Good clean comfy room
All
Location good
Very tired looking property . Had sea view but windows so dirty could barely see !! Side of bath had dirty marks down it .
Lovely professional staff Excellent sized room Very clean Tasty restaurant food
Cistern was very noisy and slow to fill Sink tap on right was loose
Nice and friendly
Nice and local to the pavilion and restaurants
Friendly staff,close to cliffs pavilion
Very outdated property,we only use this hotel for a one night stay when going to the theatre
We had a pleasant room with side Seaview Very comfortable
Very small lift that could do with a good cleaning
Das Hotel ist etwas in die Jahre gekommen, aber immer noch ansehnlich. Große Gemeinschaftsflächen, Zimmer mit blick aufs Meer. Einfache Zimmer aber ordentlich.
Der Aufzug ist sehr klein
We liked the location as it was very close to the cliffs pavilion & the breakfast was very good.
We spent over half an hour on arrival trying to sort out parking, first on RingGo which you suggest ( which didn’t work and this was no surprise to the ladies on reception) so they advised us to download another app, which didn’t work either, in the end, the lady kindly put parking on her phone and I gave her the money. We were then given the wrong rooms, eventually we got sorted, but it was chaotic, not to mention stressful and quite a few guests were complaining/unhappy for one reason or another. We weren’t advised where to find the rooms or where the lift was etc, it has to be the worst check in we have ever had. And the hot water only dribbled out of one of the taps in one of the rooms. But having said that, even though, we feel the rooms, & hotel need updating, it was an ok stay, and served a purpose for visiting the cliffs pavilion, though when you see the photos of the hotel online, it’s a little disappointing when you arrive.
Lovely friendly staff rooms very comfortable
Everything was as we hoped
Close to venue, room (executive suite) was excellent, nice walk into town
No tv remote
The Lady at the restaurant was very friendly
I‘m travelling most of the time of the year and this was one of the most dirty rooms I ever had. There was still some rubbish an clothing from the previous guest under my bed.
Alles insgesamt gut bis sehr gut.
The location was good with very pleasant walks into both Southend and Westcliff.
I unfortunately mislaid my car keys. When I asked at reception I was told they were not there. After a lot of searching including calling out a breakdown service the keys were found in the safe at reception. The team needs to communicate more!
Up graded to a suite and had half board great value for money it had a large jacuzzi sea views and a stones throw from the theatre
Nothing
The staff, the bar, no breakfast included
The food was cooked in reused oil
Proximity to the Cliffs Pavilion
The hotel could have been exceptional and probably once was but it looked like it had not been maintained at all in recent years and everything was worn, grubby and shoddy. I had what was sold as a suite and whilst it had a separate sitting area the furniture looked like it had been purchased from a charity shop, the paint was peeling off the walls in places, both terraces were filthy with either peeling or mismatched paint and there was a horrible blocked drain smell in the bathroom, which probably accounted for the shower tray filling up instantly amd water pouring over the side rather than draining so I had to abort the shower for fear of flooding the room below.. When I arrived there were contractors drinking outside who told me they bought their own drinks back to the hotel because the bar was too expensive and when I paid £13.50 for one double rum and coke I realised they were right and took my custom elsewhere.
Excellent

Location
Double bed was 2 singles pushed together window didn’t shut and water pressure in shower very low
Room, breakfast
Na
The location is fantastic. The room 'The Hamlet" was lovely with beautiful views and jaccuzi bath or shower. Very comfortable bed. Breakfast was buffet style and nice.
I know it's hard but windows needed cleaning, my only negative.
There was nothing I liked about this hotel
Family room was tiny. Bathroom smelt awful. With an annoying convector sound coming from some where. The lift to our third room was so small only two at a time. Staff were unfriendly and dismissive.
Only the location
Rooms- we didn't know that hotel doesn't have family rooms are with sea view until we go there. Water was not draining properly in the bath tub.
Property was ideally located easy to find.
Room was a little tired in places , ie odd tile in bathroom, jacuzzi bath that didn’t work, unadjustable shower head and a window which didn’t open. Bar staff were not very friendly.
Handy to restaurants
Location
Room, dirty carpets, no cupboard, complete hotel was smelly, smell in the room, staff not welcoming
Comfy beds, nice staff. Great sea view
The general reception area has a great ambiance. It is colourful and looks good. 😊
As soon as I entered the room , it had that general stale or dump smell of a very old cart that hasn’t been cleaned for years. The smell that can give you a “heart burn”! The main pillow the blue one smelled like it had never been changed in a long time too. It smelled stale as well as the bed head stand. These need to bbe replaced together with the general hotel carpets for people to be in a clean environment worth their money. See pictures below. Note: For our two nights stay, when they cleaned the room they didn’t replenish the toilet paper. We had none for day two! That was bad!!!!
