Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Staff nice. Bathroom and shower good.
I don’t like leaving negative reviews, but unfortunately my stay here was disappointing. The hotel and room felt very tired and in need of some proper maintenance. The windows in particular were in poor condition, with badly deteriorated frames and visible dirt around them. The room was also dusty, and there was a large crushed insect trapped in the roller blind. There was also a distracting amount of noise from an outdoor jacuzzi/pump running until around 9pm, which made it difficult to properly relax in the room. In the end I chose to leave first thing in the morning and get breakfast at a service station rather than stay for breakfast at the hotel. I’m reluctant to criticise hospitality businesses, and the staff I encountered were perfectly pleasant, but the room itself really wasn’t at the standard I’d expect from a hotel stay.
Staff were really nice and everywhere was lovely and clean
Need some repair
Room was spacious. Bar meals were very good. Good choice of food at buffet style breakfast. Friendly, helpful staff and lovely dining room with a nice view.
Some breakfast items were a little dry as they had obviously been there a little while by the time we went to breakfast. Room was quite cold.
Nice venue. Well located.
Everything
Just a one night stop to break journey and this fitted the bill. Just off A1. Decent bar for a late pint and good breakfast.
Nothing it was all fine.
The location was lovely.
The property was in a state of disrepair- no care or attention was given to the hotel. The room where the breakfasts were served were noticeably grubby and smelled badly of damp. Our room was in the stable block - also smelled damp and dusty. The bathroom had noticeably mould - just an overall impression of neglect. The staff were unprofessional and also made it obvious they didn’t want to be there.
Reception staff friendly and helpful.
Good friendly staff... location was good, easy to find
The boiler for the water & heating keept brakeing down
The food was okay not home made pies.
The hotel is very tired needs refurbishing. Our shower was not fit for purpose and room very old. The lounge bar is not inviting. Not worth the money
Signposts well positioned as out of the way
Nothing
To be honest wants knocking down very out dated building very grubby..seen a rat..no staff on at breakfast..untill we decided just to go in sit down and help ourselves. Then finally a lady popped up and asked for our room number
NOTHING
Food in the Restaurant is superb! Service is also first class! Breakfast is plentiful and also very good with great service from the staff! Overall the Staff personnel that we encountered were extremely helpful. My wife attended the Spa for treatments and she was thoroughly impressed by the treatments and the personnel!
We did not like the view from our particular room. On our previous visit we overlooked a lovely green area! I will ask the next time! Only a few minor points as the windows could do with cleaning outside and some minor repairs of the the old framework.
Location
Needs updating/ painting etc and thorough clean Better supply milk coffee tea in rooms with poss biscuits
Location
Tired and scruffy interior, particularly bathroom
Friendly staff, easy check-in, spa lovely
Hotels a bit tired, in need of decorating and a deep clean, beds move around room at the slightest of movement, breakfast was lacking replenishment, guests waiting a long time for cooked breakfast to be topped up, it was just an average stay unfortunately
Breakfast was fabulous, the staff were amazing Sunday lunch was delicious
Black mould round bath needs attention, otherwise everything was perfect. A little dissapointed the swimming pool had been removed
Room and facilities very comfortable and suited our needs. Location was also ideal in respect of the event we were attending.
Nothing really as we were only staying overnight
The staff, the food, the spa and the cleanliness.
The water in the mornings was not hot enough.
Staff were friendly
First room stunk of cigarette smoke second room was full of cobwebs
Stunning location, great value, good food. Amazing customer service from a lady called Mandy in reception who kindly moved my room near my dads as hes unsteady on his feet and my room was originally located further away. She moved some rooms around so I could be closer to assist him
Both rooms the showers were quiet cold
The golf course has closed and become a nature reserve - very pleasant
Breakfast was plentiful and good quality with attentive and helpful staff. The surroundings are very pleasant and we enjoyed our walk in the grounds. Our room was comfortable. The reception staff went out of their way to ensure we had a good stay. Plenty of parking.
Parking was plentiful, although a bit higgledy-piggledy
Room and breakfast
Great location, grounds were good, very quiet, dog friendly. Staff very friendly.
