 1 mbps up and down. No lunch room service. And the main lobby does not inspire one to hang out. The competition a few blocks away are at another level. The one reason to stay here is the location (and it IS THE location) and to save a few bucks while you visit the better food options nearby. Sorry to have to report this sad decline.
Ric, the concierge
It needs a bit renovation
Everything was clean and nice, the bed was good.
Coffee maker in the room would have been nice.
The people who served us in the restaurants, and at the front desk, including all the bellboys and concierge were first class quality! They all made us feel like family and made our visit very warm and special.
No Coffee self service in room. It was nice to have free coffee in lobby, but someone had to go down and get it ( in robe) hahaha!
Rooms were great, ideal location
Staff got confused by people assigned to each room, keys commonly stopped working, rude comment made to one of our guests regarding staying there
Very elegant the room big enough… the buffet is excellent
No pool or hot tub
The hotel rooms were very spacious and comfortable. The staff were also very helpful.
The service at the rooftop bar was slow.
Buffet breakfast was great. Food at Top of the Mark was good. Service was fair
Better functioning TV and toilet
The high floor views with seeing the city was excellent, same with the views at night. Yet it wasn't ever overwhelming. It's absolutely worth staying a couple of nights during business or vacation.
Great location. Hotel is functional - with some work going on to upgrade the property. We ate at the rooftop restaurant - great views but the service was sub-standard. Gym is reasonable - nothing great. Overall a good stay is SF.
Wonderful location, terrific views and easy access. Great restaurant.
Amenities were a bit dated.
great location and old time feel which I enjoy
The reality is that it is an older property so room and bath a little tight, electric support for phone/tablet chargers not installed...
Great staff. Good breakfast.
Bathrooms. Too small.
The room was very nice albeit a little small. It had a very nice view. Bathroom was also nice but could be updated some with a fan and a little larger. Loved the Top of the Mark. Lots of fun and beautiful.
There could have been a small basket of welcoming gift. The bathroom could use a fan. Everything was a little small, the bath and elevators, but very quaint. Also, the valet is a little extra expensive.
Older but well maintained, also great location. Fantastic top floor bar
The rooms did not have coffee or water and the bed was too soft.
It’s historic, “old money” vibes and exceptional location.
Parking costs might be the only draw back. $94 for overnight is a lot, but also everything is expensive in San Francisco
Fast check in and we were able to check in early which was great after a long journey. Room was a decent size and the general feel of the hotel was lovely.
We had booked a room with 2 queen beds but our situation changed and I had asked for a room with one bed instead but on arrival they said we were going to have to pay more so we stuck with what we had. The only water fountain is in the lobby area and coffee also only in the lobby area. I think every hotel of any standing should have water in the fridge in the room and a kettle with tea and coffee as minimum.
Our favorite hotel when staying in San Francisco! Great location, amazing views and super nice employees!!!