The location is beautiful.clean and very good service
Car park
Location
It was a terrible room, dirty spider webs al over the windows, should have a bath in the room but it wasn’t and the shower didn’t even have a protective cover so couldn’t even have a shower
The location is perfect just 10/15 minute walk into town and the pier! The check in staff very friendly. The breakfast is great value and delicious! The bar is well stocked with red wines and Estrella Galicia
No negative comments from me.
Location was good. Not too far to walk to the shops or seafront. Breakfast was good.
The steps were extremely slippery in the wet. The lift was tiny so I and others I was in a group with ended up using the stairs. Room maintenance was poor. Shower head leaking and fixed on wall in a bad position. Toilet flush lever loose. Grab rail on bathroom wall broken. Window handle loose. Big towel stained. The bed cover had a hole in it. Wasn’t worth the money I paid.
Lovely hotel in a great location near the Cliffs Pavillion and very near the sea. Comfortable and clean, and a very cool bar. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Spotless room. Comfortable bed. Good breakfast.
No pastries available at breakfast (not the end of the world!)
The breakfast has a good range off different types and drinks, easy help yourself and didnt have to wait long for something if it run out
Had a ask for more toilet roll, soap and towels as the cleaner never left any or took and never replaced
Not sure
The bathroom had no windows and smelt of sewerage , the night was noisy outside and people where noisy in side in their rooms
Beautiful building being updated. Fabulous staff that make you feel very welcomed. Enjoyable breakfast and dinner. Fabulous furniture in lounge and bar area.
Music in bar area would be great. The signs for downstairs toilets need to be on show too.
Buna noi am.stat 2 nopti nea placut super mult mic dejun gustos , doamna de la receptie Inna nea ajutat super mult.. multumim
Totu a fost super bine
Lovely time spent in Southend and at acomadation Great service and staff were very plesent
It was a break from the norm of the day to day liveing
Nice location. Clean and comfortable. Staffs were nice and courteous.
Room was difficult to access as we had to use both lift and stairs. We have a baby, and it wasn't easy at all. It was during the heat wave, no AC and the fan provided wasn't enough. We had to go buy a new fan as our baby wasn't comfortable with the heat.
I felt I was entering a hotel with a glorious past. Updated to fit in with today’s standards, of course. Built 1891 or so with a commanding view over the Thames Estuary. Big rooms too. Felt I got a lot of value for my money. Would definitely stay here again.
Good location place near to tube station
Good facilities even breakfast as well
Lovely staff.clean rooms
Nothing
The location was great for Cliffs Pavilion.
The WiFi. It kept going off every few minutes. The two Receptionists couldn't understand why, it hasn't happened before in a hotel.
Great location, the theme park/main beachfront is about a 15-20 minute walk away. Staff were friendly. Bathroom was nice and big and featured both a shower and a bathtub. Comfortable beds. The hotel has a rather retro/oldschool feel which we personally liked
The TV did not have a USB socket. There was no A/C in the room which was brutal on a summer day. We came back home late at night and couldn't figure out how to get back in the hotel, fortunately after a few minutes a guest let us inside, apparently there is a phone to call a doorman but we didn't see it. Parking was awkward but this was not the fault of the hotel
Nice surprise of a side room with a lovely seaview. It was a standard class room so a bit small but pleasant & met our needs. Modernish bathroom with shower. We enjoyed our stay & would definitely stay again
The lift very small & could do with a clean
Location
Was difficult to get access to beach
Great location for Cliffs Pavilion. Some staff can't be bothered and look miserable and abrupt. Rooms need updating. Value was good. Nightmare getting a drink from the bar, stupid idea you have to go to reception to get a barperson. Bedding was clean, base of it wasn't level and headboard was dirty, radiator coming off wall. No bottled water in room. Breakfast was ok, some items been there too long and dried out.
Had no breakfast good location
Nothing
Dirty and unclean. Over priced. Badly maintained facilities.
The view from the room was satisfactory.
Where do we start. Too much to put down on paper. Very disappointed.
