The athletic facilities are amazing, location is central and close to key downtown areas
The halls, rooms are dated, a bit of facelift would not hurt
Hotel and gym were immaculate, later than usual checkout (noon) made it really easy for us to depart after an event. Locker rooms were well appointed and thoughtfully designed. Club areas maintained the charm of old LA without appearing worn or dated, and the lounge upstairs was very reasonable for LA pricing.
As a hotel guest who was clearly not dressed to workout at the gym, I got stopped often to show a hotel key card as I was moving about the building. The staff, while kind, created an atmosphere of unwelcomeness, as thought we did not belong in that space. An easy remedy to this would simply be to have card access entry points (like access to the elevators) so that we weren't constantly stopped by staff.
Incroyable, lieu unique !
the location is handsome
* Booking issues: After following the property's phone instructions talking to the staff to cancel and rebook for the right room witht he right number of people, the cancellation request was left pending for days. * Poor support: The property repeatedly delayed the decision—even when Booking.com intervened—right before our flight, forcing my friends to book elsewhere at a much higher price. * Final hassle: A defective water bottle bought in the room resulted in a double charge at the front desk as I tried to exchange it. A friend had a double change on bottles as well.

Some of the front desk staff were helpful and tried to assist with the situation.
The room was extremely small, outdated, and looked very different from the photos online. The furniture and facilities felt old, and even the TV was unusually small. You really do not realize how disappointing the room is until you actually go upstairs and see it in person. I personally did not feel comfortable staying there at all. The refund process was also unnecessarily frustrating. Even after front desk staff told me that a refund would be issued, I was later told it still needed additional manager confirmation, and the process kept being delayed without a clear answer. What made the experience worse was the attitude of one female front desk employee when I called to follow up. Instead of trying to help resolve the issue, she argued that simply going upstairs counted as “checking in,” even though I did not actually stay in the room. Her tone was rude, dismissive, and unnecessarily sarcastic. She seemed more focused on finding reasons to push back than on helping a guest solve the problem. Once I explained that the manager had already confirmed the situation, her attitude immediately changed. Some staff members were helpful, but the room itself, the inconsistent communication, the repeated delays, and the attitude of this particular employee made the overall experience extremely disappointing.
Everything was awesome
Really nothing.
Close to public transit, best soft poached eggs ever, and Duke's Fish sandwich was wonderful. Pool great for laps, and decor and ambience was excellent. Enjoyed the jazz event on Sunday.
Confusing access to women's locker room. Unclear instructions.
The entire staff was incredible. Everyone I came across was so kind and helpful. My room was spacious and comfortable. I booked a self-care day with massage and facial. My massage therapist was wonderful. She made me feel at ease throughout our session. I left feeling energized and relaxed. Afterwards, I throughly enjoyed using the spa facilities. The hot tub, steamroom, sauna, cold plunge , and meditation room were terrific. Everything was clean and well maintained. There were plenty of towels, the showers were nice with great water pressure, plenty of water stations, and the locker room was well stocked.
It seemed like it took a long time for my room to be cleaned. After almost five hours at the spa, I returned to my room and the attendant was still there. I sat waiting in the hallway for them to finish. I needed the duvet on my bed changed. It was not.
A classic institution! The workout areas and sauna / spa facilities were top notch. A big shout out to Melissa and Monica, who made this non-member / reciprocal club visitor feel very welcome — a total class act!
An amazing place. Staff was excellent, The club’s facilities and services were wonderful. I stayed one week with friends and they was stunned as well ! I ll post same pic of it . I highly recommend it ,is worth the price. Ps staff avaible 24 H
Such a beautiful place, Checking in was a great experience with Melissa. Was very helpful managing my reservation and upgrading my room. Would recommend staying here
Classic architecture and comfortable rooms.
Pillows too soft
Melissa and Evette is awesome. They went beyond expected to assist us on all our needs. They are so friendly and made our stay here so pleasant. We’re celebrating our 29th year anniversary and it’s such a pleasure to have a great crew who knows how to connect to customers. This place is so wonderful and very clean. You can just literally stay inside this club and enjoy the place. Mellissa and Evette needs a recognition and perhaps a raise 😉👍
We came here to visit an our friend who’s a member here. The facilities are great, I would consider becoming a member if I lived closer to the club. Melissa and Monica took care of us and made us feel welcome from the beginning!