Compared with some other reviewers, I feel quite fortunate to have been allocated a room that I genuinely liked, with a wonderful view of Alcatraz from my bed (see picture). The room was clean, quiet, sufficiently far from the lifts, and the bathroom worked perfectly. Perhaps my Diamond Elite/Ambassador status helped? I live in England and have a real appreciation for historic buildings like this one, so I fully understand that age inevitably brings certain maintenance challenges. Hearing and feeling the wind blowing through the corridors and lift shafts doesn’t bother me. However, waiting up to 20 minutes for a lift is simply unacceptable. Of the hotel’s three lifts, one is permanently out of service and another only travels as far as the 15th floor. It also makes me question the hotel’s investment priorities. Considerable funds appear to have been spent refurbishing the exterior façade while essential internal infrastructure remains neglected: unreliable lifts, recurring TV signal interruptions and unstable Wi-Fi. The age of the building, however, does not explain the lack of some very basic services: * There are no tea or coffee-making facilities in the room, yet complimentary hot drinks are only available until 10:00 a.m. Why? * The minibar has been removed, leaving room service as the only option—and that operates on very limited hours. Why? * The laundry service was frustrating from start to finish. I was first promised delivery by next day 6:00 p.m., then 7:00 p.m., then 8:00 p.m. After chasing several times, I was eventually told it would be available at breakfast the following morning. Instead, someone knocked on my door at 9:40 p.m., despite my Do Not Disturb sign being displayed. Why was such a straightforward request made so complicated? * During the day, I tried calling the Front Desk, Room Service and Instant Service. Each number simply rang and rang without anyone answering. It genuinely felt as though the hotel had been abandoned. * As a last resort, I emailed Reception, only to receive an automatic reply stating that emails were not monitored at weekends. For a hotel of this calibre, that is simply not acceptable. On a positive note, the catering staff were consistently friendly and helpful, and David at reception provided a warm, professional welcome at both check-in and check-out. One final observation: almost everything is expensive—food, drinks and hotel services alike. That said, I suspect this reflects San Francisco in general as much as the hotel itself. Like a heavy Nob Hill fee of $35 per night. Overall, this is a beautiful historic property in a superb location. Unfortunately, inconsistent service and operational shortcomings prevent it from delivering the premium experience that its reputation and pricing promise. For that reason, I rate it 3 stars—and that’s largely because I have a genuine affection for historic buildings. The hotel has all the ingredients to be exceptional. Unless execution improves, however, it does undermine an otherwise outstanding property.
The location was perfect where you can walk to Trader Joes for water, walk to the pier if you like steep hills and the cable car is just one block from the hotel. Atmosphere was professional and they had a person at the desk who could help make reservations for your dining or sightseeing tours. Atmosphere was beautiful with roof top restaurant looking over the entire city and with periodic dancing with professional band. Rooms were clean, terrific views and spacious. Value: worth the money spent; cleanliness: cleaned every two days unless requested additional day. It was spotless. Noise level: quiet; Amenities: never used as I went exploring the city. NEVER GO TO THE TENDERLOIN AREA AS ITS VERY DANGEROUS.

Great location, beautiful historical building.
Rooms are a bit outdated but still beautiful.

I liked where the location was
My pillow case was dirty, we didn’t get a updated tv it wasn’t a smart tv and couldn’t even watch any shows we wanted to watch. Also wasn’t fully told that we will be charged for parking even tho we are staying inside that hotel location. Also there was no way to keep my drinks cold no refrigerator in the unit
Amazing delicious breakfast, wonderful staff, fabulous location. The body wash and lotion so special that I bought some. Very clean and luxurious. Looking forward to staying there again.
The bed was a little softer than I like. But everything else was so wonderful that it just didn’t matter.
Beautiful views, clean and well-appointed room, historic charm, centrally located.
Room service food was good
Not as extravagant or tech friendly. Ice on one floor. Soft drink vending machines. Working refrigerator and mini bar.
Just the view from the top. The food at Top of the mark was good.
Everything, hotel is old and needs renovation. The first room we checked in was horrible, windy, noisy, very tiny bathroom. No amenities, no refrigerator or coffee machine. We had to ask for extra towels.
Great hotel in a fantastic spot, is currently undergoing renovations but this was not a substantial disruption to my stay. Room was lovely and staff were excellent. No complaints from me.
Comfortable and close to events

Location is amazing, Staff were great. It is clean and relatively comfortable.
It is dated and needs to be upgraded. The fixtures in the room are old and wonky, the hot water takes a long time, the toilet makes a crazy noise when you flush. The elevators squeal horrendously. There was a fridge in the room and it was locked. When we asked for a key, they said that it was locked because it was non-functional, but then didn't offer to give one that worked. Also - there was no mini-bar, no bottled water, no vending machine for drinks/food, and the TV did not have a way to stream or cast.