HORRENDOUS EXPERIENCE – AVOID. THE AFTERCARE HAS BEEN EVEN WORSE. I genuinely cannot remember ever being this disgusted with a hotel or the way a serious complaint has been handled. We stayed at Muthu Westcliff Hotel as a family for three nights and paid over £450. During our stay we found live insects on/around the bed, which we believed to be bed bugs. We have the original video and photographic evidence. My wife also found a tiny translucent insect on her arm while showering. Then came the bites. Between our family we suffered well over 100 bites. My wife has since had a particularly nasty reaction on her foot and sought medical advice. The room itself was also filthy. Stained pillows and a toilet with horrible brown staining/scum around it. The standard was nowhere near what I would expect from a hotel. But what has made this whole experience even worse is how the hotel dealt with us afterwards. We reported everything, supplied evidence and repeatedly asked for senior management to contact us. We had to chase and chase. We asked for details of the pest-control inspection, what happened to the room after we left, whether it had been cleaned before inspection, whether bedding had been changed and whether anyone else had occupied it. Eventually the hotel produced a pest-control report from an inspection carried out after we had left saying nothing was found. They then told us the insect shown in our footage appeared to be a “wall spider”. I find that absolutely incredible given what we personally witnessed. A later inspection finding nothing does not change what happened while we were actually staying in the room, nor does it explain how several members of the same family suddenly ended up covered in bites. We also had the nightmare of returning home worried about bringing insects into our house. Clothes and belongings had to be bagged, isolated, frozen or heat treated and our luggage quarantined. After all of that, their answer? £50. A £50 “goodwill” refund on a £451 stay. They then informed us that, as far as they were concerned, the matter was closed. Absolutely unbelievable. I have now escalated this outside the hotel and retained all photographs, original videos, pictures of the bites, medical information, correspondence and booking records. People can make their own minds up, but I certainly know what my family experienced. What disappoints me almost as much as the original experience is the dismissive way we have been treated afterwards. I would never stay here again and could not recommend this hotel to anyone. In
the friendliness of staff
the room. we have stayed several times before and this room was appalling. the bed was so small. if we turned over we fell out twice. the shower cubicle. i couldnt even bend forward. the bracket holding the shower head was broken and filthy. the tap in the bathroom sink was broken. the pipes were rusty.
How close it was to where we was going out too
The hotel needs updating, the shower was shocking & broken, no Aircon in rooms so was very hot, breakfast was terrible no taste to it and using cheap products drink prices were overpriced needs some real attention to it all
The hotel is in a good location with great views if you’re facing the front. Close enough to walk to Southend city centre.
The decor is looking tired, and there is plenty of work that needs doing. A small fan is also not sufficient during the summer to cool the room meaning sleeping in summer is difficult.
I didn’t get the room I picked
Location.
Nothing to dislike
Our stay at Muthu Westcliff Hotel from 7–10 August 2026 was honestly one of the worst hotel experiences we have ever had. We booked a Family Room through Hotels.com. What we experienced was completely unacceptable, even though this was one of the cheaper hotels in the area (we now know & have experienced why.) During our stay, we found live insects on the bed, and I was bitten during the night. I woke up with multiple bites and spent the night extremely uncomfortable due to the itching. Some of the bites have been so itchy that I have had to attend a pharmacy to obtain cream and antihistamines upon returning home. Finding live insects is horrifying, particularly when you are expecting to relax and get a good night’s sleep. The condition of the room was also completely unacceptable. The pillows had visible marks and stains, while the toilet was disgusting, with brown scum and build-up around the edges. When we raised this, we were advised that the brown staining was supposedly “cosmetic rust” and was not hygiene-related. This is extremely difficult to believe from the photographs we have taken. Ceramic toilet bowls and basins do not themselves rust, and this level of staining and build-up should not be present in a properly maintained and thoroughly cleaned bathroom. Whatever explanation is given, it does not change the fact that the bathroom was visibly dirty and fell well below what we consider an acceptable hotel standard. The worst part is that we are now having to deal with the aftermath. We took the decision to disinfect our clothes and belongings due to worry about inadvertently bringing the problem home with us. The stress, inconvenience and additional expense this has caused have been a one we will not forget. Management and communication/customer service have also been extremely poor. We were given an email address to send photographs to and were advised that a contractor would inspect the room. Despite the seriousness of our concerns, we did not receive a single returned phone call from management, we tried several times to reach out and only ever got through to front of house to then be advised it would be escalated and someone would be back in touch. Days after leaving the hotel, we were eventually contacted by the general manager & offered what was described as a gesture of £50. To be quite frank, this was insulting. Considering the hassle, stress, disruption and expense we have been through, £50 does not come close to acknowledging the seriousness of our experience. At this point, it is not even about the money. We would rather avoid this happening to another guest. If the hotel believes £50 adequately addresses what happened, that says a lot about how differently we and management view acceptable hotel standards and appropriate levels of customer service. Thankfully, we did not eat at the hotel, so I cannot comment on the food or dining experience. However, based on the condition of the room and the way our concerns have been handled, the rooms and customer service have a lot to answer for. I also want to make it clear that our photographs and videos are not allegations or assumptions. They were taken during the duration of our stay and document exactly what we encountered. It is therefore concerning that there appears to be such a significant difference between what we experienced and what management considers to be an acceptable standard. This was not simply a disappointing stay. Being bitten during the night, dealing with severe itching afterwards, finding live insects in the room and then having to disinfect our belongings has been an extremely distressing experience. I genuinely would not want anyone else to have to go through what we have experienced. For the sake of £50, we would much rather highlight our experience so that future guests can make an informed decision before booking.