It was such an amazing experience I came to see a friend at dukes Melissa and Monica were such wonderful front desk helping us and also showing me around before my friend arrived.
Melissa and Sierra have been amazing people that keep me coming back!
Melissa is amazing and who you should talk too. We are so happy to work with her in the future.
Front desk associate, Meussa or Mellisa, was very helpful!
I love the laac as I use the facilities of the club extensively. The gym/swimming pool and the steam/jacuzzi are phenomenal. The people are so helpful and positive… that made my stay special too. Must mention a gentleman named Brandon…he was exceptional. Extremely helpful and very cooperative and out to help.
Melissa, Monica, & Jackie have always exceeded my expectations upon arrival! Promotions in order???
Every time I come into the club, I’m always greeted by Melissa, Monica or Jackie! It’s always lovely to see them anytime of the week :)
I am a member and Melissa was so great and helped me so much my time here
Great amenities, great staff (Brandon was amazing) and just overall wonderful stay!
The hotel is located in an area of downtown that makes it easy to explore part of Los Angeles in all directions. There are delicious taco vendors nearby (Tacos La Cuevita!) and you can snag a bus, rideshare, or e-bike/scooter easily. The front desk staff was pleasant. The bed was comfortable. And guests have access to the impressive gym/pool area.
The bathroom conditions did not meet my expectations. It felt like a hospital bathroom in need of upgrades - the ceiling tiles were disheveled in places, there were several chips in the white tiles on the floor, the overhead light flickered sometimes, and there was mineral buildup on the shower head. The main room's lighting is too dark and the windows could use more soundproofing in some capacity. Also, I would not recommend this hotel to families or couples who are easily spooked by the colorful riffraff one is likely to encounter around this part of the city. You will regularly encounter homeless and mentally ill individuals while walking in the vicinity. For security purposes, the hotel makes you buzz the front door at a certain point in the evening. It worked fine as a solo traveler from Chicago.
Clean, attractive, comfortable room, gym and pool amenities, convenient location DTLA and Metro transit
Liked everything. I’ve stayed there many times.
The gym facilities, style and decor
Was a bit old and noisy - bathroom could use an update
Valued meilisas sharing of historic info of my stay made my selection her feel right. She got me all the details I needed to make my stay ideal. Would value her help again
Melissa Jackie and Maria were amazing! I loved the gym so much! Everyone was so kind and helpful. Will def recommend to others; super cool nostalgic place full of history
Great pool and gym etc. Standout for a hotel, anywhere. Really lovely staff. Well situated in downtown (itself maybe not LA's most exciting area but...)
Late February-Early March 2026 we stayed for seven nights at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The hotel was the base for a five-day small group (20 people) modern architecture tour. We added two days for some additional sightseeing. The location downtown is excellent for walking to museums and restaurants. The building and hotel are historic, being more than 100 years old. That means that the hotel’s lighting and decor were not modern but were typical of luxury 100 years ago. Nonetheless, it was beautiful and well maintained. Our room was comfortable, and the two dining spaces were excellent. We had good breakfasts in the well-lit, modern decor of the Famous Players restaurant, and several dinners in Invention, the historically decorated fine dining venue. The dinners were excellent, and one evening we enjoyed light jazz (a pianist accompanied by a string bass with no vocals). It was a delightful and unobtrusive accompaniment to dinner. One of the best parts was the friendliness and helpfulness of the people on the hotel and club staff. Melissa, who checked us in upon our arrival, was genuinely friendly and welcoming. It seemed that she was always on duty at one of the lobby desks each time we passed through. She always provided a friendly greeting and asked if we needed anything. The one time we really did need something (having tickets we bought online for a concert printed), she took care of it quickly. Alex, whom we met when we explored the rooftop terrace, also greeted us with genuine friendliness and much information about the hotel/club. Another almost always present and welcoming person was Iliana, the hostess and jack-of-all- trades at the Famous Players restaurant. She provided a friendly greeting each morning when I asked for and received coffee to take back to our room before returning later for breakfast. On her two days off, her replacement was equally cheerful and helpful. In addition, in the frequent encounters with other staff, on elevators, or in the hallways, we always received a friendly greeting and were asked how we were enjoying our stay. These days, we find that these common courtesies are not so common. The Los Angeles Athletic Club does an excellent job hiring and training their staff to achieve this. We would stay at The Los Angeles Athletic Club again if we were back in downtown Los Angeles.
