The room and the hotel was amazing.
Lack of parking but it wasn't too horrible.
Ours was only a brief stay but we have visited Bury st Edmunds before so we had a plan of what we wanted to see and do. Fortunately the weather was kind enough not to deter us and, together with your lovely hotel, we were wonderfully restored and hoping for a return when time and finances allow.
Nothing falls under this category apart from leaving on Tuesday!
Hotel beautiful and great location.
Room was a bit dark on ground floor.
Location, housekeeping, clean, breakfast.
The receptionist.
Loved location with parking available and close to all the town has to offer. Appreciated the complimentary bottled water and tea making station. Welcoming staff especially for breakfast (we had our evening meal elsewhere). The continental breakfast was plentiful and fresh. 11am checkout was ideal so didn't feel the need to rush breakfast.
The room (001) was on the ground floor at the back of the hotel overlooking a road and the car park. Had to keep the blinds closed for privacy from people walking past. Only a shower over the bath which is normally not a problem but it would have been better if there was a removable hand set and a shower curtain is always a pain! The tap in the basin was too near the edge so awkward to wash hands, etc. Would have liked the bedside lights to be a bit brighter for reading. Lastly, there was not a plug near the tea making station so had to use the plug by the desk for the kettle. If I decide to stay here again, I would request a room at the front of the hotel with a walk-in shower (if there are any).
Location. Beautiful hotel, valet parking.
The price. The hotel was great but overpriced for what you actually get.
The location and staff
The view was disappointing considering the price of the room, and no safe. Breakfast was expensive, but great service and location
Great atmosphere and staff are excellent. Room are clean and comfy
Bathroom needs refreshing as does some of the furniture
Fantastic hotel, staff very friendly and a perfect location near to the town which had some great shops, cafes and restaurants. Will definitely be returning.
Food and service excellent. Ate in the restaurant during the evening, also really good quality breakfast. Located centrally in a great town.
Very special and the subtle acknowledgment of our 40th Wedding Anniversary was superb
A beautiful property, in an excellent position
Everything! Location, decor, friendly staff, quiet-clean room.
Our first stay here, it was fabulous. Amazing, helpful staff from the moment we arrived. The concierge parked our car and took our luggage to the room. The room was ready so we checked in early. Lovely 'Spledid' room. We opted for air con which was very efficient. Cocktails before dinner, dinner in the Vaults and a delicious breakfast we're all five star. Attention to detail was evident. Only down side was that our shower tray was a bit slippery and quite a step down, we'll bring a non slip bath mat next time. If you're parking there, it's easiest to pull up in front of the hotel and tell reception you've arrived, they'll arrange to park it for you. We'll be back soon.
TOM SLEGG: APPALLING MANAGER We came with our grandparents to celebrate a birthday and tried to have a drink. It was busy, which we understood, but the service was extremely disappointing. As we were leaving, the manager, Tom Slegg, confronted us and asked why we were unhappy. We calmly explained that the service had been poor. His response was disgraceful, he took it personally and called our elderly grandfather a “knobhead.” What kind of manager speaks to an elderly customer like that? Completely arrogant, rude and unprofessional. We came to celebrate a birthday and instead left feeling shocked and disgusted. The poor service was one thing, but Tom Slegg’s attitude was something else entirely. And that Cheshire Cat smile followed us all the way down Angel Hill. We will never return.
Came in with our grandparents for a birthday drink. Busy night, fine, but the service was poor. When we mentioned this on our way out, the manager got defensive and called our elderly grandfather a “knobhead.” Absolutely disgraceful behaviour from someone in that position. Left feeling shocked and insulted. Won’t be returning.
43rd Wedding Anniversary meal - food absolutely excellent - staff wonderfully friendly and competent - special mention for young Noah plus Chris and Grace. Our first time - will be back.
An excellent experience as always. What a fantastic evening for the Wine Wars event, great service, great food and a hell of a laugh! Love you Tom.
We took my mother in law for aftercare and the hospital and food was amazing Max Wiseman (porter) and summer was really helpful.
Bury St Edmunds is beautiful town and I thought the hotel was equally as nice. Perfectly positioned in the heart of town. The service was exceptional, from checking in, the bar staff, the restaurant staff and the concierge. The cocktails were very nice and I particularly enjoyed the spicy margaritas.. The food in the restaurant was great. My only gripe ,being a vegetarian was that there wasn't as many options as I would have liked . But what I did have was very pleasant. Our room was clean, comfortable and had all the amenities you would expect . Parking was very easy too, leaving the car outside in the main square and dropping the keys to the concierge who move it if it needs to be moved. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable stay . I'm sure we will be back at somepoint. Thanks to all the smiling staff that made us feel very welcome.
