Lovely quirky old building, central location is good. Friendly staff, good food and drinks. Didn't experience any spooky encounters, lol
Good location
Loud music at night (9-12pm) could barely sleep and the front door to the building wouldn’t open so we got locked out until the building was staffed.
The location of the golden fleece is perfect! You also get a key so you can come and go as you please you aren't restricted to the pub's opening times. The staff were so lovely, I had requested the "who said romance is dead" package for mine and my husband's 10th wedding anniversary and they made sure everything was perfect with balloons, petals, chocolates, a bottle of fizz, a card from the team and an information book. The room was perfect! Well decorated, clean and stocked with everything you could need. The breakfast was really good too and the morning staff were a ray of sunshine to start the day. I was concerned about the noise of the pub at night with live music and jolly drinkers but from our room on the very top floor we couldn't hear a thing. The bedding was lovely, so soft and cozy and the white sheets were crisp. Sarah had serviced our room and I believe prepared our anniversary package and she did an amazing job so special shout out to her :) check out time was 11am and we are used to a 10am check out so that extra hour was nice.
If I was being really picky I would say it's a shame the check in time isn't a little earlier. For the price we paid it would have been nice to have a little more time in the room, we checked in at 3pm which honestly is about right for most hotels and I know they need time to make every room perfect before the next guest so we aren't mad at all, If anything it's just another reflection on how good the place is as we wished we got more time there.
Historic and plenty of character
Great location and easy to find. It was quiet and comfortable. Wish we could have stayed longer than 1 night. It was very clean. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was excellent. We shall return.
The whole package staff very friendly good breakfast love the building
Very friendly staff! Stunning room!
Beautiful room clean and comfortable
A bit expensive and quite noisy early morning with deliveries at shop opposite
Friendly staff. Great room with lots of character. Lovely atmosphere.
Breakfast was fab. Shambles Room and bathroom awesome - very atmospheric. Great view over the Shambles alleyway itself. Lived up to its haunted reputation - sound of horses just below my window for several seconds at 11.20pm. Nothing visible there - but of course it used to be a coaching inn hundreds of years ago.
Could have done with a few more working plug holes. There was one that didn't work. No problem though.
Great location Clean room, comfy bed Lovely food
Very noisy down in the pub
De locatie is super en het personeel meer dan vriendelijk
Eigen niets
It’s spooky and quirky lovely room Comfy bed and bedding , though the quilt was too hot in a heatwave .
The M&S lorry coming at 3.30am and leaving engine running till gone 4am waiting for staff , it was so hot in the room the window needed to be open , the fan did nothing as wasn’t powerful , the lorry comes at same time every morning , either provide ear plugs or can landlord tell them to switch engine off .
Everything lovely! Staying in the Lady Peckett room left us both feeling drunk due to the slanted nature of the building, but the atmosphere made up for that. Staff were very helpful and accomodating, really great stay. Location was perfect, right at the bottom of the shambles.
Nothing!
Staff go above and beyond
Location. Friendly BAR staff. Not management.
Too hot. Cramped stuffy. Window sis not open. Did not stay as it was horrible.
The room was superb and the actual pub full of history ,definitely worth a visit Looking forward to going back
Very central location, excellent food at a good price and a great local atmosphere. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Hate to even mention it because it's probably no fault of the pub but there was a smell of sewage in the bathroom on the morning, I put it down to being an old building and quite a hot day. It didn't bother us much but I feel it might bother others.
We loved the quirkyness of the building great to see the old character The breakfast was lovely
Loved it all
The room was equip with everything you could desire including water, biscuits and other little touches that made this a spectacular property.
Feels like you are actually in the 15th century
Ordered small traditional breakfasts. Had tea toast fruit juice. Freshly made, just enough. Golden Fleece couldn't be in a better location tbh. Hope to return.
Amazing pub, rooms & decor 10/10. Clean and spacious. Excellent for couples. Location is an absolute win. Dream place to stay!
Awesome location. Awesome property. Really nice people on staff. Great breakfast
we enjoyed the atmosphere of the hotel, but we thought the bar closed at 11pm. it stayed noisy past our 11 pm bedtime since we were tired from traveling.