Would of liked a walk in shower
It’s charm, not like a modern hotel.
Nothing for me to dislike
The shower pressure was really good.
Decor was a bit tired.
Good location, outside town and a few miles from the venue we were attending. The bar area was comfortable and well decorated. The dining rooms, although a little dated were clean and spacious with lovely views across a garden.
1st night the room was too hot, we we're given a fan, which helped. We were woken several times by slamming doors and the 5.30am milk delivery as our small room was above Reception, at the front of the hotel and car park. Windows in the room were single pane and need attention as the frames and the outside window sills were peeling and looked rotten. A tired hotel. The breakfast was served in bain Maries and the food was barely warm
The lovely wildlife walks around the grounds
Bathrooms a little dated
The surrounding grounds
We really didn't like our room - 2 very separate bedrooms for a family, my husband had to sleep on his own and my son came in with me because we didn't like him being so far away. The room is was very old and musty, extremely dated with a large lounge that was unnecessary and very uncosy. The hotel is very dated throughout.
clean bedding and towels
dust everywhere. on window frames tv bathroom bin floor. lost an earring moved furniture to find it and wished I hadn't dust ,dust and more dust you would expect better for £85 a night. Both rooms the same .clean bin bag but the bin filthy.
Lovely walk in the parkland, friendly staff
Extra fee for breakfast
Nothing
Every think
No lift and lower ground
The room was very spacious, gave us plenty of room to not be on top of each other, with four of us, it could have been. It was a lovely rural setting, but very convenient and quick to get here we needed to go. The main common areas of the hotel had a lovely aspect - looking out of the breakfast room at the view was divine. I wish we had had more time to use the lounge. The staff were super friendly. We would definitely come to stay again.
A bit of a misunderstanding, we thought there was going to be a pool in the spa area. We thought we saw one on the website. The steps up to our room (56) were a bit uneven and steep. I struggled with them a bit when I wasn't feeling quite right (no, alcohol wasn't involved!). It made me a bit afraid of falling down them. It would have been nice to have some conditioner along with the shower gel.
The location was absolutely beautiful and the building was lovely
The rooms are incredibly dated and very small. They looked like they hadn't been decorated in about 20 years! The bathroom and carpets were in poor condition and the furniture definitely needed updating! After paying £120 we definitely expected nicer rooms.
Lovely countryside surroundings. Pleasant staff
Room and bathroom needed some work. Maintenance clearly not top of their agenda. Big stain on carpet Bathroom windows were painted shut and the extractor fan didn't work. Bedroom window wouldn't stay open.
Clean and inviting
Nothing
Horrible hotel , Windows don't open due to locks so too hot in room carnt breath , mould round the shower seals , dust everywhere in the room , the bed sheets had a foisty smell , do not use this hotel make them aware they have to sort these problems out don't give them custom , ypu are just getting robbed because they don't care
Grounds were nice to walk around and a pub a 5 minute walk off site
Room was very dated
Great location just off A1, and beautiful property
Room was only cleaned to basic level. Cobwebs all over with a few spiders lurking in the cornered of the room and bathroom. The toilet system was faulty, water continuously flowed meaning the system refilled every 90 seconds which made for a noisy night. In the end, I took it apart and shut off the intel pipe.
