Breakfast was good. Strolling past the shops on the road across from the beach was relaxing.
The size of our room. It seems as I'd the bathroom was added at a later date which perhaps took away from the functuality of the room. I wasn't impressed with the dinner menu although the room set up was nice.
Det var lækkert og flot
Morgenmaden var skuffende
Nice location in Viareggio. Lovely old world glamour feel to it. Friendly reception and bar staff. Great pool
Mattress very hard. Very limited sound proofing in the room - we were kept awake until 2:30am for 2 nights out of 5 due to outdoor parties on the front. Restaurant was unwelcoming and poor quality food for a four star hotel. Need to improve fire evacuation procedures- a false alarm one night was not managed well.
Top service from all staff, Heritage, lovely gardens and pool, location, sea view from room

Esperienza fantastica, struttura elegante, colazione top

Very grand and overall great location. Loved the breakfast and service of the people around
Great location lovely building close to the Beach nice pool and good poolside lunch
Beds were hard no water pressure at all really terrible

The hotel is beautiful, and every detail has been thought through. The bathrooms are equipped with everything necessary for people with varying needs, the bed linens are spotless, and the cleaning and accommodations are top-notch! But the most important thing is the staff—the people who work there. I want to thank receptionist Andrea and Yuliia, a special thank you to the breakfast staff Mauricio and Serena , in the pool Giuseppe and the evening bar Nicola. You made my vacation feel like home! I was able to not only relax, but feel as comfortable as possible! I also want to highlight the hotel grounds, which include a small, beautiful, green garden. It's so cozy, safe, and peaceful that I could even meditate. Thank you for my vacation!
I'd like to point out that all the food is high-quality and delicious!! The only thing I would change is to add variety to the breakfasts, for example, fried eggs instead of just boiled ones, and add boiled turkey or chicken for protein in the morning. It would be great to see Sliced tomatoes, not just cherry tomatoes. I'd add 2-3 types of lettuce and greens with some additional ingredients. And reduce the number of packaged snacks.
Excellent beachfront location. The pool is an added bonus which made us book here instead of another hotel

Staff were amazing! Great food and very clearly labelled for allergies - my boyfriend has a severe nut allergy and was able to eat confidently! Pool was great, food at pool was also lovely. Our room was fab, large, clean and had a great view!
Location fantastic ! Walk to everywhere and convenient. Grand hotel with a beautiful atmosphere. Sea view room with balcony was lovely and spacious with good amenities and kept immaculate the whole time. Pool was the best so very big and beautiful gardens around the pool area. Lots of beds to accommodate everyone. Delicious lunch by the pool side as well. Breakfast was amazing with so many options. Barbara was the most attentive server, she was always very friendly , helpful and clearly loves her job as she was so lovely went the extra mile to please. Grazie Mille Look for to a return visit soon