Locations was good
We reserved a double room and they said they were out. Then charged us for a rollout bed. There was something splattered on the wall
Not enough front desk staff. Tv didn’t work well. Low water pressure in bath sink. No tea out early in morning. Top of the Mark a shadow of its former self
The hotel is a very grand , old hotel with an impressive lobby. However, the rooms are tired and rather shabby . The mini bar is locked and unavailable & there are no tea/coffee facilities in the rooms. There is a water machine in reception, available 24 hours and complimentary coffee in the morning. Staff are friendly and the breakfast good.
The location was the wonderful Nob Hill area. 15 minute walk to Chinatown and North Beach. The room was immaculate and the view was great. Also the top of the Mark has the best view from the 15th floor.
A little pricey, but that's life.
Everything
Difficult to find entrance the first time
Loved the location! The history and little museum was fascinating. Very old world classic luxury! The historical architecture and marble made you feel luxurious.
Great, historic hotel at the top of Nob Hill. Rooms are older and could use an updating, but the bed was very comfortable and it was very quiet. The location is great, but you're going to have to walk up and down the hill to get anywhere. Worth staying here if for no other reason than going up to the Top of the Mark and get you a drink. (You don't need to stay there for that). Otherwise, the hotel seemed a bit understaffed, but the stop was accommodating. As a Diamond Ambassador, I expect to get everything that I'm owed without asking, and I did. To me, this is huge. Too bad IHG doesn't have more upscale hotels in the US.
We stayed at this hotel two nights while visiting San Francisco. It was a lovely experience. Room was clean and comfortable. Hotel is in a great location.
Some years since we have stayed there, but still one of the best. Great location and view from room over the city was awesome. Bit dated in places, but undergoing renovation at the moment.
The property is becoming thread bare and dated, living on a reputation of years gone by. Even the Top of the Mark is not aging well, chairs and stools cracked and peeling. But the biggest surprise is no coffee in the room, even holiday inns offer this. But you can hang a sign on your door to get coffee delivered in the morning for $10.. The bright spot was the front desk, Aman worked tirelessly to get us in the proper room, he is a star! Thank you to him
The beds and the bar
The staff on the front desk were rude and unhelpful
Really tired hotel with no soul. No bell/ doorman to greet, 1 FD clerk on, so had to wait to check in. No answer when I tried 3 extensions to have my car brought around. Room was just ok, no slippers, mini bar locked, no water offered. Bathroom sink mixing valve do not work and water was scalding hot. I own luxury hotels and the once famous Mark Hopkins is in decline…the owners or GM need to wake up.

Nic.
I was excited to check this hotel out but ended up disappointed. From my understanding his hotel just turned 100 years... and it shows. Property is extremally dated. I did enjoy the location but that was about it.
Was very elegant , all you could expect from a nice hotel … pretty bar
No pool
For the money, this hotel was really disappointing. First the positives: location was great, and the breakfast was pretty good, too. The pictures they have of the lobby as looking classical are false. The lobby looked tired. Nothing seemed to fit. It was not elegant and time honored as portrayed on their website. We had a checkin of 3:00 pm but by 3:30 our room still was not ready. The person at the counter offered a different room with a view on the 15th floor. Sounded good. The room we got as "an upgrade" was grotty. Marks on the walls, chipped and peeling paint, woodwork with fillers and an outdated bathroom.(bathtub/whower combo with a shower curtain). The bed was also really uncomfortable, but the pillows weren't bad. They offered no in room coffee, tea or water and there was a locked "honor bar" with no access and no refrigerator. When I called down, the woman said they didn't want people breaking their glasses and then offered to send up some glasses for us. They couldn't provide plastic cups for those not trusted with glassware? I'm sorry...no. I was also really disappointed in The Top of the Mark. Again, grotty and tired. I had been before when it was elegant and time honored. It was sad to see it had gone downhill. I would not stay here again for the money spent.
I am in San Francisco for work for two weeks. We started staying at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins, but ended up switching to the Intercontinental San Francisco. The customer service at Intercontinental Mark Hopkins was horrible, the employees were not friendly nor helpful. The food was overpriced (but, everything in San Francisco is overpriced) and not good. The accommodations were better than I thought considering the age of the hotel. The location was decent too. But I still can’t get over just how unhelpful and condescending the staff is. One example, I left a message for the concierge regarding a package delivery and still have not received a return call.