Do not use this hotel, serious health hazard that has been reported to envriromental health. Staff were unconcerned and unhelpful. We booked the family room at the Hall Garth Hotel Darlington on the 31st August-2nd August. We were very late and arrived at midnight with our two children. Within two hours of arrival we established the following (by this point the children were a asleep and we didn't want to disturb them): Upon pulling out the sofa bed for my son we found a make up covered bed sheet, when we removed this we found an abundance of mouse droppings We found further mouse droppings behind the bed in the master bedroom We found numerous live and dead wasps, realising there was a wasp nest in the roof ( I have a video of the wasps swarming around the roof from the outside) The room was not clean at all and had dirt everywhere that included, chewing gum on the wall, dead insects and moths, tissues and gathered dust in the cupboards, dirty drinking cups, food waste and crumbs, black mould around the bath and bath tiles, evident spills on the worktop counter What concerned me more was that when I raised these concerns with staff, they seem unbothered, not shocked. One member of staff suggested that they may be able to move us into another room and the family that was due to move into the other room would be allocated our room. I was also advised that everything was fine that they were going to send the cleaning staff to come and clean it for us, totally unbothered about the fact there could be live mice and certainly live wasps in the space we were supposed to live in. When I stressed that we would not be spending another night in that room, rather than try to find or offer an alternative room or option, we were advised to let Hotels.com the company we had booked with know that we had left the hotel. We were offered a free breakfast, at which I expressed I was a little concerned that they had mice, the receptionist made no effort to reassure me that the kitchen was in fact clean, she just nodded and said 'hmm'. She did ask me to send the photographs of the room to the general manager as she said no one else had any power to deal with the issues. Also concerning that there was no internal reporting procedure and relied on guests to raise issues. We were eventually moved to the main hotel which was run down but clean and presentable.
Came here to stay for my husbands and grandma's 80th birthday as we attended kynren. The reception staff were amazing. Nothing was too much trouble. The hotel and grounds are fantastic. The night staff were also fantastic the gentlemen that was chatting to us on the nighttime he was brilliant. 5* staff.
The staff really made this place and got it an extra star overall for this review. Sadly like a lot of old grand houses the place was a bit tired around the edges but we knew what to expect and the room and areas were clean. The bar area was modern with a great contemporary look and decor. The evening meal was ok - nothing amazing just ok if not a little on the pricy side. The breakfast was great value at £10pp and I always say you can judge a hotel by its sausage and those along with the black pudding on offer was very decent. Again the staff in every department were lovely - unfortunately we found the bed a little uncomfortable on the fist nigh (my wife could feel a spring through the mattress). We asked for a topper for night two but they didn’t have any BUT the mattress was flipped for us and another duvet was added on top - all this magic happened while we were out for the day so well done team, great customer service. Parking was ample, the welcome very warm (even asking us if we wanted to change rooms due to a wedding that night and us being over the function room). It’s a shame there is no longer a swimming pool as we didn’t feel the spa was worth the extra cost for what there was but we had a nice walk around the well kept (but abandoned golf course). Would we go back - yes we probably would.
Nice looking building, friendly staff, small gym, handy location for the A1 & A19, nice evening meal and EV chargers.
A bit dated and untidy here and there.
We booked a feature room which was outside away from the main building , the room was unliveable and was smelly cold and damp , after speaking to Mandy the receptionist she agreed the room was not habitable and is wrongly advertised and described on here which she has previously stated to you , the room has now been condemned, Mandy was very helpful and found a nicer but was unfortunately a very small twin which was not what we had paid for and as this was our anniversary night away it obviously ruined our whole experience. We would like a full refund or we will escalate this matter.
This is a Sunday lunch review. The lunch is superb. We ate it outside on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The grounds are stunning and they have a fancy spa area. The hotel itself has lots of charm but some of it looks like it needs some money spending on it. That should not detract from our Sunday lunch experience which was superb/ the meat was tender, the vegetables crisp and fresh and the gravy was homemade and full of flavour. We were too full to try any other courses, but for the mains, someone in the kitchen clearly knows what they’re doing. It’s great, do yourself a favour and check this place out. Lovely staff too.
Dinner really good Staff exceptional
Food service times could have been made visible
Location perfect 🥰
Hotel au calme, cadre superbe Excellent petit déjeuner, personnel charmant
Beautiful place to stay. Lovely grounds. Delicious breakfast. Welcoming staff.
A few simple maintenance issues in the bathroom (holes in wall)
Cheap and cheerful- good sized room and parking.
Was a bit dated and bath leaked to rooms below.
The communal areas are clean and tidy and the hotel looks nice from the outside. The bed was comfortable and the room large. Staff pleasant
The bedroom wall paper was peeling from the walls and there was a large amount of mould in the bathroom. Furniture was a tad tired. Bedrooms really need refurbishment.