Good location
Tired , dirty , ripped stained bedding , carpet stained and dirty , dirt dust cobwebs all around windows , curtains didnt cover window or block out any light ,corridors stunk of smoke.
We stayed for 3 nights for my daughter's birthday. We were out for most of the day, therefore only at the hotel early mornings and very late evenings. Lovely and helpful staff. The hotel restaurant is clean and nice. The lobby is very quiet and peaceful. Paid parking outside with hotel code. Perfect location by the beach, nearby restaurants and cafes, close to the shopping centre and amusement park.
Room could do with a makeover. Looked slightly run down. Wallpaper dirty and peeling and carpet stains.
Convenience for the show at the theatre
No aircon in bedrooms hottest day of year and duvet on bed unable to sleep. Breakfast was help yourself with a very miserable waitress who was not enjoying her job!
Atmosphere was good and comfortable
Expected better amenities.
location is amazing
whilst the bathroom appeared new, the roomitself was quite dated and could benefit from redecoration.
Hotel was clean and tidy. Lovely location.
Room was very warm, we could not open top window to get some air and there was no air con or a fan to use. I had to ask a member if staff who gave us a fan to keep in the room on the 2nd day. Lift was tiny with no ventilation. My Granddaughter and I were stuck once on ground floor, door of lift wouldn't open. My daughter had gone down the stairs, was not in the lift with us, she called for help but after a few mins, with no one managing to help yet, my Granddaughter became very scared and lift was very hot with no air. My daughter suggested we pressed level 2, went back up and got out safely then came down staircase. Wasn't sure this would work but had to try something. What was disappointing is that not one member of staff asked if we were ok or apologised. There were 3 staff members as we came back down, one just asked me if I remember how door closed! That was it. But also just to say, on our 2nd ev, there was one person working, minding reception and the bar. For such a large hotel, this was quite unfair on him. Overall, place was nice, but lift experience wasn't.
The breakfast was sensational. The staff were friendly. Great size room. Juat a few marks on the wall and the bath could use a reseal. All these tiny things aside we had a great stay. Thank you.
Just a few tiny cleaning issues. Nothing major.

I like the view, but Windows needs. cleaning
Short staff
Nothing
The staff were rude, the hotel was tired and grubby. It was like being in a nursing home
Good location and nice view
There is no brush in the toilet
LOVED EVERYTHING 😍
I was not keen on the lift it very small and hot and standing and pressing the button took so long The rooms need A/C
The hotel had beautiful views, amazing food, the room was huge and the staff were wonderful
Only 2 out of 8 working plug sockets in the room, peeled wallpaper in places, no cups or water in the room just a kettle and coffee stuff, the wifi was completely useless and the fans supplied to the room (in the middle of summer at 30°) either didnt work or were less useful than having a window open, the toilet paper was cheaper quality than any other hotel ive stayed at 200 pounds a night i expected more
Food was tasty.
Some staff seemed rude. Especially lady in restaurant who spoke abruptly and took payment for food before I even got my breakfast and made me feel like I wasn’t going to pay afterwards.
The peace and quiet
Nothing everything was great
The location was lovely and also the staff
Air conditioning didn't work properly
Close to town centre and pleasure beach. Good breakfast spread, although no coffee machine. Some staff were helpful.