Everything! Right in city center and across from The Shambles. Five ghosts haunt the hotel, but they seemed friendly! Our room made us feel like royalty!
Location
All good :)
Such a unique experience, very spooky fun stay
All good
Location, staff, breakfast
Room wasn’t ready till 4.15, expensive drinks
The location was great. Staff friendly. Live music in the pub. Decor was great in the room.
Nothing!
the old style of the rooms to match the old style of the building
the water smelled of eggs
The Golden Fleece is a gem of a place to stay. Steeped in history and with great staff and excellent rooms that take you back in time the moment you step into them as too does the pub itself. It's an experience that you should definitely try.
There was nothing I could fault. Would definitely stay there again for sure
Everything about this place was amazing, staff were fantastic, nothing is too much trouble, very comfortable room and the bed was so comfy, the breakfast again amazing, cater to all needs. Thank you for a great stay.
Nothing
The property itself
Dining on an evening table was in the middle of a noisy bustling rowdy pub not ideal for a meal
Very nice very old pub with beer garden good atmosphere and food smelt amazing, and beer garden
Had pipes that rattled so badly we could not sleep. Conversation was almost impossible. Also had rotten milk for our tea and coffee and a toliet seat that did not fit. I wrote to complain but no reply. Really disappointed for £250
The atmosphere was great and there was great service from the staff. York is a great place to visit.
Looooved the haunted house vibe, and especially loved the decor of the staircase leading up to the rooms.
Nothing comes to mind, though I suppose I felt that it was a little pricey.
Perfect positition in the centre of York. The staff were lovely, the breakfast was enormous, well cooked and delicious. The room certainly had atmosphere!
The low ceilings! I head butted the light fitting twice and shower head once!
Lovely hotel rooms and fantastic location.
The place was quirky food was excellent staff were brilliant
Nothing
The location was lovely staff was lovely. We had a great time honestly definitely would stay again. Especially to learn about the rich history of York.
Great rooms and great fun in the pub downstairs!
Staff very friendly and helpful room was very clean and comfortable food was good and a decent pint will be coming back
The atmosphere, it's like stepping back in time into a bygone era. The food was nice, drinks were reasonably priced. Good entertainment on each night. All the staff were approachable and friendly. Didn't encounter any problems.
Hotel rooms were quite expensive compared to many places. But I suppose it's a unique setting and the pub has a long history. Not many places has that unique vintage charm.
Quirky place to start stay right in the heart of York
Everything. Quirky, welcoming, historic pub. Bedroom was very atmospheric, beautifully decorated with quality fittings . Breakfast waitress Alex was warm and friendly. Pub was lively in the evening, the live band sounded great. A really top place to stay for a unique experience in York.
There wasn't anything to dislike.
Loved the history and the character of the building and the refurb of the rooms is stunning whilst keeping the charm of a historic haunted pub. The staff were so friendly and helpful and even made me a pack up veggie breakfast to have in the room as I had to work so couldn’t pop down. No ghostly activity although some of them pictures I took when waking up in the night have some strange misty orbs and anomalies on them.
Nothing to dislike.
Easy check in. Comfy beds. Clean and cosy room Great breakfast in the morning Friendly staff
No negatives..everything was perfect.
The staff, the spacious rooms, large ensuites, location, pub, decor. This place far exceeded our expectations. Would happily recommend to anyone who would like to immerse themselves in something ghostly.
nil
My room was gorgeous. Huge bathtub, massive room. Loved it
The Golden Fleece is walking distance to everything you want to see. Minutes from the Shambles and across the street from M&S . So if you have forgotten and need anything they have it. The pub itself is cute and cozy, the food is really yummy and they have live music every night. Breakfast is included and it's made fresh , so no buffet. The beds are really comfortable and the room itself has everything you need.
They do have old stairs and the floors are uneven. But this is clearly stated and the building is 500 years old so that is to be expected.
