Provider-sourced guest reviews.
Lovely, large, airy and comfortable standard twin room. Good breakfast, bar food is excellent and all the staff are very friendly and helpful. Ample free parking. Easy walk into Harrogate town centre. Third visit to the hotel and it didn’t disappoint.
Short on power points - one for TV, one for kettle and one other, all along the same wall. Can only assume it’s because of the age of this fabulous old building.
A beautiful property
Very tired in need of some investment
Location was great for visiting Harrogate.
Outdated, worn out. Damp and mould coming through most walls and ceilings
Nothing very disiponited
My bed hadn't been changed my sheet and the mattress protector had all stains and the manger does not care even with photo sent
Plenty of room for parking. Dogs allowed
The roadworks on the roads all around. It made access to the hotel difficult. Not the fault of the hotel, just the contractors!
Clean room excellent breakfast
lack of draught beer
Overall thought Breakfast was poor the cooked items generally were overcooked not enough selection on the continental offering service was excellent

Breakfast was really good. Location was very good.
We were not happy with our first room allocation 210. It was noisy and did not seem to be a Superior Room. After asking to change rooms, we were pleased with the room given 333.
Central ‘location free parking
Nothing
Location is perfect, room was very tired and dated , lots of paint coming off the walls that hadn’t been vacuumed up before the start of our break. The television is so small it is impossible to watch . Internet is very poor too. Our break included a fire alarm at night which was a little unnerving. On the positives, staff all very pleasant, beds comfortable and a quiet room.
stayed many times we had the same room as last time was very nice
rooms need updating walk in showers would be good but good value
Breakfast very good choices. Staff attentive and welcoming. Location central to the town with nice walks. Very near to RHS Harlow Carr. Well worth a visit!
All spot on!
Breakfast was good and plentiful. Room was a good size.
A little noisy, people shouting at 2am. Live music quite loud in room. Deco a little worn.
Food and staff were lovely.
WiFi coud have been much better.
Lovely stay .
Location is very good with free parking which is excellent around Harrogate. Breakfast was good. Staff who we met were friendly.
Hotel is a little tired but ok for our needs.
It was close to where we wanted to stay with good parking and reasonable price.
The standard of food has gone down. No croissants for breakfast or rolls. Very inferior fish and chips at the bar. Disappointing tuna sandwich.m
Breakfast was ok. Reasonable choice. Plates were nicely hot. I hate hot food on a cold plate. Staff on the bar and at reception were friendly and helpful.
The shower curtain which stuck to you was a nuisance. Out room needed a refurbish. Several cracked floor tiles, aged wallpaper. The whole hotel needed bringing up to date in our opinion.
Location and parking excellent.
Had a bar meal. Poor. Chicken stir fry not as described. Fish and chips small in size. More batter than fish.
Lovely staff good breakfast
It's an old building which is fine . Some of the areas in need redecorating. WiFi not great
Location Staff Food Large room and bathroom
Internet connection very slow
Friendly staff good location.
Towels were dirty, toothpaste stains, old hairs
The building itself. Although ceilings needed repairing and doors etc needed repainting.
Nowhere to park on our second day, although we'd payed for parking. The man on the desk, (manager?), on our first day talking to us abruptly and as if he was reading from a book of rules. The cooked breakfast was rubbery as if it'd been standing on a hotplate for some time.
The Cairn Hotel was handy for getting into Harrogate on the bus.
Hotel & rooms very dated, looked nothing like the pictures online, furniture in the rooms old & faded, bed uncomfortable, room smelt fusty. Noisy in a morning with the delivery trucks at 6am! Bar ran out of Peroni & no bacardi!! Fire alarm going off at 9.30pm for no reason!
Excellent breakfast.
Room quite small and shower curtain too close over bath (and I'm not overweight).
Shocking Evet
Evetything
Value for money & great location. Lovely hotel. Fresh and tasty breakfast.
Smelt fusty everywhere. We knew it was an old hotel, but really needs air fresheners. The room was SO hot! No aircon (yes, we understood an older hotel) but the windows wouldn't open and no fans. We couldn't sleep very well.
Perfect location for walking in to town.
The bedroom restaurant and stairs were looking tired.
Check in was smooth with helpful staff. Good location , lots of car parking and good choice at breakfast. Good sized bedroom and bathroom
Hotel could do with an coat of paint outside, external appearance slightly disappointing. Yes it's a large hotel and slightly tired. Large entrance lounge / lobby smelt of cigarettes. Room was decent size with two single beds, they obviously never get moved when the room is vacuumed as we pushed them together and found all sorts from where they had been. One of the bed pillows had a stain on it , which was visible throw the pillow case ..maybe a protector would elevate this ? Paid £145 for a twin room on a Saturday night incl breakfast, make your own mind up if this is good value ?