The club is absolutely beautiful. A total throwback with historic photos and beautiful architecture. Everyone there was absolutely wonderful and could not have been more helpful. Melissa, Jasmina, Sonya and Orlando were among a few people who were just delightful. The service in the restaurant was great as was the food. Great coffee and smoothies in the café. And if you’re there to work out, the swimming pool is amazing, there’s a huge basketball court, multiple weight rooms, a track, pool tables, a spa and a barbershop. It’s a full service club. The members are super friendly. And the view from the roof is incredible.
I only recently learned the Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC) allowed non-members to book their hotel rooms. I had recently toured the Jonathan Club, which only allows members of their Club alliance to stay there. The LAAC was founded in 1880; the current purpose-built 12-story building opened in 1912. While the Jonathan Club is an old-school private social club that has decent athletic facilities, the LAAC is first and foremost an athletic facility that also has restaurants and lounges, hotel rooms, co-working spaces, ballrooms and meeting rooms, a spa, and barber shop. I believe many if not most of its members join for the athletic facilities. It offers far more than any regular "gym". Here are the athletic facilities you can find at the LAAC: studios for yoga, pilates, stretching and spin. Courts for handball, racquetball and squash. Two massive fitness centres on 2 different floors. A track. A full sized basketball court. Two pools. There's a co-working area, the Olympic Lounge, but during the day this area blends into the Centennial Ballroom and the Invention Restaurant and Bar. Once the restaurant opens, it's separated off. Invention serves afternoon snacks and dinner. The adjacent cafe, Famous Players, serves breakfast and lunch and has a Starbucks-like coffee counter. There's also a pub-like space called Duke's Sports Bar that serves food and drink and has pool tables and other games. There's a charming hidden speakeasy, the Blue Room, that is accessed behind a faux bookcase on the 3rd floor but is on the 4th floor. The 4th floor also has meeting and conference rooms. The 5th floor locker rooms are very large; the men's room had a jacuzzi, cold plunge, steam room and sauna. The hotel occupies the top 3 floors. There is a rooftop deck that can host events, but is otherwise sparsely furnished. It has decent views. As a hotel guest, you pay a temporary membership fee (not unlike a resort fee) to enjoy all the facilities. The rooms are, as expected, old-school, with little current technology or furnishings. My Deluxe Queen was petite, with just a bed and a desk. There was a fridge, a safe and bathrobes. The bathroom was also petite, reminiscent of a hospital bathroom, but with dimmer lighting. Earplugs were on the nightstands, and they come in handy with all the honking and sirens that can be heard. I brough my own extension cord and it came in handy. I did not use any of the athletic facilities, but did enjoy 2 of the restaurants. The pace of the restaurants is slower than at a regular restaurant, as many diners are also working on their laptops. There was never a crowd, so tables turned over slowly, and service was similarly slow. The food I had was quite good and reasonably priced, perhaps less costly than offsite. My fave dish was the Wagyu burger and fries--delish! I saw a few kids, apparently they are welcome in all areas. I even saw some in the pub, Duke's. The front desk was very friendly and helpful. Overall a great and interesting stay in a historic property. Next time I'll bring proper athletic clothing.
What amazing experience in staying for 4 days in a hotel club. Everything is so well conserved and preserved so much history in this place. The facilities so far is one of the most luxurious hotel. Accommodations are fantastic so clean and also all the amenities are so comfortable
Melissa and Alek are awesome!!!
We came to the Athletic club to listen to jazz music. They have a jazz club within their club. When we got there the receptionist (Melissa) explained that it was a members only club and that it wasn't opened to the public. We expressed our disappointment and turned to leave, at that point she stopped us and gave us a complimentary pass to the jazz club. She was so sweet and gracious. That rarely happens anymore. Thank you Melissa and the Athletic Club for great customer service.
