Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Lovely sized room, had a bath which is unusual nowadays, parking availability for guests. Good comfortable bed, and nice and quiet at night.
Had to ask for a roll of toilet paper as there was barely any left on the roll in the bathroom (no additional roll to hand), next morning around 8.30am water for bath was not hot, and when you turned the shower on, yes a good pressure but on cold, by the time you rotated the knob to a warmer level the pressure was non existent, also stained shower curtain, not a great look for an historic building
Location, the building and the history
The smoking right by the entrance
The hotel location was ideal.
Lift was out of order to take us to level 3, considering my age. reception presentation was dull. Nasty smell in stairs. no food offers. Parking machine out of order. Hotel did not satisfy my exectations. Disappointed.
Needs upgrading -- the carpet and couch especially.
Great location
The beds were just springs with a thin layer of cotton covering
It was clearly historic and looked welcoming
Staff were monosyllabic. Having carried our bags up three flights of stairs only for the key card not to work, when I went back down, there was no apology. There were signs to a non existant lift
So central to Shrewsbury. We e stayed here a few times before and this was the best yet. Lovely room (115) and absolutely spotless.
Quiet, clean, comfortable.
Shower seemed to only have cold water, but had a bath instead so.it was fine.
Location was central to bars cafes and restaurants
Bit noisy with room on the front ,no problem tho
Central location, nice cafes and restaurants nearby Lovely part of Shrewsbury.
Hotel atrocious, threadbare carpets, uncomfortable beds, could feel springs in back. Filthy stained chairs, tiny tv. Unable to have bath or shower due to unhygienic bath, bathroom shower rail rusty, everything grimy. Worst Hotel I've ever stayed in.
It’s central position and obviously once upon a time it would have been quite majestic
It seemed unkempt and very sad - no meals available and really past its best!
Location
Very tired facilities, shower didnt work properly, kettle didnt work, TV was poor
Location and room size. Parking was good
No lift
Location
Old and dated need a refurbished
Location
The hotel was very tired
Clean, great location
Staff am amazing simples
Love the fact this building is so old . The room was very clean . Mostly quiet - but noisy on Saturday evening up to around 11pm when the music stopped. There is limited parking which costs £5 a day. I think given the hotels location this is a fair price. Word of warning - spaces are awkward angles ( i suspect this would he where the horses were kept many moons ago). Staff were lovely - they couldn’t have been more helpful.
Desperately needs a refurb . Carpets are thread bare ( in my room and in the main areas ). Windows in my room were “fixed” using some sort of putty - both the bathroom and the bedroom window didn’t actually close at all. Despite this the room was the perfect temperature - not sure how this would be in the middle of winter though. Shower was ancient and water pressure poor - the water went from being a dribble to normal pressure and back to being a dribble You can hear people going to the toilet in the room above .
Good location with parking
Property hasn’t had any investment for years, so it’s tired and jaded.
The town
The room
Clean and comfortable
No option for breakfast
Location and available parking
Plumbing was terrible. Struggled to get the toilet to flush and shower over bath with a shower curtain and ancient taps which were tricky to work didn’t make for a great stay. Very noisy as bar down the bottom was uncontrolled and patrons loud
spacious room. Comfortable bed.
Overheated room. Trouble turning off one shower. The other only had cold water. Parts of the common staircases were very shabby.
Great comfortable bed,and the room had bath which was great
To many stairs...not good when you are in your mid 60s, rooms are dated and my laptop has a bigger screen than the television in the room.
The staff were lovely, it was clean and it’s in a good location.
Shabby. I stayed in this hotel about 7 years ago and it has become shabby and not shabby chic. There was no restaurant so no breakfast which I had not realised when booking. The mattress creaked and the shower didn’t work..
Great location and I can imagine this was a fantastic classy hotel back in the day unfortunately it’s in a sad state needs a lot of tlc
The smell of weed and the damp smell in general disrepair
Location. The building itself. The staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean and the bed comfortable. The building is beautiful and the location brilliant.
No restaurant at the hotel. There is a bar but we didn't use it. TV didn't work properly, neither did the WiFi as its only 4G. Many of fixtures and fittings need to be repaired and the plumbing wasn't brilliant, though the shower was better than it looked. Didn't complain to staff as we were only there one night
Location
The fact that we had to move from our 1st room to the 2nd, which wasn’t much better but at least didn’t have rust in the bath. You are greeted with a musty old smell as you come in, everything is old, dilapidated, carpets wearing thin and in the bedroom there was blood stain on the carpet. There were interesting old items in the downstairs rooms, it must have been a grand place at sometime but now it is in desperation of money, a lot of it to renovate. We were only expecting basic for the price, we knew there were no breakfasts or bar etc but we were not expecting the scene we found that looks ready to be gutted.
