Gower Guest House

Loved the location and history of this charming jellybean house, minutes from the bars of George Street and shops of Duckworth Street. The kitchen facilities had everything we need to make our own breakfast.

The location of the guest house was exceptional. It was located in the heart of St John's Jellybean Row, which is within 5 minute walk to downtown St Johns (e.g. Harbour Drive, Water Street, Duckworth Street). The character of the house was wonderful. My daughter and I shared a room with a double/queen bed. The living room on the main floor felt welcoming, with fridge, microwave, kettle and coffee maker. Plates, cups, utensils were provided as well.

Bathroom/Washroom was very small. Shower stall/sink were tiny If possible, a second chair is needed in the room No other complaints.......

The location was convenient to the downtown area.

The room was on the 4th floor up steep, narrow steps. The "sea view" was hard to find. The bathroom was very small, tucked under the slope of the roof so I'm glad I wasn't taller or I would have hit my head .

The mattress and shower were great, for us they are the most important things of the room!! The location was really good, as well the parking spots.

The communication was a bit off. Got instructions to park further regarding parking for another inn. When we got to the room we saw there was a closer parking option. Besides that it was great.

Quiet location close to downtown

Das Zimmer Nr. 4 ist sehr eng und klein. Die Einrichtung ist etwas älter, aber es ist alles sauber. Ein leichter Geruch lag in der Luft, aber er störte nicht sehr - bei offenem Fenster war er gar nicht mehr wahrnehmbar. Praktisch ist der Aufenthaltsraum unten, in dem man sich Tee, Kaffee und selbst mitgebrachten Toast machen kann. Ein Kühlschrank ist auch da. Es gibt vorne auch eine Sofaecke, wo man gemütlich sitzen kann, wenn einem das Zimmer zu klein ist. Es ist kein Personal vor Ort, Kontakt geht über Email und Telefon. Leider ging bei uns am letzten Tag der Warmwasserboiler kaputt, so dass wir nicht duschen konnten. Da wir keine kanadische Simkarte hatten, konnten wir auch nicht schnell Kontakt mit den Besitzern aufnehmen. Nach unserer Beschwerde gab man uns fairerweise einen Refund, und der Schaden wurde wohl auch am selben Tag noch behoben. Die Lage ist super in einer sehr hübschen Straße mit historischen Häusern, zu denen auch das Guest House gehört (jellybean row). Von hier aus kommt man aufgrund der zentralen Lage auch sehr gut zu Fuß zu allen Sehenswürdigkeiten.

The location was great, walkable to everything! The bed was comfortable and everything was very clean upon arrival.

The parking instructions were confusing. Also the key and check in code were in a mailbox outside of the door, so not exactly the most secure. The towel bar in the bathroom was loose/broken, so anytime I tried to hang my towel it broke off, so I just stopped using it

This place had history and I LOVED that! Also the downtown location could not be best. Nestled right in amidst the jellybean houses! It was great to have the little dining room and living room for a rainy day, and to be able to eat together there. The staff was so helpful too! I called them once when I forgot my door code and they were so helpful and kind to me! Really such a wonderful place!

The stairs were tricky for my grandma, but that couldn’t be helped.

Great location. Easy parking.

Room was smaller than expected. Maybe better for solo traveler or just an overnight. Two people with bags for four nights was a tight squeeze.

Room was clean and adequate for our stay.

Instruction on use of kitchen area would have been appreciated. For example use of coffee maker, toaster etc. Fresh coffee brewed and available in the morning would be an improvement.

I got in on a late flight and mixed up my reservation.. I did not reserve a room as for the first night. Amine got a lovely room ready for me in the middle of the night.

チェックイン方法の連絡を貰えず問い合わせたが返信がなく自力で鍵を見つけて入れた。3,4時間後に返信は来たけどとにかく反応が遅い（又は反応がない）。 冷蔵庫内に髪の毛が入っていた。 シーツにシミがあった。 朝8時に確認もせずに勝手に部屋に入られた。鍵で開けたので恐らくスタッフだと思われる。 部屋にティッシュがないので持っていった方がいいと思う。

Great location, room was clean and cozy. I haven't seen anyone from the staff in all 5 days I was there, but I had no problem with check in and check out - very easy - and the staff replied to email quickly

Only a minor comment: the common room had a fridge, microwave, kettle, etc - but no sink. It was not a major issue as they indicated the guest cna leave the dirt dishes in a tray, but still.. In overall, I enjoyed my stay and look forward to stay there again.