Great location , spa , staff. Beautiful interiors.
Bar closes too early. Parking should be free for guests or heavily discounted. $40 a day is steep.
Amazing stay!! Absolutely beautiful property with so much history, charm, and fantastic amenities, but it was the staff that made our stay one of our best stays at a hotel, and it takes a lot to impress me with 20 years of hospitality experience in Las Vegas. Brandon at the front desk was our first POC and he was so warm, accommodating, and informative. We bumped into Joseph, their head of Facilities team and he took my young son and I on a personal tour of the property and gave us a book of the history of the hotel. Also met Keith and Isabella in the retail store and they were wonderful! Remembered who we were and took the time to say goodbye and thank us before we checked ours. Sierra at Dukes was also a joy to meet and had the best playlist along with personality. HIGHLY RECOMMEND and cannot wait to stay again in the future!! Love your friends from Vegas!!
The room size was very large and confortable
The facility has two doors to 2streets. To one street there is only exit, no entrance. When you arrive with luggage to exit only door by Taxi it's difficult to reach the entrance on the other street.
The Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC) is one of LA’s most storied institutions, offering comfortable accommodations, fine dining and premier fitness. Founded in 1890, LAAC offers 72 overnight rooms within its Beaux-Arts building. The club has 30,000 square feet of athletics across five floors, including a lap pool; basketball, squash, handball and racquetball courts; indoor track; yoga and Pilates suites, and spa. LAAC features two main restaurants, including the Invention bar where we dined with friends, and Duke’s sports bar. Also notable is the Los Angeles Dodgers-themed room with memorabilia donated by former owner Peter O’Malley, a prominent club member.
Just Ok, nothing special
The Room and hotel are a quite worn with use. Scuffed furniture, carpet in room that seemed dirty. Edges of carpet have not seen a vac in months if not years...No convenient charging options, only an extension cord on the floor that one has to dig out from under bed.
It used to be my absolute favorite place to stay in LA, both because of the fun decor and an amazing athletic club. But now the rooms look a bit tired, the breakfast is no longer included. The club is still great, but they charge $$$ for an access
$$$ for breakfast, club access, and parking
nice restaurant and bars, amazing sport options, room abit back iin the days vibe, very old fashioned
the room as quite dark, curtains could purposly be opened
Close location to crypto stadium , friendly and helpful staff.
Mellissa is the greatest person I know, she helped us with everything we needed, was very supportive, professional and helpful. Abe is a wonderful guy, he was always there for us when needed. Truly a great staff and overall wonderful experience.
This was my first experience at any athletic club and the atmosphere was amazing! I felt part of history, surrounded by photos of athletes of old. I enjoyed live jazz and great drinks at the bar, I was transported to another time. There was a secret stairwell, fun to explore! The suite was cozy and plenty of fun for…activities. The view was awesome, and even more so on the roof. Staff was very helpful as we hand an administrative issue. They helped us solve it quickly and politely. A very interesting place to stay!
Great customer service the entire time me and my girlfriend stayed. Melissa was our first impression of the hotel, and she was very kind! We also went back to the front desk because we forgot a toothbrush and they provided some at the front. The view from our room was great, and there is access to the rooftop which gives an amazing view of the city. The location is near many things downtown including lots of activities and food places. Reason for the 4 star is that the bedsheets had an old smell to them, the walls are quite thin in terms of noise, and a few minor cleanliness things around the room, but overall the room was relatively clean.
Amazing facilities and very welcoming staff. Truly the people made the experience for us. Shoutout to Melissa at the front desk who made sure we got the most out of our stay and instantly set a very warm and friendly tone for our weekend. We were so impressed and are now considering signing up for a membership because of it.
I have stayed here in the past and the gym facilities and nostalgia bring me back. This time around I was checking in fairly late and Melissa at the front counter made everything so simple. Would recommend to those in town for business or couples looking for a night or two somewhere without the kids.
Good location if you want to be within walking distance of sites of downtown LA. Room was fine- clean and nice sheets. Not fancy but certainly met our needs. The athletic facilities are amazing- and worth a stay just to use them. Pool was beautiful. Lots of working spaces in the building. Bar/restaurant with lots of sports history and leather furniture. Good bar food and cocktails. Hotel rate was easy on the purse.