We just stayed one night. The staff are very friendly and helpful, especially the receptionist.
Our room was very close to trees so very dark.
Lovely staff, excellent food.
Walls a bit thin. I could hear conversations and TV from the next room.
The staff were very friendly, helpful and nothing was to much trouble. The location was peaceful just perfect for chilling out in the evenings. The evening meal and the food cooked to order was faultless it was tasty, juicy and a perfect plate of food. Top marks to the kitchen staff.
The hot breakfast it was serve yourself and kept warm in heated containers. The first day we had a early breakfast it was just warm enough and just edible, the second day we got to breakfast about 90 minutes after the start of breakfast the hot food had dried up, the sausages were like balsa wood, bacon just snapped under the knife and the beans thay were like a thick stodge with crispy bits in. The continental side of the breakfast saved the day fresh, tasty and enjoyable.
Good for the price nice staff good breakfast
All good
Rooms insanely hot. No air con. They don't have any fans. I asked for one at reception and the member of staff (who was sat in front of a fan enjoying the cooling) told me this. The windows of rooms are tethered and only open a crack. Mosquitos get in if you open it so you take a chance getting bitten to pieces. Breakfast room has a pile of dead flies in corner. Would never use again for these reasons. The bar is ok and food is nice. But if you cannot sleep comfortably, what's the point?
Location in grounds very nice.
Tried 3 rooms all were awful and not as described. Pool and gym out of order. Evening meal was inedible and breakfast terrible. Dining room had damp and crumbling ceilins.
Lovely location nice hotel
8
Staff were great. Food was good enough. Enjoyed breakfast Spa was good. Would have been better with a pool
No pool
Beautiful location. Nice staff
The building Needs a bit of Tlc. Lick of paint etc..
Friendly & helpful staff. Food at dinner good.
Room far too hot. No air-con. Was given a fan which didn’t work. Breakfast not very hot. This hotel is still being advertised on your site as a Golf Resort & Spa. In fact it has not had a golf-course for a year, as we discovered. What was the course is now overgrown,
We were allocated a room in The stables which was perfect separate seating area lovely walk in shower in the bathroom patio doors from the bedroom, only concern the pillows very Very Hard !! Breakfast was very good every morning no complaints, ate in the restaurant one night which all was fine except my pizza which was very bland!!
What a super hotel, so quirky with lots of different reception rooms, all of differing sizes and could be used for different occasions. Set in a woodland setting with walking paths around the disused golf course and featuring a super spa with hot tubs (one outside) a sauna and a plunge pool. The afternoon tea looked excellent and I wish we had the opportunity to have one. The facilities were excellent and the treatments offered were enjoyed by myself and my friend. The staff were very polite and professional and most helpful. The staff in the hotel were also very friendly and professional, from the reception staff, bar and hub staff to the housekeeping ladies. All in all an excellent stay which I would hope to repeat particularly after the completion of the ongoing refurbishment.
It is a good location for us. It is just off the motorway and convenient for us to access the place.
It was very noisy with the door in the corridor. We woke up every time someone walked through the door. Also, it was a very hot day, and there was no A/C or fan in the room. The window can only be opened by less than 10cm. It was very difficult to sleep in a small room with no airflow at a temperature between 25 and 30 degrees.
Old and historical
Nothing
Location
Rooms were very hot. No air conditioning, no fan available. I was offered a choice of 3 alternative rooms but all were hot. My son's room had flaking paint and wall paper from damp.
Lovely setting and helpful front desk ataff
No lift and very old awkward stairs to the rooms. Our main bedroom had a small staircase in it from the bathroom to the bedroom. No mention of the amount of stairs at any point of the booking and we were travelling with a family member who struggled with lots of stairs. Rooms.were.very hot and the old sash windows hardly opened and woondt stay open at all. TV didn't work in one bedroom at all.
Location, surroundings, staff, shower, good parking public areas
Room just a little tired could with an update. Paint coming of door, no biscuits
Rooms were pleasant, building and grounds were beautiful, staff were very friendly and down-to-earth and the price was very reasonable.