Very good location & public areas . Drab small room . No bath , no fridge , no luggage rack & lack of plug sockets at bedside . Excellent waitress staff for coffee etc Wonderful bar staff Non attentive reception staff —too busy conversing among themselves . Help with parking my car away from main hotel but nobody available to help on departure . Overall poor value compared with other UK hotels of the same grade
We’re local to the hotel and love Bury as a classy town and nice feel. We love the Angel as a base. Rooms are always clean and well presented. The bar and restaurant are well appointed. A big plus is the onsite free parking but probably the biggest asset is the staff. This might seem an odd comment but they are all able to hold a conversation with you. They’re smiling, pleasant and professional and really put the icing on the cake. Room prices are tip top but in general a lovely experience
Had a lovely stay at The Angel Hotel and couldn’t recommend it more. The staff were genuinely friendly and always happy to help with anything, which made the whole experience feel really welcoming. You can tell they care about their guests and go the extra mile. The location is perfect—everything you need is nearby, making it super convenient whether you’re visiting for a short stay or a longer trip. Overall, a great place to stay with a warm atmosphere, helpful team, and an ideal location. Would definitely come back!
When I first saw The Angel Hotel, I was so relieved that it looked exactly like the pictures online! This was my first trip abroad and the beginning of my new life as a full-time solo traveler. My very first hotel in England was a wonderful start to this new chapter, and The Angel Hotel was absolutely perfect in every way. My room (not in the main hotel building) overlooked this quiet courtyard. It was peaceful and relaxing, with a wonderful comfy bed, soft, thick towels, delicious food, and excellent room service. This hotel was the perfect place to begin an unforgettable journey, and I couldn’t have asked for a better first experience in England.
Fantastic decor and a nice mix of old world and hipster decor. I had the early evening set menu with a cocktail. Excellent smoked salmon starter with lemon and dill mayonnaise. One of the best smoked salmons ever. The main course and dessert did not disappoint either as both were excellent. It’s a good place for a couples night out, but the tables are a bit close together. Also the weak or lack of air conditioning was a disappointment. However, the quality of the food and ambience made up for this. If not the set menu not such good value. I would say that you would pay double the price in London for food of the quality they provided. The Angel was recommended to me and it was a fantastic recommendation,
Spent just one night here. We on the whole enjoyed our stay, nice big room with air conditioning which was very welcome. Bathrooms need updating. Public areas are nicely done, had a few cocktails in the bar which I have to say were superb and from a comprehensive list. Our real disappointment was the reception staff, both on arrival and check out, there was no friendly interaction whatsoever, very robotic. It was not a very good first impression at all and likewise when we left, there was no effort to ask if we'd enjoyed our stay etc etc, really poor. Bar staff were friendly and also the guys at breakfast but The Angel really needs to improve their 'reception' staff.
Went for Sunday lunch Beautiful ambience Food amazing Staff lovely Had our wedding meal at this hotel We go back every June Great service
The Angel is brilliantly located in the centre of town and on the whole is a lovely place to stay. Some of the staff are incredible and couldn't do enough to help, however, some of the reception staff are bordering on blunt. For example, the gentleman working on Sunday morning couldn't manage a hello when we checked out, and simply said £80 to pay. Not great. Our room was lovely, however, the couple we were with had a pretty dated room that had definitely seen better days. Given the price point, there are a couple omissions that would've been good to see, a wardrobe would have been really useful so i could hang my dress up, equally, we would have appreciated maybe face cloths and robes for the bathroom. Lastly, rather randomly, the loo is incredibly low down and could be a challenge for some. Also, there are alot of little steps at this hotel and i think some form of signage would be beneficial. Overall, i would recommend but maybe worth confirming you have a renovated room in advance.
Booked for a family lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Enjoyed a drink in the bar whilst we gathered and then had a fantastic Sunday lunch in the restaurant. Great ambience with a high end whilst relaxed vibe, great service, lovely food and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Might just be my new Sunday lunch favourite spot!
Location and vibe was great
The rooms are super dated, paid the same as friends that was staying and our rooms were very different. Mine was stuck in the 1980s - could do with modernisation in the rooms.
Booked a table at the restaurant as part of my 50th birthday celebrations. Lovely setting in a beautiful town. Good ambience, delicious food and attentive staff. Worth the 30 min drive from where we were holidaying. Free parking out front after 6pm. Worth making a reservation. Feels quite a special location.
