Provider-sourced guest reviews.
The hotel is an impressive old building and the interior reflects that. The service was very good, staff helpful and pleasant. Very good breakfast.
The room was a little small and a bit dated. The sink in the bathroom did not drain but it was fixed very quickly when we reported it. For my sister and myself, 64 and 69 years respectively, it was a little way out of town (particularly for eating out in the evening).
Old world charm & elegance. Clean & comfortable, staff pleasant & courteous.

Great location for the conference centre
Mattress was a little too firm but that’s just our opinion
The whole experience beautiful hotel and perfectly located
The fact that the dining room always seemed really cold
Lots of character. Staff were extremely helpful.Restaurant was great and breakfast was great, too.
Windows don’t open and rooms were too warm
Lovely staff and location
Whilst I understand the hotel is old and need to keep the nostalgic feel it is in need of a refurb. The breakfast service wasn't great, had to ask the staff for bowls and to restock the food. It
Staggering distance to everything that I wanted to go in Harrogate - Bettys, Turkish Baths, Chinese restaurant at baths, Primark, Sports Direct. Staff were delightful..
Roadworks in Harrogate, meant round & round in circles before entry into hotel. Bathroom was tiny & lifts were pre-historic - but overall good stay.
Has character but still is smart and tidy. Food good. Breakfast was busy but it was all controlled and comfortable. Credit to the team
All the people were great but service in the bar was always slow as it always appeared busy. Everything else was very good
Very grand interior with lovely old fashioned furnishings etc in reception, lounge, breakfast room.
Bedroom was quite small and had no views.
Everything Hotel Location Facilities
Grumpy waitress at breast her face never cracked a smile
Fascino Old England
I was in room 162, a twin room near the lift as requested, as my mother has COPD and is 82. The setting of the hotel was lovely and it had parking. It was close to town, restaurants, and the pump museum. The staff were very pleasant. The room was a good size and clean. The breakfast room was lovely and the seats were comfortable. Some mornings, the sausages and eggs got a bit hard, but apart from that, it was adequate, and the croissants were lovely. I've stayed in several hotels in Harrogate over the last 25 years, and I would stay at the Old Swan again. I was pleased to see enough coat hangers, a hair dryer, an iron and an ironing board.
The food was not great. On the first night, we had fish and chips; it was awful. It was bland, pale and soggy; it seemed like a packet of fish, so we didn't stay for dinner again. The breakfast was fine. The room was a good size, but the bathroom could have been better; it was too small and had a tiny, cracked sink. We were at the front of the hotel, so I didn't like it at night. There was a net curtain because when you turned on the light, I'm sure people could see in. As you washed your face, the back of your calves touched the toilet bowl. I know it is an old building but there was only one lift.
Location, close to the town centre. Breakfast was lovely. Staff pleasant. On-site parking
No plug socket next to the bed for charging mobile. WiFi poor. Needed updating, requires a little TLC

Evening meal was good, and atmosphere was pleasant
The booking in procedure was adequate, could improve. We booked a times slot for our evening meal, but on arrival at the dining room, no record was shown. Car parking was limited and we were surprised that we had to pay.

our room had a very tiny bathroom, which was difficult to manoeuvre in, it would have been better to just have a shower and not a bath, the toilet is right on top of the bath and a wall you have to move around just to get into the bathroom. the mirror in the room was in the corner and no dresser under yet the dresser was at the bottom of the bed and nothing above it and very poor lighting {these small details matter when you are trying to do hair and makeup} and the TV was on the left hand side of the room so you had to twist to watch it from the bed
the sized of the bathroom, I don't expect a huge bathroom and it would not normally not bother me but this was boarding on being claustrophobic and I have never been in such a small bathroom
Staff. Breakfast, location.
We booked an Executive Room with a view, however the windows were covered with an opaque film. Water hammer when operating taps a night. Tiles loose ready to drop of the bathroom wall from height, could be a safety issue.
Staff great. Food good
Dining room felt like an old peoples home.