The Los Angeles Athletic Club far exceeded our expectations as a perfect place to stay in LA! We work in the music industry and were here for the Grammys, and it was the perfect place to land at the end of a long day. It’s beautiful and full of interesting historic detail. The amenities are wonderful. But best of all, the staff members really take care of of the guests. Bryan, Melissa helped us several times, always with a smile and great, caring attitude. Jasmine was great too. Five stars from me!
Maravilhoso, lindissimo!
Restaurant staff was very slow when no one was in the restaurant
The hotel was fine and I would give it a rating of 7.5, maybe even a 8 but there is an issue between the hotel and booking.com in terms of invoicing so be careful if you need an invoice for billing purposes. This issue has definitely influenced my low score.
The property looks nice overall
I made a reservation around 9 PM for two rooms, which I paid for in advance, as my friends and I were celebrating my birthday and wanted to play it safe by staying at a nearby hotel. We arrived around 1 AM, and the front desk clerk casually told us, “Today’s your lucky day, you’re getting a suite because I gave away your room.” At the time, we didn’t question it, assuming the suite would be an upgrade. However, after 30 minutes of waiting, the “suite” still wasn’t ready. When we followed up, the story changed — we were now told there was no suite available, but they could offer a king room with a rollaway bed. I was willing to accept this if a refund for the missing room could be provided. Instead, they refused any refund and offered only free parking and a late checkout — far from adequate compensation for the $600 I had paid for two rooms. Eventually, they handed us a key and asked for an additional $100 deposit, but at that point, it was clear we were being misled. It felt like they were trying to take advantage of our group, possibly assuming we wouldn’t push back because we had been out drinking. The bottom line is this: the hotel gave away our fully paid, pre-reserved rooms to another guest — someone who had stayed the previous night and extended their stay last minute. Rather than owning up to their mistake, they tried to cover it up by offering subpar alternatives and refusing to adjust the charges. We ended up leaving the hotel an hour later, at 2 AM, with no room and nowhere to stay. The experience was not only frustrating and unprofessional — it was unacceptable.
Worse filthy place to stay misleading charges
They where more focus to close early than than taking care care of the guests
Good gym , swimming pool
Nothing
FABULOUS. Melissa, Jackie, and Alek especially. THANK YOU
Upon arriving, exhausted, I first met Monica. Her friendliness was the first thing I noticed about the property. She was helpful, engaging, warm and professional. I was very impressed, delighted by the service. She guided me to the front desk and offered me water, I was obviously parched. At the desk I met Melissa. Without exaggeration I can say she was the most helpful person who has ever served me. She completely understood my needs without over explanation, as if she naturally understood the needs of her guests. Her service and professionalism were incredible. She knew my son's name and engaged him, communicating (he has special needs) in a kind and considerate manner. These two women made the LAAC experience beyond amazing. 11 stars!
L'accès au métro près de l'hôtel. Le rooftop sur le toit
I’ve been staying at the athletic club for many many years and love it here after they being away for two years. I walked in the door and was greedy like I had left only yesterday. Melissa was fabulous.! She remembered me even down to the fact that I always request a tea kettle in my room. We had a great conversation. She remembered my sister who often travels with me and as a bonus gave me an upgrade. The staff here is wonderful. They take really good care of me as an older woman traveling alone, and I enjoy the manly comfort of the rooms. Another plus for me is that as a photographer I love to go up on the roof and gaze at the world around me. And yet another plus is that there are some great restaurants within close walking distance. I recommend HATCH and bodega Louis. Love this place and will return again and again.
The breakfast was good but not inclusive. The room bid and the bed were comfortable . we were on 12th store not on the street side, so the room was quiet. The hotel has a very special atmosphere, the old historic building, with unique old furniture, which was really nice and stylish. It was like living in a museum:)
The key cards were not always working.
Love staying here. Great location and of course the workout facilities are incredible. Melissa was particularly helpful at the front desk. She changed our room to not be by the elevators and was extremely helpful and friendly in finding our way around the club.