Been here many times, wonderful staff and the food is equally amazing...
We stayed two nights last weekend..we had a twin room wth very comfortable beds. The layout of the hotel is excellent with interesting and flexible areas too sit in. All the food was excellent and all the staff welcoming, friendly and efficient. Especially as our car had broken down and everyone helped with parking and engaging with the RAC and a taxi to our next destination. Thank you all.
Had coffee and cocktails in the lounge. All excellent. The Angel remains the only quality place to visit in BSE. Not cheap but worth it.
The Hotel is situated in the centre of Bury St Edmunds, a fantastic location, and surprisingly peaceful. Our room was very nice: clean, comfortable, and with a shower that delivered outstanding pressure. The shower curtain was a little bold in its design choices, but it added character! The reason this is a 4-star rather than 5-star review comes down entirely to the parking situation. On arrival, we were asked to hand in our keys so the car could be moved if needed — it never was. The in-room information book gave no clear guidance either: it vaguely mentioned that parking charges "may apply at some point," with no indication of when, how much, or under what circumstances. When we checked with reception the evening before checkout, the response was muddled — first something about a ticket being placed on our car, then a clarification that it would be a parking permit. The full picture only became clear at checkout: the 11am checkout meant the parking permit placed on our car was valid until... 11:01. When I queried this I was told a complimentary slip left in our car should have prevented any issue, but that mix-ups had been known to happen before. Better communication and staff training around this process is really needed. On a positive note, Rihanna in the bar was warm and genuinely helpful — a real asset. The breakfast team, though seemingly running on a very generous amount of caffeine, were cheerful and pleasant throughout
Extremely handy for the whole town. Really good to have a nice table and two chairs in the room as we have a game we like to play.
All great
To celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary we visited The Angel for lunch. We had not booked but welcomed and seated to our choice. We were served by Desire whom catered to our every need. The service and food and drink was excellent and we will be back.
My girlfriend surprised me with a stay at The Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds for my birthday, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. From the moment we arrived, everything felt special. The welcome was warm and genuine, and that level of care never dropped throughout our stay. Every member of staff we encountered was kind, attentive, and seemed to genuinely enjoy making our visit memorable. The room itself was beautiful—comfortable, well-presented, and full of character. It struck that perfect balance between luxury and homeliness, making it easy to relax and enjoy the occasion. Dinner in the restaurant was absolutely flawless. The food was exceptional, with every dish cooked to perfection and presented beautifully. The service matched the quality of the food—attentive without being intrusive, and always delivered with a smile. It really felt like a special birthday meal. Breakfast the following morning was just as impressive. A great selection, perfectly prepared, and again served by staff who couldn’t do enough for us. It was the perfect way to round off the stay. From start to finish, everything about our visit was spot on. It’s clear that a lot of care goes into every detail, and it made the whole experience feel effortless and truly enjoyable. I’m incredibly grateful to my girlfriend for such a thoughtful gift—and to the team at the hotel for making it so memorable. We’ll definitely be back.
Imposing historic ivy-covered hotel smack in the centre of town. We had a spacious and pleasant bedroom with a good view of the Abbey gatehouse and gardens. There is limited parking in the public car park in front of hotel. The hotel reception area was very busy and noisy. The check in process was a bit slow.
We had such a wonderful stay at the Angel Hotel and couldn’t recommend it more highly! From the moment we arrived, the porters looked after our car with care and waitresses made us feel so welcome — nothing was too much trouble, and they truly went above and beyond for our family. The housekeeping team kept everything absolutely spotless, with incredible attention to detail that really made a difference. It’s clear the whole team takes great pride in what they do. We also treated ourselves to afternoon tea, which was fantastic, and enjoyed delicious fish and chips the next day both were top quality! If you’re looking for a hotel with outstanding service, warm hospitality, and a relaxing atmosphere, this is the place to stay. We’ll definitely be coming back!
