Location
Staff. Poor quality food. Obviously running it very cheap labour and quality food
Beautiful Hotel, and staff could not have been more helpful, offering to make us a sandwich because we needed to leave before breakfast. Outstanding service.
First world problem, but no draught ale in the bar, with so many great local breweries this was disappointing. We went to the pub instead of staying in the lovely hotel bar.
Gorgeous setting and lovely size room. Friendly reception staff
The breakfast was a bit plain and limited choice
Location and look of the hotel is beautiful
Rooms were very dirty. Mirror and tv smeared with grubby fingerprints. Shower screen seal covered in pink mould and grime. Bath very dirty. Dust and cobwebs all over ceiling, beams, behind doors, and bathroom ceiling fan. Glass table tops covered in fingerprints. Leatherette covering on headboard and armchairs worn off, torn and tattered. Bedroom carpet stained. Bedding, toilet and sink were the only things clean.
Staff miserable and rude .poor food breakfast of avocado and eggs was revolting.
Friendly staff and quicker service. Waited ages for breakfast order.
Location excellent

Breakfast Building needs refurbishing
Heritage and the room itself was fantastic The cleanliness of the room and facilities in the room were fabulous. The room service each day was perfect. The reception staff went out of their way to be lovely.
The afternoon tea was appalling. There was no dinner or lunch service breakfast was by far the worst I’ve ever had. The outside steps on the handrail to our room was filthy, covered in bird droppings and gravel - the noise of the night time was disturbing
The room was lovely and very spacious. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The location was great and lots to do around it.
We paid extra for the breakfast and it was a big let down for the hotel. 1st morning breakfast was burnt and missing items. 2nd morning asked for scrambled egg on toast and it came without the toast. When I asked where the toast was i was told to go make my own. Staff in the dinning area were a little rude and the wall next to our table was dirty.
The room was good, shower good and general cleanliness was good
The service was pretty dreadful, ended up having an un-necessary argument with the restaurant manager, when my wife checked in she was told no chance of eating in the hotel, fully booked and very short staffed, the upshot was we were flexible in time to eat, we ate at 6pm in the end when the restaurant was empty but the manager still felt he had to confirm the table was to be vacant by 7 which was no problem for us, if that conversation was had at the start the review would have been different but he was too upset they had no staff to be diplomatic, breakfast was a miserable affair, my wife was given the wrong breakfast but accepted it as we could not wait another 30 minutes, other gusets were complaining as well, only one member of staff seemed happy to be there but did not get her name, but she was the youngest member of staff so thank you to her, the rest should ask for the money back from their charm school traing because it obviously didn't work
Everything
Nothing
Room was lovely. Old historic building and room was very comfortable, good bed and bed linen.
Had an evening meal in the restaurant. Shambolic, faulty towers was mentioned between three other diners. Spoilt the experience and then charged for food we didn’t get.
Location
Room not cleaned thoroughly. Reception staff, on arrival, of limited assistance, unable to help with basic enquiries about hotel i.e. room service, carparking
Location
Food experience was very poor. I had a starter and my husband did not. The staff served my starter at the same time as my husband got his main course. After I had finished my starter I waited 20 minutes and then had to ask where my main course was. The menu was not as advertised on the website. The breakfast was also very poor. The hotel needs to look at the organisation of the kitchen and dining area.
Location for Blenheim and Woodstock town was fantastic.
The stairs … I appreciate the build is old but climbing all those stairs are hard.
Location and history
Tired
Situated in the beautiful town of Woodstock the location was perfect. The accommodation was to a high standard although the dining room seemed slightly tired and need of an update
Nothing
Room 16 was very cramp for the money, air con was very poor, bathroom looked tired, the toilet took at least three attempts to flush, we had a small courtyard outside of our window that had litter strewn everywhere. When we went to get breakfast on Saturday morning we were told that their would be a long wait as the hotel was short staffed, we went to Woodstock as we were attending a car show at Blenheim Palace, surely you would plan your staff rota accordingly knowing such a big yearly event was taking place. So we ended up getting breakfast at a local pub The Crown Inn, which was superb and was just what needed before a big day out. We did get a 40% refund, but still i have stayed in Holiday Inn's that were better value for money.
location
breakfast extremely poor and over priced
My booking was cancelled by the hotel with less than 24 hrs notice.
