Good staff.
Very tired looking.
Excellent location for exploring Derbyshire with a lovely dining room & good evening meals. We had a Court Yard which was away from the main hotel. The staff were all friendly & willing to assist.
The alternative dining room used on our first night lacked atmosphere whilst the stair case to rooms 3 & 4 need a good clean which we informed staff.
Staff were polite and helpful, especially the young waiting staff at breakfast. Bed was comfortable. The public areas were impressive and historic
These comments are made in the context of room 2 which cost over £152 for one night, and mostly also apply to my companion's single occupancy (room 1), also over £152 per night. The rooms (rooms 1 and 2) were in an annex across the car park. This was acceptable but was not mentioned until arrival. The wash basin had a a gentle slope towards the user, combined with high water pressure, soaking my clothes. The room was shabby, in desperate need of redecoration. The room was dark and gloomy. The TV did not work; the following morning I discovered a master switch out of sight behind the TV, some 6 feet up from the floor. The Shower did not work until a search discovered a main switch in the entrance hall. The cleaning could have been better. All in all, completely unacceptable for the price.
Building was beautiful and room was dust free, staff were lovely, and plenty of parking available, grounds were very pretty. Breakfast was ok - coffee in jugs was awful, thankful for the coffee machine although only offered dairy milk no alternatives.
Mattress clearly needed replacing, was so soft I only managed 3 hours sleep due to sleeping on a hill as husband had created such a dip it was impossible. We swapped sides halfway through night as body was really unhappy. And it squeaked dreadfully. Sheets were good quality and it was a king sized bed. Shower over bath was not powerful and when you have long hair rinsing takes a long while. No fan in bathroom which was noticeably missing as on entering room 7pm ish it didn’t smell fresh. Overall whole hotel needed an upgrade, and deep clean. Breakfast had ok selection, pastries were good, sliced bread was cheap sort, fried/poached eggs dried up and mushrooms tasteless. Bacon and sausages ok… We paid £149 for room and breakfast didn’t feel good value compared to what else was around.
Breakfast very good
Loved the building and the staff were superb.
Short staffed. Long waits for drinks at the bar as an event was going on as well and the staff were stretched to cover everything. Beautiful building, but the gardens and the building needs some money spending on them and a bit of tlc.
Nice building with comfortable room in older buildings which was nice. Ok breakfast
Rats running around the grounds and to the back of the building around bins. Court accommodation doesn’t look great from what I saw.
Great location, 2nd room was excellent.
First room had faulty tv & no towels, moved to another room (room 21) which was excellent.
The ambience and the porter staff who was very very helpful, as I was disabled he managed to get me a different room straight off the lift
The food was up all night with a upset stomach and that was all I had to eat
There was nothing we liked, everything we expected fell short of expectations
The room was very poor for what we were told was an executive king, bed comfortable, pillows poor, furniture poor, bathroom very poor. Dinner menu did not resemble the online menu vied before we booked.
The old building and conservatory, plus the room with the antler ceiling light. Lovely grounds.
Shower and taps water flow a but slow.
Went to the afternoon tea in aid of Breast Cancer awareness. What a treat it was. Absolutely delicious sandwiches and cakes. Scones were fresh and pillowy and there was plenty of cream and jam. A glass of pink Prosecco added to the festive feel. The staff were attentive and looked very smart in the bright pink polo shirts for the occasion. Roger ensured we were supplied with plenty of tea and made us feel really welcome. Well done Makeney Hall for supporting this worthy cause. Keep up the good work!!!
We received a warm welcome and wonderful service from all the staff throughout our stay; nothing was too much trouble.. Our room was very clean and comfortable too and the breakfast was really lovely We will definitely be back - thank you 😊
Nothing at all; everything about our stay was lovely
Beautiful setting comfortable bed clean rooms
The room I received was small compared to the others in our large party, but adequate. The staff where really friendly and accommodating.
It's difficult to keep a building that old looking fresh, but I liked the way it's kept.