Went for lunch and had the Fish and Sips. Really nice boutique hotel on the square opposite the cathedral. Food really good, staff friendly, good value for money and nice atmosphere
Very disappointing we were served the wrong afternoon tea despite me checking the sandwiches were dry they said thanks for letting them know and that was it no offer of goodwill I asked and was ignored do not recommend
As mentioned a number of times on TA, noise & the quality of some bedrooms is a real problem especially at £200+ per night. We viewed our fellow guest bedrooms and some had clearly been updated however ours was sadly in need of renovation. Facing a road, the room had one window containing two large panels of 3mm glass (probably fitted in the 1970's) which could not be fully closed & was covered in condensation when we entered. The noise from passing cars, people & motorbikes throughout the night made sleeping near impossible. ISS
We have just returned from a stay at The Angel Hotel and we were there for DB&B celebrating our wedding anniversary. What a wonderful stay we had. Room was beautiful, copper bath just divine and food incredible. Lovely town yo browse around. Thoroughly recommend 👌👏
Typing this at 715am on a Saturday morning, woken at 6.45 by the very intrusive road noise. Room 118: one of their best rooms, has 3 large sash windows which do nothing. Don't stay in this room. The restaurant and bars were great, the hotel has a great vibe. But, it is seriously let down as the quality of sleep is poor. We have stayed here many times, the last was dreadful for the same reason (disruptive room noise) and were upgraded to this room by way of an apology, not good enough. So, we won't be back us and the Angel are now done!
This is a lovely historic building in the heart of Bury. Staff are very professional and helpful. Rooms are all to a high standard. I had a very superior room, huge, free standing bath, writing desk, arm chairs and spacious shower / toilet room. Bathrobes are provided and lovely fancy mugs for tea plus border biscuits. Very comfortable but be aware there are lots of flights of steps of various sizes and rooms at the front can be noisy from traffic. The restaurant was also extremely noisy, I ate in the bar area instead. Food is rather "cheffy", very gourmet. Great wine selection. Breakfast has to be ordered rather than a buffet and portions are very generous.
A lovely looking setting for Afternoon Tea, but actually the chairs were too low compared to the table. The food was good quality, and some of the hot savouries, especially the lamb, were superb. There were 3 small sandwiches per person, and completely contrary to my expectations they were made with thick sliced bread. Sandwiches traditionally are made with thinly sliced bread. The fillings were ham, smoked salmon, and a fairly slimy egg mayo. OK, but apart from the salmon, nothing special. The scones were good, and whilst I would have preferred to have individual portions of jam and cream there was plenty between us. There was a great choice of tea, and some coffee. The whole atmosphere was ‘off’. Instead of a relaxing environment, often with unobtrusive music, it was loud, busy with an almost constant stream of people passing by, and another customer had very strongly smelling fish and chips. The reason I have not given a lower score is solely due to our waiter. When I eventually could stand the constant motion around me no more I complained to him. He immediately found us another table in a quiet corner, transferred everything over, and even brought us fresh tea. We ended up having the relaxing time we had hoped for from the outset. I wish I had asked his name.
The hotel itself is lovely and a great location. Parking is very near so excellent for not so mobile people. This is my 3rd time eating there and on other occasions it’s been ok but today was disappointing. I had steak and chips. Whilst the steak was lovely somehow the mushroom was burnt and the chips had obviously been warmed and cooked again. They were black, dry crisp and hollow. Very poor when you serve food at quite high prices.
We had the Valentine's package. Overnight stay, dinner in the vaults, live music, breakfast in the morning. The room was lovely. I've stayed in a lot of hotel rooms lately and this was probably the best overall. There is usually something that you can fault or feel could be changed, but this was literally faultless. The dining experience was perfect. A set menu is always a bit scary but the food was amazing. The breakfast was great and the service throughout the whole experience was amazing. Points of note just as feedback. The booking material had two different check out times. One said 11 and one said late checkout up until 12. There was mention in the booking of a complimentary cocktail on arrival. This was not mentioned to us when we arrived and so I didn't bother to pursue it. I didn't need a cocktail ( although I would have drunk it 😂) so it wasn't an issue, just something to maybe clarify for the future?
My partner and I recently visited The Angle to enquire about hosting our afternoon post-wedding meal there. We were warmly welcomed and shown around by a younger member of staff who was enthusiastic, professional, and extremely helpful. We were both very impressed—so much so that we decided to proceed with a booking. Unfortunately, once we were handed over to the manager, the experience deteriorated significantly. Her manner was rude, abrupt, and unprofessional. Despite this, we chose to continue with the booking and paid a substantial deposit. Only after the deposit had been taken were we informed that we would be restricted to a reduced menu. The menu presented to us was not what had originally attracted us to the venue, nor what had been available at the time of our visit. When we raised our concerns, the manager remained dismissive and inflexible, offering little in the way of explanation or resolution. She eventually offered a refund in a curt and disengaged manner. Two weeks later, we are still waiting for that refund. What began as a very positive and promising experience has been overshadowed by unprofessional conduct and poor customer service at management level. It is deeply disappointing that what should have been an exciting and special arrangement for our wedding has been handled in such a discourteous and unsatisfactory way.