Locatie is uitstekend
Het onderhoudtsniveau
Pretty much everything. Spotlessly clean, comfortable spacious, lovely staff and convenient location. Lovely old fashioned atmosphere and appointments, but everything worked and contributed to a relaxing stay.
Nothing.
Location and heritage
Bedroom and bathroom decor in need of renovation.
Locality
Some areas seemed neglected
We were fortunate to be allocated Room 253 'Agatha' - a large en suite room which has quite some history. We really enjoyed the dinners in the Victorian splendour of the Wedgwood Room; we had excellent service throughout our stay too. An easy walk into the centre of the town.
No real downsides; it is a large Victorian hotel with lots of history and tradition. You get what you expect.
Room, breakfast, location and area
There was nothing we didn't like!
Really nice hotel, lovely big room, nice bathroom, breakfast was very good. Would definitely stay again and it was in a great location
Nothing to dislike
Location is perfect The accommodation is clean and comfortable
Bar prices are very steep £8.80 for 125ml Prosecco and £7.75 for a pint of beer It feels a little bit like we’re being ripped off
The dining room staff were excellent and always smiling
Near to town and a gorgeous building
Comfortable bed good breakfast
Check in a joke we book single and twin room but we're given a double for 2 friends. Took reception 50 minutes to sort out despite me having queried the room set up prior to arrival twice.
Every where was very clean and kept to a high standard downstairs. Bedroom although very clean was a bit dated and there was a hole in the Bath (room 335)
Overall a very good stay
Wonderful location , stunning hotel with so much history . Grand entrance, tastefully renovated, lots of cosy seating areas with fabulous sofas. Genteel atmosphere and competent and friendly staff.
Lovely Wedgewood dinning room. Just let down by pretty basic breakfast, no pastries no croissants or hash browns and poor quality bread .
The place was great. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Great location. I had a great time.
I liked everything.
Great Location, very friendly staff and the breakfast is excellent.
The single room I had on the 3rd had an odd layout and the bed cut the room in two. Room I had last year was much better. Otherwise it would have got a 10.
Staff very helpful and polite, the location was excellent.
Breakfast was only warm at best and the condition of the room could do with some care and attention, car parking charges a bit pricey.
It is a beautiful hotel in a perfect area to enjoy Harrogate. The bar and lounge area are a lovely area to have a drink at the end of the day .
The only thing was the bathroom could do with an extractor fan .
Great location and friendly welcoming staff. We liked being able to open the windows.
No complaints.
Breakfast was good and staff very friendly
Paying to park the car..other than that was a lovely stay
Very quiet and great location. Reception staff were really helpful
It’s an older property so less facilities which was as expected but great proximity to town so plenty to do outside the hotel. Breakfast was varied but dinner options could have been better for other dietary requirements ie vege
Good old fashioned service
Breakfast mediocre, hot items cold even at 7am. Many menu items missing from offer. Not worth the upgrade.
Location excellent for looking round Harrogate. Buffet breakfast good with plenty of option. Had really good nights sleep
Nothing- everything was up to expectations
Really nice old place that I'd be happy to return to.
Beautiful hotel
Old vintage feel which are difficult to maintain
Victorian character
It was a nice hotel with good location yo the town
My room was nice but 1st night got woke up about 4 times people coming in being very noisy There was a service charge on food and drinks that we didn't know about as was on the food menu in small writing but when ordering drinks u don't look at food menu
The hotel looked amazing with all of the traditional building and furnishings. The quality of breakfast and dinner was very good with lots of choice for both. Location was perfect for a night out in Harrogate.
A lack of Yorkshire ales in the bar!
Location
Room
Location ideal as a sto over on the way to the Lake District. Staff very friendly
Room outdated. Evening meal not as good as we would have liked for the money
Lovely hotel. Love the original features that have been kept although still with some modern elements. Brilliant location and we enjoyed our weekend stay very much. Breakfast was nice and buffet style which is convenient. Lots of staff available to see to your needs and very helpful.