Very convenient love the setup clean

Checked into our room and figured our room was clean. Only exception is that there were a dirty pair of underwear and T-shirt on the floor. Made a pot of coffee in the morning and had a few cups. Coffee pot with old coffee sat there for 2 days. Garbage can was full and no room for the old coffee filter. Garbage can was also starting to stink. Also had the pleasure of waking up at 2:30 in the morning due to 5 Police cars and a Swat team outside the Guest house addressing a situation a few doors down. Other than that the location was good

Room 2- a small drab colourless room. Small pedestal table/chair - fine. 2 night tables - old and sad looking. On the bed an unenclosed slab of soft - about 4” - foam. Within an hour my hip was in burning pain. I rolled it off the bed which then impeded my access to the window. The mattress was soft/old but at least it didn’t cause any pain. The pillows OK but no pillow protectors - unsanitary. The bedding lovely, soft and smelled nice. I did sleep well. The room felt clean except for the bottom of the shower stall which needed a good scrubbing. I used shower shoes. The soap provided was too strong smelling. The small shampoo tubes were nice. The towels were small and thin but clean and nice smelling. I didn’t enjoy the confusing Roku streaming TV service. News was days old. This is not a B&B. There is a dining area with a table - a fridge - a coffee bar. Coffee, tea, sugar are available - no milk - no cereal as in some pictures. Kettle - coffee maker and toaster available. Crumbs on the toaster when I arrived were still there 7 days later. No sink. Water dispensed from a water bottle. Use a cup to obtain the water and pour it into the kettle or coffeemaker. NO housekeeping. No caretaker seen in 7 days. Self check in & out. Good location for town - strong walking legs needed for walking up and down hills. Easier to use 2nd floor door to go in and out. Hill to parking area easier than 3 doors and stairs. Restaurants expensive. Hop on/off bus from Alt hotel best value.

I liked that the room was right downtown. It would have been great to have had a bit larger room, but the hostoric nature of the building made up for it, however. It seems the building is due for a rennovation to make it a bit more contemporary. As it stands, it is very “from the 90s.” Prompt service response to my emails.

There was no coffee or milk/cream day one. There was no breakfast either day. Room we got was much smaller than room in pictures.

Cute old style row house, heritage building. Walking distance to George St and many shops and restaurants. Coffee pot, toaster and kettle supplied. Also yea and coffee.

Many stairs that will be difficult for those with mobility issues. Website pictures a bit misleading, as there is no breakfast supplied. There is a fridge to put your own breakfast items in. Large table in kitchen to sit and enjoy your meal. No follow-up from caretaker for fresh towels and toilet paper. We ended up buying toilet paper.

Great location. Quiet. Helpful manager. Comfortable bed. Minor negative was no sink in the kitchen so had to wash the coffee pot out in my room! Appreciated the window AC.

Close to downtown. Only problem is the steep hills. It would be the same anywhere though.

Parking was a bit of a hassle. I had indicated the need for a parking permit in my pre check in messages but didnt get one until I called the caretaker to request the next day. The room was clean enough but bathroom door in need of repair. Location was excellent...walkable to downtown

Bath room is too small

We had a 4th floor room which was small but cozy with good breezes from windows on 3 sides. Small narrow staircase may be hard for some people or those with heavy luggage. Coffee or hot water are self serve on the first floor. Small fridge in the room.

This is an old building with beautiful wood floors. There is a communal fridge and dining table. It is walking distance to restaurants and pubs - right in the heart of the jelly bean houses!

Location, location, location.

I had a room on the top floor, with lots of stairs. That's probably all that was left when I booked. Rooms on second and third floors would be preferable.

A great location but since we had no car there was a lot of uphill walking. It was clean and comfy but very small room and tiny bathroom. We had to do three flights of stairs, no elevator. The kitchen area was nicely stocked but lacked a sink. Very nice sitting area. Ok for only 2 days.

Il n'y a pas de point d'eau dans la cuisine. Le lit est extrêmement vieux et inconfortable. On roule vers le centre. Dès que l'autre personne bouge, on se sent bouger à notre tour. La chambre sent le vieux et est minuscule. Il est difficile de circuler lorsque nous sommes 2 personnes. Le sol est couvert de tapis (le rebord près de la fenêtre pique et est dangereux). La salle de bain est minuscule. Il n'y a aucun endroit où déposer nos objets (brosse à cheveux, brosse à dents, etc.). La douche est très petite, il est difficile d'y bouger même pour une personne qui n'est pas grande. Il n'y a pas de baignoire. Il y a seulement 1 chaise dans la chambre. Le rideau cache le climatiseur. Le stationnement dans la rue est extrêmement difficile : l'information concernant le stationnement dans la rue ne nous a pas été divulguée, malgré nos demandes avant l'arrivée. Un seul kit de serviettes / débarbouillettes est fourni, peu importe la durée du séjour. Il a fallu faire les démarches pour en obtenir d'autres. Le rapport qualité/prix est déficient. Le prix est très élevé pour un tel inconfort. Lorsque l'on contacte l'hôte par courriel, on semble le déranger.

Tout, très belle maison en ville proche du centre à pied. Salle pour les repas agréable. Salle de bains et chambres bien équipées.

Attention au bruit le soir tard dans la rue, manque d’insonorisation extérieure à cause du climatiseur. Prévoir bouchons pour les oreilles.

Mattress was a bit soft

We had the room on the top floor. It was a nice sized room, with a very comfortable queen size bed. It had a window air conditioner which cooled the room to an adequate temperature but still a little warm. The bathroom is tiny with the shower on the opposite side of the room, which worked well. There was a large kitchen area on the main floor and the addition of a water cooler was great. Overall, it was clean snd comfortable and worked well for what we needed.