A wonderful evening…..everything from checking in, drinks, food, atmosphere, prices, top notch!!!! Exceptional service
We have been to the Angel before, it is convenient for concerts at the Apex theatre. We stayed in an Ivy room, which has been nicely redecorated since our last stay. We decided to eat out as the menu seemed to be pretty much unchanged and i can get fish and chips etc anywhere. We did have 2 large glasses of Chardonnay before our theatre concert, £28…….was very average at best. For those wanting a quiet hotel, the Angel both times has been very busy and can be noisy. For us it is very convenient, nice staff, excellent breakfast. We have booked for October.
Overall, we had a lovely stay at The Angel. Our room was beautiful — we stayed in Room 118 and absolutely loved the freestanding bath. Every staff member we encountered, from check-in to the bar, was friendly, welcoming, and very helpful. There were just two negatives for us. Unfortunately, the noise overnight was quite disruptive. From around 11:30pm until 4am we could hear loud bangs, people shouting or singing (possibly intoxicated), and what sounded like early-morning deliveries. For a room costing £400+ for one night, this was disappointing and made for a less restful sleep. Breakfast was delicious and well cooked, but the portion size felt quite small for the price — one sausage, one egg, and no beans — which looked a little underwhelming, despite tasting lovely. Overall, we would return, but would hope for a quieter room next time.
A friend recommended the early supper menu at the Angle Hotel so we booked a table. First in the restaurant and seated at a table next to a window 😀 Good service./food and surroundings within a fixed price 💫 Just one suggestion ..the desert could be better. Thank you
I don't normally do reviews for afternoon tea, but as this one was £70 per couple, I did want to say that it was a tad disappointing. The setting is perfect, cosy setting with a fire in the grate, and comfortable seating. The ambience is what we came for and we were not disappointed. The food was okay, but there was nothing that impressed us enough to want to return. The 12.5 percent service charge, which was added without the option to decline, was excessive. A lovely day out, but at the same time disappointing.
A lovely setting and excellent staff We enjoyed our meal but wished we had been warned there was a very large noisy party of diners there at the same time so we could not chat easily and the service was slow . It was a a special evening out to celebrate some good news do we could have come another night
Lovely hotel. Immaculately clean room. Would have preference a walk in shower. Food great.
Excellent afternoon tea, really great service. Friendly staff , quick and attentive. Unlimited tea or coffee, smoked salmon sandwich, ham and mustard sandwich and egg sandwich. 4 scones, 2 fruit and 2 plain. Plenty of clotted cream and jam. Oh then mini cakes, don't worry you can ask for a box to take whatever is leftover, away. Great experience, I would recommend and go back.
We’ve eaten here several times and the staff are always extremely attentive, lovely decor and a great atmosphere. Food is delicious but the menu is very meat heavy. There is 1 vegetarian option and every time we’ve been it has been some type of fancy vegetable. No protein, no imagination. The fish has always been amazing but again one choice, in addition to the cod and chips. The table next to us were vegetarians and had a couple of starters each and I heard them debating walking out to find somewhere else to eat. If you’re a meat eater and appreciate excellent service, I would highly recommend.
My husband booked afternoon tea for my birthday with our little boy today. The staff were so lovely and amazing even though our little one running around causing mayhem. I apologise to anyone who was trying to relax when we were there. Went to baby changing room and fresh white towels laid across changing table so lovely. The extra touches made it so special, lovely card, delicious brownie saying happy birthday. I have had a lot of afternoon teas, even at the Ritz and this most delicious I have had. Thank you for your non judgmental staff, who smiled and was so accommodating, couldn’t do enough made my birthday a special one. Will definitely be back x
We had the most amazing relaxing weekend here for our birthdays, from the minute we walked into the hotel the staff were welcoming. The room was so lovely, the bed was so comfortable and the bath and shower were lovely, it was made extra special with lovely birthday cards on the bed. We had dinner in the restaurant there and wow it was perfect with a lovely bottle of wine, we were looked after very well with a lovely dessert saying happy birthday. Staff were fantastic. We had a drink in the lovely bar after. Breakfast was really delicious too. This was one of my favorite weekends away in this lovely hotel. We will definitely return- Thankyou x
My husband booked a one night dinner, bed & breakfast stay at The Angel Hotel, staying in a signature room. Initial impressions of it all being rather hectic settled down once guests having tea had departed. The room was frankly strange - and rather dated. The wall opposite the street facing windows just had a glosssy red mirror and a couple of black hands poking out of the wall, against a background of patterned wallpaper. It felt as if it had been redecorated on a limited budget without any attention being given to making it a room one would to be in. The bathroom was bizarre: a vast space, with a massive copper rolltop bath in the centre, and the toilet and basin at the side, with nowhere apart from some rickety wooden shelves to put toiletries. On a positive note, the hotel must have an incredibly powerful boiler lurking in the basement, as the bath filled up in seconds and the shower almost flooded the room with a tiny turn of the tap. Again, it just wasn't a room one would want to spend time in - although there would have been plenty of space for a party. Moving on to the dinner part of our experience, I'm pleased to say that the kitchen is as good as ever, and also coped well with my gluten free dietary requirement. However, the restaurant is expensive, and one should expect to pay £100 per person, inclusive of wine. Finally, we'd like to offer a shout-out to the hotel staff, particularly those running the restaurant so efficiently and with friendly smiles.