It’s location
Slightly run down
The location, the down stairs and hall
Husband in wheelchair , put us in a room with a step into bathroom so had to change rooms,I did phone the hotel directly to inform them of his disability the room was tight for his chair, and when we left the room I had to move skips outside of our door so that was a fire risk, the linen ect stores were next to our room so wasn't really the staffs fault ,we were in room 212 ,second floor
Brilliant location, easy 10 - 15 min walk into Harrogate up incline, so close to valley gardens, bathed & resturants ect also parking allocated at hotel
Room was a little dated, could do with painting, and bathroom updating, maybe tv fixed to wall too
Location
A foreign male member of staff attempted to enter my room without knocking, luckily I had the chain on the door. I had just got out of the shower, when questioned he said he was just checking I was ok! He had no reason to enter the room as it has already been serviced. I addressed this with the Manager who was flippant and unconcerned. The actual words she said was “Don’t worry Sir, nobody was going to rape you” suggesting it would have been a different story had I been a Female, in this day and age it is absolutely unacceptable and I am utterly convinced that this was not a housekeeping spot check on my room as later suggested. I spend a quarter of the year in Hotels all over the UK and it’s clear that lessons have not been learnt at the Cairn Harrogate from the recent press in connection to another chain. I would strongly urge anyone booking this Hotel to proceed with EXTREME caution.
Location was good as I attended a function in the town which was only a 10 minute walk away.
The whole hotel was looking rather "tired". It could really do with a fresh paint job.
Breakfast was ok
Staff especially on arrival we were asked to give approx time of arrival which we gave because we were 1 hour late due to traffic well 4.5 hours drive turned into over 6 hours we even got a call from the hotel asking do we still require our room seemed strange then on arrival were told our double room was not available only a twin room which was not ideal as booked well in advance then the problems started with the staff stated we can give a £30 discount which we didn’t even ask for only the room we booked he seemed he was doing us a favour considering twin room would of been around £30 difference in price to a double kept saying good offer take it or leave it to be honest thought he was on something was getting louder and louder and could not keep still when talking to us and kept referring to my wife as my love which is very un professional all we wanted is what we booked then we just needed to freshen up and sleep the twin room was horrendous a number of problems but didn’t tell anyone due to the previous encounter we just had to make the most of a bad situation especially as now gone 22:30 will be following this stay with there head office
The staff were helpful
The first room we were in had mould on the inside of the shower curtain. The staff were quick to replace it. The window didn't shut and the bathroom door didn't close. There was no socket close to the bed. We were moved to a smaller room which had a socket but the curtains were ripped and hanging off the rail. We left after one night of our anticipated 3 night stay. The whole building is in a state of disrepair.
Excellent historic building full of period features and grandeur. The communal areas such as the breakfast room, entrance foyer and the stainglass windows by stairs were excellent,
The rooms were a little bit tired, i.e floorboards very creaky, door lock could be smoother. The beds were very firm
We liked the location, apart from the walk up the hill. The free parking was a bonus, and the breakfast was much improved from the last time we stayed.
The walls and ceilings were tired looking but overall, good value for money.
Great location for what we needed.
Taking you debit card number even when you’d paid. Not explaining why and just saying it will have been on my booking but still not explaining what it was for. The rooms needs an overall. Bathroom window wouldn’t open so would have been boiling if it has been any warmer. The carpets were very warn in places. No iron or ironing board in room as stated on website. The lock wasn’t very secure and alarming that you are warned not to leave anything of value in your room as no safe. A lovely hotel but needs some money spending on it.
I liked the staff they were friendly and nothing was too much of a hassle for them.and the location.
The building needs a serious make over dirty carpets, corridors falling to bits, squeaky floor boards uncomfortable beds and dead spiders stuck in door frames.
Thos hotel i use regularly, and have fund memories, my late wife enjoyed the atmosphere, the staff are pleasant and are so helpful 😀 😊, great team, will go the extra mile the manager young man. Graft well,he works in the restaurant and bar and alway mortavages his team,no issues what so ever, the cairns is the best hotel in Harrogate as far as im concerned
The good, the staff, and the accommodation, the bed was so comfortable great 👍
The hotel is just perfect, meets every need. Has a very nice feel to the whole place, its old but very well kept, breakfast very good also.
A regi epulet stilusa miatt nagyon hangulatos.
A szemelyzet furcsa volt. Sose mosolyogtak es nem tul kedvesek.
Location was very good, breakfast was good
Extremely old fashioned and room was quite dirty. Evening meal was poor. WiFi was non existent.
Location
No grab rail in Bath to get in and out of the shower
The wifi was abismal
Clean & comfy rooms, fridndly staff.
