Room was good, clean, comfortable. Could not get to a cable channel on the tv. Had significant trouble finding it in the dark-got there and found out the pool was already closed. Breakfast started too Late for us to have that.
It was very clean staff very friendly ..
The swimming pool was closed the airconditioner wasn’t Working. It was too warm And muggy in the room the staff lady brought fans which was nice I But 1 fan Stopped working after a while ,
Got to the hotel at 5:00 pm.Hotel was closed nobody was there.Didnt answer the phone.Had to sleep in my car.I want my money back.I will not stay in a Howard Johnson again, after driving 14 hours nothing and the other guys were disappointed beyond belief. To say this sucked was a under statement No notice no emails no nothing
This hotel was a huge disappointment , service was terrible , very unorganized . They left the lounge uncleaned after it was used we sat in it in filth; looked like the after math of a social.. they closed the bar/ restaurant and pool all by 9pm.. staff was seen drinking wine on the job. The fitness centre wasn’t available .. could never find anyone when needed anything whether it be check in or check out, to get a drink at the bar or order from the restaurant, it’s like nobody works here. The hot tub was cold, the water smelt like urine. Sleep in your car . Not worth the stay. My teenagers room is kept better then this hotel.
The property seemed very unkept. The rooms were clean enough. Heat was not working.
If you are traveling through hwy1 is a perfect stop. The hotel is quiet, has a nice restaurant open until 10pm. Also a breakfasts is included.
Love the restaurant
The bed was broken, no one responded to my message about it. If you put your weight near the top it literally flipped up. The walls had a lot of damage in the room. Overall it was an ok hotel for the price we paid, nothing fancy, but have definately seen worse.
This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Stains all over curtains and couches. Toilets were broken, breakfast was horrible ( beans and hot dogs). For the money we paid it was horrible.
Our stay at the Howard Johnson in Portage la Prairie was extremely disappointing. Upon entering the building, we were immediately hit with a strong, unpleasant odor that smelled like mold. There was no one at the front desk to check us in, and we had to go searching to find someone to assist us. When we finally got checked in, locating our room was a struggle. There was no clear signage or elevator to access the second floor, and when we asked for help, the staff member seemed just as confused as we were. The room itself was appalling, like something out of a horror movie. It was clear someone had attempted to repaint, but paint was sloppily smeared on fixtures and missing in places around the doors. The bathroom was in terrible condition with visible stains on the tub, shower wall, and toilet. To top it off, there were dead bugs on the window sill, which is completely unacceptable. The final straw was the pool. Both of my children ended up with rashes after using it, which raises serious concerns about its cleanliness and maintenance. (Pool staff came the last day we were there and said they should have been there days ago but it was busy so they put it off) Overall, this was one of the worst hotel experiences we’ve ever had. The property is poorly maintained, and the staff seemed ill-equipped to provide basic service. I would not recommend staying here to anyone.
Great location. The on-site restaurant was amazing. Delicious food, very generous portions, unbeatable prices and amazing service. Hard-working and kind staff. Also, breakfast was tasty. Fresh, hot and plentiful of food.
I wouldn’t stay here again even if it was free. When we got in they were doing pool maintenance which is fair, it happens… So the kids were disappointed right off the bat. When we checked into our room we realized after about an hour that our toilet was broken. The seat wasn’t attached and it wouldn’t flush. I went to front desk to tell them and they told me it would be another 1.5 hours for a room. This of course was annoying to us. The so called manager was SO rude to me to the point where I had to go get my husband to talk to him. He was of course wayyy more respectful to him. We went out for dinner and when we came home we got checked into another room. After swimming I came to the room to wash my face and realized our sink didn’t drain… the night hotel staff were wayyy nicer then the so called manager and they sent someone to come fix it. They didn’t fix it till about 10pm so we were able to finally go to bed. Morning breakfast was okay I guess… there was toast and cereal and it’s free so I guess I can’t complain. Next time I will spend the extra 50$ and go to Holiday Inn… I suggest everyone does the same.
♥️♥️
The outside doors
The staff, the room and especially that there's no hot water in the evening or in the morning to shower with
Was an unplanned stay as our usual hotels were booked but turned out to be a great experience, and we have now switched our designated destinations. Spot service was amazing and the food at the restaurant was top quality with affordable pricing.
Staff were amazing. Food was even better. I will stay here for all my work stays. Breakfast was free, 2 eggs hashbrown and toast and much more. Cerial muffins coffee etc. Loved it. Again staff were so friendly kind and accommodating.