Excellent dog park across the street. Cable car ran right to property. We saw a show at the Masonic which was walking distance. First time in Nob Hill was great.
The Mark is a classic - it's an excellent hotel. Kind of unfair to compare it to the Fairmont, but I think it's a better value.
Old world style and charm with friendly and helpful staff. The location was perfect for us with a cable car stop right out the front. The Top Deck sky bar was a highlight!
breakfast buffet was excellent
Dinner menu needs some improvement in my opinion.
Check in was friendly, professional, and quick. Location was perfect and loved the view.
Property is extremely outdated for the cost. Absolutely not a luxury or premium experience by any measure in 2026. From the facilities to the room, everything felt due for an update.
Great room, we had a corner room which had lots of space. Great views. Good location in the city as well.
Although you could get water downstairs in the lobby there was none available in the rooms.
Hotel is quite grand and service is excellent. Room is a good size as is the bathroom. Decent water pressure. Nice TV and channel selection. Super location. Needs a little maintenance. Hotel of this caliber should not have broken tiles in the lobby. Showing signs of wear do maintenance would push the place to a five.
The service from the hotel staff was impeccable. Issa Q at the front desk was very personable, accommodating and helpful. He is a great asset to this hotel. The location of this hotel was perfect. 10 minute walk from a lovely Italian restaurant, Fino. 25 minute walk to Fishermans wharf and pier 39. The room was lovely and had everything I needed.
The breakfast brunch was second to none!
Location
No pool and everything is tired. Needs a full refurbishment
The hotel has some historic Charme
Being used to the very high standards of InterContinental hotels, I was unfortunately very disappointed upon arrival. The facilities are in urgent need of renovation. Staying in the lower-level rooms is almost impossible, as the window insulation is extremely poor and does not block out the noise from the nearby street. While the rooms themselves are acceptable, cleanliness was below expectations, with dust balls in the closet and visible dirt in the corners. After initially being assigned a room on the second floor, I requested a change due to the noise. Although the room was changed, the replacement room was significantly smaller, and the concierge did not inform me of this beforehand. In addition, the check-in experience felt rather cold and impersonal. I was also surprised to see staff members wearing visibly dirty clothing, which further contributed to the disappointing overall impression.
Had an upgrade to suite with sunroom. Marvelous room.
Top of hill. Walking is really good exercise up and down hills. Top of the mark was great. Wonderful views.
I understand that this hotel has a long legacy in San Francisco, but today it is a disappointing stay. TL;DR: this place markets itself as a "luxury" hotel (direct from the IHG official page), but it actually (with the exception of the lobby) feels like an outdated, poorly maintained Hampton Inn. It definitely does not live up to what you expect of a 4 star hotel in a major city. The halls and my room were full of obviously deferred maintenance -- a soap holder in the shower hanging halfway off the wall; ice machines with a "out of order" sign on every floor but the 3rd; wall doorstops broken; chipped paint everywhere. The rooms do not have amenities I would expect, such as in-room coffee (I was advised they have removed these) or power outlets near the bed (seriously, they haven't even added those lamps with power outlets in the base that so many other hotels have added to address this problem). The bathroom in my room was uncomfortably tiny and, if you're a woman, the lighting was terrible for purposes of makeup. On the good side, the lobby is indeed grand and makes a good first impression, and the bed was extremely comfortable. But overall this place definitely has the feel of a hotel trying to rest on its laurels while not making the investment needed to deliver the experience they advertise. Very much a hotel that is trying to rest on its reputation and laurels without delivering the stay you would expect. I will say that the bed was very This very much feels like a hotel that is doing its best to rest on its laurels as a
Cool historical building
Needs renovation
This was my second stay at this property, and the experience could not have been more different! Arriving at check in, I gave our booking details for the two rooms to the assistant, and at no point were our Diamond Ambassador and Diamond status acknowledged. On the contrary, I was advised that room upgrades are not effective on reward nights (completely at odds with the Ambassador website) and something which was recognized at all of the other IHG establishments on our road trip, all of which provided upgrades and extras without request. When I discussed paying for an upgrade and suggesting a suite, I was told “there is no availability for what you are willing to pay”. Since I was entitled to a room upgrade in any event, I did propose a further $100 per night for a suite, but this was never accepted or any alternative amount proposed. I did speak latterly with David on reception (someone I had met on my last visit), but he could not offer anything other than to highlight the standard beverage assignment entitlement of my Diamond membership saying “he did give you a $20 food and beverage credit” ……moot point!! Other staff members in the restaurant and the door staff we charming and professional, however I remain utterly disappointed with the attitude at check in, and would never stay at this hotel again. Incidentally, the 2 star rating is purely in recognition of the other staff members who were courteous and interactive throughout.