The hotel; it's position near Blenheim. Seperate seating area couch TV ect
Breakfast disappointing, unable to have dinner at the hotel table automatically reserved
Location great
Food was awful. Expensive
Great position and perfect for Blenheim Palave and Salon Privé
Definitely not a 4star hotel. Public areas and restaurant very dated, couldn’t even open windows in the room!! Young chap on reception not particularly welcoming and pretty abrupt. Restaurant was empty for a Saturday night (although Open Table suggested it was very busy between 7 and 7:30. The website suggests that “Our chefs have put together a stunning new Summer menu using the very best seasonal ingredients – a creative fusion of traditional and modern English cooking”, but the menu on offer wasn’t as per the website and was extremely limited, with a sneaky surcharge for a minute steak, which wasn’t a minute steak! Definitely not a “stunning” menu, more akin to a very limited menu at a pub attached to a Travel Lodge. On the plus side, despite the window issue on a very warm day, the room was very clean and comfortable, and the staff in the restaurant very friendly.
Upgraded room -charming
Food poor
Very historic property in great location
Filthy and dirty poor service and not even equal to an air b n b
Location, staff were very helpful, everywhere was very clean
The room we stayed in (49) was uncomfortably hot. No ventilation, 3 fans blasting when we got in the room. Windows that only opened a small amount however we did get moved and that room was a little better
Olde world charm. Very characterful.
Consistency of breakfast poor and service slow. Beverages given on arrival, so cold by the time breakfast is actually given you. Soft eggs one day, hard the next! Slices of bacon together, so outside done, inside middling!
Staffing poor in number and customer service. Waiting ages in the bar and restaurant as at times one member of staff covering both! Due to minimal staff cover, crockery and glasses left, so area looks untidy.
Good and convenient location at Woodstock and the Palace
Located in the heart of Woodstock with a good selection of local pubs available. Great reception staff - cheerful and helpful. Very reasonble bar prices.
Good evening meal but a larger choice would have been appreciated.
Beautiful location - historic building very picturesque and convenient location for the purpose of our visit.
Unclean in places - tiny window which we couldn’t open in heatwave conditions - no air con and just one small dirty and noisy fan - made it very uncomfortable and we were unable to sleep
Room & location excellent. Breakfast awful. Help yourself stuff like toast, jams, orange juice etc. Fine. Cooked breakfast overcooked, cold as was the tea & coffee. Not up to standard for a 4 star hotel.
Breakfast - see previous comment
Nothing to like
The hotel is awful in many, many ways! Be warned- Do not stay here! Lots of customers had complaints and wanted to speak to the manager, but management were nowhere to be found! I will never stay in a McDonald hotel again!
everything I have stayed at the bear twice before
Great location 😀 central and only a few mins walk to Blenheim Palace Comfortable bed 🛌 Room facilities adequate Dog friendly throughout 🐶 though charged £15 per dog, per night!!!
Limited menu - disappointing dinner 😞 breakfast just okay; limited bar We only booked a standard room to be fair but shower cubicle was a tight squeeze! Unable to fully open window so was warm and stuffy during the weekend of our stay.
Great location. Helpful and friendly staff
Location
Flooring in the room squeaked badly, and noise from the room below until late.
The location and the ambience.
Only that temperature controls in the room did not include air conditioning. I am from the US and so not used to accommodations without air conditioning. My room was on the first floor so leaving the windows open was a security consideration. The hotel had supplied a fan but this did not mitigate the heat enough for me to be comfortable while sleeping, unfortunately.
The location was excellent nice big room and bathroom friendly staff great parking room service
The room was nice but the cleaning wasn't up to four star there was a lot of dust on the headboard the heater the fan and also on top of the curtains Rail and one of the bedside tables dust was quite thick so have been there for some time the set menu in the restaurant could have add more choice of meals and we were not offered another menu but the food was adequate but the service was a bit slow we had to wait 25 minutes before we were offered a pudding but this could have been because the server was new to the job but the restaurant only had 12 people at the time but the server was very nervous but she done a good job and tried her best but was put under pressure for some other guests which they're all the best in the future and to take it deep breath and just do the job the best she could
Great location in Woodstock. Lovely beamed room and very quiet. Car charging was appreciated
Furnishings a little tired
we got upgraded and for that was super grateful !