Is on hill top, hard for disabled to get up & down unless bus is used, bus stop outside hotel though.
Central to town
Large room
Very welcoming, clean, comfortable hotel in an excellent location with ample parking, a short walk into the town centre, Room & bathroom very clean, nice crisp bedlinen & a good nights sleep. Staff very polite, friendly & helpful. Tasty bar meal & breakfast very good. Good value & would go back.
Location very good. Liked the character of the Victorian building.
Paintwork a little tired in places.
The breakfast was excellent with very good service and plenty of choice. The room was adequate but was cold, however a heater was soon provided when I mentioned it to the receptionist. The twin beds were comfortable and room service was very good. The car park was spacious providing free parking. The hotel is located within easy walking distance to the city shops, plus a good bus service into the city bus station if required. We had a very nice five nights stay and would book this hotel again.
The fact that our radiator wasn't working. The electric sockets were difficult to access because the furniture was placed in front of them.
Very helpful and friendly staff. Very quiet room and great location. Lovely Victorian feel to the hotel in general.
The cooked breakfast was not great, I couldn't finish the sausage as it tasted strange. The bacon didn't seem cooked. There could have been more plug sockets in the bedroom.
Free parking and close to centre Bag of crisps in room !
Looked a bit tired in public areas Kettle in room has plug lead fixed so had to move it complete with dangling lead into bathroom to fill. Also kettle took so long to boil , I forgot I had switched it in. No USB charging ports Three tea bags only in a suite room
The room was quiet overnight
It's a very large, old and shabby building. Probably cold in winter.
The history of the hotel and the location
The rooms to small and dated
Great location, around a 10-minute walk from the railway station and close to the high street. The hotel looks nice from the outside and the room was a reasonable size for one person. Nice breakfast
The rooms are quite dated and the TV was extremely small. The main issue was the very poor Wi-Fi, which made it impossible for me to do any work. Mobile signal inside the hotel was also weak. When I raised this at reception, I was told that as the Wi-Fi was free, nothing could be done and I could sit downstairs near the router. I found this disappointing, as reliable Wi-Fi is a basic amenity nowadays. Had I known this beforehand, I would not have booked this hotel for a work trip.
Location is great, central and plenty of parking on site
Very dated. Shower was tiny and basic. Food was appalling (breakfast) and overpriced. TV and WiFi in room not working at all
Nice Hotel, plenty of room . Restaurant meals excellent and reasonable prices.
The steps up into the en - suite in the bedroom, stumbled a few times at night
The big lady on reception needs some training in politeness. ide suggest going to the other Hotels if she's on .
Friendly staff, excellent parking
Location to centre
Room very small for a superior room and paint was chipped
Lovely building. Good parking and location. Room /bathroom large, clean and comfortable. Nice outlook. Pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff.
Some noise from sqeaky floors and adjoining room.
Nice location for us, great breakfast, staff very good, polite and professional
I've stayed at the hotel previously with my husband. The atmosphere, facilities, food and large room with a lovely view - oh! and free parking.
On the evening of 3/9/26 we were joined in the foyer by a lone male who said he was staying in room 356 and was named Darren. We were having a nightcap. A little later, my friend went to the room while I finished my drink. He asked me if I would like to go to his room which had a double bed. I declined politely and stated that I was very happily married, then I took my drink to the lift. He followed and got into the lift inviting me to his room again. I got out on the first floor and went to my room only to find a message on my mobile phone the next morning from him saying - 'Room 356 xxx.' This made me nervous as I HAD NOT given him my number and neither had my friend. I went to Reception to report this and to ask if they'd given my number to anyone, which they denied. I explained the situation and my concern but the older female Receptionist said, whoever the guest was had checked out that morning. She told me nothing, which I completely understand was a matter of confidentiality, but her attitude felt very judgemental and dismissive. She simply stated the occupant had left and gave no reassurance to me regarding my experience, despite me telling her how worried I felt about him obtaining my phone number. I was completely dumbfounded. She asked for no details and did not follow the most basic of safeguarding procedures. That evening I asked the barman how it was possible for anyone to obtain my number without me giving it to them. He asked me if I was drunk!! While I appreciate that this might happen in some situations, I'm a 64 year old retired Social Worker who has a lot of experience in child protection and safeguarding and his suggestion added to the 'self-blame' attitude of the Receptionist. Fortunately, he had the sense to report my concern to the Duty Manager who did take the situation seriously and act accordingly. He recorded the details and assured us that he would take action to investigate.
Didn't have breakfast, the hotel is clean and comfortable with efficient staff. The location is fantastic and parking a real bonus.
Large room, nice views over the garden. Loads of parking spaces. Maybe a bit tired around the edges but a large quirky hotel with a lot of character. Comfortable walking distance into town.