Paying £12 a night parking is a disgrace
Very attentive helpful staff. Fabulous location. Lovely hotel
Bathroom needs upgrading
Antique, vintage and very clean. Staff very friendly
How clean and tidy the rooms are and comfortable
We enjoyed our stay for two nights nothing to complain. About
Great location within walking distance of many visitor attractions. Convenient breakfast. Many communal lounges for guest use. Garden seating areas. This is a big hotel built in the 19th century so has a lot of old world charm.
Given how long ago it was built, sound proofing was not a consideration back then
Perfect location and breakfast
The hotel is old fashioned and quaint
They were understaffed and the service was average at best. The executive suite was shabby with a rip in the curtain. There was a lot of noise from whatever was above our room
Breakfastcwas excellent. People helpful and friendly
Really big room. fantastic breakfast. 2 minute walk into Harrogate centre.
nothing
It is in a perfect location lots of character and history. Beautiful grounds, very relaxing.
Creaking floorboards
Location
The bathroom was small for my elderly parents, had to get into the bath to use the shower
The breakfast and evening dinner was excellent the celebration package offered by the hotel was 1st class and the location was perfect. My wife and I really enjoyed the experience. The history of the hotel was fascinating the connection with Agatha Christie intriguing it has plenty of character a very elegant place to stay.
Nothing could have been better a great hotel to stay at.
Features of an old hotel
Noise scaffolders , corridors noise , view poor , drainage poor .
The staff were friendly & welcoming
Todo impecable. El personal muy atento Las instalaciones preciosas Un lugar para darse un gusto y retrotraerse en el tiempo
Nada que observar
Room very tired, reception not the cleanest it could have been …
Fantastic breakfast.. with the best staff
Our room 179 was quite small and basin was blocked but did nt impact our stay
suite was very spacious and well-appointed. Given that the building is well over 100 years old, it was very comfortable. The breakfast arrangements couldn't be faulted. An excellent and wide choice of breakfast foods, and in particular a first-class buffet of cooked items. A lot of supposedly good hotels are let down by the hot buffet food but the Old Swan got it right.
It would have been nice if the dining room tables had table covers. Sorry; just a personal preference. This is a really good hotel.
Excellent position Good parking
Room was soooo hot Fan not really effective
The property was unique and with a good deal of history which gave it a special feel of bygone grandeur. It was fun to experience the once very opulent surroundings inside this dramatically located building over looking the town. The gardens were pretty and well kept.
Our bedroom was on the small side with a poor view. Whilst clean, it was not inviting due to it’s rather awkward arrangement of the furniture and it’s rather drab decor.
Location is ideal, few minutes walk town centre, room was comfortable, overlooking the lawn at the front of the hotel. Everything you need.
Shower was dangerously hot. Tried turning it to cold setting but didn't work. Basin was a bit too close to the toilet.
Room very good overlooking the front and very pleasant view. Breakfast was very good and no complaints. Would definitely go back again.
Everything went very smoothly and can’t think of anything we disliked.
Very comfy
Beautiful hotel, welcoming and helpful staff. Bottles of water and biscuits added to the tea and coffee making facilities daily in our room. Excellent variety of food choices at breakfast. Comfortable and clean.
The Old Swan is ideally situated with easy access to the town and the beautiful Valley Park. Very efficient and pleasant staff and the breakfast is exceptional. The room was well equipped and the bed very comfortable. All in all a very pleasant stay and will recommend to friends.
Nothing not to like.
Very friendly and helpful host. Lynn is a font of knowledge for all things Mull. As a life-long resident of the island, she knows best restaurants, hidden beaches, opening hours of various businesses…just amazing! Lots of space (2-room apartment) to spread out in. Beautiful view over the harbor.
We didn’t mind, but there is a steep hill to walk up from the main street along the harbor where most of the restaurants and shops are located.
Central location
Some noise from other guests
Frie
Lovely old hotel as usual. Brilliant staff.