It’s old world charm
It needs some renovation in some areas and attention to details eg Damp issues and threadbare carpets on stairs some bathroom renovations & also holes filled in and painted after things have been taken down from walls
Beautiful late Victorian property with some exquisite woodworking/carving. It was quiet ( in the Courtyard where we stayed) and the staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast was well-cooked.
Some areas were looking a little ‘tired’ but it was clean etc.
The setting is stunning, staff polite, friendly and really professional. The food was wonderful.
The room was spacious, but needs updating. Grouting was mouldy, paper peeling from the walls and there was a damp smell in the room, not good for someone with Asthma.
The hotel its self inside the restaurant was lovely, the room was dated and the furniture was chipped and scratched TV screen. Basically it needed a refurbishment. Bed was comfortable, pillows was comfortable , clean bedding.
The choice of breakfast , not much choice, plus the coffee machine was broken , needed .more choice for the price . Needed a mirror and plug sockets on both side of the bed
The hotel looks fantastic from the outside — gorgeous grounds and a lovely building. We arrived feeling optimistic, especially having paid £144 per night. Unfortunately, Room 41 was a huge let‑down. The room was extremely tired: dirty windows and cobwebs, worn wooden frames needing repainting, grubby walls, stained carpet, splashes on the skirting board, and a bedside unit marked from old spills. The TV was hanging off the wall, and one of the lights was half falling off. The bathroom was okay but dated. We reported everything to reception and were offered a £100 refund as the hotel was full. Fair enough — we accepted. But the next morning we were told no one in the entire hotel could process card refunds. Odd, considering they take card payments without issue and have a bar with a working till. After being told there was no one else on site, suddenly the director was there — but he never came to speak to us. Eventually, the receptionist processed a bank transfer refund. Had we left and trusted it would be done later, we doubt we’d have seen it. Breakfast was poor - cooked breakfast was mediocre using basic quality ingredients. There were empty juice bottles not refilled, no mugs, and we had to ask for hot water for tea. Stunning location, but badly managed and in desperate need of refurbishment. We won’t return.
Breakfast and location were fine. Breakfast more than substantial and included from a full English to a continental.
The only thing we missed was a mirror in the bedroom. The lack of a full length mirror was disappointing especially as we were getting dressed for an evening event. Also the lack of power sockets. Two ladies needed to charge telephones, use a hair dryer and straightener to get ready and there was only one socket. Otherwise the room was very comfortable, lovely bed and very relaxed and peaceful.
Lovely building with great character
The history of the hall
The grounds could do with a make over
Met our expections, beautiful house and grounds
As you arrive you are greeted by a magnificent, impressive looking country hotel. At check-in the lady on reception was extremely welcoming and asked us several times if we needed anything. The room was situated in the court yard area (second floor) our room was clean but tired, cracks in paint and in need of a face lift, the room was very stuffy with just a fan to cool it down. The bed was very comfortable we both slept really well. The shower over the bath ran away extremely slowly so possibly the water pressures not up to much! Overall for a 1 night stay it was adequate. Had evening meal in the room adjacent to reception this was lovely but pricey! The breakfast was DIRE to say the least, lukewarm and not very good quality. The sausages were very tough and difficult to cut.
Disappointing experience in this faded lovely old hall with its history. Despite advertising as dog friendly we were moved to a room in the 'courtyard' which had paper thin walls and no door closers resulting in a very noisy, restless couple of nights. Dogs are very restricted in the house itself and access to the grounds was limited to the lawn for everyone due to fenced off areas and garden rubbish piled up to stop anyone exploring the grounds. The beds were comfy, the shower was good and the dog got a welcome chew and treats but at £15.00 per night it felt like a basic gesture. We really didn't get to experience the beautiful potential of this hotel.
Breakfast was good selection, staff were really lovely.
Lovely afternoon tea , all items good quality, good service polite friendly , nice surroundings . Well done .