This is a fabulous hotel with a lovely atmosphere and excellent staff.- about 20 mins from the main rail station in the town where you can get trains to Pisa (20 mins) Lucca ( 20 mins and Florence (1 1/2 hours). The beach is opposite but the hotel has a great pool with plenty of sunbeds. There is a huge market along the ppromenade every Thuirsday. The food was exellent and dietry isues are not a problem as gluten-free and lactose-free are simply provided as a mattr of course. The ambience is great- no entetainment but cocktails, canapes and drinks seved before dinner and lounges for coffee after dinner- not a hotel for children but wonderful for couples, grown up families and friends
What a wonderful stay we had at this hotel. Everything was perfect! The staff are friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make sure your holiday is relaxing and amazing. The place is spotlessly clean, our room was immaculate and felt very luxurious, spacious and authentic with its beautiful floor and Juliette balcony. The food is excellent, and Gluten free was catered for with plenty of choice. All cooked and presented beautifilly. We loved the pool bar, and although we didn't use the pool, it looked lovely. We chose to use the beach and as part of the hotel package, we had 2 deck chairs, parasol and sunlounger on the beach. The beach is stunning, mountain views and lovely for a swim. Even though we were on the front with a sea view and the road in front, it was peaceful, we had shutters on the window so noise from the road wasn't an issue. Easy access to a huge park, and a 15-20 minute walk to the train station which we used for visits to Pisa and Lucca. Thank you to everyone at the hotel for looking after us.
The location is everything! very well positioned to the beach and in rather more affluent part of the first raw. Breakfast was unusually creative and full on for Italians, who known to have expresso and cornetto for breakfast. My room was not with the sea view. it was looking out to the garden and as I was on the 4th floor my view was mountains. I think i would choose this room again as i think it was peaceful and serine.
I liked everything but the price. But it is not a hotel issue, its mine. I just have to earn more.
Everything
Stayed here for a week in late June and early July 2026 after wanting to visit Italy for several years, and I thought that this hotel on the Versillia coast in Tuscany would suit me well, and boy it did. Having come at the tail end of Europe's worst ever heatwave, which had even spread to Viareggio I was very relieved to find that the hotel is fully air conditioned, which in our ever warming climate is surely a nessicity. The entire hotel feels like you've stepped in a time machine and arrived in the 1920s. Hercule Poirot was never a real person, but even he would have enjoyed this in the same way that the former Edward VIII & Wallis Simpson did. As you arrive and settle in,you could be fooled into thinking you've accidentally stepped into a seaside hotel in one of England's renowned resorts like Weymouth or Scarborough, and yet you have to remind yourself, you're in the EU, and you're on the Versillia coast, and it's overwhelming to realise that every detail is as it would be in Britain. It definitely has the feel of a stately home all round the hotel, they literally roll out the red carpet for everyone, and it's shown, especially on the first floor. You literally feel a bit like an A-Lister here. The town itself is absolutely beautiful and again you might be fooled slightly that you're in England, and then you see all the nearby mountains. The beach is wonderful too, and has more sand than most UK beaches There are there different options for meals, and they're all served in different settings. Contrary to belief, the dining room is only used for breakfast and dinner is served outside (although I did visit in the height of summer so I expect both main meals are served in the same room during the spring and autumn), lunch is also available at the pool bar, and serves full meals which I was surprised about, and partook it in twice. The kitchen therefore is a largeley 24 hour a day operation, and it's possible that you don't have to leave the confines of the hotel to eat. Therefore for most or the day there is some sort of bar service. If it's not the pool bar open from 12pm til 18:30, it's the main hotel bar open from 19.00 til late. Contary to some belief you actually don't need swimming caps at this hotel(but assuming that you're wanting to visit one of the beach clubs, you do, the GHR pool is a private, not public pool). I also took advantage of the use of the two deckchairs and the sun lounger at the partner Bagno Annita club over the road, and ate at it too. The breakfast choices are out of this world and you have to ask the waiting staff to make hot drinks for you, but they'll honour any request you have. I can confirm what other reviews have said, assuming you're staying Saturday to Saturday, at the first buffet dinner( A la carte only six nights a week) you are assigned a table, and that remains your dinner table for the entire week. I also loved the fact that for half board guests at breakfast a waiter comes to your table and takes your order for your two courses, Desert is ordered after you have completed your second course. It can help you decide what to have for your lunch that day, which in Viareggio is covered for you.All of which is the best hotel food I've ever consumed, and is a culinary reflection of Tuscany. Make sure that you also take advantage of the gelaterias in the city, especially the one as you cross the road in the left direction, if gelato is your thing Meanwhile the rest of the GHR staff are so professional in what they do, from the friendly bartender, to the hotel porters who take in your luggage and deliver it to your room as soon as you've checked in, they put your luggage in a holding room and you're invited to swim in the pool whilst you wait for check in time at 2pm. They're all well proficient in English, but I reckon they must also know a little German or French, many nationalities come to this hotel, and I heard German and Scottish accents during my stay, and it's easy to see why. I didn't use the room service myself, nor did I once feel the need to call reception from my room, but that service is available to you, should you need it. I've never stayed in a more spacious hotel room, and is much bigger than most UK bedrooms, and the marble floor is very detailed, I think this is the same in nearly all the bedrooms. The WiFi is brilliant for a hotel of its size, and it's rather fast, perfect for those that want to stream their favourite shows abroad (if your streamer allows it to be viewed in Italy) There is a fully stocked minibar(unlike most bars of its type it's free to take, meaning that you record any consumptions on the form that is provided and pay up at checkout) but I'd strongly advise you to leave the items as they are, you are free to fill up the remaining space in the fridge as you wish, or take out all the items and replace them when you vacate), there are at least three convenience stores in town, and for those of you driving or are willing to take a bus or taxi, two large supermarkets, for snacks or souvenirs, there's also a bigger supermarket in the next town of Lido di Caimaiore. Bus links are very plentiful and took very good advantage of it, the staff keep bus timetables if you are interested in catching one and they'll also impart some important information about them Until just a few years ago, this was one of the O&O hotels under the Best Western brand, and should tell you, that dropping it was the best decision your management has made, because it's much too nice to be a Best Western, it's got that independent fancy feel about the place, and it's just not your usual hotel, it's a perfect holiday hotel, it feels like it too I'd definitely advise you to look into investing in Nespresso machines for every room, and look into investing in a smart TV for every room. Otherwise the stay was truly faultless, and I will be returning some day, maybe a little earlier or later in the year than June when it can be too hot for regular touring. This city is very underrated in the minds of Brits wanting to come to Italy, but it should definitely be on your radar.
Grand old-style hotel. Friendly helpful staff. Great location.
Beautiful garden and pool. Room far more spacious than I expected. Nice property with character. Friendly check in, very helpful in arranging an airport transfer.
Bedding not comfortable (mattress good but pillows and blanket were awful and didn’t sleep well) I wanted to dine at the hotel but restaurant was full. Hotel could use a little layer of refreshing and improvement given how beautiful the property is, but I didn’t mind it (except for the jet2holidays poster by the lift 😑)
Amazing as always...we have been staying at this hotel every year since our Silver Wedding Aniversary in 1996..... We also travel to Australia, America, Europe and Asia but always back to The Grand Hotel Royal. That says it all. VG
the hotel was a traditional old standard hotel with excellent staff and you feel looked after. great pool area and close to everything .
i wouldn't criticise
Excellent breakfast options. Staff attentive and welcoming. Catered for vegans and gluten free with no issues.
Hard to fault anything.
We travelled with our daughter. She had a single room and we had a double room with limited sea view. This hotel delivers in every way. Charming and helpful reception staff greeted us . We had to wait until 2pm for our room so grabbed our swimsuits and headed to the beautiful garden and pool area. The pool is large and well kept. The pool bar offers a good menu of salads, sandwiches and pizza and the staff were very accommodating. The rooms were large and decorated to suit the decor of the hotel . The bathroom large and very clean. Our breakfast experience was so relaxing. Fantastic choice of continental and eggs and bacon etc if you fancied something more substantial. Even a fresh waffle and pancake makers. The evening meal comprised of 4 courses. Entree of salads and small dishes, starter, main course and desert. We are vegetarian so was concerned but throughly enjoyed the food. They even prepared a pasta dish for us one evening as we’re not keen on the veggie choices. The staff at breakfast and dinner were so lovely . Special mention to Andrea who made us laugh each night. We went to the sea for a swim a couple of days . The hotel has an arrangement with a private beach owner opposite. You can use the sunbeds and the facilities if this is your thing. The resort is very relaxed. Market on a Thursday . We went Pisa by train . The station is about a 20 min walk from the hotel. It was very hot when we were there so we chose to use a private company for our days trip to Florence . It was arranged by the hotel reception and was absolutely brilliant. Walking tour with a lovely lady called Tania. Eur169 each. We had the best week here in this relaxed by beautiful hotel. Would definitely recommend for adults and children