WiFi seemed very slow, apart from that all good.
Perfect location for exploring Harrogate
Nothing to dislike
Location
Nothing
Breakfast very good Room very tired and dusty in places Location to town and restaurants excellent
Room was extremely dated and needed a good scrub Water was warm only and needed a lot of running to achieve No heat in the room Mattress wasn’t the best
Location was spot for us but downside if you have trouble walking hotel is on a bank
Our room was a little dated did need a few repairs bottom door hinge was about too unhinged itself and ceiling had a dark patch probably from a leak from next floor above we was stopping in room 143 didn’t complain as only stopped 2 nights
Lovely old building, must have been very grand in the day. Looking a bit tired overall. However, it was spotlessly clean. We had a modern bathroom with lovely big shower. Bed was super comfy. Staff were all very friendly. Plenty of choice at breakfast with a lot of staff in the restaurant. Hot food was hot and I liked that the chef served you. Also liked how staff were all immaculate in their uniforms in an old fashioned way. Shirt 5 min walk to town centre and parking for cars at the hotel.
Nothing.
Location
Old dated bathroom
Location was perfect, just a stroll into the centre.
The price,i think most accomdation is on the expensive side nowadays.
Excellent breakfast, freshly cooked. Room had everything I needed
Shower curtain too short and water came out on floor Room 126
Lovely hotel, 10 mins walk from centre with plenty of parking
Nothing I was v pleased
The hotel is beautiful if you like the old fashioned chintzy look, which I do. Staff friendly enough, breakfast great location fab.
The room was stuffy, the windows didn't open very much . The carpet was a bit thread bare in places , walls a bit marked but it was clean.
Good location. Lovely size room and bathroom. Excellent breakfast
Very tatty in places and staff could have been more welcoming - no smiles at check in
A beautiful building, it is a little tired in places. Staff were lovely, a good choice for breakfast, and would stay again.
Always a lovely stay at the Cairn hotel
Really happy we we're skeptical of the reviews but please dont listen to them we had a great stay and will be back
Could do with a lick of paint but different bother us
All of the staff we had contact with were very helpful and professional in their jobs. Breakfast was OK, due to the fact there were two large coach parties in the dining room for breakfast some choices were not available. Our room was quiet at the rear of the Hotel, the location suited our needs for a family meet up.
Due to the overall age of the building many areas needed to be updated, although our bathroom had been given an update. Our beds were too firm for our personal liking, noisy guests returning in the early hours of the morning.
The outside of the building has style
State of decor
Very handy location with ample parking. Lovely staff. Comfy room. No noise from nearby rooms, although it seemed quite busy. Generous hospitality tray in room.
It would be good to have a shelf and/or hooks in the bathroom. The evening entertainment in the bar wasn't quite our thing, though others were obviously enjoying it!
Not a lot to like be honest.
Cold. Outdated. Filthy. Smelled like an old folks home. Restaurant concierge - rude. Extremely expensive for what it is.
Every facilities outdated and need to be renovated.
The ceiling of the room l stayed 143 sign of fungi...greenish .lt is very bad to keep someone that paid that amount in that kind of room.l am very disappointed.
Great place to stay
Nothing
Close to centre. Free parking
Could hear other rooms
Location, parking, history, staff, large room
It's 3 star hotel the building needs a lot of work which would mean about 2 to 3 million pounds.
Some staff very helpful others very stand offishcould be really wonderful
Good selection
We was there 2 mornings and no fried bread either day also mushrooms were really dry not enjoyable
Close to the centre
Very worn down needs a refurbish
The hotel is in a good location with plenty of free parking.
The room we stopped in smelt like a combination of sweaty dogs and sick. The bathroom was tired and tiles starting to fall off the walls.
Had character, room was clean and bed was very comfortable. Bar staff were lovely despite being busy.
Does look a little tired in places, along corridors. Bar area could be spruced up a little too.
Location to town centre, friendliness of staff. Would highly recommend the free walking tour by Harry. I believe this may run Thursday to Sunday, but we went on the 10.30am Sunday lasted 1 5 hours plus . Moderate walking a lady on our tour managed with a walking stick, not entirely sure if this is suitable for a wheelchair as we crossed several roads and stood on some grassy areas. The notice board is opposite Betty's at a lamp post before the Cenotaph Harrogate
Initial problem with location on our Sat Nav took us to Divino restaurant as our final destination and we were unable the see the Cairn from the bottom of the hill.Suggest possibly posting a what3words address for the entrance to the car park:- (Nation.puzzle.stump) is the location we looked up.
Location & Staff
Requires some TLC in the bedrooms, we have stayed in 4 different rooms now and all require some kind of maintenance.
Yes, no fuss, straight in and out.
Booked a double room expecting a double bed, not two singles.