Breakfast good, however, my room rate was not ‘Breakfast included’ but a friend also staying and paying less ‘was included’. ?? Location of Hotel excellent.
No separate shower, bath shower attachment taps didn’t run well. Water extremely hot and difficult to control hot and cold mix.
Lovely position
The grounds and house needed attention.
location lovely very overpriced for state of hotel it's in desperate need of a complete makeover everywhere needs painting at the very least . it was very grubby and everywhere needs a good clean and a sweep outside
cleanliness was almost non existent very overpriced for state of the entire hotel breakfast was awful on both days slightly better today as a buffet needs a complete makeover and everywhere needs a proper deep clean and paint job
We chose Makeney Hall purely for its location, which was perfect. The room was big and the facilities good. Great that there is a lift!
Slightly faded glory, but perfectly adequate.
The location and the ground were great, and our room was clean and comfortable . The part of the hotel were our room was a good situation for our dog was quite easy to get to the grounds for a walk.
Nothing all good
Lovely setting. Great for walking, nice staff. I enjoyed a nice cool bath
Shower was fiddly.
Nice “old” building some part looked after, some neglected
Paid for dog, no bed or treats provided- but promised. Courtyard rooms need a lot of tlc - as does most of the hotel; very average at best and that’s being generous.
The room I was allocated was sub-standard, the final straw being the curtain rail collapsing. On contacting reception the Manager very quickly upgraded my room to the Bridal Suite, with a complimentary glass of wine and complimentary breakfast, it took the edge off the issues. Same manager who had witnessed the drama upon arrival.
Within five minutes of arrival it became apparent the female receptionist was perturbed that Booking.com held my card details when she didn't. Payment of my room was demanded immediately, along with a request that my card details were held?!!? Thankfully the Manager was on hand and assured me the remainder of my bill could be paid as I go. She left a very bad taste in the mouth.
We thoroughly enjoyed being at Makeney Hall again. We don't live far away, but we love visiting the hotel for an overnight stay to relax and 'reset'. It is such a charming, tranquil place to chill out, and we're always looked after so well by the staff. We enjoyed dinner and breakfast, and both were absolutely delicious. We plan to visit again later in the year.
Location
Very dated in need of a clean so many marks on the walls etc
Fantastic building in a great location. Staff were pleasant
Booked a superior king room and was very disappointed. The room was very dated, carpet had stains, dusty lights, fan and window surround. Black mould in the bathroom and the shower was useless. To top it off the bed was 2 singles pushed together that kept rolling apart.
Good value for money. Friendly staff. Comfortable room.
-
The grounds are beautiful, the surrounding pubs etc are an added bonus, the hotel itself is lovely decorated, great breakfast choice, only downside is that the room was a little shabby, chipped plaster on walls as soon as you walk in, the blinds didn’t match but bed very comfortable
The room could of reflected the price more
Beautiful location, friendly staff, delicious food, comfortable rooms. Will stay again soon!
Nothing, all good
朝食も夕食も美味しかった。 ダートフォードトンネルの支払いを手伝ってもらい、とても助かった。

I asked for a twin room, as I was sharing with my brother, but we were given a double. Luckily, it worked out ok as there was a sofa bed in our room, which the hotel staff made up for me, this seemed to be brand new and was fortunately very comfortable. Slept really well after a very difficult day attending a very sad family funeral. Staff were very helpful. We held our funeral reception at the hotel and the food and service was very good.
Breakfast times were too early for us, we ended up missing breakfast as we were exhausted and didn't make it down before 930 am, when breakfast finished. Couldn't breakfast times be extended to 10 am or 1030 am? 930 is a little early for guests who are on holiday/staying for leisure or family time and not getting up to go to work.

Quiet almost rural location, but only a short walk / drive to pubs, shops etc
All good
Dinner booking was good served by excellent Staff
Room Creaked with age and not up to expectation Over priced .