Great location, friendly and professional reception staff. Room was clean and comfortable.
Breakfast was overpriced and overcooked. Really dissatisfied with the catering . For the price expected much more. The following day we found a local cafe with a lovely breakfast at half the price .
Very cosy we had rooms 32 and 33 they were beautiful
I wasn’t keen on when you walk in the carpet on the stairs and hallway needs replacing, the bar and restaurant were a bit dark they could be updated to the standard of the rooms.
Good location in lovely Woodstock. Staff on reception friendly.
Level of housekeeping is poor. Dirty toilet seat, air conditioning broken due to being clogged up with dust. Similarly the fans. The socket for the fridge was broken so the fridge wasn’t working. Considering what we paid for a suite, it just wasn’t good enough. Restaurant very poor - both in food quality and cleanliness. Such a shame as we have stayed here before and always enjoyed it. This should be a gem of a place but it seems to be in decline.

Tired, smelt unclean Very dated
This is a beautiful hotel, it isn’t luxury or boutique however does have it‘s own charm. The rooms are very comfortable we stayed in rooms 32 and 33 as a family. Very clean and beds really comfy. The breakfast as stated by others isn’t the best however the Buttery cafe a few doors down does an excellent all day breakfast. If they changed the carpet downstairs and on the stairs, updated the bar and restaurant area in keeping with the style of the era (not 80s) in my opinion would make a big difference. I didn’t see any ghosts luckily, I didn’t realise until I got back home it is one of the most haunted hotels in the UK!
De comfortabele bedden, het historische karakter, de locatie
Prijs voor ontbijt, hitte op de kamer (weinig ventilatie mogelijkheid)
Location was best thing about hotel …..staff were new and inexperienced. We booked 5 bedrooms for ourselves and friends. Our room was ok but our friends all had issues with their rooms ……hence we repaid them their cash for rooms as it was our suggestion to stay at The bear.
No experienced staff 15 minute wait at bar for drinks no lemonade no cider no blush wine basic items we wasn’t asking for cocktails or unknown drinks
We love staying at Bear Hotel. We’ve visited Woodstock many times and the Bear is always our go to. Added bonus is how dog friendly the hotel, and the village is.
I have no dislikes.
Good bed, good breakfast, good parking, nice staff.
No Walk in shower.
Unique history, well maintained and interesting. Lots of staff to attend to my needs and parking always available!
I enjoyed my stay immensely.
The room was ok the bed was comfortable. The water was hot. The location was brilliant. Convenient to have parking behind the hotel .
The bathroom was not particularly clean, we had to clean the bath before she got in. The outside areas were lacking and there was bird poo everywhere. The breakfast was not good. Bacon was burnt, the hash brown was dripping in fat. The mushrooms were inedible. I had scrambled eggs which didn’t turn up at the same time as my husbands bfast and we had to ask where it was. When it came the scrambled eggs were like rubber and grey. I could not eat it. Had we known how bad it would be we would have gone else where even though we had paid for it. One of the waitresses who appeared to be in charge, was far from customer focused. There were other people in the room also not happy with the food they were being served. Having to keep asking for coffee refills was not ideal and would have been better to have had a coffee pot per each table. There was only one choice of fruit juice and the continental bfast was lacking.
Location
Lack of drinks lack of experienced staff constant loud water running all night in 4 of 5 rooms booked.
Good central location with free parking. Pleasant double room. Breakfasts were good on the whole. Interesting, historic building.
Dinner menu far too restricted and food served of a poor standard. Had to send my dinner back one evening as lukewarm and inedible. Scruffy menus. Lack of availability of drinks in the bar e.g. no draught lager of any type available during my stay, unbelievable for a four star hotel. Staff, though friendly, obviously lacked thorough customer service training. Didn't provide napkins, didn't clear away extra place settings, didn't know what draught lager meant. Some of the public areas were grubby and scruffy, e.g. sticky tables in bar, chipped tables on the terrace, fire escapes that needed a good sweep. This hotel could be lovely with more attention to detail and proper!y trained staff.