Clean, friendly staff, excellent location with parking. Quiet. Hotel has character, great period features and great history. It is a bit tired looking but clean and that's what matters.
Empfangsbereich
Sauberkeit, vor allem im Bad. Ich hab mich nicht getraut zu duschen. Renovierung der Zimmer ist mindestens 20 Jahre überfällig. Kein WLan. Bad überflutet. Aussicht auf einen Hinterhof.
Very friendly and welcoming staff. The hotel is in an ideal location, right in the heart of Shrewsbury and within easy walking distance of everything in the town. The Lion is over 400 years old and has some lovely historic features and plenty of character. Our room was large and spacious, the bathroom was clean, and the bed was very comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay and loved the history and character of the hotel. A great base for exploring Shrewsbury and we would happily stay again.
The only negatives for us were the additional charge for using the hotel car park, which I believe was £10 for one night, and the fact that there is no lift. This is worth bearing in mind if you have mobility issues or difficulty with stairs.
The hotel is old and a bit musty and needs sprucing up, to say the least, but not at the expense of losing its character. The room was adequate in size as was the bathroom. It was clean and the cleaner visited every day to empty the bins and replenish the tea, milk and biscuits (please take note Premier Inn and Travelodge!). Location in the centre of town with restaurants and pubs aplenty. Next time we stay in Shrewsbury, at this price The Lion will be our first choice
nothing
Size of room was excellent.
WiFi didn’t work in room
Location is great
Clean but shabby
Excellent location
Very basic room. The whole place is looking tired.
Convenient
3 pm check in...the place wasn't half full so there was definitely a clean room available.

I felt uncomfortable during my stay; the exhaust fan was very noisy
NA
No breakfast on site ,poor bar
I've stayed here a few times, so I know it well. It's a lovely historic building in the heart of Shrewsbury, ideally placed for exploring the town. Most rooms are ok and clean.
The hotel needs some money spending on it. Carpets are threadbare and some rooms are noisy (those at the front) and some look into grubby void spaces in the centre of the hotel. Facilities are basic and a bit old fashioned. No food ir bar.
Position on Wyle Cop.
Not very clean, didn’t offer any breakfast. Booking.com advertised breakfast could be paid for at Hotel, wrong.
What breakfast
The worst hotel I have stayed in anywhere. Room was something out of a horror movie, my daughter thought it was haunted. The beds were shockingly bad. Changed room for a slightly improved one but still not work £120! There was no food available despite breakfast reviews saying good. No dining of any kind. Water was hot for a shower and towels were clean is the only thing I could say. The bar was dark and no sign of anyone! Service was non-existent and the reception staff were unable to do much and seemed completely fed up. Overall atmosphere was unpleasant. Others from the event also stayed and had similar experience. Should be condemned!
First time at this hotel, couldn't check in till after 3pm as some of the rooms were being measured up? When we did check in we climbed a few stairs to the room opened the door rooftops greeted our view small room my Husband went down and asked for another room which they gladly changed for us we asked for a town facing room this one was much better and bigger two big windows the old sash openings one of which we had to wedge open as it wouldn't stay open, bed very lumpy the old divan type definitely needs upgrading very squeaky floorboards, hotel was a bit deserted small tv in room which we could hardly see, the actual hotel itself has some lovely features it's very old it will be the only time we will ever stay there sorry to say, it was handy for the shops pubs and restaurants.
Location, parking and lovely staff
Sad to see how it has deteriorated. Restaurant, kitchen, function room and front bar all closed. Back bar barely working and much tlc needed
The hotel is currently up for sale and it shows! A lot of the main function rooms are closed and the kitchens were closed when we were there in July 2026. We were only there for one night and although the hotel was definitely needing a bit of reinvigoration the staff were helpful and made us feel welcome. It is also dog friendly. Shrewsbury is a lovely town for a weekend stay and the best thing I can say about the hotel at the moment is that it is in a great location to welcome short term visitors. When I visit again, I will definitely check out this hotel. If it has had the investment it needs then I’ll be back.
Location and historical
No breakfast facilities or bar!
Lovely old building but really in need of a cash injection think they need contact Tim Martin would make a great wertherspoons
Location
Check in to late
We wanted a hotel with a great location to explore Shrewsbury on the evening and morning of our visit. We couldn't have chosen a better location. There was good wifi and an excellent shower. Note there is no lift or air-con. No breakfast on site but some really excellent cafes, as advised by the hotel, just across the road meant one of the best breakfasts we have ever had only a few steps away from the hotel door. It was a brilliant overnight stay, the location in particular meant we had the chance to explore Shrewsbury's wonderful architecture, history, churches, and museums as we wanted to. The reception was really helpful.