Compact double was a tiny double bed and very dated room with broken curtain and lamp. We were moved to another compact bedroom which also had a tiny bed and boiling hot so no sleep. Asked to be moved again. This time upgraded to a king bed. Much nicer room and newly refurbished. Room quality is very inconsistent but I suggest not booking a compact double unless you are both slim!! First night we complained we got a really hard time about wanting to change room as hotel was full. Lady on reception not helpful but other gentleman was lovely.
Location and good value for money

Convenient for Theatre and seafront
Towels were small and very thin. Toilet paper very cheap. No spoons in the room, just wooden stores and only one glass. Showered was very temperamental. Restaurant menu not inspiring, we were the only diners, says it all. Couldn't get a drink or any food on our last day till 3pm. Not good for such a prestige hotel
I like the breakfast in the location that’s it
I don’t like room because too small and they don’t have a bathroom. I’m really upset that.
The location was good, staff immediately helpful with parking info.
Designated parking would be helpful
Good location for what we wanted.
Dead flies in the bathroom, the bathroom door didn’t shut unless you forced it, the towels were awful and one was filthy and stained. The carpet was grubby. No staff on the bar, receptionist doubled up
Outside building
Very dated needs updated showers toilet
We spend two nights at the Muthu Westcliff hotel in July ,very clean room . Bathroom well equipped, toiletries replenished.every day .Staff very helpful. Tea ,coffee and biscuits replenished every day as well.
Local
Bathroom stank from drains and leaky shower head
Another great stay for a theatre visit. Lovely room. Clean and comfortable and staff always friendly and helpful. Perfectly located for the Cliffs Pavilion and great for a night away
The location is great. We stayed because we went to the theatre and it is a very short walk away. It is right on the seafront. The facilities are good, with a well equipped bar and rooms with fans. The breakfast was good.
The shower was not very powerful.
The mattresses were comfortable
Poor customer service as when we arrived the lady at the reception was rude instead of welcoming and also didn't find helpful that we had to lift our buggy up the stairs in the entrance and after found out they could have open a back door... The lift should be updated too (at least the indoor) because my partner burn his arm a bit with the indoor long lights on the corner of the lift.
The location
The staff were just average
I didn't actually want to write and post a poor review. I tried to email them directly but it bounced back as undeliverable. So here's what I wrote to them: Dear Muthu We stayed with you for 2 nights (checked out yesterday). I normally write reviews, but I won't on this occasion because it sadly would only be a 1 star. Your staff are welcoming and helpful, the bed linen and towels were lovely and clean. But that is where the positive ends. The rooms are tired, the bed was so uncomfortable, room 103 the bed was like sleeping on a marshmallow with lumps. The kettle had black bits inside, carpets badly stained, furniture worn. While I know you are one of the cheapest hotels in town, you are still not worth the money we paid. Such a shame as you are ruining the experience of a lovely view.
The staff were very friendly and helpful
The bed was only okay
Very convenient for the Cliffs Pavilion
Nothing
Good
Good
Great location & nice rooms
No aircon, there was a fan but it was pretty useless
Price and where it was - right on the front
Could of been cleaner cabinets were not to clean and very shabby Big room but mismatched furniture
Tea making facilities were ok.
Shower didn't work I told staff but they didn't fix it heat in the room was past 30 degrees. There is no shielding throughout the building so you can hear footsteps all the time I could even hear people urinating. Telly didn't work. Card access but old style switches. It reminded me of the Munsters mansion it has seen better says the floorboards sag under you feet as you walk you almost pray they will hold your weight. Crap lift. The bath was corroded and stained. The push down plug was broken. Rubbish plastic kettle. No aircon small windows. Located on npisy road. The hotel is too far away from amenities. I asked for partial refund they refused. The hotel looks nothing like it does in the photoshopped photo.
I like the location of the hotel. The decor is nice with a retro feel. Room was spacious and affordable. Hotel staff friendly and helpful.
The lift is quite small and old-fashioned.
Clean, some staff are still nice
Too much noise coming from the neighbours room and I informed staff they didn’t have any action
Room cleanliness, walk in shower comfort of bed
I had to change rooms due to the rooms being down lots of corridors. The shower was over the bath, which I can't manage safely. A lot of the windows were blown so you couldn't see out! The hotel is looking generally very tired. Very few staff trying to run reception, bar & kitchen, due to this the reception was unmanned for a lot of the time! Trying to find someone to help during the afternoon was a joke!
Location
Unclean, very dated
Good breakfast. Friendly staff in dinning room.
No toilet brush in bathroom. Stairs to climb with a luggage to first floor. It is a lift but to my room a slope and 3-4 stairs to arrive.