The pool, service and breakfast was amazing
Stayed here for 7 nights at the beginning of May . Great location on the prommenade and just 20 min walk to the station to go to pisa, lucca, florence and cinque terre . Can't fault anything , rooms were great and quite glad we stayed half board as the evening meal was quality every night with service to match . Didn't spend much time around the pool but looked a nice little area . The lobby bar and service was excellent . All in all a great base to explore the northern end of Tuscany .
Our first time at then Grand Hotel Royal and having read all the wonderful reviews, I’m pleased to say that it lived up to expectations! All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Matilde in reception spent a lot of time with us providing us with bus times to and from Pietrasanta and train times to/from Lucca and Firenze. We had a partial sea view room on the side of the hotel (room 110) which had a small balcony just large enough for two chairs and a table. The room was spacious with a huge double bed! It was quiet with virtually no noise from the promenade road at the front of the hotel. The hotel is immaculate and very traditional with tiled floors an impressive wide staircase and beautiful high ceilings in every room - it is grand in every respect! Breakfast was amazing - everything you could want from waffles, pancakes, yoghurts, fruit etc to sausages, bacon and scrambled eggs! Evening meal was also excellent with several choices every day. Included in the Jet2 package was a sunbed, two deck chairs and a parasol on the sandy beach opposite the hotel. That said, we spent more time at the pool area which had a large pool and an excellent pool bar for afternoon beer and/or cocktails (it also served food). All in all the hotel was as good as it gets and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
Consigliatissimo!
This was our second visit and we knew it wouldn’t disappoint. We went with friends this time who instantly fell in love with the Grand Dame of Viareggio. Room spotless we didn’t have a sea view this time, purely on the basis I am a poor sleeper and the side rooms I thought were quieter, top marks to the lady that did our room. Breakfast delicious and plentiful, dinner delicious. And the waiters and waitresses are on point. Thank you Alexandro,Stefano , Micheal and Serena huge thank you. Pool perfect, spotless, great pool bar and staff. Hi Guiseppie so helpful and hard working. Aminta Beach bar is spotless the girls in the bar/restaurant are lovely. Comfy sunbeds and so peaceful. The Bar… no words it’s a hub where people meet up. With the best cocktails we’ve had since our trip to the Ritz of course made by the super talented Nicola and the lovely lady that’s with him on the bar. Nicola is the guy that keeps people from going out in the evening!! his charisma is infectious. The bar area has a charming atmosphere where you meet people and make new friends. The hotel have wonderful staff and the manager looks after them, it’s their superpower. Thank you and see you soon x
The central location to the promenade and beaches was good. The 25 m pool was a HUGE bonus - it was much nicer to lounge at the pool than at the beach, where all beach chairs and umbrellas were available to rent (the norm in most of Europe), and also having to deal with vendors hawking their wares and massages being offered (so not as peaceful at the beach as at the pool). The property is large and has lots of comfortable places to sit/lounge, not all at the pool. The breakfast buffet is wonderful. The staff were all friendly and very helpful.
We had a lovely, large suite, with a not so large bathroom that had a tub shower with a handheld (long-handled) shower head that did not sit properly in the holder - so awkward to shower. However, that was just a very minor inconvenience. The rest of the property is AMAZING!
Just returned from a most enjoyable stay at the Grand Royal Room as per usual in Italy not the largest but spotlessly clean and comfortable with balcony overlooking the beach As others have said even though we were on 4th floor was quite noisy at times We were on half board -breakfast was the usual varied assortment The evening meal was excellent which was basically a four course meal with buffet to start and then three courses which was ordered at breakfast Could not fault the standard it was excellent throughout Prices for wine very reasonable about 20 euros for a nice Tuscan bottle of white The pool was one of the best we have experienced and sun beds were always available The staff were excellent in particular the bar and pool bar guys and reception staff always helpful