Friendly, helpful staff. Comfortable bed. Spacious room and bathroom. Beautiful old building. Perfect location with parking. Shrewsbury beautiful.
Lack of facilities, with no bar or communal rooms open. Poor maintenance. The hotel is for sale - hopefully money will be spent to restore it once sold.
The location is very good. The parking is excellent. It is very clean and the bed is comfortable
No breakfast or bar
Comfy beds Quite central
Tv very small, but nothing major
An old fashioned building with character. Quiet atmosphere. Near to town centre facilities.
Room was quite a long walk and required climbing lots of stairs.
The central location was great, the building was gorgeous - all that lovely wood panelling. The staff were lovely too and very helpful with taking our bags to our rooms.
It was a shame that there wasn't a bar or even anywhere to get a bottle of water but there was tea and coffee provided in the rooms and you could ask for more at reception.
Size of the room and the fact the hotel had lots of history. The location was perfect for exploring the town centre.
The hotel is in need of some investment and refurbishment, as many areas felt quite dated and tired. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite the grand hotel I had imagined, which was disappointing given its fascinating history. The hotel has welcomed many notable guests over the years, including Charles Darwin, Charles Dickens, The Beatles and Morecambe and Wise, so it has a wonderful heritage and plenty of character. However, we felt the building could benefit from some updates to help it live up to its reputation. On arrival, the welcome was somewhat underwhelming, with staff appearing indifferent rather than warm and welcoming. We were also surprised to find that breakfast was not available as an option during our stay. We visited during one of the hottest days of the year. While the hotel did provide a fan, the combination of the heat and the very small bed made for an uncomfortable night's sleep. The bathroom was particularly dated and showed signs of wear and tear. Our room faced the front of the hotel, which meant there was a noticeable amount of noise from outside during the night. Overall, while the hotel's history and character are impressive, the facilities and guest experience fell short of our expectations.
Nothing. Staff are un willing and jobs worthy. Room was not swept or hoovered tea tray not filled. Toilet didn't flush without really pumping the handle. Just unkept ALL floors squeek the smell of sewage in the corridor is so terrible. I can't believe its open. It used to be a great place the new owners clearly prefer a dump.

Location, facilities and staff. Hotel was superb - full of character and original features.
Location was great, bathroom was very nice and spacious, as was the room. nice to have some teabags and a pack of biscuits in the room also. It was also quiet and relaxed in the hotel as a whole - great for early morning starts for work. 11am checkout time also good.
The mattress was pretty uncomfortable as I could feel the springs, I solved this by sleeping on top of the duvet as it was warm overnight. The parking was more expensive than I'd expected. Hairdryer didn't work, which I did report. Overall it wasn't a bad experience, just could have been a bit more comfortable and with a bit more warmth from staff.
Secure undercover parking, cental location, quirky old fashioned
Very friendly and helpful staff. Hotel dates from the 16th century and has been beautifully preserved. It is situated in the historic centre within easy walking distance of the river.
Right in the heart of a beautiful town, a good sized room at an excellent price. Being able to leave luggage was very helpful.
The room was incredibly hot and this made it uncomfortable. Drawing the curtains and cracking the windows prior to out arrival migjt have mitigated this. No bar downstairs
Close to the centre. Facilities a bit dated, hot room and bathroom towel rack on all night and carpets could do with replacing.
As above
Very helpful and friendly staff
Bathroom radiator wouldn't turn off. Mislead by Booking.com on facilities - booked breakfast, Booking said OK, hotel didn't do any food. We were overcharged by Booking. Difficult to see exactly where, but maybe for the breakfast we couldn't have but room tate was well above the hotel rate.
The Hotel is a wonderful building dating back to the middle ages with all the old features in tact & wonderful to see however the rest of the place including the bedrooms & floors need a total revamp ,the introduction of a bar & restaurant as this will be vital for visitors .lts well worth staying there as the new owners will improve the place & we will certainly stay there again in this wonderful building. The staff were so kind & helpful & really do go the extra mile for their guests.Well worth our time in Shrewsbury.
Location, history, staff
Would have liked breakfast, meal options, bar
room, staff
it was very hot weather and it would have been better if the windows could have worked properly--some were stuck
Shrewsbury.
Extremely disappointed with the hotel, we were not informed at the time of booking that tge kitchens and bar had been closed because the property was up for sale, so no food or drink provided, I know it is a historic building but the interior was very tired, our bathroom was not in the best condition, the cokd water tap provided warm water. Overall not worth the money and marred our stay in Shrewsbury.