Our room was very nice. Had a small window so we asked for a fan as it was a little stuffy. They couldn’t find one. Otherwise it was perfectly pleasant
See above
Nice location nice room nice staff food average
Restaurant needs to offer more choice and have what it advertises
Very close to Blenheim Palace
The rooms (in particular the bathroom) need a refurb, maybe using someone who knows how to countersink screws and use a sealant gun?
Excellent room and friendly staff. Despite bottle of Pimms No 1 on the bar, bar staff wouldn't serve me a Pimms cocktail ("Not on the till" they said). No al-a-carte menu or specials available for dinner in dining room on a Friday night. Just limited set 2 or 3 course menu printed on scruffy card - fish was battered fish 'n chips, steak was steak frites. No resemblance to promises on web site, nor to previous experience.
Good but with some reservations
Location
We booked a deluxe suite so had two TVs in the room which is important when travelling with children. On arrival we noticed that neither TV was working. When I informed the Reception, they were very helpful and looked to address the issues straight away. We were told that if they couldn't fix both TVs we would be moved. Only one TV was fixed and we weren't moved but it wasn't a huge issue for us as that was in the adults bedroom and we weren't really interested. Would have been nice to watch in the morning while we were getting ready but no big issue.
Breakfast staff were rude and disinterested. Breakfast food was terrible. Cooked meals were over done and dry with very little flavour. Continental selection was very limited. The choice of fruit was a plate of apples covered in fruit flies because they're left out over night. We had 4 mornings there. By the third morning I was dining alone and on the 4th day I couldn't face it so we went out for breakfast (annoying since I'd paid additional for this)
The older breakfast female server was very miserable and abrupt, but the other members of staff were very helpful and friendly.
Okay so here goes, location absolutely perfect in the heart of Woodstock, good parking facilities and a beautiful old building that could look simply stunning but im sorry to say it is now looking extremely tired and faded. The receptionist on arrival was lovely, very welcoming and helpful. Room was okay, yes it was clean but definitely needed a coat of paint in places. Towels lovely and clean as was the bedding. Room however was extremely hot with just an electric fan to keep it cool, this was much too noisy to use during the night and the room was unbearable. Two bottles of water left but no where to keep them cold. Iron/ironing board and safe in the room. The room was quietly located which was a bonus. The hotel sadly lacks any finishing touches, it feels unloved..i can imagine at one time it would have been worthy of 4 stars but sadly no more. The bar had no beers etc on tap, apparently none of them were working, it was a lifeless dismal excuse for a bar. The dining room was no better and if you decide to stay here avoid eating..there are some gorgeous little cafes etc nearby that would serve a delicious and appetising breakfast. Breakfast was a poor apology for a breakfast - it felt like the ingredients used were the cheapest they could get. The staff i feel don't want to be working here, no communication whatsoever..certainly no customer service. Such a shame..bring in the hotel inspector and please get this hotel up to the 4 star rating it deserves..a few tweaks here and there wouldnt go amiss..its gloomy, its sad. It could be glorious. Please also stop giving standard replies to these reviews, do something about them
Beautiful hotel. Really well looked after with very helpful staff. Top standards , that’s nice to see . Location and parking are excellent
Nothing to not like
This is not a 4* hotel. Room 52 was very shabby. Suffocatingly hot, located on the ground floor and we did not feel safe leaving the window open at night. To cap it all the towel rail came on at full blast in the middle of the night. The mattress was very soggy. The furnishings shabby. A very disappointing experience.
Location for Blenheim Palace was excellent, good parking.
Shabby room. Grubby, bedside light dud not working. The mattress had no support whatsoever. Fortunately we did not stay during a heatwave but the hotel was suffocatingly hot, one dusty fan was provided. It helped but not enough. It was a ground floor room, no 52, so it was not safe to leave the windows open over night. To make matters worse, the towel rail in the bathroom came on at full belt early in the morning. The staff said it's connected to the hot water system there is nothing they could do about it. When we complained on checking out, all the staff could do was say I'm very sorry about that. This is not good enough for a 4* hotel, the main thing you expect of a hotel is a decent night's sleep. You will npt get that at this hotel.