magnifico, first stayed here in 2021 and have been back each year , sometimes twice in a year , Absolutely love this hotel , staffs , and area.... we now find it difficult to holiday anywhere else , staff always helpful , from reception , bar , restaurant, breakfast , pool area .......just love it , even kept an item we left in our last room and saved it for our return 2 months later ...food is outstanding for breakfast and evening in the outside restaurant .... see you all soon .. paul

It is stunning, we felt so comfortable and happy here. A very clean and well situated hotel
Nothing - if I had to say one thing is that maybe a little more option of food and drink at the pool bar
Ein echtes Grand Hotel. Historisches Bauwerk und Zimmer. Toller Service.

Very friendly staff We were given a room upgrade with a direct view of the beach. In our opinion the most beautiful hotel in Viareggio
TB
Beautifully maintained, clean and spacious hotel. Superb food and bar service. The staff worked very hard and were always very polite and helpful. The front desk staff were very helpful in helping us to plan out excursions and giving us advice. Spotlessly clean rooms, as was the whole hotel. Lovely well maintained pool area. Would definitely recommend this hotel and consider staying there again.
Something out of a dream, like waking up in Downton Abbey, but with modern conveniences. We stayed in room 318, with a full view of the Ligurian Sea and a private balcony. Fresh robes every day, tile floors, and attention to every detail. The staff wear three-piece suits with ties, and attend to everything a person might want. There's a huge swimming pool, with comfortable seating and a poolside bar that serves lunch. The breakfast buffet was an endless affair, with separate tables for sweets, fruits, cheeses, meats, eggs, cereals, real honeycomb, jams, anything a person could imagine. We ate dinner out, but the menu looked wonderful and there was often a pianist. One of the best hotels we've stayed anywhere in the world. This is a place to leave your cares behind you, and discover your best self.
Colazione ottima
Andava tutto bene
Great location and depending on room type, seaviews. The weather was still too cold for beach visits and the clubs were all still closed, but I imagine as the season picks up the location will be even better. Having parking onsite was a great bonus too.
Staff gentilissimo e molto disponibile. Un signor 4 stelle!
We stayed half board for 3 nights over a weekend. Firstly, the staff were exceptional. So helpful and pleasant. The food was also very good with a choice of pasta, meat and fish dishes in the evening, served in a large, elegant dining room. One of the big selling points of this hotel is it's excellent pool area and surrounding gardens. It was so peaceful and relaxing. The rooms were quite large and very clean, although maybe slightly dated. One negative would be the noise of the traffic, which was, at times, disruptive despite us being on the 5th (top) floor.
Location e vista lago magnifica.

Stanza e bagno grandi dotati e corredati benissimo. Colazione ottima e molto varia.