Great location
Tired, dated, empty, no soul to the hotel, lifeless, Dirty bath, creaking floor boards everywhere. It is in desperate need of an update. It’s like something out of the 70’s. The owner should be embarrassed at offering a lifeless property as it could be so much more given its proximity in a lovely city
The owner of this hotel should be embarrassed. It looks like it’s not been renovated in 50 years, floor boards creek, no warm welcome, just empty old fashioned space on the ground floor. I don’t blame the staff or cleaners as they can only try to make things good but honestly it’s like a ghost town the hotel, no life or soul to the place. It’s in a thriving city centre but it could be a wonderful central hotel if money was invested-. We stayed in 206 - tv far too small for the room, the bath was disgusting and stains on the carpet Where’s any pride from the owner? I can’t stress enough how dark, dingy, empty and lifeless it is Although cheap - I’d not go back even if I was paid to
Location was perfect and parking was £5 per night
The rooms were really out dated and shabby the TV .(We never used) Was about 14" and dated ..the biggest problem we had , when we showered (only the once) black bits came back up out of the plug hole . disgusting. We told the guy in reception twice it needed sorting..it never was . The beds were uncomfortable though the sheets were clean ..the lighting wasn't bright There were no sockets by the bed to charge your phone up
Great location but Very tired and needs updating. Not worth the money
Bathroom had a rusty tap only 1 towel for 2 of us
Location
Needs TLC: worn and dirty carpets
It was in a good location for us
No lift for us to take out luggage up to our room
Needs a refurbish
Too hot and towel rail on permanent. No food drink.
Great location. Good parking. Great historical building.
The towel rail in the bathroom was permanently on , made it unbearably hot. The bathroom is a bit grubby. Cracked wash basin, the taps difficult to turn off properly so water drips/ runs all the time tile grout in shower nasty mold. Lack of attention to detail. Curtain needs re-fixing. Awful dated decor. No sockets near the b led for charging the phone. Noise from the road below l. Weirdly one window had secondary glazing, the other didn't! Wasn't asked if everything was ok when I checked out. Could be an amazing hotel.
Lovely historic building in the centre of the town. Friendly & helpful staff, great building, great location.
There wasn't anything we didn't like.
Good value for money
Facilities what facilities ?
Nothing Very hot, no air con
Everything, period stain on the bed and all over the towels, no air con. Staff locked me out of my room
Everything
Its everything that an old hotel should be, we love staying there. Granted could do with a lick of paint but its clean and has original features.
The fact that you can park your car and the location in walking distance to everything
That i couldn't book at reception when checking out for next year
Location perfect
Dated and lack of breakfast. Really needs refurb
Nothing the bed springs are broke the carpets are stained the place is like a crack den
The location
Smelt stale, damp and musty. No lift. Threadbare carpets. Attic rooms with no aircon. No restaurant or food offering. Tired and in need of investment. Toilets in reception area unclean and 2/4 cubicles unusable. Overpriced due to food festival in city.
The staff were so so lovely. X Clean bed x
No air con, really hot! Not their fault we were there in a heat wave x
Top Lage, einer der billigsten Preise in der Stadt, die Ausstattung ist alt aber es funktioniert.
Keine Klimaanlage
The room and facilities were clean but there was no aircon for the stifling hot weather, although there was a cooling fan, but it didn't make any difference, and in addition the towel rail in the bathroom was on which only made the atmosphere even more difficult. I turned the shower on but couldn't regulate the temperature, so it was boiling hot, but then I was unable to turn it off, so consequently the bathroom and bedroom were filled with steam and it was like a sauna in the heatwave. It transpired that I just had to have a wash. I told the staff on the reception and they kindly went and sorted the problem, but I was unable to have a shower the next morning.
I've already mentioned everything in the first section
Everything was clean and tidy Staff helpful
Nothing
Convenient location.
Wonderful room, Elegant place to stay, friendly staff.

Need a good cleqn6
The hotel has a fantastic history and more investment in the property's furnishings and food and beverage would pay dividends.
The atmosphere of the hotel and staff feels like it has a limited lifespan and lacks the basic requirement's of a modern day hotel in providing a vibrant restaurant and bar facilities.
Extremely helpful and thoughtful staff. Especially the young blond girl on reception who went out of her way to check I was safe . Beautiful old building, so much history.
Plug socket next to bed would be handy. But that is not a complaint!
Not as i remember it .the imigrants have done it a lot of disservice .in reputation and atraction
General repairs .silly little shower head
Walking distance to everything and room to move.
Beds were uncomfortable and no restaurant available and the staff couldn’t find the glasses when we went to have a drink in the bar and had difficulty getting us ice. No atmosphere
Full of character, comfy beds, great staff, fab location
Bathrooms need updating but are functional