Great accommodation which had a living area and mezzanine bedroom. Very hot in the room despite several fans. It didn’t help that the bathroom towel rail was switched on and hot! Great location very central to Woodstock and a short walk from Blenheim Palace. Several issues let the hotel down. The staff working in the restaurant and bar weren’t particularly welcoming or friendly, however the Reception staff were polite and professional. No staff tending the bar and when we did get served, there was no lager on draft or lemonade. £24 for a bottle of Corona and vodka! Breakfast was poor. Full English Breakfast was dry with a small pot of dry baked beans. It appeared to have been precooked and kept warm. No fresh orange juice, pastries and little choice of cereals, served in a side room which we found ourselves without being advised of this by the staff. No choice of eggs with breakfast, just got what you were given! No hash browns, even though this was included in the description on the menu. Generally we felt the hotel lacked heart and soul, with no ambience in a central reception or bar area.
Great location near Blenheim Palace … nice bedrooms …..polite service… good food
BedRoom very hot and stuffy .. no fan .. not enough staff
Location is great.
We were greeted by staff who said the room wasn't ready to check into. We said we would wait outside and could they let us know when ready. We then watched over 4 other guests get checked in before us and we had to ask if we could be checked in. We tried to get a drink at the bar and were told there was no beer and that it should be in by next week. Our room was a good size but there was no AC and it was a very hot day. Our windows had signs on them saying not to open. I went down to reception to ask about the AC and two receptionists had very different answers. One said she'd check and the other said the hotel no longer had AC and that it was on the website. I advised we had not booked via the website and that it should have been made clear in our booking and or at check in. I said we had a small child and that the room was stifling and that we couldn't open the windows. A receptionist said that the windows had been sealed shut! I asked for the manager to call me as soon as he was in and I never heard from him. I will be writing a formal complaint into the hotel after one of the most uncomfortable nights my family has had in a long time.
Propre et confortable
Il y avait une bible et du sel dans le tiroir de la commode... (Chambre 16) Sacrée ambiance...
Very disappointing stay – poor facilities, service and breakfast Unfortunately, my recent stay was extremely disappointing and fell well below the standard I would expect from a hotel. The room had several issues. There was no air conditioning, the windows did not open properly, the expected mini fridge was missing, and the hair dryer was broken. The bathroom was also dirty and not up to an acceptable standard. The problems continued at the bar, where there was no lager available on tap and the bottles of Peroni were warm. Breakfast was particularly disappointing. The staff were rude and unhelpful, and I waited around 20 minutes for a coffee, which eventually arrived cold. There was no orange juice and no toast offered. When the food finally arrived, the brioche and sausages were burnt, while the one piece of toast I received was underdone. Overall, there were far too many issues during the stay, from the condition of the room and facilities to the customer service and quality of the breakfast. Unfortunately, I would not consider this hotel good value for money and would be reluctant to stay here again.
Excellent location for Blenheim Palace, plenty of parking. Friendly staff and extremely clean bedroom. Lovely breakfast, with plenty of choice. NO AIR CONDITIONING , despite phoning the day before to confirm there was! Plenty of fans provided though. We were worried about staying, after reading the very mixed reviews, but would come again (just not during a heat wave!)
The location and the property are beautiful
Unfortunately our room was incredibly hot. It remained at 32 degrees all night and we were unable to ventilate the room due to the windows being on restrictors. We only had 1 small fan between 3 and the hotel were unable to provide another
Excellent room, very good central location in a very attractive village. Pleasant courtyard area for drinks. Lots of parking to rear of the hotel
Nothing
Location was perfect. Old charm. Nice sheets
There were only towels for two when four of us were in the room. Breakfast was poor - selection of buffet was very limited, drinking water was empty and when I asked for it to be refilled it was full of lime scale, tables were sticky and one of the waitresses didn’t have good customer service. We also had to wait 30 minutes for our cooked food and it had been sat under a hot lamp for a long time.
The location was excellent with parking in the centre of Woodstock.
The price of breakfast . Also we wanted to use the bar but they had run out of lemonade and could only offer soda as a mixer and when my husband asked for the draught lager, it also had run out.
Lovely rooms
Room was very hot windows didn’t open
The location
Staff were rude, the rooms were small, beds are tiny. My 3rd stay and I doubt I’d go back. I got moved rooms because ours was not suitable and was downgraded with no compensation.
Location and staff.
No air conditioning so very hot room. Quality of the food was mediocre. Set menu. Ran out of beer, both on tap and in the fridge. Some lagers available. Breakfast scrambled egg was inedible.