Gor my wife and I’s travels we have visited many hotels in many countries and had many meals! My wife said that her sea bass meal was the best she had ever had. The staff were lovely, the surroundings a delight and it’s history, overlooking the abbey, great. It is the kind of hotel that you book and on arrival are very happy with your choice

My car was damaged in their control - raised it with them and no one ever called back…
The Angel Hotel was chosen down to its known and sound reputation to meet our hope for a very special 80th birthday gift, but i am afraid our hopes were not met. The kettle in the room was faulty, needed pressure applied to switch until boiling water had been reached. While the leather settee looked sumptuous, it was not suitable for the two guests as they both have accessibility issues and was a struggle to leave the settee. On making the booking i explained as clearly as i could the guests9my parents had mobility issues and the room needed to be accessible. Access to the room required two flights of stairs which was exactly what we wanted to avoid. The door to the shower was faulty and leaked, it seemed a "fix" had been attempted but still leaked. This was reported to hotel staff during the visit. The underfloor heating could not be regulated or adjusted. In summary we are disappointed and our hope of gifting a wonderful stay fell sadly short. We did feedback these points to the Hotel, despite acknowledgement of receipt of our email we did not receive any detailed response after 12 days which triggered this review.
Location, valet parking and excellent service.
Room was a bit dated but excellent value for money
This is a lovely hotel, a mix of modern & historic. Our room was warm, with a massive comfortable bed and a posh bathroom. Service from the valet parking, through check in and for all the meals & drinks was exemplary. Food was delicious & plentiful, drinks were excellent from local ales to fancy cocktails. Couldn't fault it really. There are bargain prices available too if you are lucky with your dates!
We had a lovely lunch in the bar area. Service was lovely , great ambiance and friendly attentive staff . Also we my friend had a wonderful cocktail.
We went to the Angel for a birthday lunch, and we were bowled over by the level of service, the food, and attention to detail from all the staff. Five in our party including one vegetarian, coats were hung up for those that wanted it, water poured for all of us and further drinks were ordered in a relaxed manner. The food was wonderful! I loved the Pickwick Pie! Others had Haddock and Chips and there was a roasted Cauliflower too. All of the staff were excellent, and one day we'll return when we are in the area.
After a rather chaotic check-in (not the fault of the Hotel), the rest of the stay was faultless. Comfortable room with a view of the Cathedral, very comfortable bed. Location ideal for exploring the town. Dinner was very good, breakfast even better - probably the best Eggs Benedict I have ever had. Highly recommended
The staff were all really friendly and welcoming, the food and drink was great, rooms well appointed.
Bed was really firm, not an issue if you like that sort of thing.
Location and upmarket
Lack of attention to detail with accommodation. Maintenance and freshening up of rooms is suggested. No USB points, mould in bathroom tile grouting, sloppy painting of walls around curtain holdback hooks, stain on the lift floor carpet etc.
Excellent service and choices at breakfast. When we arrived at the hotel and looking for the car park, we were greeted by Steve, who took care of our car and he escorted us to the reception. We stayed at this hotel before, this time we enjoyed it more. The room was clean, cozy with good amenities. The staff at breakfast were very attentive and the food was good.
A wonderful afternoon tea in the restaurant of this historic hotel. The food was amazing and my friend and I shared it as it was very large! Our waitress, Summer, was so attentive to our needs and was very efficient and chatty. I would certainly recommend it.
