Melford Nuwaraeliya

We stayed in Melford Nuwaraeliya for a couple of days and had a wonderful experience. Mr. Bandara pays close attention to his guests and is always ready to help. On the day of our trip to Horton's National Park, he kindly packed us a delicious breakfast at 5 a.m. at our request, and it was truly exceptional. The breakfast on our other day was equally delightful. Our room was spacious and had a beautiful antique charm to it, while the hotel lobby offers a stunning view of Gregory Lake. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Nuwaraeliya.

We recently spent two wonderful nights at Melford in Nuwara Eliya, and it was an absolute delight from start to finish. A huge part of what made our stay so special was our super host, Bandara. He is genuinely one of the friendliest, most helpful, and down-to-earth people you could ever hope to meet. His warm smile and top-notch hospitality made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The food was another major highlight—incredibly flavourful and served with wonderful variety. And given the crisp Nuwara Eliya weather, asking for tea multiple times was a must, and Bandara always made sure it was delivered piping hot and freshly brewed. What more could anyone possibly ask for? If you are looking for a cozy, heartwarming getaway in Nuwara Eliya, Melford is the place to be.

De gastvrijheid. Het was geen probleem om een heel vroeg ontbijt te maken en toen ik mijn ereader had laten liggen heeft de host ‘m nog meegegeven met een buschauffeur zodat ik ‘m weer kon oppikken op onze volgende locatie. Zijn tip voor een restaurant was ook heel leuk!

This is a great place to stay. We had a family room including breakfast and stayed for two nights. The service is great. Very tasty home made breakfast, laundry service and evening thee brought to the room. The hotel is in an old English style building. Not luxurious but very good value. And the staff is super nice.

The room was a bit humid due to the heavy rains. The owner fixed that with a portable heater

Mooi uitzicht over Gregory leuk en van daar op wandelafstand via het lake, victoria park naar het centrum. Totaal 45min?

Kamer was prima, schoon maar verouderd. Niets bijzonders. Bed was heel erg hard, niet comfortabel. Was voor ons prima voor 1 nacht.

We stayed here for 4 nights ,we had great experience, host were very very humble and helpful breakfast was one of the best we ate in Shrilanka and they had made my son's favourite dish everyday. All 4 days we had different menu for breakfast, rooms were beautiful and clean ,superb view , Thank you Bandara Sir and Milith Sir, for making our stay pleasant and memorable.

We spent a lovely couple of nights at Melford. The room was spacious and clean with a view out over a beautifully maintained garden towards Gregory Lake. The breakfasts were outstanding and delicious though way more food than we could eat! The location is a little out of town, on a quiet street but easy to get a tuk-tuk into the centre or a longer walk around the lake. The owner and staff we met were very pleasant, friendly and helpful. If you like to stay in smaller privately run guesthouses then I'd have no hesitation recommending Melford Nuwaraeliya.

Очень хороший гостеприимный владелец и персонал, и просто шикарные завтраки! Историческое здание, которому больше 50 лет, но выглядит оно до сих пор в хорошем состоянии!. Горячий душ, отличный напор! Хорошие матрасы, спать было очень сладко, просыпалась отдохнувшей. Теплые одеяла и есть пледы, так что тут точно не замерзнете. И деревянные полы. Рассветы, закаты из окон! Я бы с удовольствием вернулась. Хозяин сделал апгрейд номера и это был лучший подарок на мой день рождения. Нам так понравилось, что мы продлили еще на два дня.

Немного на отшибе, от основной части города. И то что соседнее строящееся здание закрыло обзор, который раньше был у этого места.

We had a really nice stay here. The room was cozy and comfortable, everything was in good condition and worked perfectly. The owners were very kind and welcoming, they even brought us tea with cookies, which was such a lovely touch after a long journey. One of the best things was the hot water and strong water pressure — everything in the bathroom worked great, which made our stay even more comfortable. The location is also very good. Overall, we truly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this place!

