Loved the location, the very friendly staff, good choice of food, the swimming pool and the outdoor spaces for sitting. The room was very pleasant and the bathroom with a walk-in shower was exactly what we wanted.
Mattress was very hard.
Great character hotel, helpful staff, parking and fab location
Room could use a little updating
The property was excellent would recommend to anyone a lovely atmosphere and the staff were really friendly.
Very close to the beach.
Nice cozy bedroom in a characterful hotel
Noise from the next door hotel’s extractor fan
Short walk to the sea front. Off the main road, so nice and peaceful. Lovely dining and a good choice of fish dishes. Friendly, helpful staff. Short drive to Exeter, Seaton, Donkey Sanctuary etc. Certainly plenty to do each day. A good base to stay at.
Hard pillows, but that's just because we're used to softer. The shower was just a dribble but was clean and modern and adequate.
Only polite description for the breakfast is disappointing. For the rate that’s charged you would expect more. Especially if you’re not having a cooked breakfast. The choice was very limited. Coffee dreadful.
See above as regarding breakfast. Bedroom and bathroom nice but shower needs checking.
Able to access town easily
Lack of draft beer in the bar. Not easy to access a parking space.
Loved the little pool, such we had all to ourselves. Lovely comfy bed, slept really well. Great area and not too far to walk to anything. Very quaint and loved the fact we were in danger room Queen Victoria stayed in all those years ago. They allowed my son to have something off menu for breakfast, very adaptable and warm. Would definitely come back here.
Not having a lock on the changing room door but I'm guessing you could have several people in there changing, it was just a bit odd!
food very good especially afternoon high tea
noisiest room ive ever been in
Food was excellent Room very nice Small amount of mold in shower Very close to town centre
nothing
Comfortable Room, interesting building, quiet location
Poor quality breakfast, sausage & mushroom undercooked . No pot of tea, tea had to be made from spluttering hot water urn that wasn’t boiling.
Great location. Quiet street. Easy to find and park.
A bit shabby. Poor flow from shower. Breakfast staff rushed off their feet so not very attentive. Cooked food and fresh fruit not of a great quality
It was very nice to have our bags taken to our room and be directed to the lift etc. very helpful young man doing two jobs. Room was tastefully decorated with very nicely co ordinated colours as was the rest of the hotel. Breakfast was very good and served by very pleasant waitress who also brought our evening meal. Food good. Very easy walk to the sea front. Nice gardens and pleasant outdoor seating areas.
Staff attitude of one person in particular could have been better. Parking not very easy.
Hotel close to the sea front but far enough away to be quiet. Comfortable room. Excellent shower. The drawing room and adjacent outside terrace are beautiful. Good swimming pool.
Disappointing that at breakfast coffee and tea are self-service from flasks. No tea or coffee pots available. Hot water for tea in a flask so not hot enough.
Location
Dirty rooms Lights full of dust Crampt and uncomfortable
Good location with parking available. Helpful staff. Lovely room with ensuite bathroom. Good choices for breakfast.
The location
The shower water flow was just a dribble. they tried to fix it but were unable
Lovely building. Very friendly and helpful staff. Big bedroom. Close to seafront.Able to go down to the Bar in the evening and order one dish from the main menu to eat in the Bar without prior booking, which was very useful.
They welcome dogs, which did not trouble us at all but might if you are dog averse.
10/10 for the hotel and staff , room , food , location. Myself and my daughter will be going back.

Nice old property with lots of history

Great location. Staff are lovely and room was very nice.
The proximity to beach was great, the indoor pool all to ourselves was wonderful, staff were very helpful, lovely beach view from the landscaped gardens where you can sit with a drink & relax, The room was light & roomy & the bed very comfortable. We also requested an extension to our leaving time by an hour to 11am when enquired at reception, which due to a medical condition made the vacating of the room stress free, (note to myself that I would enquire in advance directly with the hotel when booking next time ) we would certainly return.
I personally did not like my salmon & scrambled egg on toast served in a bowl as this required my arthritic hands to manipulate cutting the toast in an uncomfortable position, but I will request a plate if I ordered this again.
Brilliant! Loved it!
Everything
The Hotel itself was cosy and unique and very comforting. We had great service at breakfast and the food was really nice.
Found a few hairs in the shower that's the only fault.