Stayed once before but this time found it to be tired (mainly upstairs/room) and well overpriced for what we experienced. Lovely welcome though from charming Ruth on the front desk. I had requested a light bright room, had booked one of the lower/mid category rooms so was delighted that she gave us room 124 which looks out on the front of the hotel. Happy with the size and facilities (comfy chairs, large cups for coffee/tea) but, it feels tired/old with a mish-mash of furniture in particular a plastic chair at the desk!!! Basic bathroom no style (good shower though), no shelf to put anything on like a washbag. Flooring and carpet felt and looked very cheap in need of a serious upgrade. Valet parking so easy with car.
Took our friends out last night for a meal and had a wonderful evening with great food, and wonderful staff that were very helpful
Central location Room was comfortable and clean, a bit quirky! We had Sunday lunch, it was amazing! Staff we helpful
We waited 25 minutes to get a drink in the bar
Amazing stay at this beautiful hotel! Living in a nearby town, we often visit Bury St Edmund’s as so many lovely shops and restaurants but wanted to stay the night and enjoy a meal in the restaurant. We were given an incredible room with views of the Abbey, a bronze bath in the bedroom and huge bathroom. We love the decor of the whole hotel. Cosy, classic and stylish. The staff are all so friendly and the meal in the restaurant in the evening was superb! The food was really special and the service very good. Loved the cocktails too. The manager Tom is fantastic, so full of energy and ensuring we had a great stay. We will definitely be back, severally to try one of their supper clubs Supper club evenings soon.
Excellent well cooked and present.Staff very attentive and helpful. ⁷
What a great hotel , such a great vibe all round , hotel was packed . Room was spacious and clean and they even made the effort keeping our dogs happy with treats and toys Will visit again for sure.
Location very good
Terribly overpriced - the shower tiles were mouldy
Tom was exceptional!!! We arrived to have a drink to be told they were full!!!! Tom appeared and whisked us away to a charming table in the drawing room. The staff are incredibly attentive… even the point a photo was being taken and one of your staff popped up offering the get a photo with us all in … incredible… such a rare thing such brilliant service well done The Angel and Tom
Lunch on a quiet Tuesday. Sat in the lounge area. Starters arrived and unbelievably bland. Took ages to get some salt and pepper , which both arrived totally empty. Staff disappeared so quickly and didn’t return I had to go and find someone before we had cold food. Shared main course arrived and we asked for another hot plate , wait wait wait etc. eventually someone appeared and we then asked again. It duly arrived. Overall , bland food and quite frankly slack and poor service. Need to do much better if this is the standard when it’s quiet.
Staff were absolutely brilliant. We a left a watch in the room. Staff located and said no problem to send it on. They parked our car for us in a secure location. They were friendly and helpful. Wonderful place to stay. We will be back !
There is no Spa but I can’t really complain about that.
Prettier in Person! My first thought when I saw The Angel Hotel was no way! I couldn’t believe the ivy and petunias were prettier than the pictures I had seen online. The contrast of the ivy and vibrant petunias was breathtaking. The best surprise was discovering the ivy and petunias were real and not fake!
Booked for the early evening set menu. Disappointing menu options for vegetarian. Cauliflower soup for starter and cauliflower steak for main. Chef - please can you find some better options. No one wants cauliflower for starter and cauliflower for main course.
A confused hotel which we found rather disappointing. The room itself was large but was strangely decorated and was too hot. The bed was a four poster but was incredibly small given the size of the room. The decor in the room was rather poor - certainly not luxurious. It had the feel of interior design for a large and impersonal chain. The corridors to the room were in a poor state of repair. Breakfast was fine but again had the impression that we were in a large chain. Parking the car was ridiculous. Surely it would be easier to tell guests to park in the large car park at the front rather than squeezing down an alleyway. Finally the price of our bed and breakfast was simply extortionate, certainly bearing in mind the overall mediocrity of the hotel. Finally, the price for what we received was extortionate. Ridiculously expensive
The Angel aspires to be an upmarket, high grade hotel and it succeeds. Perfectly placed in the centre of Bury Edmunds its inside matches its front facade. It's an old facility but well maintained and you get what you pay for. Parking might appear to be an issue except the guys on the reception desk do an amazing job switching vehicles around to ensure everyone is accommodated. Room was lovely, but old fashioned which means the modern day usb ports are lacking but the rest is fine. Breakfast and evening food in the restaurant was quality however you may need a mortgage if you fancy a few glasses of wine. Finally the staff - totally proficient, professional and smartly attired. Absolutely first class throughout, they looked and acted the part - the hotel has recruited and trained well. Our thanks to the first person we met when we arrived, Ruth on reception. She couldn't do enough to mark our card and help us plan our break. She seemed to be there all the time and when we left still had a big smile for us. Appreciated. Btw Bury St Edmunds is such a lovely place - so glad we visited
Craving fish and chips so booked the Angel for lunch. Didn’t disappoint, great lunch, good value for money. One thing you always have to consider and be aware of when dining at lunchtime is the noise levels and the baby factor. Good customer service, nice, attentive staff, young, inexperienced but absolutely fine, no fuss, no bother, just those noise levels.