Wir waren nur für eine Nacht auf der Weiterfahrt nach Ella in der Unterkunft. Grundlegend war es völlig in Ordnung. Das Frühstück war sehr toll und traditionell. Die Lage direkt in der Nähe vom Gregory Lake hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Die Betten waren sehr bequem und die Ausstattung war für uns für die Nacht völlig ausreichend. Das gesamte Personal war sehr höfflich und zuvorkommend.

Im Bett haben wir das ein oder andere kleine schwarze Haar gefunden. Das war für uns nicht tragisch, ist uns aber negativ aufgefallen.

Przemiła obsługa, bardzo dobre śniadanie i fajna lokalizacja, spacerkiem wokół jeziora. Pomagają załatwić transport, porozmawiają o atrakcjach, doradza. Polecam.

The location is great, just few minutes from the Lake Gregory..The room has vintage decor and its very spacious and very comfortable. The breakfast spread is awesome and they make some of the best milk tea 😁 the owner is very helpful, accomodating and great person to talk to.

We stayed in Melford Nuwaraeliya only for 1 night. Perfect accomodation, great location and views, excellent breakfast! The room has comfortable beds. Bandara was very kind, upgraded our room, gave some instructions and information about nearest sightseeing and restaurants. We are really enjoyed. Highly recommend! Bandara, wish you all the best!

Keep in mind that is little colder than other areas in Sri Lanka, that has nothing to do with this place :)

Extremely helpful host and super tastly break fast.

Really nice experience for the price. Host was kind and very helpful but also not overbearing and left us to enjoy our stay unless we needed him. The garden is beautiful and my 3 year old enjoyed running around it whilst I enjoyed the wonderful view of the lake. Front communal reception room is very nice and modern with sofas and big tv. It’s at the quiet end of the lake but an enjoyable walk to the town centre. Good local breakfast was served.

Not lots of restaurants or shops super close by, but just get a quick tuk tuk and enjoy the beautiful view on the way!

L’emplacement du logement est calme et très bien placé pour le rejoindre le centre ville. Nous avons très bien été accueilli par le propriétaire !! Il est très amicale et sociable. Il nous arrangé pour nos activités. Le petit déjeuner est excellent et très copieux !!!

Sehr schöne Unterkunft, etwas ausserhalb des geschäftigen Zentrums, jedoch alles Wichtige in Fussdistanz zu erreichen. Der Inhaber ist ausserordentlich liebenswürdig und hilfsbereit, hat uns super Tipps gegeben und Tuktuks zu unschlagbarem Preis organisiert. Ebenfalls sehr reichhaltiges und leckeres Sri-lankanisches Frühstück. Auch das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis war topp. In allerlei Hinsicht absolut zu empfehlen!

The host is the most attentive person. He helped us in all the ways possible: arranged a car for us, lent us a heater as it was cold and rainy… The room and bathroom were very big and spacious: the shower had great hot water. Breakfast is also really nice. Overall a great experience.

Das Zimmer war sehr geräumig, die Betten bequem und mit dicken Decken ausgestattet, sodass es nachts nicht zu kalt wurde. Das absolute Highlight der Unterkunft ist jedoch Gastgeber Bandara: unglaublich herzlich, hilfsbereit und einer der nettesten Menschen, die wir auf Sri Lanka getroffen haben. Er hilft bei Transfers, gibt tolle Tipps zu Ausflügen und Restaurants und erzählt viel Spannendes über Land und Leute. Auch das Frühstück war außergewöhnlich gut – nicht nur geschmacklich, sondern auch durch die liebevolle Erklärung zu jedem einzelnen Gericht. Viele Zutaten stammen sogar direkt aus Bandaras eigenem Garten.

למקום כזה קר היה עוזר להוסיף מערכת חימום. היה לנו קר מחוץ לשמיכות. הרבה זבובים בחדר.

Melford is an amazing stay. The room was very clean, and well maintained. The hotel staff is very hospitable, kind and helpful. Staying one day is not enough in this cute castle.