Breakfast was pretty average with sausages and scrambled eggs that didn't really taste of anything, bathroom wasn't 100% clean, the TV reception was poor so couldn't get half the channels, and there was a prom going on which meant it was very noisy until 11pm. They offered me a free upgrade but that seemed to be directly above the main source of music so I'm not sure it was a worthwhile perk. It was during the heatwave and there's no A/C and no fans in the room.
Good welcome. Room was spacious and clean. We enjoyed an evening meal.
I have stayed at the hotel several times now over the last few years and always find the experience very pleasurable. I enjoy how the hotel is tucked away from the busy town and the staff are always friendly and helpful. The food from the restaurant is always good and fairly priced.
The only downside, if I am being really picky, was that the room was very hot and sticky due to not having air-conditioning or access to a fan, that being said, my stay was through a very hot heatwave. I would defiantly not let this put me off from staying again, I would just take my own fan with me.
I put in a room above a gym. Trying to relax in my room after a hard day and was submitted to thud thud thud of someone on a treadmill at 9:30 in the evening.
Beautiful gardens comfy bed good shower
No visible information for spa Tv system needs updating to accommodate Netflix etc logins Very hot in rooms although, fan was available
Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful
Decor a little worn in places
Nice hotel unfortunately I was only there for one night so did not use the facilities
Nothing
Nice rooms, Bar Meal was good British food.
Nothing. It was a good choice to stay here. Nice breakfast too.
Good location, friendly staff
Uncomfortable room, room tired, phone not working, stained grout in bathroom, dead insects in room and restaurant.
Lovely hotel there for family 🥳 party
Great Food
We stayed at Hall Garth Hotel on an overnight mid week stop over to Scotland. First of all, I have to say that the staff we encountered at this hotel were fantastic. From the reception staff to room cleaning staff, they were friendly and helpful. We booked the four poster room which was lovely and full of character. Breakfast the next morning was fantastic and included in our room rate. We ate in the bar area and the food was very good and reasonably priced. The drinks were also reasonably priced. Yes the hotel is looking tired in some areas and could do with a bit of updating or modernising but overall we thought this was a lovely little hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay. We wouldn't hesitate to stay again if we are in that part of the country.
Sofa not clean, the room not cleaned proporly
Would not recommend absolutely dates and disgusting
Staff, cleanness and needs updated
The food was excellent.. Clean and well maintained hotel. Very helpful and friendly staff.
Exterior and grounds. Can imagine this place was tip top 20yrs ago, needs a refurb.
Somebody else’s business left in the toilet for my arrival.
Beautiful area and nice hotel
Room 27 has a cistern/toilet bowl filling noise every 5 minutes. On the 0 and 5 minutes... alllllllllllll night
Friendly staff good parking and comfortable bed and clean room
Hotel needs a bit of tlc .
Clean and comfortable
Breakfast. No lift
Clean
Breakfast was disgusting. No lift
Comfy beds. Clean
No lift for the disabled. Breakfast was shocking
I didn’t have breakfast. The location was good, just off the A1M and a short drive into Darlington
The bedroom doors have to be slammed to close them although I did manage to close mine quietly. After midnight and four in the morning guests were coming and going and the noise was dreadful.
Food spa facilities
Spa wasnt open on a Wednesday so only thing available was to sit in bar
Nice and convenient location. Big suite with annex. Large garden with lots of terraces make your stay memorable.
Friendly front of house staff, house keeping smile and say hello when you pass in corridor and kitchen staff lovely and made us poached eggs to order. Comfortable beds, so had a lovely nights sleep. Nice location with beautiful countryside around and easy to get to from main roads. Bathroom nice and exceptionally clean. Didn't use facilities on this visit.
Booked superior room but nothing superior about it and nothing like photos on website. Two lamps did not work and the security chain on door was broken. I am knit picking now, there was also a small amount of chocolate melted on chair, I wet the end of a towel and cleaned it off - no biggie, but these should have been picked up before guests arrive.
Very good value. Great location