We arrived at this lovely character country hotel for a 1 night stay on Saturday 27th, our room was situated in a court yard area complete with water fountain. the lady on reception was very welcoming our room was clean but tired, in much need of a face lift, it was well aired and cool our bed was very comfortable we both slept really well, however the bedside lights seemed to have been wired the wrong way around as could not be used independently from the main light so were quite useless. The bathroom sink could not be used as the plug was stuck in the plughole and no way of getting it out !! The shower over the bath ran away extremely slowly we were left stood in over ankle deep water at the end of a quick shower, we were not able to vent the bathroom by opening the window as it opened onto the main walkway of the courtyard and any other guest walking along it could see into the room, would have benefitted from a blind or shower curtain. The floor tiles were were mostly loose with some broken ones with sharp edges We did on check out let the hotel know our concerns and let them know of our disappointing experience, hope they take our concerns on board and do some much needed maintenance and updating
Location
Bad sate of upkeep
Beautiful location and hotel. Breakfast in the conservatory overlooking tge woodland garden is a real treat
The showers are a little grubby in places
Beautiful location and hotel.
Roger in the restaurant!
Very dated and a serious lack of investment. Though paint/weed killer and a feather duster won't break the bank
Good location, great breakfast and good evening meal, staff were attentive room was great
All good
Staff, location, grand period property
Decor and furniture a bit tired, showers could be a lot better
Short distance from Belper town centre . Quiet and very peaceful and the staff were a delight .
N/A
Fantastic location close to Bepler
Room felt very dated and in need of work.
Very tired and totally needs a full revamp
The decor
No usb ports, rooms very dated and basic
Location Room size Bath tub
Breakfast buffet - food containers and contaminated cutlery to serve the food with. I am allergic to eggs and the spoons were in the eggs and in the beans! Disgusting and the hot food was there for a while so the bacon was very hard - it's just the overall buffet that was not in line with health and safety. The hotel seemed to be short staffed and nobody at bar to serve drinks in daytime. The grounds needed attention. The door lock was temperamental. The tv signal kept cutting out
Nice big bed, room decor was ok. Shower was powerful enough. The main hotel looked very nice. The gardens were very nice.
Broken floor tiles in the bathroom (Nearly cut my foot open), mouldy shower head, furniture looks a bit tired. The courtyard area needs some love to bring it back to its former glory.
The hotel was absolutly stunning. Such beautiful scenery, and very well looked after. Breakfast was very tasty All the staff were friendly and opened the bar when we fancied a drink. Deffo stay here again
The only issue we had was the toilet in our room. Didn't flush very well and it wasnt the cleanest in the bottom of the toilet
The beautiful old building and views A hidden gem The staff are a huge credit to the hotel Victoria on reception was absolutely fantastic and a maintenance chap who is very knowledgeable on the history of the building and friendly Mackney hall has a lovely ambience of a bygone era (Yes the few odd things need upgrading here and there) but that doesn't detract from its beauty There aren't enough of these places left and far too many of the plastic travel lodge type Breakfast hot, fresh and plentiful, with a great choice
Bathroom in room 18 needs a bit of tlc
Beautiful location and friendly staff.
Having stayed before in a lovely room a couple of years ago, the room we had (number 18) was very disappointing: Peeling wallpaper, frayed curtains, a faulty bedside lamp, bathroom fan broken, very uncomfortable mattress on a tiny bed (no mattress protector!!). No ability to turn on heating in bathroom and scraps of old food under the sofa. Dinner in the restaurant was very expensive for very meagre portions (not even a whole strawberry on the Eaton Mess!) and service was mediocre.