Quaint, incredibly comfortable, free parking, good sized breakfast and nice welcome from reception staff
Not much to dislike but felt the waiting staff in the restaurant could be a wee bit more friendly. To encourage guests to use the restaurant in the evening you have to make them feel valued and welcomed. Ive never heard of a hotel where you need to book a meal for that night, just after breakfast. What happened to spontaneity?? Also, with my husbands mobility I was surprised we were in a room furthest from reception
I just wanted a single room, which was adequate in all respects - other than a bit noisy.
It was noisy. The lift in the adjoining lift shaft was creaky and quite loud, but worst was the extractor fan (from a room below) immediately outside the window - although it did not run during the night, thankfully.
Breakfast very good. Location very convenient for promenade.
Our room had 3 steps up to the en-suite which seemed a bit awkward, especially for more elderly people.
Historical building in a convenient part of town. Staff were friendly and helpful. Restaurant was good. There is a swimming pool and h Gym and sufficient car parking.
The duvet was rather hard , not soft and comfy,
Location was excellent. Staff were all lovely. Breakfast was nice and plentiful.
Even for a beautiful old building the room looked a bit tired. Broken tiles in the bathroom.
The bed was so uncomfortable and the room was so small with no real surfaces for makeup etc . The bathroom was the same , I had to put toiletries on the toilet top
The property is nice and close to the seafront and very clean

Location - easy walk to beach and town Pleasant lounge and garden
TINY BATHROOM! Main course special on 18th August - Barnsley chop UNDERCOOKED
Reception, bedroom, drawing room, situation, lift.
Car parking.
Parking wasn't guaranteed but I think they could make the grass parking a bit wider.
Small, cosy, near the sea, good food and service
The parking isn’t the easiest
It’s location and ambience of an old building and all the different seating areas both inside and out
Stairs to bedroom quite steep
Beautiful location, great facilities:plenty of separate, calm, well curated spaces to relax ie ground floor patio plus raised terraces, drawing room, all with sea views. bar, lounge, pool and gym. Staff were friendly and accommodating without being overbearing. Food was excellent.
My single room was ideal, but subject to a little noise from the lift-shaft and an extractor unit/generator outside the window- had I known, I would have brought some earplugs. However, this was a minor issue and did not spoil my stay.
Location was great, lovely views and outdoor seating area. Beds were small but comfortable enough. Lovely swimming pool, could do with a deeper end, but still nice.
Those carpets really need an upgrade. Weirdly, not enough electric sockets in the bedrooms. Breakfast really basic, could do with a big upgrade too.
The staff were really friendly and helpful. I had problems with the room and staff did their best to help. The hotel itself is beautiful..plenty of places to relax, including a bar, and near to the seafront. Its about 10 min walk to town. The room was kept clean. Many couples return year after year.
My room was pretty small, you couldnt open the bathroom door properly. I'm used to that as a solo traveller. The bed was very soft. However, the worst thing was the sound of running water which came from a pipe in a corner of the room. The pipe was also hot, not what you want in a heatwave. The noise only continued for one night but was very annoying and I couldnt sleep. Meals at the hotel were pretty basic.
Location views from the terrace to sea - friendliness of staff nothing too much trouble
Nothing
Location was great, breakfast was varied and lovely and fresh.
Would have been nice to have had a selection of biscuits in our room instead of 1 packet of 2 biscuits between us. Room wasn't cheap and even other cheaper rooms offer a packet each.
Excellent location, very historic, unique hotel. Rooms were well equipped with water, tea and coffee. Good housekeeping service. Lovely garden bar terrace with view of the sea. Gym and pool facilities were good.
The room had ample storage, and the bathroom, while small, was modern and adequate. The receptionist was welcoming, and, unusually for today, we were escorted to our room. The location was quiet, and convenient for the sea front and shopping centre. The wifi signal was strong.
The on-site parking was limited and hard work to access. The spaces were narrow and congested. The hotel decor and furnishings were very dated, and resembled something from the 1960s. The only modern elements, in our room, were the shower room and the flat screen TV. The breakfast was, again, reminiscent of 1960s British catering: proper coffee and pastries were not available. A foreign visitor staying at this hotel might not find the selection appealing.
Breakfast excellent, bar staff very accommodating, rooms clean.