El lugar es increíble. Tiene todo lo necesario para alojarse cómodamente, tener todas las atracciones de York caminado. La habitación espectacular así como la atención que recibimos. El bar de la planta baja complementa todo lo anterior! De seguro volveremos!
Comfortable, spacious room, with a great view of the streets outside! Breakfast was delicious and staff were some of the kindest!
Nothing - it was wonderful!
Rooms very impressive, comfortable mattress, food was lovely, clean, staff were approachable and polite and location was great.
It's a small thing, the pillows weren't very comfy but the bed was very comfortable and had a great night's sleep.
The pictures do not do the room justice. Loved it, will be booking again.
Nothing.
Sunday roast: pub has great atmosphere, service was pleasant and prompt. Grading 4/5 . Meal well presented with beautiful Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes well cooked etc - heading for 4/5 BUT the beef - as the main act it did not measure up- had been presliced and kept warm. Tough and lacked taste. What a pity in a great setting!!
Fantastic ambiance and vibe... Mixed with heritage and ghostly stories!
Great location surprisingly quiet as room was on the front looking up hectic shambles
Great history and atmosphere.
Food in pub was poor and breakfast was average.
Slightly expensive but worth every penny. You will love the feeling of the old building and whatever might come with it. The stories are great and wandering around after hours raises the hairs on your neck! We enjoyed the music until close and being able to just go to bed in the pub is a fun experience.
Everything was fantastic
Everything the experience was incredible
Great location, spooky as promised. Great live music and lovely bar.
The full English on the first day was poor, greasy and cheap ingredients. The second day the staff made us eggs and bacon on toast and that was lovely .
Very relaxing atmosphere

Very atmospheric pub, looks tiny from outside but gets bigger. Great location at the south end of the Shambles. Popular, need to book. So quite loud. Great food. We had Sausage & Mash, the onion chutney was superb; and Hunters Chicken which was generously loaded with sides. Both were delicious and good value. Took a bit of time but fresh cooked and well worth the wait. Sadly they were out of the dessert I wanted, the tiramisu. Hence four not five stars! Would definitely visit again, highly recommended.
Loved the sloping room along with decor and furniture, it was like stepping back to olden times, although very clean and comfortable.
We visited when works were ongoing for new toilets, which meant breakfast wasn't available. Will have to try again.
Location was superb
Nothing
Amazing place to stay will definitely be looking to book another stay
(Stayed in minster room) The bathroom was spotless. Lovely view. Food was average.Staff were all really nice.
Step into rear bar was treacherous (an accident waiting to happen, needs clearer sign posting) Room was dusty and plants were dead. Considering price per night I feel that this should have been impeccably clean. Canopy was dusty too.
From the moment we dropped off our bags to checking out it tge service was exceptional
Nothing
The Location and the experience was great for a short stay in York. A fleeting 24 hrs felt fulfilled. Jack the barman was very good, he is a great host. In house entertainment proved the day wasn’t over when we got back to base.
The room was amazing the bed was really clean and comfy. Loved the decor and how it represented the era the building was from and its history
Slightly rubbery scrabbled eggs but the rest of the breakfast was lovely
Great location and very comfortable room!!
Pub was a bit dark.
Bedroom and bathroom were spacious.
Probably too dark for me but that’s the style of the property.
Such a nice old pub, rooms are lovely, Breakfast good.
Pillows need replacing too flat, Sunday dinner wasn't hot enough, one of our lamb shanks was cold,
Luxury and quirky absolutely loved the place and will definitely visit again
Nothing
Super cool hotel. Great staff
Booked the largest room which was at the very top of the building. Have to be reasonably fit to get up there. Picked this Hotel for the gost spotting but they must have been hiding. Over all good.
The decor was unique and lovely. The room was spacious. The facilities were good. Breakfast was lovely.
Renovations were being carried out which we had not been informed of and therefore we were woken up by banging and hammering at 7:20am on the Sunday morning. It was a lot of money for one night for it then to be spoilt with an unexpected wake up call.
Great location, staff very friendly, hotel very quirky.
Room was absolutely lovely, staff were very welcoming.
EVERYTHING!!!