We visit the Angel as a family of 6 adults to celebrate a 60th birthday, the service and food were absolutely amazing. Also awesome cocktails. Highly recommend a visit.
We went for afternoon tea and were very disappointed. The choice of two sandwiches ham with no mustard and egg and cress, half a scotch egg a piece of sausage roll and something described as Welsh rarebit which was dreadful. One fruit and one buttermilk scone with cream and jam. I think it would have been better if they had substituted the buttermilk for a cheese scone. The cakes were very non descript. The coffee was good and you could have as many refills as you wanted. The staff were very nice.
I have stayed at this hotel several times and will continue to return, as the experience is consistently 5-star. From the reservation team to the concierge, reception staff, and waitresses, the service is always exceptional. Every room I have stayed in has been beautifully presented, with comfortable beds that guarantee a good night’s sleep. The breakfast and Sunday roast are both outstanding and never disappoint. This hotel truly captures the charm of Bury St Edmunds and provides the perfect place to stay. I couldn’t recommend it more highly.
Welcoming and friendly. Here for our sons wedding. Excellent food, with great attentive service, and staff. We had a perfect day. Thanks to everyone
I booked this hotel with an hours notice on the phone to a lovely lady who made a note of my requirements and explained about the parking at the hotel . When we arrived we drove through the arch as directed and our car was taken to the car park behind . The reception staff gave us a lovely welcome and our room was ready for 1.30 . A beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean room and the back of the hotel as we had requested a quiet room (215) . The bathroom was furnished with a bath and a power shower and the toiletries smelt divine … I’m try to source these for home ! Excellent quality bedding ensure to a wonderful nights sleep . At Breakfast then next morning we were again warmly greeted and shown to a table . We ordered the eggs Benedict and the full Suffolk and the quality of the local produce was noticeable , high quality and tasty . Well done we had a fantastic stay and will be back .
I had originally planned an afternoon tea at another local hotel but then read the reviews and someone mentioned The Angel Hotel , it did have some mixed reviews especially for the afternoon tea, so I thought fingers crossed. Oh my goodness, I couldn't have been more delighted with the lovely surroundings, smiley staff, nice and attentive and the tea itself was really delicious, I think there were a couple of the sweet items that could do with a bit of a tweak ( style over substance) but the savoury items were exceptional. Scones were delicious. My little mum whose nearly 90 and has been taken to a lot of afternoon teas by me said she thought it was one of the best - so praise indeed. I would recommend as really enjoyed this .
Waitresses need to learn more graciousness, the one who showed us to our table had no customer finesse at all and appeared to begrudge our visit!! beef chewy and tough, all vegetables hard. I have visited many times in the week and service and food much much better than today
Overall the hotel is beautiful, staff very friendly, the decor very nice. Bedroom very nice and also very clean. Just two negative things, first I paid the hire price 490 for a room with a bath in the bedroom and I did not get one of them rooms. Secondly during breakfast looking around when everyone was ordering a English muffin breakfast everybody was getting two on their plate with two poached eggs etc. and when my partners came out it only had one muffin one poached egg on the plate. But when we did mention it to one of the staff they did bring out another muffin but it was plaine without the extra egg etc.
We just dropped into the bar for sandwiches and were glad we did. The prawn sandwich could not possibly have held any more prawns and the coffee was delicious. Service was excellent. The decor was a little tired, particularly the toilets, but it was a great lunch.
Stayed pre covid and the hotel was looking a bit dated. But since then it has been updated and refurbished. Not lost any of its charm. Food was excellent , the staff were outstandingly friendly and helpful . We had our retired greyhound with us . The hotel is very pet friendly and they even gave her a soft toy to play with. It was lovely to walk out of the hotel with the dog straight over to the abbey gardens in the morning. I can certainly recommend The Angel! We will be back