Every aspect of our stay at Melford exceeded our expectations. The check-in was very smooth, the owner, Bandara, went through all the things we could do and see in Nuwara Eliya. Breakfast was exceptional, scrumptious, and a huge spread of the tastiest of Sri Lankan food. The tea was heavenly! The bed was the BEST, we've had best sleep in all of our travels here. The room is stocked with tea, coffee, and high-quality linen. The area is also very nice, the place overlooks the vast Gregory Lake and park, which is a delightful sight to wake up to. Bandara and his staff are very soft spoken, kind, and take pride in their work. It's been a pleasure to stay at Melford. I'd highly recommend this place :)

The property is someone’s home turned into a small hotel. The property is well-maintained and it has all the amenities needed for a stay. It’s very close to the lake. The staff is exceptional. They prepared such a lovely breakfast for us, we will never forget. Very polite and always ready to serve.

Far from the main town area and therefore any restaurants are a Tuk Tuk ride away. The bed sheets and towels were a bit dirty and the duvet was a bit dishevelled so the filling of it was right at the end of the outer sheet so you couldn’t get all the warmth. WiFi was on and off throughout our time there

Melford Nuwara Eliya is a beautifully maintained gem right beside the historic sluice gate of Lake Gregory. The architecture and interiors exude classic colonial charm—tastefully designed with elegant wooden floors, strong vintage-style beds, and lovely canopy curtains that echo a bygone era. Our room was spacious, spotless, and well-equipped. The bathroom had great water pressure, a powerful exhaust fan, and instant hot water—everything worked perfectly. The balcony opened to a serene view of the lake, adding to the peaceful ambiance. A small garden near the reception with chairs on request made for an ideal place to relax in the crisp mountain air. What truly made our stay unforgettable was the outstanding hospitality. The owner and staff were incredibly polite, warm, and attentive. They were always just a call away—offering tea and coffee generously, letting us use their kitchen, and always welcoming us with genuine smiles. I have stayed in many hotels across Asia, but it is rare to find such sincere and caring service. Highly recommended for a quiet, comfortable stay with exceptional hospitality.

The only drawbacks were the ongoing construction next to the property, which caused some noise during the day, and the location being slightly away from the town center, making access to shops and restaurants less convenient. However, these were manageable—especially with the help of the owner, who arranged tuk tuks for us when needed, and the option to order food via the PickMe app made things easier.

Owner was super friendly and made us feel right at home immediately. Also very thoughtful to prepare packed breakfast for us as we had to leave early the next day. Room was spacious and comfortable with a good view of the lake. Decor and ambience was lovely too.

*The rooms desperately need upgrades. The bathroom had no curtains, turning the bathroom into a pool anytime someone showered. There was also a very bad smell from the bathroom and mould on the walls, which the host tried to address by drowning the room in air freshener before we arrived ... it didn't work *The room had no heating which, during our stay, was very much needed as it was a cold few days. The absence of heating also meant the beds were damp and the room was very humid. *Breakfast was meh. A large variety for sure, but mostly strange cold Sri Lankan dishes. The omelettes were cold. Unless you're really into Sri Lankan dishes, I would skip that. *Had this been our only hotel, I would've written it down to price. But we have been to several other hotels at the same price point that were better.

The property owner openly started criticising Indians when we interned the property. He said no one will entertain Indians except him in that area. And most of the Indians are thief. And there are cctv cameras to watch. I don’t know why he kept complainant about Indians.

The property was located a bit out of town so it was nice and quiet. The views were beautiful and it was nice to be a little out of the hustle and bustle but still walking distance to it all.

The hotel is clean, comfortable, has large rooms and has a beautiful view from the room we stayed in. The breakfast was wholesome and tasty and service very good. The approach road is a bit narrow and large vehicles find it a bit difficult to navigate, but that's a minor issue. Would definitely recommend this hotel

The room was the most beautiful we had in our whole trip to Sri Lanka. It was so comfortable. The owner was very kind and helped us organize a taxi to bring us to Sigirya (for a very fair price). And the driver was so nice that we use the same company afterwards. Breakfast was amazing. Location is great with a beautiful view!