The welcome and reception staff here were friendly and efficient. They very kindly looked after our suitcase and a few other bits of luggage in their back office from our morning arrival until we arrived late that evening after a wedding reception. The hotel is set in lovely, well tended grounds but the building itself is rather tired. Some fellow travellers were in the hall itself and said they had a good night's sleep but we were in the adjoining courtyard, where the walls seem to be very thin. We were kept awake by some neighbours chatting (not shouting, playing music or watching TV) until way past midnight. When we arrived, the heating was on full blast in the room, although it was mid-June(!) so we were obliged to have a window open. Once open, the top part of the bedroom windows swung fully open, so we opened the bathroom window instead and kept the bedroom door open. However, there are bright lights illuminating the courtyard all night, which lit up the bedroom somewhat! All that said, the bed was comfortable; the room was clean and there were the necessary items to make the stay comfortable - TV, hairdryer, iron, kettle etc. Since the bathroom window gives onto the courtyard at ground level, it would have been better to have a window blind or other covering for it, even though it had obscured glass. The breakfast was adequate and well cooked - fruit, cereal, yogurt, hot buffet, toast etc. and we were in the back restaurant room overlooking the lovely gardens and local views.
Beautiful old hotel set in romantic grounds with far reaching countryside views The breakfast was hot, fresh and plentiful, along with offerings of fresh fruit, yoghurt, pain au chocolate, croissants etc in the lovely conservatory overlooking the grounds After an extensive tour of the stunning grounds and wedding room (by a chap who worked there as maintenance) who is super friendly and knowledgeable on the history of the Hotel, to Victoria on reception who was super friendly and very efficient we can honestly say some area's are somewhat in a 'faded glory' phase However The sheer warmth, enthusiasm and professionalism of the staff are some of it's finest assets I would absolutely very much stay here again There just aren't enough of these gems left anymore And far too many of the faceless 'travel lodge' types
The bed was so comfortable, and it looks like the bathroom has been refurbished. I normally stay in room downstairs courtyard 38 or 37, this time was upstairs in room 4. Nice comfortable room. Staff very friendly and helpful
Unfortunately the reason I was there was because of a family death, so we were very sad. Hopefully next time a happier occasion..I stay at the hotel regularly as it is close to my family. I was planning to bring my dog but he ended up having to stay at hone due to hospital visits.
Location and friendly helpful staff
No hot water in shower.
The food
Cold
Nice location
Thought food was expensive
The Hotel was great and the food was very good. Location was great.
The Extractor fan in the bathroom was that loud l nearly lost the will to live! Room 21.
On arrival when the receptionist saw that my wife was partly disabled and the lift was out of action she volunteered to switch us to a ground floor room. An excellent piece of customer service. Overall - all the staff were first class, friendly and helpful. Excellent evening dinner.
Nothing.
Area it was in nice staff
My room was a bit dated dark and tired. No lift working for my sister to use with bad legs
Super service. Dejlig mad.
Lovely location and rooms were a decent size.
The staff were rude at times and it seemed they were annoyed that we were there. This was a common theme from check in staff to bar staff to breakfast staff they all seemed really miserable. In total we had 7 rooms in the hotel and spent a lot of money on food and drinks. But they made the group feel like an annoyance.
Lovely gardens and really friendly staff. The rooms were so spacious and well stocked with tea and coffee
Broken lifts and the extractor fan in the bathroom was very loud!
Big car park that is no extra cost. Good staff, clean every where. Nice garden to sit in.
Rooms are very dated now.
Location, lovely gardens , peaceful and good night sleep
Could have done with air conditioning (unusually hot). Hotel in places could do with a freshen up.
Lovely building and location. Great value restaurant with nice food. Friendly staff. Comfy bed.
Our room and bathroom was very tired in places and seemed like the early shift and deliveries arrived for work right outside the window - making a bit of a noise.
Breakfast was good not great>>>>>>>>>>>>
WE had a Bath which did not work for us. to hard to get in and out off ,would like a shower. A wedding was going on and did not end until midnight then people loud talking and laughing outside when they should have been quiet.
Everything
Very friendly, helpful staff Good location Upgraded our room on arrival, which was much appreciated
Beautiful building
It needs updating
Really great room, we had a suite. Thought the breakfast was lovely and really good value for money Lovely and quiet nights sleep.