The room itself was not bad. The neighbors seemed like they were locals staying there and were screaming and fighting. The staff could barely communicate in English. As in it took several tries to figure out what my reservation was! No heat in my room, it was only 58 degrees in there!! No point in asking the staff.... they don't speak english!!!
The lobbys smells and the bed are of bad quality
No stopper for tub, only one glass in the room, staff and their children very loud and noisy in hallway and common area, couldn’t control the heat in the room, very poor attempt for a continental breakfast. Restaurant food was good.
Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Located right off the hwy it was very convenient. I also liked that there was a restaurant where i could get a good meal after a long drive.
Very Friendly staff. Not a big deal, but the complimentary breakfast offer a great selection with cereals, juices/coffee, fruit, yogurt, toast eggs and hashbrowns....suprised no meat (bacon or sausage) Great value though Thank you
The staff was very helpful and approachable. Pool was an attraction for the little kids, breakfast was big and good. Location is good - near the Assiniboia spillway, a good destination for a little hike with kids in the fall foliage.
The water in the whirlpool in the pool area was not clean (while the pool and the hot-tub were good). There was only one chair in each room with two double beds.
The staff was friendly and helpful but the property was very rundown. Lights were kept off so it was darker than it should have been. There was a handwritten sign above the pay phones that said "$5 per ride" and had someone's phone number written. It felt very uncomfortable and unsafe.
Very friendly. Older building but very clean. Supper in the restaurant was really good.⁹
Entrance at back was not very inviting.
Property has not been updated in a long time, the heater didn't work.
convenient location, reasonable place, reasonable breakfast
The staff were excellent and extremely friendly and nice. Our meals were excellent and ample, and again very good and very friendly service
The hotel has recently been taken over, the carpets need renewing, some hallways require painting and all doors leading to the lower rooms require a good painting and weather stripping. The room which we were given had an air conditioner in the window, during a rain storm water came through the gaps around the air conditioner and onto the inner window seal, we used towels to mop up. I realize the property has been neglected and it will take time to bring everything up to par Overall a nice stay and would recommend
Restaurant late opening for breakfast
Rooms updated. Exterior, reception area and restaurant need updating.
Far too noisy
A nice stay, but the outside is still uninviting to look at - no flowers or nice areas to look at or hang out at. Fenced off area for "play" overrun with weeds and an eyesore to look at. Area around entrance to front desk full of rocks and weeds. Rooms by pool noisy.
The breakfast was not presented nice No eggs no yougout left and bread the girl walked in then left didn’t replaced. It was only 8 am The coffee was piping hot😊
A nice friendly atmosphere with helpful staff in a quiet location.
It was a very good location.
It’s a little dated. Since I travel with a dog I prefer hard floors rather then carpet.
Staff were good, rooms were Clean, definitely an older Building with on going maintenance happening
The hotel is tired and worn out!
I'm a regular here on long cross-Canada road trips, I love the location right beside the Trans-Canada, nice natural setting away from the town so your vehicle is safe from break-ins at night, it's an old building and could use some renos, needs new carpet, but it is run by good people doing their best and the room was very clean.
Food in the restaurant was fantastic. Had lunch and dinner in there Saturday and Sunday. kids loved the pool and the adults loved the lounge.
The original room I was offered was clean. The staff were helpful when my keycard did not work.
No one could fix the key card problem, and no one had the master key. I was offered another room that was dirty and had a broken lock. We waited for close to an hour and someone finally found the master key to get into the original room they offered. I declined to stay at this hotel and I am still waiting for a refund.
Room was dirty, site was run down, smelled funny. Food in restaurant was awful, worst poutine I’ve ever had. Multiple families living in the upstairs rooms like the place is also an apartment block. Got three hours sleep and left due to noise from the people that live there. Most of the rooms were empty or so bad no one could stay in them. I want my money back
When we arrived we did not get our King room reservation. We were put in a room with 2 double beds, they did not adjust our rate that we reserved under. They had to go take stuff for the tv from another room to get ours working. They have a full service resteraunt, but when we went to eat the place was closed for a private event with no notice. Rooms need some sprucing up, staff need some better training in dealing wit guests.
Pool
No air conditioning Blow dryer didn’t work the fridge froze our drinks The restaurant was booked for a private event (not told) Breakfast was cold Not worth how much I paid for my room
First hotel I have had to recommend not to stay at. Not well maintained at. No-one at reception desk to greet you. Had to go to find some one to check it. Room okay needs maintenance. Electric heater not even wall mounted. Wall paper coming off around the door and by the bed. One window boarded up with styrofoam? Not very safe. Breakfast hot menu - disgusting, mini hotdogs floating in water and scrambled eggs. Sorry but would not feed to a pet. No yogurts offered. No one at check out desk. Had to go find someone and not willing to wait so left card on counter. Surprised Wyndham would have name associated with it given that there was a microtel by Wyndham across the highway. We were not able to get a room there when booking which is why this hotel was a second choice. Sorry but need to spend some money on this hotel.