Had a wonderful stay overall and wanted to leave a review, especially coming from someone who has previously worked in hospitality. The hotel’s historic character really stands out and gives the property a unique atmosphere. The location is excellent as well, with plenty to do nearby and easy access to many parts of San Francisco. Staying in Nob Hill definitely added to the experience. We stayed from 5/8–5/9 for two nights as a family of four and booked a Double City View room. The room was comfortable, clean, and worked well for our family. The beds were comfortable, and the nighttime city views were a highlight of the stay. Housekeeping also did a great job keeping everything well maintained. The service throughout the hotel was excellent. The bell staff and valet attendants were friendly, professional, and very accommodating. The front desk team was always attentive and welcoming whenever we needed assistance. A special thank you to Maletina, San, and the rest of the front desk staff for making us feel welcomed throughout our stay. The customer service alone deserves 5 stars. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a classic and historic San Francisco experience. We look forward to visiting again in the future.
Restaurant and Top of the Mark view of the City
Ice machine on a different floor
What a lovely hotel. Fantastic setting and facilities. Friendly staff, reception and the rooftop bar. Our room was lovely, well appointed and following an upgrade (our honeymoon) big room and comfy larger bed. Of most note is the staff. Roy in reception made us feel most welcome, organised our check in efficiently and smoothly. Couldn't have asked for a better arrival and greeting. Roy also gave us some advice for our trip to Hawaii and followed this up with an email. As a lovely surprise Roy also arranged flowers, wine and chocolate strawberries for our room. Delicious thoughtful surprise. Also want to mention Tony on the door who set us off in to town in the right direction!
It was close to our venue
A little overpriced for the food, and it was okay.
Attention to detail and very good customer service
Not a good choice of Wines in restaurant where we dined , we love a good Pinot noir and the 2 choices were not the best and for the price point very disappointing
Proximity to Masonic Concert building.
Location to Pier 39 and the Tonga room, view from the Top of the Mark was amazing, Staff was extremely friendly at check-in and when they passed you in the hallway.

I loved the view. Size of the room and nice bathroom.
They have nothing in the room but furniture and TV. No coffee no tea, no espresso maker. No electric tea kettle to boil water even for instant coffee. No microwave. No iron or ironing board. Just towels shampoo and wash. Very minimal for a 5 star hotel.
Great location, efficient check in despite long queue.
Interiors are dated though it’s cleaned well every day. There’s no kettle no coffee machine no slippers nothing, and refrigerator was locked! U have to scan a QR code to “order” amenities which we felt was very inconvenient. Surely supplying such things should be standard?
It's in San Francisco
-very dated interior, very rough -ice machine on floor 3 only of 17 floors -no coffee in room, no cork screw available, only two glasses in room -dirty carpet, dirty doors, marks on walls and doors, filthy windows - expensive parking -check in at 4pm took 30 min and room wasn't ready, 50 people in line. -Top of the Mark used to be stunning, now just very worn out. Tables and chair seats worn out.