Nothing
the size of the room was ok
these days smart tv are non negotiable the tis in the suite we very old and wouldn't even allow mirroring .The room was old and in need of up dating , the bed was small for a suite the pillows were flat and uncomfortable
The suit was very spacious with its own private balcony very large bath and a sauna in the room
Not having an option to chose the size of the robes
Beautiful peaceful setting we enjoyed watching the wildlife on the lawn at meal times
My first impression of the hotel was very good from the outside, as it looked welcoming and well presented. The staff were friendly, kind, and approachable throughout my stay, which made me feel comfortable and valued as a guest. They were always polite and willing to help when needed, creating a warm and positive atmosphere
The breakfast fruit I would have preferred to be separate rather than mixed together in a bowl. The bedroom was big, which was good. The bathroom had a lovely large bath, but unfortunately the shower wasn’t working. I didn’t get time to report it until I left because we had to go out. The bottom of the toilet could do with bleach and a thorough clean as it was brown at the bottom, which didn’t look very nice. Overall, the hotel could do with redecorating and updating. If this was done, I would be happy to stay again. The carpets on the stairs were very worn and had different patterns, which looked untidy.
Great place to stay. Right on the doorstep to beautiful scenery. Great staff and food. Comfy bed and pillows. 3 pubs within walking distance if you don't mind going up hill on the way back, only for a short distance though. One of the pubs is a great Indian restaurant.
Nothing
We were offered a room up grade, pleased, couldn’t accept it because we had a pet that booking.com hadn’t made known, disappointed. We liked the location and the grounds
Cleanliness seemed to be an issue, stains on sofa, strong sewerage smell in bathroom, if we had been staying for more than one night would have asked to be moved. Table in dining room not cleaned from previous sitting, cutlery dirty, glasses dirty
Velmi pekne okolie a samotny priestor bol prijemny a originalny.
Opacny system upratovania ako som zvyknuty. Upratovanie bolo len na poziadanie.
A wonderful room (upgraded).Dinner and breakfast were excellent.
The food was exceptional The staff were brilliant
The hotel in general needs a lot of maintenance it looks unkept in a lot of areas There was mold in the bathroom which had just been painted over One of the radiators was on and there was no way to turn it off
Breakfast was very good, and quite fulfilling.
Everything was very good, but unfortunately they don’t prove bedding for baby cot, which is understandable
Very rustic beautiful old property. Lots of character but all the modern facilities you would need.
Nothing.
Lovely staff, room was newly decorated and huge, dog friendly, fab location with pub just 2 mins walk away.
Hotel room was far too hot with heating on both nights after being mid twenties both days and humid. We couldnt sleep and our dogs were unsettled and panting. We couldnt turn it off but they gave us a fan the second night.
Excellent value for money.
I took my husband for his birthday for the weekend, i was very disappointed, i asked for a full bed we got twin beds the bedding had hair in it and stains on the sheets, the toliet didn't flush vey well and had black stains in the bottom of the toliet, there was a tiny shower no bath it had a very unpleasant smell in there, We were put into room 31 it was supposed to be a exectutive king suite!!! It was not what i was expecting i just wanted to leave i felt dirty in there. we saw mice running around and was told its just field mice!!!! The breakfast was ok but not very warm. There was plenty of parking. The grounds just outside the hotel are nice the gardens need some care they are overgrown with things loke old fridges ect dumped. I have stayed in much better hotels for a lot less money i went for Makeney Hall because i wanted somewhere special to stay with my husband it was a surprise Birthday present i was so unhappy with the place.
Our 2 night stay was amazing from start to finish. The staff were so friendly and the room was lovely and clean. We brought our dog with us and it’s brilliant how dog friendly the hotel is. We were provided with a dog welcome pack on arrival, and we could have our dog with us at breakfast in the drawing room. Would 100% recommend and we will definitely be back.
Lovely character hotel Beautiful suite rooms at a good price And courtyard room that are dog friendly Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff Great breakfast Cocktail bar Evening meal available too Parking available Bar did lovely sandwiches and sides and afternoon tea