Would not recommend this place and surprised that Wyndham allows its name to be associated. Needs major work inside and out. No one at the reception desk to greet you. Had to walk around to find someone. Room okay but wall paper peeling around the door and wall by the bed, Electric heater not wall mounted!!!! One window blocked off with what appeared to be styrofoam!!! Not very safe. Hot continental breakfast was canned mini hot dogs floating in water and scrambled eggs!!! No yogurt. Fortunately we had purchased our own yogurt and travel with breakfast stuff just incase. When checking out again no one at the front desk, had to find someone gave up and left card on the counter. Hotel surroundings not that well maintained. Only reason we stayed there was because we were not able to get a room at the Microtel by Wyndham across the highway when we booked in January. I think if CEO’s went around to see there hotels they would hopefully make some serious changes to this hotels appearance and the way that it is run with respect to properly trained people.
Absolutely nothing and we rarely ever have written a bad review
The property was not clean and we are not judgemental or particular people!
Unique was that it is from 1970 with that still be the case. Bathroom kind of updated. Beds were ok but the rest is from 1970. Interesting smells and really no air movement in the rooms. No AC and missing tub drain plug so shower only. They are trying but a long way to go before they are up to a standard of minimum expectations. The art work was from at least open as it has not changed from when I was a little person who had birthday parties in there. 45 years ago. No joke. Exact same pics. Restaurant is all pre-made items from Sysco as it is also the same stuff as served at the hospital in items. Some staff tried others were not sure why they worked there.
Internet poor
The staff was very kind and considerate. We ordered pizza and it was very good. The property could use a refresh, it seems a bit run down.
We were in Portage for a kids baseball tournament and stayed at this hotel, unfortunately the musty smell, AC not working in our room, hotel room door does not swing closed for safety purposes and just lack of overall cleanliness. This is an absolute no for us in the future, they should also consider their clientele that wonders around and sits outside, there was definitely an unsafe feeling and weird activity in and around the hotel.
They charged my card even though I didn't make there that night, and had to stay somewhere else that night. I was shuttling a small school bus from Toronto ON to Edmonton AB and it ended up taking longer than expected/hoped to get from where I was that day to this hotel.
It was outdated, no AC in the rooms, nail in the hot tub, seen a fight, the power went out for the whole day and was the hottest day so far. Did not compensate or give me money back. No replying to my emails. Very unprofessional.
It was great. The front worker was very nice and polite.
Jacuzzi did not work, restaurant and service was great
Roof leaked on my grandson when he slept. Terrible will never stay there afain
bad check-in, no emergency lights in hallways, I will never recommend this hotel to anyone, never stay here
The hotel was far out of the way ,it was noisy, kids yelling loudly and running around, the hot tub wasn’t working, the pool was cold and you had to walk to the front desk for towels . In the morning the kids were wanting to swimming befor breakfast but were told to get out of the pool as it wasn’t open till 10 am , an hour before checkout so the kids didn’t get to enjoy the pool , the main reason we booked at that hotel … never again and I don’t recommend that hotel .
The food was amazing and the room was ok, no bathroom fan, the hot tub was not working and no AC. You could tell they were working on improving things.
Lots off room for dogs
Nothing
This Howard Johnson's Hotel in Portage La Prairie is worth a second look! It has been recently taken over by Howard Johnson's and the staff is working very hard to make upgrades to this older hotel. The possibilities are incredible with the lovely layout of this building and indoor pool. The new restaurant, "La Prairie", has exceptional food with lovely table decorations. The Chicken Caesar Salad was fresh, delicious, and the portion very generous! The rooms were clean and pet friendly, and there was expansive outdoor space for your pet to run and get some exercise after a long car ride. Arsh, the receptionist at the front desk, was most helpful and polite, making sure that your stay was everything you had hoped it would be. Would I stay here again...absolutely! Sarah Berry
Nice plac
Breakfast was minimal but sufficient. Excellent dining room staff and service
The place itself was very run down, I thought that it was closed. Check in was nice and friendly, then we were told that the Restaurant and Bar was closed due to 2 private parties. All we wanted to do was have supper, a few drinks and watch the first game of the stanley cup playoffs. Had to go into town for that. Even though quiet time started at 11pm, it was very noisy at 10pm, we did phone down and complained and they did shutdown the party early. This was enough to never return. FYI - they should fix up the outside to make it inviting
The people were extremely friendly. Room was very clean and very comfortable. It’s under new ownership and they are in the process of updating the inside and outside. As first impressions driving up has no curb appeal. Room was good though. Big storm, power went out, fire alarms went off in middle of the night. They were on top of it…..but, hydro guys working overtime in whole area, therefore no power this morning. No fault of their own. We would go back again.