The facility, gym, restaurant and bar were all excellent. The bar was a particular highlight.
The rooms need updating, cleaning and maintenance. I stayed in the polo suite and it was very dusty. Additionally the tvs were old and remotes didn’t function properly. The bathrooms were absolutely not on par for a suite. Felt old with paint and wallpaper peeling and tub and toilet area felt more like a motel 6. A significant update is needed for this to be competitive with other suites in which I’ve stayed in La. The lamps in the room were also broken and a minibar in the bar area should’ve been available. Furthermore there wasn’t a single USB port anywhere in the room. Again absolutely not on par for a suite let alone a standard hotel room in most hotels. Having to plug my phone charger into the back of the tv to charge it is not an acceptable option. Another point of frustration was the “one way door” in the lobby. Forcing us through the gym entrance is odd and having to show my room key to the gym attendant every time I came in was annoying. There seems like zero reason the actual lobby entrance isn’t available for entry to the hotel as there are people in the lobby attending to check in.
Location
When we checked in, they had ran out of key cards so they had to escort us up to our room and then every time we wanted to leave and come back, we had to be escorted to the room and let in because we didn’t have a key card
Huge room, comfortable beds, baby cot, incredible facilities
As someone who has traveled to 68 countries on six continents, I thought I had seen everything until I stayed at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. It's not a hotel, it's an experience! First and foremost, staying at the hotel gives you free access to world class fitness facilities. There are two complete gyms with free weights on two different floors, a huge swimming pool, full court basketball, racquetball, squash, etc. There are all kinds of classes on yoga, sculpting, etc. 7 days a week...there's even an Aqua Zumba class in the pool! A lot of hotels will charge you extra for use of their gyms, but what is totally mind blowing is that at the Athletic Club, all of this is included for free in your hotel stay. It's almost too good to be true! There's a surprise around every corner in this hotel. There are two beautiful pool tables, an ornate lounge that looks like something out of an old movie and plenty of places to stretch out and work. The front desk staff was super friendly and helpful, and Melissa in particular was so accommodating and informative, and she's the one who tipped me off to the Blue Room, a hidden speakeasy that you can only get to by finding a secret door. Melissa made me feel so comfortable that a great experience was made even more wonderful thanks to her help. The club is located in a super walkable area, so there's no need to have a car. There are great restaurants nearby, as well as a Whole Foods and a CVS one block away. One can take the Metro subway a few stops to Union Station, and from there one can get to Los Angeles Airport on the Flyway bus. There are also trains from Union Station to San Diego, Palm Springs, etc. so it's a super convenient location. One thing is for certain, whenever I'm staying in LA, I'll always stay at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. I can't wait to return.
The access to the pool, spa, jacuzzi, and workout classes was such a plus!
We didn't end up getting our room serviced after we purposefully took off the DND sign.
WOW! What a lovely and special hotel! I couldn’t help but think “Who stayed in this room 125 years ago? That strong man on the wall from 1925? The smiling girl on the LAAC diving team in 1940? What a spectacular historic building to discover and learn about LA’s history. As a hotel guest, you have full club access which is 6 or 7 floors of athletics. The locker rooms are superbly clean with wonderful amenities; including a cold plunge! Staff was magnificent, especially sweet Melissa at the front desk, Ciara in Dukes and don’t forget to book a massage and facial with Dora in the spa! I’ve had many estheticians and masseuses over the decades; Dora is top notch!!! Now beware, as a guest, you must reserve a swim lane in advance and they were booked/full 95% of the time we were there. When we couldn’t get a lap lane when we arrived in the early evening, after driving 4+ hours, we were really disappointed as they do charge you a daily club fee. So make sure to reserve if you must have a daily swim. The pool is just fantastic and not too chemically laden for an indoor pool. Oh! The pilates equipment is not openly available either unless you book a private, but they do have mat classes and other daily classes available with your membership fee. We HIGHLY recommend this hotel for a healthy get away. If we lived in LA, we’d be members for sure. We will definitely be back next time we have a show to catch in DTLA or if we need to be in the area for work. Thank you everybody for making us feel welcome. 🙏🏼 MC & Bouba B. -Central Coast