Automatically added and hidden service charge on every transaction is unacceptable. We tip staff where applicable. Our party, who hasn't all realised about the charge ended up tipping into a pool for all staff, hardly fair when the good ones earned it, and a portion went to restaurant staff that we've NEVER used in all our years of staying. Wedding party wasn't kept seperate, wandering into the guest bar and adding to our queues. Also very disturbing until very late into the night.
The hotel is wonderful - we had rooms with a fab view over Harrogate.
The kitchen was chaotic- no butter for breakfast, running out of things etc. plus as had and fully paid for a double room on my own it always annoys me when a hotel is less than generous and they remove half the towels, half the pillows etc and only give you half the tea bags and biscuits!
Very helpful and pleasant staff. Food was very good and we loved the restaurant decor. Great location and easy walking distance to the town centre.
Sink plug leaked a lot. Some coat hooks would be helpful. Mattress felt a bit soft for us. WiFi in the room was none existent but worked fine in the public rooms - not so helpful for my teleconference.
It was a period building with lovely original features and fabulous grounds. Full of character
Beautiful setting, was lovely sitting outside having a drink in the sun. Love the history of the building and the Agatha Christie connection. The restaurant was fantastic, really enjoyed the food and the service was excellent
Breakfasts varied and good standard. Excellent bar area. Library useful meeting room.
No butter one morning. View from window disappointing.
Really lovely period property, clean, good location.
Room facilities very dated. Lack of sockets, had to boil the kettle on the floor next to bathroom door as lack of sockets. Room to hot, no air conditioning, used old rotating fan all night to keep the room cool. Reception staff very unfriendly and unhelpful.
We thoroughly enjoyed a four-day break in Harrogate at The Old Swan Hotel. To be sure, the hotel is very Victorian in style and substance, but this is all part of its charm. Without exception, the staff were very pleasant and friendly. We were fortunate to be allocated Room 253 'Agatha' - a large en suite room which has quite some history. We really enjoyed the dinners in the Victorian splendour of the Wedgwood Room; we had excellent service too.
Nice location
Terrible bedroom - one of worst bedrooms I’ve stayed in, anywhere in the world
The location
Nothing
Location staff and breakfast
Room not level leans in so all the furniture isn't level TV wardrobe bed etc
Perfect location and the breakfast was outstanding
Stayed in room 130 and lots of windows but no view at all
Great looking hotel with good atmosphere. Great location. Plenty of parking. Staff were all very friendly and helpful.
Nothing would definitely return
Very good pre booking experience. Great location so easy access to the city. The rooms while very spacious are very dated with creaky floor boards. The bed was fine but more attention to pillow comfort necessary as a hotel of this rating should provide alternatives to rock hard. Breakfast was self serve but some disappointing levels on the cooked selection particularly the eggs (been too long under the lights) and the quality of other things need looking, didn’t see anyone managing these areas. A nice touch would have been a selection of jams marmalades, honey etc apart from the little pots on the table of which there were only two. It was felt that the hotel was living on its past glory.
Beautiful location and close to town
The bathroom was tired and cramped
The room was clean and spacious and the bathroom excellent, however the room was hot even with the windows cracked open making it difficult to sleep. The breakfast was good, maybe a little cold depending on when you attended. The location is good and quiet with everything a short walk away. Taxis readily available if you need to go further.
The decor above the ground floor is a little tired and the bar serve "Doombar" as their only real cask ale which as a camera buff I would not serve to my worst enemy. We had to leave the hotel to find a decent pint of bitter!
We visited with friends for a couple of nights in August. The hotel and grounds are stunning and we had a lovely room on the third floor. The breakfast was very good and all the staff were pleasant in the restaurant, bar and reception areas. We had a slight issue with an evening meal, however the Management kindly resolved the matter on speaking with them, which we were happy with, thank you. We would stay here again but on a bed and breakfast basis. Would recommend.
It is really close to all amenities and in a quiet location.
Room 264 is very dated: curtains with holes through, bathroom door is sticking as soon as you take a shower, wall paint is pilling in places. We totally understand that it is classic hotel but it is desperately needs some TLC
Location.
Noisy events both nights....parking a rip off, used street parking, why so expensive???