This property is in an excellent location, easily walkable to the harbour and all the restaurants and bars of Water and George Street, and even walkable if you’re more ambitious, to the hike from Battery neighborhood up to Signal Hill and of course to the Rooms. The room itself was quite small and a bit dated, but if your intention is just to sleep there, it did the trick.

Property is a little tired. Bathroom is very small. I’m not a fan of shared kitchen.

Very convenient and quiet. Older home so could use some updates. Very limited amenities.

Very cozy place, close to everything

At the price charged I could book quickly. It was quiet and warm, stairs involved. A spacious room, comfortable bed.

Very disappainting, don't waste your money unless you are looking for something rather inexpensive but are okay with dumpy. My husband and I stayed for one night June 2024 and never again. I reached out several times once back home and did not hear back from the owner. Such disrespect for their guests! Very disappainting!! My issues: -not the room I thought I was getting -no host to greet you and ensure a satisfactory stay or address concerns or answer questions about the local area -room was dumpy and unkept -dead bugs in overhead light -ill-fitting mismatched, wrinkled bed linens, too small to cover 2 adults, only one wrinkled sheet and small wrinkled blanket, we were cold -T.V. didn't work, small dumpy water closet, shower was okay -dirty stairwell, meager breakfast offerings that were unappetizing, stale, over ripe fruit -no one to talk to about my concerns -furniture looked like yard sale discards, paint chips on tables, mismatched lamps, Very poorly appointed room -5th floor room, so many, many steps It is shocking to read other positive reviews. Not sure which rooms would get good reviews. Make sure you get the room and floor if staying! Do not expect any support from inn keeper. The only positive thing is that the inn is near restaurants and a lovely neighborhood.

I really enjoyed my stay at Gower Guest House! Very quiet, but it was April! The attendant cleaner always took away the dirty dishes! Nice. One thing was that the kitchen, which I used, had no sink to rinse things or get water, and the available water bottle ran empty on the last day. There wasn't many breakfast options, but I brought quick oats and prepared them in the microwave. Nice place!

Facilities are super clean; easy process even though it was contactless; bed was really comfortable and sufficient linens, bla kets and pillows. Common areas were really clean and comfortable as well. Parking was convenient and easy to use once you figure out where it is.

Nothing to complain about. I had one mix up when I arrived with a door code, but it was easily resolved with a phone call, which was answered immediately.

The bed was comfortable, but too high for a short person to be able to easily get into it. Otherwise, the room was great and the shower worked perfectly and lots of hot water.

The location was really good. There were lots of food shops and bus stop was just few minutes away.

First, the curtain in my room has molds, seems like it hasn't been wash for the longest time. The towels had very visible stains. The carpet has some kinda moldy smell. Lastly, the bed made squicky noices whenever I toss and turn which was so annoying. I used some utensils and glasses and since there's no sink downstairs, I left the dishes on the tray and those dishes probably there for like an overnight. Like, no one's checking on it.

The Gower Guest House perfectly matched our needs and fully met our expectations. The rooms were extremely comfortable, and the location was both quiet and central. The hosts were exceptionally accommodating. I would certainly recommend this property to anyone visiting St. John's.

Great location!

No running water or sink in the kitchen area made it difficult to deal with breakfasts. The bathroom in our room was EXTREMELY small. I had to go out to change my mind. Never met anyone who worked there at anytime, just the other guest so no way to ask questions etc.

sheets, towels and curtains had stains and even they were washed, the feeling was dirty. They can be changed with new ones without stains. Rather than that it was ok.

Mattress was saggy ,room small , poor breakfast almost nothing there and trash wasn’t emptied in four days.

Great location. They also provide some staples for breakfast: bread, peanut butter, cereals, yoghurts, tea and coffee. The staff is very helpful and accommodated my extra request.

The building is historical, so it is old. The sink in the bathroom was tiny. There was a mice, but that happens in such buildings. I was told it’s quite a common issue in houses in St. John’s.

The facility feels "tired" For example. the desk was marred, the sink cracked, the stairwell carpet old and wrinkled. The room was acceptable and clean, but very tight in terms of space.

I would not stay there again. I had front bedroom over the street which was extremely noisy all times of the day. I was really cold the first night and there were no extra blankets or comforters in the room. Bed had one sheet and a very light quilt to cover me. There is no one on-site to help. Morning breakfast was meager. Cereal looked like it was 6 months old. I couldn't even make a pot of coffee after the people who had come down before me finished the pot they made. THERE were absolutely NO coffee filters. Search high and low and none to be found so I was forced to go without. Again no-one on-site to help.

Amazing location, coffee, lots of tea options, and some self-serve breakfast options. Parking provided. Staff allowed us to keep our luggage in the common area after our check out since we had a later flight.

The bathroom was a little bit cramped, which is understandable since it was probably added in for the purpose of creating the guesthouse. The sink was so small and very close to the wall with the mirror slightly in the way, so washing hands and brushing teeth was a little awkward. Also, the sink blocked the toilet a little, so there is very little space to sit on the toilet.