A great location for Blenheim Palace and the town of Woodstock. The suite we had was really spacious and would have said excellent but for the lack of air-conditioning which on very hot days made the room almost unbearable, despite the hotel providing several fans. The staff were very friendly and the breakfasts were very good. The hotel in general needs a bit of T&C but we would certainly stay again outside of any heatwaves.
Old world charm
We stayed in a suite and it was lovely, lots of character but with a modern bathroom. Hotel was right in the centre of town and an easy walk to Blenheim palace. Lots of great places to eat and drink within walking distance.
The location was fantastic. The staff friendly & helpful. The room was clean & comfortable bed, with all facilities needed.
The hotel is a bit tired & could do with a freshen up. Windows etc. There was a skeleton staff especially in the evening who were trying to do everything. The breakfast was a disaster waited a long time for the breakfast & when arrived mine was burnt & I had eaten most of mine before my husband’s arrived. The only point for the room no breakfast tea but not a big disaster.
Lovely room easy parking excellent staff
Nothing
Location
Electrics kept tripping and no one cd fix them. We were not offered an alternative room. Only 1 towel for 2 people. Milk in the fridge was off. Breakfast buffet was not refilled, you had to ask for more brown bread, continental had 2 cheese slices, 2meat slices left. Yogurts/juices were left on the table and not sat on ice or cooled in any way and we were in29 degrees heat. Staff looked miserable over breakfast, appeared understaffed and inexperienced- waitress didn't know what earl grey tea was.
Great location
The windows in the bedroom were stuck making it unbearable hot.
Some hotels that have the shortcomings as described by many of the one star reviews can redeem themselves by the friendliness and efficiency of the staff. Not this hotel that has some of the most arrogant service personnel that we have encountered.
We had two room both needed a good clean. One had no TV that worked staff could not help as all the managers had gone home no one on site. One room had no kettle tea coffee biscuits nothing. This is the second time we had been at this hotel all good the first time, hence rebooking. Now give it a BIG BIG miss don’t say you were not told. “Good Luck”!!
The staff were very friendly. The room was lovely and clean. Had a good night sleep.
The breakfast took ages to come, and was cooked quite crispy , not what I expected to be. Plus the fruit had ran out, and bread.
The staff were friendly. The position. Which was right near Blenheim palace. Nice sized room with a bath in the ensuite. Parking. Always a plus Fresh milk available for your tea and coffee in the room and a mini fridge, iron and iron board in the room and a hairdryer. All good touches.
I had an issue with breakfast on Monday morning. I ordered an egg Benedict. When it finally turned up. The bagel was burnt and instead of ham. There were two bits of over cooked bacon and the poached egg was questionable. I was offered a substitute. But I declined. The receptionist was very good and deducted the cost of the breakfast from my bill. Saying that the breakfast on the Sunday was exceptional. I put it down to different staff maybe. I did mention to the receptionist there should be a lunchtime menu. Sandwiches ect. I feel they are missing out by just offering a dinner menu. Maybe something for them to think about. But overall a good stay. Other than the breakfast issue.
Location.
Rooms exceptionally hot.
Location. Little bit disappointed with menu but other than that very good
Restaurant
Lovely room, great location and good value.
Bar was a bit dated and dark.
Room was a good size. Bed comfortable. Strange mark on the quilt cover. Very hot so took cover off the quilt and turned the marked side on the outside. Bathroom excellent. Fans supplied. Location good for Woodstock. Overall the hotel could do with a bit of TLC. A bit tired.
The fire door in the room was missing something to break the glass in an emergency but I’m sure I would have found something like my elbow!
Found building looked a little tired, no water in fridge and it was a suite. Cooked breakfast not grest
Staff were very friendly
Breakfast was very poor. Orange juice was warm. No bread for toast no marmalade very few pastries scrambled eggs were aweful and we asked 3 times for one breakfast to arrive. Whole thing needs sorting out.
Great location close to the local pubs and cafes. Ideally situated for a visit to Blenheim Palace!
Our room was dated and our friend’s room was larger, brighter and had a working fridge.
Loads of character great size room
It was really run down and poorly decorated quality was really bad and lots of stains on curtains and cushions in the room even cut out holes on the chair bathroom grout was really bad and sealant all needed redoing