Shower was rubbish! Pressure very poor, shower head too small. Swimming pool disappointing, dark and no seating.
I loved the drawing room and outside space. The views were lovely and the 'feel' of the hotel was very smart, comfortable and relaxed. I also loved the history.
It was all really good.
Long wait to check in
Excellent hotel in a perfect location in Sidmouth - well accessible from main roads, has a parking, and just meters away from the beach and the town centre. The hotel, the staff, the breakfast - everything was absolutely superb. If we are coming back to Sidmouth, this hotel would our first choice.
The EV charger on the parking would be really beneficial.
Cool old hotel, great location and staff.
My bedroom window overlooked the world’s loudest extractor fan. Had I not been extremely drunk following excessive libations, I would certainly not have fallen asleep.
Breakfast was outstanding.room was super clean and comfortable.staff were always helpful.
Can't find anything
Lovely breakfast Classy place Enjoyed my stay
This is an old family run hotel with lots of quaint and quirky features, which we liked, with a lovely drawing room leading to a small outdoor area. It's in a good location too. We stayed in a standard room which was reasonably priced but also quite small as expected. The bathroom was compact but the shower was very good. The breakfast was very good.
The main thing was that the pillows were flat and hard which obviously lead to a less than perfect night's sleep. The only other thing was the size of the bath towels - very small!
Friendly and helpful staff. A lovely character building.
No Wifi in bedroom.
Location comfortable friendly clean and homely
Parking was a little difficult but I managed ok
Excellent
Room 15 opened onto the car park and on a route to the pool and gym so people walking by most of the time. We only had one smallish opening window next to the door. This affects our overall score.
Couldn’t fault cleanliness . Short walk to seafront . Didn’t use the swimming pool or eat there so can’t comment on that.
Wonderful setting, lovely outdoor area, nice pool, good twin room
Breakfast was average - poor coffee, cooked options ok but did not wow
Layout at breakfast was good, tables well spaced.
Breakfast was very average not very well presented.
Room good, terrace excellent.
Parking restricted
Loved it was so old & still had the features in the rooms & around the hotel, grounds were lovely & well cared for like the Hotel, good parking, bed was so comfortable & big bonus for us was there was a bath freshly cooked breakfast was a big plus for us delicious. When we first came in we were greeted by Mike who even walked us up to our room went through everything we needed for a great stay. Drinks were reasonably priced. Well done having such a wonderful hotel. We will be back
Nothing
Friendly and helpful
Very hot weather , could have had a fan in the room
Dinner was fantastic, as was breakfast. Good choice, and served with a smile.
Parking was a bit confusing, but the receptionist did her best to help us.
Location and gardens round hotel. All the staff we saw were the most helpful and friendly I have ever come across. I had several specific requests relating to my grandson and all were sorted on the phone and available when we arrived.
The main bedroom was modern and very comfotable with excellent amount of storage but twin room rather small and beds a little dated. Although Queen Victoria had stayed in this room!
The hotel grounds were lovely 😍. The dinner was nice and not too badly priced. The staff was helpful and the hotel was not to far from the sea.
The bed was so hard. The lift door on the 1st floor wouldn't lock so the lift would not work and being disabled it was difficult to walk down the stairs.
Very quaint old school hotel
Pool could do with updating
Close to the beach and ok parking .
Very basic and not greatly clean .
The tv didn’t work at all
Historic hotel with sea views, beautifully maintained with a very appealing food menu. Comfortable rooms and 1m deep swimming pool. Has parking. Family run hotel; labour of love.
Good parking. Easy walk to town.
Small room, have had bigger ones in this hotel
The place was just spectacular. Wonderful historic building, superb location, excellent dinner and service at it. Use of garden for breakfast if desired. Would definitely like to go back sometime.
The only small thing was that the latest time for dinner was 7.30. Having walked all day in really hot weather, I made it by 7.30 after a shower but only just!
The single room was better than expected. The restaurant was very good on all areas.
The parking! I appreciate the hotels position but it would have helped to have been warned how difficult it was.I spent a lot of time trying to find somewhere and on a hot day after a long journey,it was the last thing I needed!
Great location
N/A.
Little gem with lots of history! this hotel is nicely located close to the beach. It has lots of history behind and each room is decorated with great care. Good breakfast and very attentive staff.