'
It was a port in a storm and it did all I wanted
Seemed short staffed but the staff there was excellent
the building is old. Smells weed everywhere in the building. rooms smells like moldy..we feel unsafe and disgusting pool
The breakfast was great, large portions and good waitress.
This hotel was in a state of disrepair. The toilet didn't flush, they came and fixed it, but it still didn't work. The fridge was broken.... there were ceiling tiles that had water damage. The garbage from the hotel was left outside during the spring without being contained in a rural area. Not bear smart at all, and this put the guests at risk. I will never stay here again!
Nothing It was so bad and not clean at all. We had no choice staying there because all hotel were booked.
Nothing
The clean sheets & cover. The staff were very good. The complimentary breakfast was good.
The swimming pool water was cold. The hot tub jets were not working and the water wasn't hot enough.
Pleasant staff, clean and quiet room, nice that there was a small sofa.
The building exterior was in need of new paint and a good cleaning/raking around the property.
Had no running hot water, room was so dirty and not ready for check in..pool area unsafe so we left and i would like a refund
Was good a bit outdated
The room was smelly and their was water dripping out of the ceiling
Tv didn’t work, hot tub jets or heat didn’t work. Stains all over furniture, no pool towels, didn’t give me any of my Wyndham points. Employee was pleasant but not able to help much. the building needs major updates as multiple leaks all over. Was once an nice hotel but decrepit now
Quiet, friendly, stuff willing to help you you
The restaurant was amazing, every meal we had was unbelievable. The staff was amazing. All around a very nice weekend I highly recommend this Hotel
We booked a room with a queen bed, and recieved 2 double beds so my spouse and i slept separately both nights. The first night was so unbearably hot neither of us could sleep, they eventually switched us the next day after multiple attempts of complaining. The pool was a little chilly, but the hot tub was ice cold sometimes which was annoying. There was no information about how to reach the front desk, or that you have to order the complimentary breakfast at the front desk either....so that was inconvenient. Plus they are severely understaffed, and 2 people ran the entire hotel. And now I'm being charged an extra $200 after already paying close to $300 for a mediocre stay at best.
We had a great experience. The inside of the hotel is decent for the age. Staff was extremely friendly and our family enjoyed the time at the pool and the guest common area. There is some aesthetic upgrades that could be made but the experience was really good
Ill prepared hotel staff, dirty and smelly hallway and room. Would not return. From start to finish, nothing seemed to work. Key card didn't work, couldn't pay with their machine, had to do it manually, putrid smell in the hallway, garbage and garbage bags in hallway, walls cracked and peeling everywhere. Finishing touch was a fire exit door being bolted shut..
Worst hotel I've experienced. Checked in at 2:00 AM, the guy at the desk had a bad attitude and seemed inconvenienced to look up my reservation. He showed me to my room and made sure to pop his head in the door before I could see to make sure the room was actually ready/available. The room appeared to not have been occupied for months, dead lady bug on one bed, stains on the sheets of the other bed. I tried everything to turn on the heater, eventually set it as high as it would go and went to sleep hoping the thermostat would kick on at some point. It was -25 outside so very cold in the room, January 12th. I woke up at 6:00am very cold, even with double bed sheets from the one i wasn't using. Decided to leave at 6:00am and nap in my heated truck. The same desk guy from the night before was confused by the premature departure, so I told him it was awful, mainly due to the lack of heat. He blamed the cold weather for the cold room. I explained that the heater is supposed to work to warm the room up, then he blamed me for not coming up to get him to look at it. I explained it was 2:30 am and I just wanted to go to sleep, and that a heater should work before a room is given to a customer. There was no offer of a room upgrade or refund, although he did offer a cup of coffee from a neglected automatic coffee machine. Sleep in your car before you stay here. They shouldn't be in business
They didn’t remove the snow in the yard till 11:30am there were 3 ft snow drift across the yard so I was stuck there all morning and was late for business meetings not like it was a surprise storm it was January in Canada!