Character and charm
Rooms a bit outdated with furniture and carpets
one of the owners of the property went out of her way for us
I am so sorry I have to give a review that is so critical but other than several of staff Mikey and Amanda who both were very accommodating and Mikey was the only one who gave the place some fun and atmosphere. The gardens and Hotel are lovely and convenient for the beach and town centre.Baring in mind we paid over £165 per night b&b the inside, atmosphere and the value of the room were abismal ,and poor value for money. My room was small over crowed with old furniture and dreary, tv worked intermitently !the bed was rock hard ,the drink facility was poor two biscuits never replaced after the first night, also the following day the tea pot had not been cleaned out.The carpet was from the 60's and decore was scruffy. There was decent storage and the bathroom had been updated but the shower was poor and there were no toileties .When asked we were given a small piece of soap and told there was a dispenser in the shower. This Travel lodge quality! went down for breakfast the restaurant was dreary no atmosphere and tired surroundings, the were no tea pot just a flask of water and coffee ,the tea tasted aweful we went and bought our own tea bags. The produce was excellent however if you wanted an extra egg sausage or bacon it was a cost of £1.50 I managed to swap my tomato and fried potatoes for an extra slice of bacon !The atmosphere was very down beat regimented with the tables being very close. The lunch and dinner menu looked good but the though of sitting in the restaurant did not inspire . i really felt that there was no value I understand its old which is great but it doesnt stop them offering a upmarket feel the the room and a comfortable bed. After the first night we tried to find somewhere else but could get somewhere to accommodate us for two nights .We met some lovely people in the bar and Mikey made the feel good but fundamentally you pay for a excellent room and a comfy bed which we didnt get. They need to really look at their offer very disappointed!!we stopped the weekend before in guest house in Llandudno at half the price which was far superia in every way and under half the price.Ruined our time away many thanks.
Excellent location, friendly staff, very nice breakfast. The hotel had an interesting history.
Good location
Small room., very weak shower and small bathroom
Love the feel of the hotel, it's friendly, has character, and as a solo traveller feel very comfortable there..my go to hotel
Can't say I found anything I didn't like
Great location and very peaceful
Probably not itemising what you had on the bill at the end of our stay. Had 3 glasses of the same wine and all different prices. Not a complaint just would be nice to know exactly what everything was
Location, friendly staff and evening meals.
Long corridors and many stairs despite a small lift.
Property is in a perfection location, it is just a bit dated.
Limited sockets in the bedroom and no mirror near a socket for drying hair.
Historic, comfortable, nice swimming pool.
Nothing
The can do attitude and courtesy of all the people working there.
A small refrigerator in my room. Coffee at breakfast wasn't made to order.
The ambience
Nothing disabled toilet
Good location just off the sea front with parking. Nice place to relax.
Well unfortunately there was a kitchen ventilation fan below the window and although it was switched off overnight it could do with some sound attenuation. There was also no air conditioning but in my view it would be simple to have this retro fitted around the building.
Food was really nice. Hotel full of character. Pleasant staff, made us feel welcome.
Location, food, friendliness of staff, comfort and cleanliness.
We stayed for 14 days and the menu choice for the dinner didn't change, although there was a daily 'special'.
Outdoor area, location, swimming pool
My room was tiny and quite noisy as close to the lift
Very clean
Sausages
Excellent location and very good value for money.
It was all good.
Very helpful staff, excellent restaurant with great service. Nice comfortable rooms and beds.
nothing
Food was good Unfortunately my man friend and I asked for separate single rooms and his fid not live up to mine Having a noisy generator near and as he was poorly the first couple of days stayed in his room .not pleasant
Chips were hard diisappointed as looking forward to fidh and chips, therwise meals good
Location
Lack of electrical sockets. Heat in room.
Excellent stay, for my parents They would stay there again Many Thanks
Location - very near seafront, free parking
Nothing
A charming hotel. Lovely building with a beautiful lounge on the first floor. It’s old fashioned in the nicest possible way and this is reflected in their clientele. The staff are exceptional - the man who checked me in and the one behind the bar, both seemed to really enjoy their jobs and the banter with guests. This makes all the difference to the ‘customer experience’. The grounds are also very nice and you can see the sea at the end of the road.
The mattress topper didn’t fit the bed - it was a large not a standard single so it felt a bit odd - but this is a very minor niggle.
